National Museum of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic

National Museum of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic

Nalchik

One of the oldest museums in Kabardino-Balkaria, the National Museum, was founded in 1921. Its archival and ethnographic exhibits tell about the history and culture of the ancient Kabardians, Balkars and other peoples of the Caucasian land: Ingush, Adyghe, Ossetians.

Among the archaeological finds is the Etok monument, which was discovered in the 18th century. It dates back to the 12th century and testifies to the first appearance of Kabardians in this region. Here you can get acquainted with the life of ancient peoples and see national costumes: a felt cap, a diadem, shirts, Circassian coats and a beshmet - a men's quilted caftan. The museum contains documents and drawings dedicated to the Caucasian War of 1817–1864, namely the participation of the Kabardian regiment in it. A separate part of the exhibition is dedicated to the hero of folklore Andemirkan and the princes of Little Kabarda - the territory of modern Chechnya, Ingushetia, Ossetia.

In the nature department there is a relief map of the republic, which shows soil samples and extracted minerals. Here you can see slides that introduce the flora and fauna of the republic. Medicinal and poisonous herbs grow in the region, wild animals live: wolves, lynxes, leopards, and there are birds of prey - eagle owl, tawny owl, and brown owl.

Walking tour of Atazhukinsky (City) Park

Includes a walk along the park alleys, visiting the monuments to Zhabaga Kazanoko, the “Tree of Life on the Wheel of History” - to the victims of the Caucasian War, the “Eternal Flame” in memory of those killed during the Great Patriotic War, the poets B. Pachev and K. Mechiev, M. Lermontov; ascent to the Malaya Kizilovka CCD to the Sosruko restaurant; visit to the Zoo (optional); walk around the Resort Lake. The tour ends with a visit to the Nalchik spring.

The city park is one of the main attractions of Nalchik. The park is a favorite place for walks for citizens and vacationers. Fresh air, beauty and lush nature, comfortable conditions for spending time, magnificent landscape design - all this allows us to consider Nalchik park one of the best not only in Russia, but also on a global scale.

The park consists of three alleys: Lipovaya, Central and Komsomolskaya. In its upper part there is a zoo and an observation tower, in the form of a fortress tower with loopholes and two balconies encircling it. From the tower you can clearly see the Trek and Kurortnoe lakes, sanatorium buildings, the cable car, and Mount Bolshaya Kizilovka. A cable car runs along Malaya Kizilovka Mountain, towards the Sosruko restaurant. Those who wish can enjoy stunning mountain and city landscapes from above.

Kabardino-Balkarian Museum of Fine Arts

Kabardino-Balkarian Museum of Fine Arts

Nalchik

The Museum of Fine Arts was opened in the republic in 1960. It bears the name of the Soviet teacher Andrei Tkachenko, who ran an art studio in Nalchik for more than 50 years. Back in the 1920s, the country's central museums transferred more than 200 exhibits to the republic - they became the basis of the museum's collection. Among them were paintings by Russian painters: Karl Bryullov, Dmitry Levitsky, Ivan Shishkin, Ivan Aivazovsky and many other artists.

In the 1980s, the museum created a section “Art of Kabardino-Balkaria”, which included works of traditional and contemporary art of the republic. Among the exhibits of folk arts and crafts: kiyiz - Balkar felt carpets, arjens - Kabardian mats, as well as items of national costume, jewelry, wooden and copper utensils, and musical instruments.

The section of fine art of the republic included paintings, graphics and sculpture by local artists, and over time the collection was supplemented by works of Russian art: portraits and landscapes of Nikolai Tihobrazov, Yuliy Klever, Konstantin Kryzhitsky. In addition, here you can see engravings and graphics by Evgraf Chemesov, Nikolai Ge, sculptures by Fyodor Tolstoy, Pyotr Klodt and Alexander Opekushin.

The museum also houses a small collection of Russian porcelain: objects and products from the Imperial Porcelain Factory and the enterprises of Franz Gardner and Alexei Popov. The section of Soviet art contains paintings by Arkady Rylov, Efim Cheptsov, Nikolai Romadin, graphic sheets by Vladimir Favorsky, Pavel Shillingovsky, Kukryniksy, sculptures by Evgeny Vuchetich, Nikolay Tomsky and Matvey Manizer.

Attractions

The main attraction of Nalchik is the Dolinsk district with its numerous sanatoriums. This is a quiet, relaxed place, nestled between the bustling city and the mountains. Naturally, there are no industries here and even the movement of cars is prohibited. A walker's paradise!

Dolinsk and the city center are separated by the largest in the North Caucasus and one of the largest in Russia, the Central Park of Culture and Leisure named after. Atazhukina. Its cozy alleys are home to dozens of species of trees and shrubs that came from Northern and Southern Europe, Asia and America. Not only the usual linden, ash and spruce trees grow here, but also unique species: Japanese quince, hop hornbeam, Canadian bunduk, Manchurian walnut, Amur lilac. The rare two-lobed gingko, which grew on Earth 260 million years ago, is also doing well in the Atazhukinsky Garden.

Near the park, on Mount Kizilovka, there is an unusual restaurant “Sosruko”. It is visible from almost anywhere in the city, as it rises above Nalchik at an altitude of 600 m. And if the cuisine there can hardly be called original (here, like in most cafes below, they serve Caucasian cuisine), then the appearance of the establishment is impressive: the head of the legendary Nart hero Sosruko holding a torch in his hand. You can get to the restaurant by car or by cable car, the lower station of which is located in the amusement town.

In 2007, a very controversial architectural structure appeared in Nalchik, dedicated to the annexation of Kabarda to Russia. Locals call it the “Arc de Triomphe” so as not to confuse it with a monument of a similar theme located in front of the State Musical Theater building.

It's very easy to figure out who is who. The arch was opened in 2007 on the 450th anniversary of the annexation of Kabarda to Russia, and the bronze statue of Ivan the Terrible’s wife Maria Temryukovna was opened in 1957 on the 400th anniversary of this event.

Another monument dedicated to the strong friendship of Kabardino-Balkaria and Russia is the Green Theater, opened in 1957 in a resort and park area near a lake and a mountain river. The graceful architecture of the building fits perfectly with the linden, beech and elm trees growing nearby. From the chairs of the amphitheater and the terraces located above them, a stunning panorama of the resort Dolinsk and the ridge of majestic mountains opens up.

Nalchik is the capital of the North Caucasus. And what Caucasian doesn’t like fast riding, especially on horseback? For these purposes, the Nalchik Hippodrome was built in 1939.

Horses of the Kabardian breed were extremely popular among the cavalry of the Russian army. They had no equal in endurance and unpretentiousness.

Today, the Nalchik Hippodrome regularly hosts horse races and races, which are extremely popular among local residents and guests of the city: there are practically no empty seats in the stands.
