Sergiev Posad. photos of the city, streets, attractions. what to see in 1-2 days, routes, interesting places for tourists

Route around Sergiev Posad for 1 day

If you ask me what an ideal day in Sergiev Posad is like for me, then I will paint something like this: walk along the streets of Sergiev Posad, look into the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, and then buy a loaf of monastery bread and a couple of liters of kvass and walk to any city lake where you can enjoy these gifts, sharing with local ducks and swans.
This is the route I indicated on the map. It also highlights other attractions that may attract the tourist's eye. And you might want to stay in this city longer to see them all or just come back here again.

Main attractions of Sergiev Posad

Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra Stavropegial Monastery is the heart of Sergiev Posad, its pride and greatest value. This largest monastery in the Russian Orthodox Church is protected by UNESCO.

Entrance to the Lavra

The Lavra is the largest center of educational and publishing activities of the Russian Orthodox Church. And here is also the Moscow Theological Academy - a higher educational institution of the Russian Orthodox Church, training clergy, teachers, theologians and employees for the Russian Orthodox Church.

Lavra map

Also here are the relics of the founder of the monastery, St. Sergius of Radonezh, who died in the fall of 1392, and the tomb of the Godunovs.

But this Monastery is a very beautiful place and you can come here just to sit quietly on a bench and look at the wonderful architecture. After all, the Lavra ensemble includes more than 50 buildings for various purposes, built by the best architects of the country in the 15th-19th centuries. It is not for nothing that this Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Gethsemane Chernigov monastery is a metochion, i.e. a city church belonging to a monastery located elsewhere in the Holy Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. The monastery is a haven for monks, pilgrims and those who want to learn about the history of the church and the city.

It was built in 1844, and 3 years later the Cave Department was opened at the Skete. After the 1917 revolution, the monastery was closed until 1990.

The name of this church, “Skete,” comes from the name of the wild sandy area in Egypt, where St. Petersburg lived in solitude. Macarius of Egypt in the 4th century. And now a monastery is a name for secluded places where believers and monks come to retire.

The Gethsemane monastery is named after the Garden of Jerusalem, where the Mother of God is buried, and the Chernigov monastery is named after Her miraculous Chernigov icon, which glorified the monastery at the end of the 19th century.

Today, the Skete is also visited for the cave temples, excursions through the strict monastic cells and the holy spring. And the architecture of this place is interesting and, they say, unique.

Church of Peter and Paul. There are a lot of churches on the territory of Sergiev Posad, I highlight this one because... There is very convenient and free parking next to it.

Ponds of Sergiev Posad

  1. White Pond is located in the very center of the city, 3 minutes from the Lavra. The place is always full of birds and people wanting to sell something to tourists.
  2. Kelarsky and Banny ponds. It is convenient to come here if you come to the city by public transport.
  3. Skete ponds. They are located further than others from the main street and the Lavra, so you will only get here if you have time, are ready for a long walk (or just find a bus) and specifically go in this direction.

What to bring from Sergiev Posad

The most important attraction of Sergiev Posad is the Trinity Lavra of Sergius, a place of pilgrimage for Christians, a historical, spiritual and patriarchal image of Russia. In the city center, in the square around this shrine, a large number of retail shops are concentrated where you can buy souvenirs and crafts from local craftsmen.

Church souvenirs (religious)

Sergiev Posad church souvenirs are the most important acquisition that you can take away from this place as a souvenir. The Lavra's shops offer a wide range of goods - church supplies, Slavic, Russian and Orthodox literature, calendars, educational audio and video materials

In addition, pilgrims and tourists always take with them water blessed in the Lavra and bags of holy soil. Guests are offered original confectionery souvenirs and baked goods, for example, honey, kvass prepared according to a special recipe, and unusual products from church chocolatiers.

Matryoshka dolls from Zagorsk

Sergiev Posad (photo of the city, the location of the Matryoshka factory is indicated in the guidebook) is the birthplace of the Russian wooden toy “Matryoshka”. The factory appeared here in the mid-16th century, thanks to local puppeteers.

The history of the emergence of Matryoshka is also very interesting. Over the past centuries, she has “changed her outfits” more than once, the technology of its production and paints have been improved, but still the Russian Matryoshka is the most desired souvenir of Russia.

Alexander Posad shawls

The Alexander painted scarf can become a wonderful souvenir and gift. The process of its production is also unique. Craftsmen, using ancient traditions, apply new technologies for making scarves, resulting in a beautiful and original attribute of a woman’s wardrobe.

Posad scarves are in deserved demand not only among Russian tourists and pilgrims, but also among foreigners.

Bogorodsk toys

“Bogorodskoye” is a village near Sergiev Posad, where an artel of woodcarvers was formed at the beginning of the 20th century. Nowadays, it is already a small factory, which is called “Bogorodsky Carver”, where real craftsmen work.

The Bogorodskaya toy is probably familiar to everyone. This is a wooden craft with two characters from Russian fairy tales - a peasant and a bear, who alternately tap their hammers on an anvil, thanks to a simple manual mechanism. This funny toy will be a pleasant souvenir for both children and adults.

Wood and bone carving

The shopping arcades of Sergiev Posad offer tourists a wide range of souvenirs, including original crafts by Abramtsevo masters. This creativity originated a long time ago. Self-taught master V. Vornoskov from Kudrino mastered the technique of relief wood carving, and then began to teach this craft to other craftsmen - this is how Abramtsevo-Kudrinskaya carving was born.

In the town of Khotkovo, according to the same principle, folk craftsmen began to make bone carvings and now elegant, openwork objects made of bone are called Khotkovo carving. This is a special type of creativity, the original of which cannot be found anywhere else. Therefore, such unusual souvenirs with wood or bone carvings are the best gift from a trip to Sergiev Posad.

Porcelain souvenirs

This craft of masters from the village. Verbilki was taught by a visiting English merchant. In the 18th century, they created a magnificent porcelain service for Empress Catherine the Great. This is how the tradition was started.

The art of the Verbilov craftsmen not only did not perish, but also received further development. Now new technologies have appeared in this production, but the principles of creating porcelain products remain the same. The products and dishes of Verbilov craftsmen are unique and are in great demand. Guests of Sergiev Posad are happy to take the famous porcelain home as a souvenir.

Sergiev Posad is one of the main Orthodox Church centers in Russia. The pearl of this place, undoubtedly, can be considered the Trinity-Sergius Lavra (photos can be found in the city guide). This rich and hospitable region welcomes pilgrims and tourists from all over the world. There is something to show, something to share and something to surprise.

Other buildings belonging to the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra

Krasnogorsk shopping arcades

Opposite the walls of the Lavra on Krasnogorskaya Square stands the recently restored building of the former Krasnogorsk shopping arcade. The building was built in 1902, but completely burned down in 1920, after which it was rebuilt in a new look, and in 2014 the building was completely restored. Now there is a restaurant, cafeteria, excursions and other services, and the building itself belongs to the Sergius Lavra.

Old Monastery Hotel and White Pond

To the right of the monastery on the shore of the White Pond is the Old Monastery Hotel. The first building of this oldest hotel in Sergiev Posad was built in 1822 on the orders of the Moscow Metropolitan and Holy Archimandrite Lavra Philaret (Drozdov). Later, the complex was completed, forming a closed courtyard. After the revolution of 1917, the monastery hotel fell into ruins; many buildings were in disrepair.

Restoration work began in 2005 and ended in 2008. The hotel again began to welcome guests of the city and the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra who want to get acquainted with all the sights of Sergiev Posad or who come on business.

Old Monastery Hotel and White Pond

The White Pond was originally part of the defensive dams during the siege of the monastery; its size was several times larger than the current one. The pond has had several names throughout its history: Upper, Round, Nagorny. Now the White Pond looks quite decorative, its banks are reinforced with stone masonry, and houses for ducks are installed in several places.

Museum complex "Horse yard"

The museum complex “Horse Yard” is located on the territory of the former monastery stables. The stables turned into a museum in 1920, where all the valuable objects of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra were collected (some were donated by noble people, some were made in the workshops of the monastery). The museum has both a permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions. And, even if you don’t have time to visit the museum itself, you can go into the courtyard of the complex for free, admire the architecture of the buildings, old cannons and bells, and take a few photos for memory.

Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Church and Vvedenskaya Church

To the left of the monastery are the Podolnye churches of the Lavra (i.e. at the foot of the Lavra): the Church of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa and the Church of the Vvedenskaya - the oldest churches in Sergiev Posad outside the walls of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra. The churches were built in 1547, but were later destroyed during battles; they began to be restored only in 1967. Although the churches were built in the same year, they had different purposes: the cold Vvedenskaya Church was for services, and the warm Pyatnitskaya Church was for the residence of monks.

Pafnutievsky Garden

The Pafnutii Garden begins its history back in the 17th century, divided into two farms at the monastery, in one part onions were grown (hence the name Onion Tower), in the other an apple orchard flourished. The garden had a greenhouse where the monks grew strawberries, peaches, plums, lemons, grapes and flowers. During Soviet times, the garden served as a city park of culture and recreation in the city of Sergiev Posad. Now it belongs to Lavreya and is gradually restoring its former beauty. The photo shows the garden fence.

What to see?

There are several places in Sergiev Posad and beyond that everyone who finds themselves in this city should definitely visit. The main attractions, which not only any guidebook includes, but are also recommended by local residents, include those listed below.

Krasnogorskaya Square

It is believed that this square is the same age as the city. After the appearance of Sergiev, it was in this place that the first shopping arcades were located, fairs were held on weekends, and church holidays were held.

During the Soviet era, the square was called Krasnaya and Sovetskaya, but in the 70s of the last century it returned its historical name.

Gethsemane Chernigov monastery

There is a city park nearby.

Assumption Church

Located on Bolotnaya street, 39.

The temple appeared in 1789. During the war period it was badly damaged and partially destroyed. Restoration began only in 1990; a bell tower and a refectory were also added to the main building. The baptism took place in the spring of 2003.

Today, inside there is an iconostasis, which consists of 45 rare icons. Worship services are held regularly.

Memorial cross

Located at the beginning of Vifanskaya Street. Appeared at this place in December 2012.

The sculpture is dedicated to those who suffered for their faith during the years of persecution and repression of the 20th century. Installed with funds allocated by the Pavel Florensky Foundation.

Peter and Paul Church

Located on First Shock Army Street, 17. Founded in 1818.

During the war it served as a warehouse and was destroyed. Restored in 1990. It is the courtyard of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.

Here, visitors will be told about the history of catering establishments of the 19th-20th centuries, and will be invited to familiarize themselves with the kitchen equipment of that time, table setting options, and recipes for national dishes. There is a cafe and a candy shop on the territory of the museum.

Address: Karl Marx street, 7.

Abramtsevo Nature Reserve

14 km from Sergiev Posad there is the Abramtsevo nature reserve, all the sights of which can be visited in one day. This place is attractive because, in different years, famous artists, sculptors and writers lived on the territory of the estate, who left their mark not only in the national history of art, but were also known far beyond the borders of the country.

Today there are several exhibitions here, each of which can be visited by anyone, either independently or as part of an excursion group accompanied by a guide: Manor House, Church of the Savior Not Made by Hands, Park, Polenovskaya Dacha, Kitchen, Bathhouse Teremok, Studio-Workshop.

It was founded in 1337, and is still a symbol of Posad, including a monastery, a pilgrimage center, several additional buildings and monuments, a publishing house, and a theological academy. The relics of the founder of the monastery are kept here.

One of the most beautiful churches in Russia - the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - is located in Sergiev Posad, being the main attraction of this city. The temple was built from 1559 to 1585. by order of Ivan the Terrible in honor of the conquest of Kazan and Astrakhan. It repeats the layout of the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, but at the same time exceeds it in size.

The amazing architecture of the Assumption Cathedral in the late Baroque style fits well into the Trinity Monastery ensemble, without suppressing its other buildings. The entire cathedral was built according to a three-part scheme, having a two-tier drum with a small dome.

Inside the temple, stunning frescoes and icon paintings made by Yaroslavl and Troitsk masters in 1674 have been preserved. The five-tiered carved iconostasis, created at the beginning of the 18th century, and the bronze chandeliers of the Armory Chamber add amazing elegance to the interior decoration.

In the 1930s, the temple was closed to believers, and the building housed a bakery. Only in 1980 did gradual construction work begin to restore the temple. Currently, services are regularly held in this beautiful temple, and an Orthodox youth center operates.

What to try? Delicacies of Sergiev Posad

In the souvenir shops of Sergiev Posad you will find many standard souvenirs - magnets, plates, textiles. But what if all this doesn’t bother you much?

This city has some of the best monastery kvass and bread. They are so tasty that you can come to this town just for a couple of liters of kvass and a slice of rye bread.

From time to time I design weddings and often communicate with newlyweds. So, I had clients who ordered a loaf from this monastery, although the wedding was celebrated about 100 km from the city.

I marked the tent with monastery pastries on the map, and you will find babushkas with kvass yourself - they stand there on all the roads and parking lots in the city center.

Location

The geographic coordinates of Sergiev Posad are 56°17'59" latitude and 38°7'59" longitude. The city is located a little over 50 kilometers from the Moscow Ring Road and 200 km from the city of Yaroslavl.

The settlements that appeared around the Trinity-Sergius Monastery were famous for their crafts, in particular, wood carving and toy making. This amazing place, located half an hour from Sergiev Posad, is worth visiting with the whole family. Here, right from the steep, rocky bank of the Vondiga River, springs gush out, which, according to legend, opened after the prayer of St. Sergius. A colorful wooden chapel was erected above the springs. The spring water, which has healing properties, is crystal clear and cold. Its temperature does not rise above +6 degrees. A font was built from logs near the chapel. You can plunge into it even on a cold day. The procedure is as safe as bathing at Epiphany.

Toy Museum

What else can Sergiev Posad surprise tourists with? The attractions, photos of which are presented in the article, are decorated with the Toy Museum, founded by the collector and artist Bartram. In 1925, the exhibition moved to the Khrushchev-Seleznyov estate, located on Kropotkinskaya Street in the capital. The museum's collection is decorated with collections from the Livadia Palace, the Alexander Palace, the Stroganov School, specialized stores and nationalized private collections.

The Toy Museum constantly participates in many domestic exhibitions. Back in 1925-1926. screenings of all the capital's puppet theaters were organized within its walls. In the spring of 1927, an exhibition of their work was held there, accompanied by interesting performances. The museum workshop constantly continued its own activities, organizing courses teaching the art of creating artistic toys.

These courses annually trained three hundred specialists, masters of such artistic creativity. An entertaining exhibition, an excellent collection, innovative ways of working with the younger generation - all this has become the reason for the unprecedented popularity of the museum. An interesting fact is that in terms of attendance it was second only to the Tretyakov Gallery. Bartram headed the museum until his death. By the way, there are wonderful churches not only on the territory of the monastery, but also outside the monastery.

Assumption Cathedral

Ivan the Terrible, baptized in the Trinity Church of the Lavra, treated the monastery with special respect. During his reign, large-scale reconstruction began here. Among the buildings built during that period, the Assumption Cathedral stands out, built in the likeness of the temple of the same name in Moscow and consecrated in the summer of 1585. The creation of Russian architects is amazing! Five voluminous drums topped with massive bulbs rise above the white stone walls. The corner domes are bright blue, and the central one shines with gold. The interiors of the cathedral are no less impressive. The highlight of the surroundings are the frescoes covering the pillars, walls, and five-tiered iconostasis of the 16th century. and luxurious chandeliers of the 17th century. The main relic of the temple, the shrine with the relics of Innocent of Moscow, is considered a particularly revered Orthodox shrine. Near the walls of the cathedral there is a tomb of the Godunov family.

  • Telephone.
  • Address: Trinity-Sergius Lavra.

In the southeastern corner of the Lavra's Cathedral Square you can see a small church from the mid-15th century, completely different from other buildings of the monastery. The whole point is that the builders of the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit were architects from Pskov. It was built in the best traditions of North Russian religious architecture. It is easy to guess this from a characteristic feature of the exterior - the church’s belfry is located directly under the drum of the main dome. The object of pilgrimage is the shrines with the relics of St. Anthony and Maximus the Greek, kept under the shade of the temple.

Church of Savvaty and Zosima Solovetsky

Address: Trinity-Sergius Lavra.

Another architectural highlight appeared in the Lavra in 1637. Then the consecration ceremony was held in the name of the Solovetsky wonderworkers Zosima and Savvaty of the church built into the monastery hospital. The elongated hipped dome of the temple with an elegant gilded onion is lined with green tiles and is very similar to the turret of a boyar's tower. The creator of such a colorful element of the Lavra ensemble is considered to be the cellarer of the Trinity Cathedral, A. Bulatnikov, who before arriving at the monastery was a monk in Solovtsy. The church houses the miraculous icon of Zosima and Savvaty praying at the image of the Mother of God “The Sign”.

Smolensk Temple

  • Opening hours: daily, from 8:00 to 19:00.
  • Address: Trinity-Sergius Lavra.

The miniature church, consecrated in 1746 in the name of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, immediately attracts the eye. The church, decorated in white and turquoise tones, looks very elegant. The building is covered by a dome, from which emerges an elegant light drum topped with an onion with a cross. An amazing architectural masterpiece, decorated in the colorful Elizabethan Baroque style, is beautiful. For a long time, the main shrine of the temple was considered an icon of the Mother of God, carved from stone. Now the Orthodox relic is on display in the exhibition at the Horse Yard, and a copy of it is placed in a niche in the church wall. However, there is a lot to see here. The elegant iconostasis of the temple, for example, dates back to the mid-18th century. Church services are held on weekends. The rest of the time it is open to tourists.

Elias Church

Another magnificent baroque temple is located outside the monastery. Elias Church was erected in the last third of the 18th century. for parishioners of Pushkarskaya and Streletskaya Sloboda. The elegant building is striking in its proportionality of forms. White window frames, half-columns, and other decorative elements stand out on the red walls. The highlight of the interior is the gilded five-row iconostasis and magnificent frescoes.

Chapel of Savva Storozhevsky

Address: st. Parkhomenko. Transport stop "8th March Street".

Not far from the monastery there is a wonderful place where pilgrims from all over the country strive to get to. A small wooden chapel with a font filled with the waters of a holy spring was erected here. According to legend, a divine spring opened at the place of prayer of the Orthodox seer Savva of Storozhesvsky, who was canonized by a church council in 1547. The associate of Sergius of Radonezh performed many miraculous deeds, healing the afflicted with prayer. Water from the holy spring helps get rid of diseases, and bathing in the font helps to gain spiritual balance.
