Yaroslavl, built in the 11th century, is one of the oldest Russian cities. Its historical center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The unique nature, accessibility and beautiful places of the city make Yaroslavl attractive to tourists. It is included in the famous excursion route “Golden Ring”.

Having arrived here and having only a couple of days of free time, you should plan in advance what to see in Yaroslavl from beautiful places. The list may include not only historical monuments, beautiful cathedrals and squares, but also modern cultural and entertainment complexes.

A little about Yaroslavl

The administrative center of the Yaroslavl region (Russian Federation) is part of the “Golden Ring” and ranks third in terms of population in the central district, which is 608,722 people. The metropolis is a junction station of railway and road routes and communications in the directions of Ivanovo (341 km), Moscow (282 km), Kirov (696 km), Vologda (134 km), Kostroma (84 km).

The city is advantageously located on the Yaroslavl-Kostroma lower reaches on both sides of the Volga River, not far from the Kotorosl flowing into it. The area occupied by the settlement is 206 square meters. km, time zone - Moscow time.

The climate of the Yaroslavl region is temperate continental, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Winters in the city last more than 5 months - moderately snowy, cold with an average temperature of -8-11°C, although there are frosts down to -40°C and thaws up to +17°C. The average height of the snow crust is 35-50 cm, which occurs from mid-November to March.

Spring comes in the first half of April, when the snow melts and the temperature rises to +4°C. Autumn is characterized by cloudy weather and high humidity up to 85%, with an average monthly temperature of +4°C.

The highest level of precipitation occurs in the summer (about 70-80 mm per month). The season is characterized by high humidity and moderate heat with an average temperature from +16° to +18°C, sometimes hot days are observed - over 30°C.

pros

  • In winter it is impossible to travel, as in summer, with tents in cars. For a comfortable stay you need a warm hotel. Vologda has a sufficient number (more than 40) of guest houses and hotels from budget to expensive options. All are located close to the center, because Vologda is a small capital, with about 300 thousand inhabitants. And you can travel the entire city from beginning to end simply by bus.
  • Taxis are especially important in winter. Tourists in Vologda don’t have to bother too much with buses; taxi prices in the city are more than reasonable. But private operators at the station often deceive tourists and inflate the price for the trip, so it is better to call a taxi through an operator.
  • In winter, the Vologda River turns into one continuous ski track, which will especially appeal to sports enthusiasts. You can also ride around on cheesecakes, which are immediately available for rent. And on New Year's holidays, Father Frost invites children to ride on a sleigh and on a snowmobile. Locals will gladly ride horses, ponies, donkeys and even camels for a small fee.
  • In winter, the river attracts not only lovers of winter fun, but also connoisseurs of winter fishing. If you have the desire and your own fishing rod, you can drill a hole there and go fishing for free. You can ask local fishermen for an ice screw.
  • In winter, the city is decorated with New Year's illumination. And the ancient houses, mansions, temples along the central streets amaze with their mystery and beauty. In the evening the entire city center is in bright lights. According to tradition, on New Year's holidays there are daytime festivities on the two main squares of the city, mummers light a fire in the Kremlin garden and treat everyone to free mulled wine.
  • Vologda museums and galleries will help guests of the city to warm up and have an informative time. Of these, we can highlight the Lace Museum - this is a whole universe woven by the hands of lacemakers. Also in Vologda, most of the existing religious buildings are accessible for visiting in winter. In total there are 63 churches and 12 monasteries in the city.

A little apart from the center of Yaroslavl there is a large Ferris wheel “Golden Ring”. The height of the wheel is 65 meters, and from this height you can see many of the sights of Yaroslavl.

The cabins have comfortable seats and climate control. Each cabin is dedicated to one of the cities of the Golden Ring. Inside are photographs of landmarks that are official or unofficial symbols of the city. There are several wheelchair accessible cabins.

Ticket prices are relatively low - 100-350 rubles , depending on the category of visitor and ticket. There are, however, also VIP cabins - there are 1200-1800 rubles. VIP cabins have soft sofas and pillows.

The Golden Ring Ferris wheel is located at: Kotoroslnaya embankment, 53.

View of the city from the Ferris wheel

The Ferris wheel can also be reached on foot from most of the city's attractions and, in addition to the wheel, you can also go to the Millennium Park and the Krokhinsky Forest Park.

The only thing is that for some reason they put a fence around the Millennium Park, which surrounds the entire perimeter of the park. Moreover, it is clear that this was an absolute improvisation; before, no fences were supposed to be there. Therefore, if you go to ride the Ferris wheel, do not try to take a shortcut through the park. Bypass, only bypass!

Dumpling house ProTesto on the Volga embankment

As the sign suggests, the cafe specializes in dumplings and, apparently, dumplings. But there is so much on the menu! However, we decided not to deviate from the plan. The spinach dumplings were a little bland despite the cheese sauce. They were delicious with fish, but we listened and took them “in a pot”, where they grated tasteless cheese on top, which had become stale during cooking.

But there we tried for the first time the excellent local beer “Plan-B”. And then they couldn’t see it on the menu anywhere else or buy it in the store.

I liked the lawn on the ceiling and the weird “hipster” rope lamps.

Reviews:

Every time we come to Yaroslavl, we go to this restaurant. Well done, they keep their brand. There is excellent Russian cuisine and atmosphere here. You can immerse yourself in history and remember your favorite film “Ivan Vasilyevich changes his profession...”. There are few such colorful restaurants in Russia.

Very tasty food, a decent selection of dishes, as well as various infusions. Pleasant compliments, for example, “overseas caviar.” Good evening show program.

We visited in February 2022. Very cozy place. We ordered borscht, fish soup, dumplings, herring under a fur coat and pies. Everything is very delicious. The waiter speaks with quotes from the movie.

The food is high quality. The check price is average. The service is cool: the waiters have pseudonyms (old Russian names), and they address you only as “Boyarin” and “Boyarynya”. The menu includes dishes that reference the film. For example, “Twisted hare kidneys.” And as a compliment, you will definitely be served “overseas eggplant caviar” (in the same volume as in the film, i.e. a teaspoon).

Monuments

Among the attractions of the ancient city are the following monuments:

1. Yaroslav the Wise - the creator of the city. The monument is located on Epiphany Square. The statue faces in the direction of Moscow, as if welcoming visitors. In one hand the prince holds a lowered sword - a symbol of peace, and in the other - a model of the structure of the city.

The pedestal is decorated with frescoes:

  • princely coat of arms;
  • fight with a bear;
  • ruler over papers.

2. Trinity - a composition of sculptures located in the oldest part of the city near Strelka (the location of the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosl rivers) - the only one in Russia. 5. Chapel of Our Lady of Kazan , located in front of the entrance to the Transfiguration Monastery. The monument serves as a chapel, as it houses the faces of saints. There is an inscription on the pedestal that it was built in honor of the People's Army of 1612.

Trinity-Sergius Varnitsky Monastery

The Trinity-Sergius Varnitsa Monastery has been counting the milestones of history since 1482. The name and construction are associated with the name of the monk Sergei of Radonezh, to whom even Dmitry Donskoy himself came for a blessing. The saint's parting words helped the Russian soldiers win.

During the Polish-Lithuanian invasion, all valuables were removed from the monastery, after which the conquerors set fire to the building. It burned to the ground. A charter from Tsar Fyodor Mikhailovich revived the monastery to life.

The hurricane that swept through Rostov the Great at the beginning of the 19th century tore the roof off the cathedral. Countess Orlova donated 500 rubles for restoration.

During the Soviet years, the monastery did not function: it was used as an incubator. And only quite recently the cathedral took on its former appearance.

The Tolgsky monastery was originally opened as a men's monastery in 1314 by Bishop Prokhor of Rostov. Much later, having survived the onslaught of the communists, and having been closed for sixty years, the monastery reopened its doors, but as the first convent of the RSFSR.

The Tolga Monastery was built on the site where, according to legend, the miraculous icon of the Tolga Mother of God was revealed to Bishop Prokhor of Rostov. In the 16th century, the monastery was practically destroyed by Polish invaders, who killed 46 monastic servants. Later, the monastery was restored, and a chapel was built on the site of the mass grave of the monks. Every year a funeral litany is held in memory of the monks.

The Tolgsky monastery was never deprived of the attention of Russian emperors and empresses, and often received generous gifts from them, many of which are kept there to this day.
