Architecture

Palace of the Rumyantsevs and Paskevichs , located on pl. Lenina, 4, is one of the symbols of the city. Built in 1794 by the architect I. Starov in the style of early classicism, it still amazes with its beauty and majesty.

In 1826, the new owner decided to slightly rebuild the castle. Under the leadership of the architect A. Back in 1929, Belarusian archaeologists discovered a settlement, and thanks to subsequent expeditions, the remains of 20 mammoths, a primitive bull, and a wild horse were found. Near an ancient round-shaped dwelling, built of bones, skins and impressive stones at the base, plate knives, scrapers, and a flint dagger were found. In the 1970s, archaeologists discovered 5 more settlements in Yurovichi, including three Neolithic ones, a settlement of the Bantser culture and, most importantly, the remains of a large medieval city of the 9th-10th centuries. It was not inferior in size to Polotsk , but for unknown reasons it disappeared and is not mentioned in the chronicles.

Ancient Turov , the largest religious and spiritual center of Belarus along with Polotsk , has been mentioned in chronicles since 980. Old Believers Center – Vetka

It is believed that the city of Vetka was founded in the 17th century by Old Believers seeking refuge from the Moscow authorities. According to legend, they launched an icon along the river and decided to stay where it landed. The icon got caught on a branch in the place of the modern city. The main principles of the Old Believers were work and education. This made the city prosperous. In addition, in Vetka there was the only church in the entire Russian Empire where Old Believers could pray. That is why the flow of people into the city did not stop.

Today Vetka looks like any other city in Belarus. But there are still descendants of the Old Believers there. One of them founded a museum in the city with an interesting collection that tells how the Old Believers lived in this region. There are collected books with commentaries of the kings, ancient icons, ritual clothing, handbrake handles, and samovars. Vetka also has an Old Believer church, one of the few in Belarus, and an old cemetery of Old Believers.

Loev


Since ancient times Loev , located on the Dnieper, was part of the famous route “from the Varangians to the Greeks” connecting Scandinavia and Byzantium. St. John's Kormyansky Monastery


The monastery houses the relics of the heavenly patron of the Belarusian land, Saint Righteous John of Kormyansk , after whom the Orthodox monastery is named. It was founded in 2000, but the history began centuries ago. The only memorial in the world dedicated to child victims of the Great Patriotic War is located in the village of Krasny Bereg.
