This small southern city has a rich historical and cultural past. Taganrog was both a Greek settlement, and the Italian city of Porto Pisano, and the first Russian port, which was founded by Tsar Peter himself on the Sea of Azov. Here, on Cape Tagany Rog, is the birthplace of Chekhov and Ranevskaya, the place of the last breath of Napoleon’s conqueror, Russian Emperor Alexander I. Taganrog is the first city built in Russia according to an approved architectural plan. For heroism and courage shown during the Great Patriotic War, Taganrog was awarded the title “City of Military Glory”.

Today's Taganrog is an important industrial center of the South of Russia and a strategic maritime hub. Although its resort potential has not yet been fully realized. Taganrog may well become an open-air museum city, presenting the world with its most interesting exhibits - from the ancient Greek period to the times of Peter the Great and from the reign of the monarchy to the rule of the Soviet proletariat.

The Prostokvashino microdistrict, like PMK, occupies the very outskirts of the city. Beaches of Taganrog

All Taganrog beaches are sandy, but each has its own characteristics. The central beach is suitable for comfortable relaxation and swimming - a wide coastal strip and a good bottom without stones and mud. There is a cafe on site and there is a shower and toilet. After the appearance of modern beaches, such as Eliseevsky and Solnechny, the popularity of Central Beach has decreased somewhat, but it is still crowded. Geographically, it is located in the central part of the city, trams No. 8, 9 and minibus No. 73 go there.

City beaches have a fairly convenient infrastructure that allows you to spend time near the water in a fun and varied way.

Sunny Beach, which is located near Pushkinskaya Embankment, is considered the most popular. To get to it, you just need to go down the legendary Stone Staircase. Every day there are entertainment programs, and rental of catamarans and boats is available. Changing rooms, numerous cafes and paid parking are available to guests. The lack of toilets is a big disadvantage of this beach area.

Next door is the Primorsky Beach, next to the park of the same name. Its shore is strewn with specially brought white sand, and the seabed is also sandy. There is a children's center with trampolines, rides and playrooms. Toilets are only available in the park, changing rooms and umbrellas are available. You can get here by trams No. 8, 9.

Eliseevsky Beach is considered one of the best city beaches. The sea in this place is the deepest compared to other beaches. The area is clean. All amenities are provided - toilets, showers, changing rooms. There is a water park nearby. Part of the beach is a closed paid area. You can get to this place by minibuses No. 19, 30 and 60.

There are also wild beaches within the city limits. This is considered to be the shore near the children's multidisciplinary clinic, between the Central and Primorsky beaches. There are no benefits of civilization here, but there are very few vacationers. In the shade of numerous trees you can hide from the hot sun. This place was chosen by nudists. To get here, you need to take minibus No. 19 to the children's hospital, and then go downstairs.

In the vicinity of Taganrog there are good beaches, which local residents even prefer to city ones. In the village of Petrushino the water is much cleaner than within the city. You can get here in 15 minutes from Aviator Square. To do this, you need to take a bus to the village and ask the driver to stop near the plant. It takes longer to get to the beach in the Rozhok village - about an hour. There is a large beach area, good depth and clean water. Vacationers often set up car camping on the beach. To get here, you need to take a bus to the village of Natalevka and get off in Rozhka.

Beach holiday

Due to the shallow depth of the Taganrog Bay, the water warms up quickly. The only thing you need to know is that in August the sea blooms due to the activity of bacteria. But flowering does not cause harm to health, but at night it is very beautiful - the bacteria phosphoresce.

There are several beaches on the coast with equipped toilets and sports grounds. Here you can ride banana boats, rent a windsurf or catamaran. Entertainment programs are held - fun competitions, gaming competitions for children, discos. Central, Sunny, and Primorsky are especially popular. The coast is covered with sand, the bottom is first muddy, then turns into sand.

What to bring

Regulars recommend trying the signature cheesecakes and casserole here.

A little history

The official founding date of the city is considered to be 1698 (Peter I ordered this immediately after the capture of the Azov fortress). Although in fact a settlement on the cape existed before that. Peter I decided to build a harbor here, and the Italian engineer-captain Matvey Simont was appointed responsible for this. At the same time, construction of the fortress began under the leadership of Reinhold Truzin (Swedish urban engineer), which ended in 1705. The harbor was named Troitskaya. Later the city began to acquire other fortresses.

And in order to always have a workforce in Taganrog, Peter I ordered the creation of a place for hard labor on the cape. The port city has been actively developing for several centuries.

In 1941, Taganrog was captured by the Wehrmacht. Local residents created the first anti-fascist youth organization (Taganrog Underground). After 680 days, the city was liberated from the Nazis, but the scale of the losses was so great that it took several more decades to restore it.

Now Taganrog is not only an industrially developed, but also a popular tourist city. It is recognized as the "City of Military Glory".

During the occupation, the Nazis used the local orphanage as a blood transfusion station, and the donors were children (orphanage pupils)

Entertainment and attractions of Taganrog

The city's attractions are varied and quite numerous. A wonderful view of the embankment opens from the Stone Staircase, which connects Grecheskaya Street with Portovaya Street. It consists of 200 steps made of Sarmatian stone. The staircase was built at the expense of a local Greek millionaire and survived the bombing of the Anglo-French squadron during the Crimean War. Every year a race is held on it in honor of the founding day of the city.

Central City Park named after. Gorky has been a favorite vacation spot for city residents since 1825. Once upon a time there was a Pharmacy Garden in this place, in which medicinal plants were grown for hospital needs. Over its two-century history, the park has changed many names - it was State, Public, City and Proletarsky. In 1909, it was completely destroyed, but still reborn.

The Dubki Grove is a historical park. According to legend, it was founded by Peter I himself. Although it is documented that the oaks were planted in 1771 by decree of Catherine II. This is one of the first artificial plantings in steppe Russia. The Oak Grove is located between the Dubki area and in the Bolshaya Turtle gully.

One of the most beautiful buildings of old Taganrog is the Rafailovich House. It is included in the List of Cultural Heritage of Russia. The architects define the style of this merchant mansion as “neo-baroque”. Taganrog also has an example of avant-garde Soviet architecture. The residential apartment building on Aleksandrovskaya Street is the first round house built in the USSR.

In Taganrog, the memory of people whose names are somehow connected with the city is honored - there are monuments to Peter I, Alexander I, Alexander Pushkin, Anton Chekhov, Maxim Gorky, Giuseppe Garibaldi, Faina Ranevskaya, Sergei Korolev and Yuri Gagarin. The decoration of the city is sculptural compositions dedicated to Chekhov’s heroes - “Thick and Thin”, “The Cherry Orchard”, “Kashtanka”, “Man in a Case”.

There are also interesting places in the vicinity of the city. The historical site, the Pavlovsk Fortress, is located just 2 km away, in the upper reaches of the Miussky Estuary. Its age is more than 200 years. 25 km from Taganrog there is a natural monument - Beglitskaya Spit. Colonies of wild ducks and seagulls live here, and plants listed in the Red Book grow. There is a lighthouse at the eastern end of the spit. This place is chosen by hang gliders, from here you can watch their flights over the Sea of Azov. 2 km from the Taganrog harbor there is an artificial Turtle Island, which was reclaimed by order of Peter I. Relics of Peter the Great’s era are found around the island - cannonballs, nails, an anchor.

Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker

This church was built in 1778, at the request of Admiral Kolchak so that sailors could pray before the upcoming battles. The real decoration of the temple was the dome, cast from captured cannons.

Over its almost 250-year history, the church has experienced quite a lot. During the Crimean War, the temple was damaged by shelling; one of the proofs of this is a shell stuck in its wall. Later, during the Second World War, the church was practically destroyed by fire, and in 1957, after reconstruction, vandals blew up the upper tiers of the temple.

But still, in the 90s, thanks to the titanic efforts of the then rector of the temple, Fyodor Klyunkov, the church was restored. And now services are regularly held there, and its doors are open to everyone.

Alferaki Palace

In 1848, a beautiful building appeared in Taganrog - a real palace. This palace was built by order of N.D. Alferaki - landowner and ruler of the city. The exterior of the palace was decorated in the best traditions of southern neo-baroque. And in the interior decoration of the palace the Rococo style is clearly visible.

At the end of the 1870s, the merchant club “Commercial Assembly” appeared in the palace. The great prose writer Anton Chekhov visited the club and conveyed his impressions in several stories (and one of them, “Ionych,” turned out, oddly enough, to be a micro-novel).

In the first half of the 1920s, the palace building was used for various kinds of administrative institutions. Since 1927, the palace building became a branch of the local history museum.

Weather

  • Today
  • Tomorrow

Taganrog has a mild climate without sharp temperature fluctuations. The dry steppe air is softened by the proximity of the sea. The hottest and driest month is August, the rainiest month is June, and the snowiest and frostiest month is January. This area is characterized by the constant presence of wind. In warm weather, during the day the sea breeze blows from the sea, and at night it changes direction. The change from sea breeze to onshore breeze occurs before 9:00 and in the evening at sunset. From August, when the sea water gets very hot, the sea “blooms” - algae grow rapidly. This causes the water to turn green and phosphorescent at night. The swimming season lasts from June to September.

New embankment

The new Taganrog embankment is not yet as famous and popular as its “big sister”. Only opened in 2011, it is usually sparsely populated, but that's part of its charm. Just recently there was not a single retail or entertainment outlet here. On the quiet embankment, people were looking for peace, solitude and inspiration. Even today, when civilization has already reached here, Taganrozh residents still come to take a break from the hustle and bustle, read, take photographs or dream.

Disadvantages - proximity to the Metallurgical Plant, not very convenient access and lack of trees. In summer it is very hot and sultry in Taganrog, so it is better to walk along New Embankment in the morning or evening.
