Surgut from above: the frosty capital of oil and gas

Text and photo: Slava Stepanov

The unofficial oil and gas capital of Russia, the city of Surgut is located in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug - Ugra. The region's economy is based on oil production and associated gas processing. The headquarters of large specialized companies, Gazprom Transgaz Surgut and Gazprom Pererabotka, are located in Surgut. In terms of climatic conditions, Surgut is equated to the Far North. The average annual temperature here is -1.7°C, and frosts are possible in any month of summer.

The city of Surgut is one of the oldest in Siberia - founded at the end of the 16th century. But only in the 1960–1970s, after the discovery and start of development of oil and gas fields, the village of Surgut turned into a relatively large city.

As of 2016, the population of Surgut is about 348 thousand people.

It is quite a rare case for Russia when the population of the regional center of a federal subject (Surgut) is more than three times the number of residents of its capital (less than 100 thousand people live in Khanty-Mansiysk).

The ring at the intersection of Lenin Avenue, Mayskaya and Ostrovsky streets. In the center there is a monument to the founders of Surgut.

The sculpture was cast in St. Petersburg (about 40 tons of bronze were needed to make it), installed in June 2002, the height with the pedestal is about 15 meters. The authors depicted symbolic figures of the city’s founders. Two of them have real historical prototypes: Prince Fyodor Boryatinsky and voivode Vladimir Anichkov (Onichkov), who founded the Surgut fort in 1594 at the behest of Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich. The other two images of the composition are collective - an Orthodox priest and a Cossack carpenter.

But a later extension, the new building of Surgutneftegaz, received the nickname “Kindergarten”. This is due to the fact that it is quite difficult to get a job at the company and locals believe that priority is given to relatives, that is, the “children” of current employees, hence the nickname.

Monuments

Monument to the founders of Surgut

Address: ring Lenin Avenue - st. Ostrovsky

The main monument of the city is the monument to its founders. The composition consists of 4 bronze figures:

  • prince - personifies Fyodor Boryatinsky, the founder of Surgut;
  • governor - the prototype of the character is Vladimir Anichkov, an associate and right hand of Fyodor Boryatinsky;
  • Cossack carpenter - an allegory of the will and free spirit of the townspeople;
  • a priest is a symbol of the soul and deep religiosity of Siberians.

The sculptural composition rises 15 meters above the ground, and the city’s central transport ring continues around it.

Monument to the Black Fox

Address: st. Energetikov, 2. At the entrance to the "Old Surgut" complex

On the border of the old and modern parts of Surgut there is a monument to the black fox. It was installed in 2006 and depicts the city's mascot, its celestial patron and heraldic animal.

According to legend, in ancient times the land of the Khanty and Mansi was in danger. A mysterious horseman descended from heaven, taking the guise of a red fox - Mir-susne-khum (among the Mansi) or Vert (among the Khanty). The bright orange, almost red, color of the fur symbolized heavenly fire and the sun. The horseman (or red fox) became the patron saint of the local peoples, protecting and guarding their hearth and families. One day the animal got caught in a fire, which caused its fur to turn dark brown.

The monument was created from bronze by Tobolsk master Minsalim Timergazeev, who cast the figure in St. Petersburg in a month.

Monument to a Smile

Address: st. 30 years of Victory, 21/2

The sculptural composition was installed near the museum center of Surgut in 2006. The author of the monument is the sculptor Oleg Dergachev, who several years earlier erected a similar monument in Lviv.

During the creation process, the fish visited several cities:

  • in Lvov - a model of the monument was created in plaster;
  • in Kyiv - the composition was cast in bronze;
  • in Moscow - was loaded onto a plane that took her to Surgut.

According to legend, in a local river there lived a smart and cheerful fish who was not afraid of wild animals and knew many jokes and funny stories. She shared jokes with the residents of the city, telling them through her friend the mermaid. Everyone who heard the stories of the laughing fish smiled and forgot about their troubles and problems.

According to the creator of the monument, in the 21st century, happy and cheerful people are becoming increasingly rare on the streets of Russian and Ukrainian cities, so the fairytale fish needs to appear again and cheer up the townspeople.

The opening of the sculptural group was timed to coincide with the international humor forum “Caricaturum”, which is organized in the city every year on April 1.
