Engels - Sights and History of the city - what to see? +Photo and Video
Sights of Engels.
Engels is a city in the Saratov region, which is easy to find on the map. The city was founded in 1747, and the construction of the railway gave a strong impetus to the development of infrastructure. Over time, the city of Engels, named after Friedrich Engels, became a major trading market in the region. Today Engels is a city with developed industry; many large enterprises and factories are located on its territory. And its monuments and museums attract many tourists. Let's take a closer look at the names and descriptions of the main attractions of Engels below.
Monument to the deported Germans of the Volga region
The city of Engels belonged to Germany before World War II. Once upon a time, the territories of these lands were donated to foreigners by Empress Catherine. During the Soviet period, by decree of Stalin, all Germans were expelled from the lands of the Volga region.
In memory of the expelled foreigners, it was decided to erect sculptures. The author of the project was the famous sculptor A. Sadovsky. A huge granite slab was installed, the height of which is two meters. And next to it there are two bronze sculptures. The first figure serves as an image of German exiles, and the second personifies the hope for the future of the Germans, that someday they will return from their expelled land to their home.
Location: Lenin Square - 13.
By boat along the Volga from Engels
From May to September, a pleasure boat runs from the Lazurny pier in the city of Engels. True, not every day, but only from Friday to Sunday and on holidays too. And there are only four excursions: at 12, 14, 16 and 18.00. The walk lasts about an hour and costs 250 rubles per adult and 150 per child. The steamer sails along the Volga River, passes under the road bridge connecting Saratov and Engels, makes a small loop and returns back. For all residents of the Volga region, this is a very ordinary attraction, but for those who miss the smooth surface of the river, this walk will definitely lift their spirits.
Well, we’re tired, we’re going to rest. Ahead is an inspection of Saratov itself.
A walk through the sights of the city of Engels, a trip to the landing site of Yuri Gagarin, a trip on a river boat along the Volga River, and much more!

This quiet and cozy square is the end of the long Youth Alley, which stretches here from the Children’s Park itself. In the center stands the “Fantaser” monument in honor of Lev Kassil, the Soviet writer and editor of the beloved children’s magazine “Murzilka”.
If you want to find a quiet place to sit and relax, then you should come here. This place is loved by students and mothers with strollers. From here you can walk to the Children's Park.
Infrastructure: a round alley lined with paving stones, with benches and curly maples. Nearby there is a polytechnic school and a children's hospital.
How to find: Freedom Square, MFC stop (routes 1, 3, 4, 22, 27, 279).
Engelskaya embankment
The main pedestrian street of the city a hundred or two hundred years ago was already a place of rest for the townspeople. Boats were tied up near the shore after a walk along the river, and in winter they went ice skating on the frozen Volga.
In the middle of the last century, the city of Engels could have disappeared under water. Having learned about the plans to build the Kamyshin hydroelectric power station, residents came out with a demand to stop the development of the project. It was only thanks to the persistence of the townspeople and pressure on the local authorities that the dam on the Engels embankment never appeared.
Now there is a wonderful recreation area on the embankment. There are benches, lanterns, gazebos, cozy cafes and entertainment centers here. On a metal fence, as in many other cities in different countries, newlyweds hang a padlock for good luck.
Monuments of Saratov
The monument to Stolypin in Engels was not erected by chance. It was this outstanding citizen who was the governor of the Saratov region since 1903, for 3 years.
The monument to the expelled Germans was erected in Engels for a reason. During the reign of Catherine 2, part of the Saratov region was donated to foreigners.
With the advent of Soviet power, Stalin ordered the expulsion of the Germans from the lands of the Volga region. During that cruel time, many foreigners died from the cold and living conditions. In memory of the expulsion of foreign people, a memorial monument was erected in Engels.
The Chernobyl monument is depicted in the form of a hand hanging over a mound. Symbolizing the terrible nuclear energy that claimed the lives of more than 500 local residents. Many of them did not return home.
Installation – “I love Engels”, with three-dimensional letters and hearts, a popular place for photo sessions among young people. You need to have time to take a memorable photo for all guests of the city.
