Museums of Stary Oskol

  • In one of the most beautiful buildings in Stary Oskol, which once belonged to the wealthy merchant Likhushin (who, judging by his surname, managed his affairs dashingly and profited with interest), today there is a local history museum of the city of Stary Oskol. This is a small but very nice building with swallow's nest balconies and a musical windmill on the spire of the bell tower. The museum's collection includes exhibits demonstrating the peculiarities of life and everyday life of Stary Oskol residents in all periods of the city's existence. The museum is open to the public from 10:00 to 18:00 all days of the week except Monday.

True, he does not possess rare ancient paintings, but he fairly widely represents the works of artists of the Soviet and post-Soviet periods, covering such areas as painting, graphics, sculpture and decorative and applied arts. The museum is located in an old mansion with two portals, a pretty courtyard and a garden, which, founded by the first owner, director of the mechanical plant Efimov, is still carefully preserved.
  • Among the original museums of Stary Oskol is the house-museum of V. Ya. Eroshenko
. A blind writer, teacher, Esperantist, Vasily Yakovlevich Eroshenko has become an iconic personality for blind people around the world. He was a wonderful traveler, spoke twelve languages, taught at Tokyo and Peking Universities, and went down in history as a classic of Japanese children's literature. The house where his life began and ended is now a museum.

Ataman Forest

It is notable for its Memorial Complex, where the remains of 2,000 Soviet soldiers who gave their lives in the Great Patriotic War are buried. The complex is a sacred place for citizens and tourists. Behind the memorial there is a forest in which members of the “Search” club still find the remains of Soviet soldiers. Large-scale bloody battles took place in this place in 1942-43. It was through Stary Oskol that the enemy made its way to Stalingrad. But thanks to the honor and courage of our soldiers, he was repulsed, but thousands of soldiers gave their lives for this. The memorial consists of concrete pylons 25 meters high and a Stella 15 meters high. At the very top of the pylons the Order of the Patriotic War is majestically contemplated. At the foot of the monument the eternal flame never goes out. In front of the pylons there are marble plaques with the names of fallen heroes. Along the edges of the complex there are real military weapons.

Victory Park

It is convenient for guests of Elderly Oskol to begin their acquaintance with the city from Victory Park in the Zhukov microdistrict. It is very spacious, beautiful, free and well-appointed. There are modern children's playgrounds and attractions. There is something to do, somewhere to walk and run. Next to the park there are shopping and entertainment centers with all kinds of shops. While children, under the supervision of one adult, walk and play in the park, another can quickly resolve grocery and household issues.

Victory Park is picturesque green alleys and flower beds, a cafe and a summer amphitheater, fountains and a square - one of the main attractions of the city of Elderly Oskol. On the territory of the park there are monuments dedicated to the Great Patriotic War: the stele “City of Military Glory”, the monument to Marshal Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov, the sculpture “After the Battle” created by sculptor Anatoly Shishkov.

The Walk of Fame is also located there: a stele in honor of all Stary Oskol residents who received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in battle, with bronze busts of all holders of this highest military award of our region.

Address: Zhukov microdistrict.

About leisure

There is especially nowhere for young people to relax. In large shopping centers, certain islands of entertainment have been created: bowling alleys, trampolines, game rooms, all sorts of dinosaurs, cafes for every taste and budget. But it gets boring.

Donosaurus - in front of the dinosauria of the Boshe shopping center

Would you like to play sports, please? Several swimming pools, an ice skating rink, workout grounds, football fields, an indoor shady court.

There are a couple of museums with old, dusty curtains. The local theater was recently restored. The artistic director is trying his best to turn Stary Oskol into a city of theatergoers, but I don’t think he succeeds.

Thanks to the efforts of ex-mayor Pavel Shishkin, a real zoo appeared in the city. There is even a real giraffe, a huge lion, several rhinoceroses and a bunch of other exotic creatures living there. In the summer, many people go there with their children; it’s really interesting there.

Historical information about Stary Oskol

After learning the history of the city, walking around it becomes more interesting. Looking at the landmark, you can’t help but imagine the events of ancient times.

Stary Oskol at the beginning of the twentieth century

In 1593, Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich created a decree on the establishment of military settlements. The purpose of their creation was to protect the southern borders from Tatar raids. This year is considered the creation of Stary Oskol, since then an ancient fortress was erected on a hill, surrounded by the Oskol and Oskolets rivers.

However, the roots of the history of the region were laid much earlier. In the Middle Ages, these lands belonged to the Khazar Kaganate. Next to them were settlements of ancient Slavic tribes, who have long been engaged in iron ore mining and metal smelting. These places remained far from the cities of ancient Rus' and were sparsely populated. Next to them was an area called the Wild Field.

Historians have established that in 1300 the village of Ugly was located there (now it is included within the city). And in those days it was subordinate to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and bordered on the Golden Horde.

The territory of the current city was under different subordination: the North-Eastern region belonged to the Golden Horde, and the Central and South-Western regions were subject to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

1571 - the beginning of the construction of protective fortifications against the invasion of the Tatars. This is the time of the foundation of the Ust-Ublinsky fort (on the site of the modern village of Bor-Anpilovka) by order of Ivan IV the Terrible. And only 22 years later the military settlement of Oskol was built. The fortress consisted of two fortification belts:

  • The first belt (outer) was called the “big fort”. Inside it were buildings of serfs.
  • In the inner part (the “small fort”) there was a church, a governor’s courtyard, and a barn for storing bread.

The fortifications were the main point of defense on the southern border of the state. They were subjected to increased attacks by the Tatars. In 1616, the fortress was burned by a Polish-Lithuanian detachment. Within a year the fortification was rebuilt. Settlements appeared nearby.

The middle of the 17th century is the period of construction of the Belgorod defensive line. It included several fortified cities with all kinds of engineering structures. Natural barriers were also used, such as forests, rivers, and swamps. From this time on, the settlement of this area began with the rapid development of animal husbandry, agriculture, and trade. In 1655 it was renamed Stary Oskol, since the city of Tsarev Alekseev was called Novy Oskol. At that time, approximately 1,500 people lived there. The population was dominated by Cossacks, gunners, archers, and traders.

Gradually, the borders of Russia expanded. Stary Oskol is becoming a region in the outback, and not a border fortress. Economic development begins with the construction of the Yelets-Valuiki railway at the beginning of the 19th century. The extraction and processing of iron ore occupies a central place in economic activity. And with the advent of the Oskol Metallurgical Plant, another leap in the economy is observed.

Now Stary Oskol is one of the cities with the fastest development. The population is constantly growing. Over the past 10 years it has grown by 15 thousand people.

Interesting facts about the city:

  • Residents of the city participated in the construction work to create the first Russian fleet near Voronezh and the travels of Peter I across the Sea of Azov.
  • Almost 20 thousand people work at the metallurgical plant.
  • The urban zone includes areas with ancient names - settlements: Gumny, Ezdotskaya, Kazatskaya, Streletskaya and villages: Ugly, Fedoseeva, Neznamovo and others.
  • Famous personalities: Vasily Eroshenko - writer, Mikhail Alisov - creator of the typewriter, Pyotr Fomin - artist, Mikhail Erdenko - violinist.
  • Awarded the title of City of Military Glory.

The central district of Stary Oskol is home to important historical attractions.

Lovers of the oldest temples are showing interest in the Southwestern part. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral are located there.

The northeastern part is otherwise called the new city. Its peculiarity is its architecture, created in a modern style. It attracts sports fans. Those who want to visit go there:

Currently (2010) the Stary Oskol Zoo contains about 470 animals and over 1,500 birds. Green Log Park

This park is very young. It appeared in 2022, when the abandoned territory was turned into an excellent modern city park. On an area of more than 11 hectares, the bed of the Rudka stream was cleared, an embankment was made, thousands of trees and shrubs were planted, pedestrian paths were laid along which lanterns and benches were installed.

Children in this park have plenty to do: there is a skate park, grounds for playing football, volleyball, basketball, for workout classes, as well as all kinds of strength and gaming equipment. Play belts are designed for children of all ages. There is also an inclusive children's playground, comfortable and cute cafes.

About work

Work is hard. No, if you take more and throw it further, you can get settled. But, again, it depends where. If, for example, it’s difficult to get into OEMK or GOK. My former employee was able to find a job as a simple electrician on Stoilensky through tenths of hands. At large enterprises there is a waiting list of children of employees. As you understand, office workers have their own turn, and workers have theirs.

Salaries are also not very encouraging. Just recently, metallurgists became a little indignant, and their wages were raised by 11 percent. The main workshops receive from 40 to 60 thousand, auxiliary from 25. At the plant, the average salary is about 100 thousand rubles, but this is like the average temperature in a hospital. The management there doesn’t complain, just like everywhere else.

Small and medium-sized businesses don’t pay much either. In trading you can’t scrape together more than 20-25. There are plenty of vacancies on the labor exchange, but there are not enough people willing to work for pennies.

The city is, by and large, just a residential area, living in two shifts. Almost all enterprises have a continuous cycle and therefore always work without a break on weekends and holidays.

Temples and churches

Temple of St. Sergei of Radonezh

The Temple of Sergei of Radonezh was built quite recently. The foundation stone was consecrated in 2007, and the built shrine began to fully function in 2016. At each stage, more and more new parts of the temple were consecrated. On July 21, 2010, bells cast specifically for this shrine were installed.

Inside the temple is decorated with paintings, mosaics and icons, which seemed to come to life after the consecration. The lower church was consecrated in honor of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God, which was especially revered in the family of Alexander Nevsky, the heavenly patron of Stary Oskol.

Church of the Ascension of the Lord

Address: st. Mira, 24 Telephone Opening hours: 08:00 – 14:00, daily Cost: free

The oldest temple was founded in 1870, and it was consecrated twelve years later in honor of the Archangel Michael and the healer Panteleimon. In the first half of the twentieth century, when the authorities fought against the Orthodox Church, Father Andrei, who served in the church, was arrested. Because of this, the temple suspended its activities; in those days, the church premises were used for storing grain.

In the 1980s, restoration of the temple began, and in 2011 the church was crowned with new bells, purchased with funds from an unknown donor. Currently, the architectural monument has been completely restored and is functioning.

Temple of Princess Olga and Anastasia

Address: st. Tokareva, 4/1

Construction of the small church began in 2007 and ended in August 2008, when it was fully consecrated by Archbishop John of Belgorod and Stary Oskol.

When creating the temple, only wood was used: the building itself was built from larch, and the domes with crosses were made from aspen. Oak was used to make the altar and iconostasis. All trees were brought from Arkhangelsk forests.

The building has a small refectory and a tented bell tower. The church often hosts services, which are attended by students from Orthodox gymnasiums.

If you have not yet chosen where you will live and want to save money when booking, we recommend using the RoomGuru service. Firstly, it contains hotels, apartments and guest houses from many different booking systems, so you won’t miss out on a worthwhile option. Secondly, you can immediately compare prices for one place in different services and book where it is cheaper (this is not always Booking!).

Some children's entertainment centers in Stary Oskol

A large selection of entertainment can be found in children's play centers, which are located in Stary Oskol shopping and entertainment centers. This is, in particular, “Bose-Park” (the “Bose” shopping center in the Olminsky microdistrict); “Childland” (Maskarad shopping center on Molodezhny Prospekt, 10); “Country of Madagascar” (Lenin St., 22); “Treasure Island” (microdistrict Nadezhda, 5).

For example, Boshe Park is proud that it does not have a single electronic attraction, but there is a tall land slide (8 meters high), a tubing track, a giant three-story labyrinth, a “Vulcan” and a large-scale pirate ship located in the center of a large pool made of balloons, with cannons on the deck and various attractions.

"Park Boshe"

The rope park trails are laid above this ship. Nearby there is the region's first sports climbing wall for adults and children. In the depths of Boshe-Park there are cleverly located thematically decorated special rooms for children's parties and entertainment programs. The total area of this largest children's entertainment center in Stary Oskol exceeds five thousand square meters.

This is a superb indoor entertainment center for children of all ages, the likes of which would be hard to find even in much larger cities. But the first positions on the list of places to visit with children in Stary Oskol are rightfully occupied by places for outdoor entertainment - the magnificent parks of this city and, of course, its large zoo with a rich collection of animals and birds. It can be difficult to remove them from these places.

Museum of Military Glory

This museum, dedicated to the events of the Great Patriotic War, arose and developed on the basis of the school museum at school No. 34. A search club of high school students also worked there, collecting materials on the history of the Great Patriotic War.

In 2001, a separate room with an area of 36 m2 was allocated for the Museum of Military Glory. Since 2002, a school-wide action “Let's create a museum with our own hands” was announced. The museum collection began to be increasingly replenished with new acquisitions. High school students - members of the search club - compiled a photo chronicle of the events of the edge in the period 1941-1945.

By September 2004, the museum had completed the creation of the “Front-Line Dugout” exhibition, the “Configuration and Insignia” exhibition had been launched, glazed shelves in the center of the hall were equipped, and the area of the “Great Patriotic War Awards” exhibition had been expanded.

Finally, in 2022, the museum received a spacious room in the house at the address: microdistrict Rudnichny, 14a, on 400 square meters and its richest exhibition was located. The halls display, among other things, samples of weapons and ammunition from the times of the Great Patriotic War, found by participants in the Memory Watch at battle sites; ammunition of various types of troops. Under the glass display cases there are many documents from those distant years: passes, combat leaflets, badges and military awards of the Red Army soldiers, seals and stamps of military units, medical instruments, sapper accessories, personal belongings - from bowlers to pins...

Address: microdistrict Rudnichny, 14a.

It began its work in 2008, but has already managed to become a member of the Euro-Asian Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which unites the best zoological gardens of two continents. 9 hectares are home to lions, leopards, bears, ostriches, Indian elephants and more than 80 species of animals. The pheasant is considered the most revered animal, one might say, the old-timer and elder here, since the zoo opened at one time on the site of a pheasant farm.
  • In the Ilyina farmstead, not far from Stary Oskol, the Stary Oskol Arboretum
. This is a real find for those who are tired of the urban kingdom of asphalt and concrete. More than 70 plant species grow in the arboretum, including many exotic specimens. For those who like not only to wander among the greenery, but also to learn in more detail about botanical subtleties, there is an open lecture hall.

Architectural monuments

Several ancient buildings have been preserved in Stary Oskol, but some of them can only be viewed from the outside. At the address st. Oktyabrskaya, 20 stands a beautifully restored two-story mansion in an Art Nouveau style that is uncharacteristic for the city. This is the former oil mill of the merchant Dyakov, where the Slavyanka confectionery factory now operates.

Turminsky Pharmacy on the street. Lenina, 3, although recognized as an architectural monument, is not in very good condition. This white one-story building in the eclectic style with elements of Russian architecture was built in 1912 by pharmacist Turminsky. The pharmacy did not operate for long, after which the building was occupied by the editorial office of the Izvestia newspaper.

On the street Volodarsky, 14 there is a two-story red brick City School. The semicircular portico, arched windows and decorated facade make it attractive and bright. Currently there is restoration going on there.

Quest club "Quest machine"

This gaming club has several themed rooms, decorated according to different thematic themes. To complete each of them you are given 90 minutes - an hour and a half of game time. It is filled with secrets, puzzles, vivid emotions and impressions.

The goal of each game is to escape the room within 90 minutes. Everything here is set up like in a computer game, only for real: you can touch and pick up furnishings, open cabinets and doors, discover locks, solve codes and crack safes.

This is ideal entertainment for a cheerful company, where everything is logical, each object leads to a clue, the solution to each riddle provides a key, the key opens the next door with a new unusual object, and so on. And the administrator watches all the actions of visitors on a video camera, and can always help or give a hint if the need arises.

Kholkovsky Monastery

The Holy Trinity Kholkovsky Monastery is located near the village of Kholki. This is one of the most ancient shrines in the country. Legend has it that it was founded at the meeting place of Prince Igor Svyatoslavovich and his brother Vsevolod before the epic campaign against the Polovtsians in 1185. In the so-called Gesto Mountains there are caves of the monastery. In order to shelter from Tatar raids in time, the Gesture Gatehouse was built on the highest hill. From it, observations were made of the steppe, from where unkind horsemen could appear at any moment. In the mid-eighteenth century, a wooden chapel was erected in front of the entrance to the cave. The monastery was persecuted in the eighteenth century and was closed. In the thirties of the nineteenth century, Prince Golitsyn tried to resume the activities of the holy monastery, sparing no expense of his own, but, unfortunately, he never succeeded.

Nowadays, among the picturesque green hills, you can see the white stone chapel, at some distance from it, the Transfiguration Church. The churches amaze with their amazing, modest beauty. Snow-white walls, not blue, but somewhat gray roofs and magnificent golden domes that you can admire endlessly. There are stone paths from hill to hill, flanked by lanterns. The paths picturesquely run from the temple to the chapel, and then further to the caves.
