What to see in Kazan with children, 10 interesting places to visit

House-Museum of Vasily Aksenov

The house-museum of Vasily Aksenov, a famous writer, is located on one of the central streets of Kazan in an old mansion. It recreates the atmosphere of Soviet times and Aksenov’s office.

The work of the House-Museum is based on the concept of Vasily Pavlovich Aksenov himself: “This should be a literary and jazz club. There should be a small auditorium... Something that would open the doors to the sprouts of the city's intelligentsia. Where would creative people meet..."

Every month the house hosts thematic meetings with famous writers and poets, as well as literary and musical evenings. Every year in November the museum hosts the literary and music festival “Aksenov Fest”. The festival was first held in Kazan in 2007 and was dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the writer. It was attended by Vasily Aksenov himself, Andrei Makarevich, Bella Akhmadullina and many other famous poets, writers and musicians. At the same time, the Star Ticket award was established to support young talents.

The opening of the Vasily Aksenov House-Museum took place on November 13, 2009 in the house where the writer spent his childhood. This building is a typical 19th century city manor with a mezzanine and basement. In the 1930s, the house was turned into a communal apartment, where, after the arrest of his parents, the future writer lived with his relatives. V. Aksenov’s childhood and youth are closely connected with the capital of Tatarstan, so it is no coincidence that many of his stories are filled with Kazan stories.

Which museums in Kazan should you go to with children?

It was with great pleasure that we spent our holidays in Kazan at the beginning of April 2022 (from April 10 to April 12, 2019). A group of 10th grade schoolchildren, teachers and parents from Moscow. I wanted the excursions to be organized and conducted in a way that would be as interesting as possible for children, and “Mysteries of Kazan” did everything for this. Three days flew by in one breath. The organization of the excursion was carried out in advance and Yulia Zhiznevskaya helped us draw up a program taking into account all my (as the organizer of the class) wishes and with the possibility of “interfering” with them over three days. Ayrat Nurkhamatov was in charge of coordination. Thanks to them, everything worked out for us and everyone had an unforgettable pleasure. Three days are, of course, not enough to explore Kazan. We checked into the hotel the day before, because... arrived in the evening. We were especially pleased with the Kazan airport that the evening flight arrived on time, and we caught the last train, which arrives at the railway station directly in the center of Kazan. We walked to the hotel. We lived in Tatarskaya Sloboda in the Tatar Inn hotel. A very picturesque place on the shore of Lake Nizhny Kaban. Walking distance to Bauman Street and the nearest metro station takes a leisurely 10 minutes.

This is what we managed to do during these wonderful three days - Kazan pleased us not only with its hospitality, delicious cuisine, but also with wonderful sunny warm days:

1 day. Sightseeing tour by bus with stops and inspection of the most interesting places. Lunch at a restaurant with Tatar cuisine. Next we had free time. Dinner at a restaurant next to the Shalyapin hotel with Tatar cuisine. And after dinner we went on an excursion “Twilight Kazan” by bus and on foot to places that are not usually visited by tourists. A very unusual, educational and interesting excursion - a quest. Despite the fact that the children “swayed” towards the middle, we unanimously guessed the spell and restored the balance of light and dark forces. I highly recommend this excursion, and despite the fact that it runs from 19:00 to 23:00, you don’t need to save your energy for it. Everything was thought out by the organizers and “we didn’t crawl without legs.” And we received a lot of interesting stories from the guides and unusual photos.

Day 2 was the most difficult, since all the excursions were on foot, but even at the very end of the quest, we adults had enough strength to beat our children. We split into two groups and went on excursions: one group to the Kazan Kremlin, the second - through the streets of Kazan “Window to the Past”. Then they changed. Special thanks for the “idea” of such an excursion as “Window to the Past”. The development of technology here played an important role in introducing the history of Kazan. Using VR glasses, we were shown the past of Kazan 200, 100, 50, 30 years ago. Well done, the staff of the Mysteries of Kazan - it was not in vain that they spent a lot of time looking for old photographs of interesting sights of the city and “fitted” them into modern Kazan. Unforgettable, educational and impressive. We even forgot to take a photo, we were so carried away. After lunch, where we managed to rest a little, we visited the Boratynsky Museum, and also dividing into two groups: children versus adults, we went through the quest “The Stars Are Lighting Up in Kazan”, in which we looked for the places where the boys grew up, lived, and loved to walk. 19th century, which later became famous. The winner, of course, was the experience of adults in navigating on a map. But everyone was happy. Special thanks to the animator girls who supervised us at the points. Our children even recorded on video how they performed the task of reading the roles of the remade poem “Petrel”, and we didn’t even guess.

Day 3. On the way to Sviyazhsk we stopped and conducted an external inspection of the Temple of All Religions. Then, with an hour and a half stop, we visited Innopolis (analogous to our Skolkovo). Where we were shown how to live, study, work and relax in this new innovative city. We had lunch near Sviyazhsk at the wonderful country club “Sviyaga” and then went to Sviyazhsk.

All our excursions were conducted by Yulia Zhiznevskaya. In addition to the Boratynsky Museum and the Kremlin, another guide accompanied us there. Special huge thanks to Yulia? a person who really loves his city, its history, its culture. I am ready to answer all questions and tell you about Russian life in Kazan and about Tatar life, about how peoples so different in religion live and exist peacefully in this city. A person truly dedicated to his work and doing it with full dedication. Thanks to all the employees of Riddles of Kazan, you are great. We didn’t meet everyone, but judging by how everything worked out for us and how much pleasure we got from the days spent in Kazan, you are all masters of your craft. It’s not for nothing that I looked through a bunch of travel agencies on the Internet and found you. Thank you again, I wish you to continue to come up with such interesting excursions. We will recommend it to everyone and will definitely return to Kazan for new experiences.

Best regards, Elena Izotova. Moscow. Parent Committee of School No. 1455.

  • Sights of Kazan - what to see in 2-3 days in Kazan

"Museum of Happy Childhood"

In the museum you will find many exhibits of the Soviet era: from sportswear to rubber toys and baby dolls, from school textbooks to technology, which has a separate room full of slot machines and other technical achievements of that time. The older generation will remember the soda fountain, and teenagers will be able to see The world's first Mac.

On the ground floor there is a reconstruction of a Soviet school classroom with old desks, school bags, school certificates, posters, a wall newspaper and other related exhibits.

The second floor is more spacious - a complete immersion in a Soviet nursery: an imitation of cozy rooms has been created. Light music with an ironic sign “Have you rocked to Boney M?”, children's sandals for every taste standing nearby. A wooden box containing retro Pepsi Cola that can be purchased to support the museum.

You can touch and take photographs of the exhibits here, and try on fashionable branded clothes from the past, pioneer uniforms, and skis. It will be interesting both for children who missed that era, and for adults who will be able to plunge into a bygone childhood.

Museum of Socialist Life

The Museum of Socialist Life is a unique place where everyone takes a trip to the already forgotten 70s–80s of the twentieth century.

This is a real communal apartment in a house built in the mid-19th century: brick walls, old wiring, cast-iron radiators. Not only the interior, but also the exhibitions match the museum: “USSR from Space”, “Toy: Made in the USSR”, “Female Beauty in the Soviet Union”, “Jeans as a Cult”, “Countries of the Soviet Pioneer”, “Bad Habits in the USSR” ", "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" and many others.

The main theme of the Museum of Socialist Life is the positive emotions that arise in visitors when looking at objects from the 70s and 80s, which you can pick up without fear of dropping or spoiling, because in order to break what was “made in the USSR” you have to try hard.

The exhibits were not selected on the basis of special value (although there are some) or quantity

What is important is the history that is associated with each thing, and the emotions that it can awaken. As soon as you take up table hockey or look into an old kaleidoscope, half-forgotten memories arise in your memory

Museum of Happy Childhood

Address: Universitetskaya, 9 Opening hours: Mon-Sun – 10:00-20:00 Cost: adult - 250 rubles, children - 150 rubles.

Branch of the Museum of Socialist Life. The Museum of Happy Childhood is the very place where every adult can feel like a child, plunge into the happiest time and for a moment again become a carefree schoolchild or the most mischievous girl in the yard.

The exhibition, collected from things and objects familiar to everyone, starting from a recreated school class and ending with the real moped that every boy dreamed of, will take you, like a real time machine, to a whole era - the era of youth and youth, which is sometimes so lacking in our busy adult lives.

Museum of Konstantin Vasiliev

We definitely advise you to look into the museum dedicated to one of the most controversial masters of fine art in the USSR, Konstantin Vasiliev. His paintings are considered an example of originality and special freedom of expression through painting. It is in Kazan that the largest collection of works by this artist is collected. Who is Konstantin Vasiliev, and what is his role in the development of Kazan art?

Vasiliev’s works are mythological. They are distinguished by the mysticism of their images and the fabulousness of their characters. The artist himself was a native of Kazan and began his creative career at the Moscow Art School at the Surikov Institute. The Kazan Art School, where Vasiliev also studied, can boast that a famous artist was among the students. Unfortunately, fame did not come to the master of the brush immediately and not even during his lifetime. Only after the death of the artist (at that time he was only 34 years old), his work “saw” the light in the form of collections of reproductions, documentaries and the title of laureate of the Komsomol Prize of Tatarstan, awarded to Vasiliev. And in 2013, on one of the streets of Kazan, a whole museum appeared on two floors of the artist’s fabulous paintings.

Museum of Konstantin Vasiliev

The exhibition consists of more than a hundred colorful and truly interesting paintings. Among them you can see portraits, landscapes, and scenes from mythology. Mighty heroes, maidens of extraordinary beauty and Russian, snowy winter are the artist’s favorite images and themes. Abstraction and symbolism are considered the main genres of Vasiliev’s work.

Address : st. Bauman, 29/11 Ticket prices : adults - 160 rubles, pensioners - 80 rubles, schoolchildren and students - 60 rubles.

Amir Mazitov Museum

Speaking about the cultural heritage of Kazan, one cannot fail to mention the Museum of Amir Mazitov, a famous Tatar painter. He, being an Honored Artist of the RSFSR, is known for his paintings “Morning at a Rest”, “Winter’s Tale”, “Drummer”, etc., which complement exhibitions in leading art galleries in Russia.

The artist himself, at one time, was a student of the Kazan Art School and the Surikov Institute. After training, he devoted some time to teaching in Yaroslavl, after which he decided to return to Kazan. Here he continued his creative path. Gabdulla Tukay is a young Tatar poet who lived only 27 years, but left behind an exceptionally good memory and an invaluable mark in the publishing and literary business. He is especially famous for becoming one of the founders of modern Tatar literature.

The Museum named after “Tatar Pushkin,” as it was called by contemporaries, was founded in 1986 in a 19th-century building. It was here that the main stages took place in the creative development of the young poet, who worked with many city editorial offices.

What interesting things can you see in the museum’s exhibition? First of all, I would like to note the atmosphere that reigns in the museum halls. Due to the presence of original things and authentic furniture in the interior, it is easy to plunge into the spirit of a bygone era. The surrounding environment seems to be “revitalized” by numerous details reflecting everyday and cultural life in Kazan at the end of the 19th century.

The Central Park of Culture of Kazan, like its Moscow counterpart, is named after the proletarian writer Maxim Gorky. On an area of 1 hectare there are walking alleys, monuments and memorials, sports and recreational facilities.

The range of attractions is currently small; a significant part of them was dismantled during the construction of the Millennium Bridge, but traditional entertainment remains in the park for the youngest holidaymakers - children's carousels and an inflatable trampoline.

A train runs along the central alley of this Kazan landmark. The central fountain, installed in 2014 and resembling a chessboard, not only serves as a park decoration, but also brings a lot of joy to children; during the warm season, they frolic and play with water jets.

Exposition

The official opening of the museum took place in 2011, but it has been functioning since the 90s. It presents a variety of household items of Soviet citizens: from pioneer flags to irons. There's a little commentary underneath each item, so you won't need a guide here.

The museum assembled its collection with the help of ordinary Kazan residents: they gave away old things for free. The entire exhibition is divided into thematic blocks:

  • “Jeans as a cult”;
  • “Female beauty in the Soviet Union”, etc.

Among the exhibits you can find objects, clothes and other belongings of famous artists. For example, A. Makarevich’s jacket.

Interesting Facts

Children are interested in museums and exhibitions with an interactive or playful component. A number of Kazan cultural institutions are focused on the younger generation in their activities.

Museum of Natural History of Tatarstan

  • Address: 12, Vakhitovsky district, Kremlin territory.

At first glance, the institution may not seem very suitable for a child. A serious science museum focused on the prehistoric past and geological history.

However, the exhibition presented here will most likely interest inquisitive children: behind the boring definitions of “paleontology” and “scientific history” are hidden the secrets of antiquity and interesting exhibits - the remains of ancient lizards, mammoths and cave bears.

For some reason, everything connected with the “age of dinosaurs” attracts many children. The museum staff understands this very well, which is why educational and entertainment programs are regularly held at its base, which will become an amazing adventure for children and an important step on the path to understanding the world.

Residence Kysh Babai

  • Address: st. Central, 1, New Kyrlay.

New Year is the most favorite children's holiday. At any other time of the year, a trip to visit Santa Claus will be an excellent gift and an exciting journey for a child. Kysh Babai is a Tatar variation of the main New Year's character. Once in Kazan, a child will definitely want to get to know him. And although grandfather does not live in the city itself, but in the village of New Kyrlay, it is worth taking time to visit him.

Living with Kysh Babai is Kar Kyzy, who can be considered the Tatar analogue of the Snow Maiden, but unlike the Russian fairy-tale heroine, Kysh Babai is not a granddaughter, but a daughter. In total, there are 14 characters in the retinue of the Tatar Grandfather Frost, who will conduct an exciting program for children.

The children will be immersed in a fairy tale, get to know the house and, of course, gifts. Like Russian Santa Claus, Kysh Babai can read poetry and sing songs - they speak Russian perfectly. All programs and events at the Residence are conducted by default in the state language of the country, and Tatar-language programs can be ordered by prior arrangement.

What they talk about in school as something distant and incomprehensible is presented here in a visual and exciting way, and is accessible even to the little ones. The excursions here do not have a “scenario”; the staff do not impose anything, do not follow a plan, the program is built based on the child’s interest. The museum regularly hosts master classes and science shows.

"Real Astronomy"
