The Russian Far East is colorful and unique. An amazing land of endless forests, volcanoes and geysers attracts tourists eager to see amazing natural wonders and come into contact with almost pristine nature. The region is unevenly populated. Life here is in full swing only around a few policies. These include Ussuriysk, which grew out of the village of Nikolskoye, founded in 1866. Interestingly, a thousand years earlier, on the lands now occupied by the second largest settlement in the Primorsky Territory, Suibin, the capital of a vast province of the Chinese Empire during the Jin Dynasty, flourished. The settlement of immigrants from the Voronezh and Astrakhan provinces soon became an important trade and logistics center of Primorye, receiving city status just three decades after its founding. The progressive development of Ussuriysk continued during the Soviet era. Then large industrial enterprises, numerous educational, cultural and educational institutions appeared here. With the beginning of the new century, the enormous tourism potential of the Far East began to unfold. As a result, the number of vacationers wanting to admire the sights of Ussuriysk increases every year. The reader will find photos and descriptions of the most interesting places in the policy in the article.
Attractions
Ussuriysk City Theater
One of the famous architectural monuments in the city is the Ussuriysk City Theater, the former People's House named after the Pyankov brothers. It was built in 1909. The construction was supervised by A.A. Vinogradov. The author of the project, according to local historian O.B. Lynsha, was the Vladivostok architect Meshkov. The city theater settled in this building in 1958. Before that, it was located in a building on the street. Kalinina.
Military Commandant's Office building
Beautiful mansion on the street. Oktyabrskaya, 75, occupied today by the military commandant’s office, belonged to E.E. Maerovich.
Fizmat USPI (Building of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics USPI)
The building of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the USPI (former women's gymnasium), according to the authors, was built in 1906. I assume that the indicated date of construction of “Illusion” by A.S. Nikitina (later Globus, Zarya cinema) - 1908 - is also incorrect, since in the reference books of 1909 and 1911. he is not included. And in local newspapers until 1911 there was no advertising of this “Illusion”.
Inaccuracies in the book “Monuments of history and culture of Primorsky Krai”
City Museum The book says that in the building on the street. Krasnoznamennaya, 80 (this is the address of the city museum) was the first public school. According to the authors, since 1896 it became a four-year city school. In fact, this building housed a parochial school (it’s sad if the authors don’t know the difference between a public city school and a parochial school).
Military registration and enlistment office and central grocery store
The version that the current building of the military registration and enlistment office and the central grocery store was occupied by the Military Presence and the South Ussuri Police Department is also incorrect. Building with a turret on the street. Kalinina, 52 (formerly Michurinskaya) belonged to the trading house Kunst and Albers.
house on the street Peasant, A.P. Chekhov
These are not all the errors found in the book “Monuments of History and Culture of the Primorsky Territory.” In this regard, I began to have doubts: did V.K. Arsenyev really write his book in the house on the street. Peasant? After all, no one has yet documented this fact. Maybe this is the same myth as A.P.’s visit to our city. Chekhov
Questionable fact of newspaper publication
In one of the newspaper publications, where an ignorant author named the Nikolsk Hotel I.S. Chulkova Kozlov's hotel, it was naively assumed that Chekhov stayed there while passing through. Fantasies. This couldn’t happen because the writer was “not on his way.” And he apparently didn’t want to make a detour in order to check in in our city. Don't believe me? Read A.P. Chekhov.
The above errors and many others were included in the “Lists of historical and cultural monuments of Ussuriysk” and from them are replicated not only in “historical” articles and books, but also in official documents. Unfortunately, when these lists were compiled, no one made sure that information about the monuments was recorded indicating the source of information. Then today there would be no need to puzzle over whether Titov was in fact the owner of the building of the current People's Court but st. Frunze, 95 or not. Because the indicated Mr. Titov does not appear at all in the lists of homeowners of Nikolsk-Ussuriysk before 1917. So guess: either the last name is written incorrectly, or it’s just someone’s invention.

The city is interesting for its pre-revolutionary history, unique architectural monuments of bygone times, and the possibility of recreational, beach, and hiking tourism.
For those who decide to see all the beauties of Primorye, it is worth paying attention to the sights of Ussuriysk
- natural and man-made. Such landscape features, rare representatives of flora and fauna, and original monuments cannot be seen anywhere else!
Sights of Ussuriysk: natural wonders
Having arrived in the city and wanting to enjoy a full-fledged journey through the local outskirts, do not deprive your attention of the miracle created by nature and protected by man - the Komarov Nature Reserve. Harmony and bliss reign here, life flows slowly and measuredly, and meeting the inhabitants of the reserve - gorals, roe deer, squirrels, Ussuri tigers, deer and leopards - is breathtaking! The peaks of the southern ranges of the Prezhival Mountains rise high, mountain streams and rapid waterfalls flow down them, and the mighty forests with broad-leaved flora are enchanting.
Human creations: solidity and monumentality
In the city you can admire the man-made sights of Ussuriysk
- both ancient mansions and buildings, and modern monuments - a tribute to innovation and the transience of time.
The buildings of historical houses on the “New Arbat” - the ancient part of the city - deserve attention. Not far away is the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which everyone will like with its ideal proportions, chiseled lines, harmony and unity of composition, as well as a pleasant golden hue. The traveler will be attracted by the theater and circus buildings, created in tandem of classic and modern styles, Dora Park and the Green Island Park, the landscaped areas of which are mini-travels through the endless expanses of Primorye.
No one will be able to pass by the huge stone turtle - a medieval monument dating back to the 12th century. Such turtles once decorated the imperial palaces of the Jin dynasty. In a word, in Ussuriysk there is something to occupy your free time, something to be surprised at, and something to spend part of your trip around the Primorsky Territory on!
How to navigate
The small city has a well-developed transport system. And although most of the sights can be easily seen with a leisurely walk, if you need to travel long distances, this can easily be done on one of the 20 city routes connecting all the microdistricts. There are also many minibuses traveling around the city.
Public transport is represented by an extensive taxi fleet. The average cost of a trip around the city is only 100-150 rubles.
Intercity flights from the bus station connect the city with all nearby settlements. There are also international regular buses to the nearest Chinese province.
The sights of cozy green Ussuriysk give visiting tourists a pleasant impression of a quiet provincial town in the outback of Russia, where you can immerse yourself in the original atmosphere of antiquity and leisurely life, enjoying unusual views and magnificent nature.
Sights of Ussuriysk
You will need several days to explore the interesting places of Ussuriysk. It is most convenient to allocate part of your vacation to a trip to Primorye. You can enjoy the beauty of nature and leisurely explore the numerous museums and monuments.
Start your walk around the city from its historical center. The townspeople call it “New Arbat.” There are buildings from the late 19th – early 20th centuries with bas-reliefs and arches. The majestic cathedral, built in 1907, attracts attention.
Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The cathedral was built in the traditional Russian style. After the revolution, religious services were banned, a pioneer camp and then a warehouse were set up in the premises. In 1946, the church community managed to return the temple.
Old photographs show an arch-chapel built in honor of the arrival of Tsarevich Nicholas to the city. Unfortunately, the chapel has not survived to this day. Only the icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker remains. Now it is in the cathedral.

Review
Ussuriysk is the second largest and most important city in Primorye. In terms of all-Russian popularity, it is much inferior to Vladivostok, but Ussuri patriots believe that their city has more rights to the title of capital of the region. First of all, because Ussuriysk is the main land transport hub of the region. All communications of Primorye and roads from the ports inland pass through it: the branch connecting the CER with the Trans-Siberian Railway, and highways to Vladivostok, Khabarovsk and the village of Pogranichnoye, that is, to China. When the grandiose Primorsky railway port is built - a system of terminals through which sea cargo from Asia will be transported by land to the European part of the mainland - Ussuriysk will compete with Vladivostok for the title of “sea gate of Russia”.
Neighborhood with China influences life in Ussuriysk just as much as in Blagoveshchensk: the nearest Chinese city can be reached in a few hours by bus or train. For locals, bordering Suifenhe is simply “Sunka”, where they regularly go for shopping. In Ussuriysk itself there is a huge Chinese clothing market, the largest in Primorye. You can buy everything there, even at night (they say that the night market is cheaper and more crowded), and at the same time gawk at everyone’s favorite signs “with a Chinese accent.” Another famous place is the Japanese car market under the informal name “Zhelezka”. It beats the same one in Vladivostok in terms of prices: in Ussuriysk they are lower.
Despite the economic activity, the city seems quiet, calm and quite comfortable. There are no skyscrapers here; the tallest building is still a Soviet nine-story building. Ussuriysk has a long history and several completely different lives. The date of his birth is considered to be 1866, when the village of Nikolskoye was founded here by settlers from central Russia. However, back in the 12th century, the city of Suiping, part of the Jurchen state, stood on this site, and even earlier this territory was owned by the medieval Far Eastern Bohai Empire. What remains from Suipin are the sites of two fortresses and the most famous historical monument of Ussuriysk - a stone turtle from the grave of one of the commanders, a symbol of longevity. The turtle was found at the end of the 19th century on the territory of the city park, where today it occupies a place of honor on a hill under a stylized canopy.
The parade of unusual Ussuri monuments continues with perhaps the most famous city monument - the El-629 steam locomotive, installed in the park on Blucher Avenue. This is an ominous monument: it is believed that in its firebox - or in the firebox of the same locomotive - the Japanese burned the legendary Sergei Lazo. True, experts dispute the authenticity of the locomotive or its copy.
The Chumak Park, where the ominous steam locomotive stands, the city park with the turtle (it is also called DORA Park, we don’t know why) and the Green Island Park are favorite vacation spots for Ussuri residents. There is a lot of greenery in the city, but if you want Far Eastern plant exoticism, go to the Lotus Lake in the village of Oak Key, within the city. In August it is covered with pink flowers. Or to the suburban reserve named after Komarov - a mysterious forest on the slopes of the Przhevalsky Mountains, where cedars, elms, black fir and ginseng grow, where Amur tigers live. Nearby is the Astrophysical Observatory, founded in the 1950s as the “Sun Service Station.”
The historical center of Ussuriysk is the “old town” in the area of Kalinin and Chicherin streets. Irkutsk “antiquity”, if you do not take into account the 12th century turtle, is the beginning of the 20th century, when the village of Nikolskoye, thanks to the Trans-Siberian Railway, grew to the city of Nikolsk-Ussuriysky. The most beautiful houses of Ussuriysk also belong to this era: the building of a real school built in 1906 (today it houses school No. 11), the building of a trade school (modern post office), the former shopping arcade “Kunst and Alberts”, in which the Boulevard cafe is now open ", People's House of 1907 - now the Ussuri Drama Theater. The last mansion was built by the Pyankov merchant brothers, very famous entrepreneurs and philanthropists in the Far East.
Ussuriysk owes one of its symbols to the elder Pyankov - Mikhail Pavlinovich came up with the “Ussuri Balsam” based on taiga herbs and berries. The Pyankov distillery regularly produces it to this day, already under the name. It’s easy to find products, brand stores and the factory building itself: the balm’s logo is another symbol of Ussuriysk - the Amur tiger. A tiger's face is painted on the label, a sculpture of a tiger stands in front of the entrance, and life-size puppets in tiger costumes advertise the plant.
Weather, best time to travel
The weather conditions of the city are greatly influenced by the Pacific monsoons and the Sea of Japan. The climate is characterized by rainy, warm summers and very frosty winters. Sometimes the temperature briefly drops below -40 °C. Spring is long, late and windy.
Frosts stop in mid-May. Clear, warm weather occurs during the weakening of the monsoons in early autumn. September is the most pleasant month, it is also called the Far Eastern summer. Frosts begin at the beginning of October. The air is characterized by high humidity, and prolonged downpours cause some discomfort, but in general the weather is quite favorable.
Local features
Ussuriysk, as already mentioned, is located very close to the state border with China. You can travel to China from here without a visa if you are a Russian citizen. More precisely, a visa will be issued upon arrival. A regular bus service has been organized between Ussuriysk and the nearest Chinese cities of Suifenhe and Mudanjiang. You can also go by train. All travel and transport companies in the city organize trips; there are tours for every taste. For those who are in a hurry, there is a plane from Vladivostok, but the difference in price is serious: an overland road will cost about a thousand rubles, an air flight - from 6 thousand.
Climate
The climate in these places is monsoon. Winters are usually cold and clear, summers are warm and humid. Maximum precipitation occurs in July and August. But autumn is warm, mostly with clear weather. The average temperature in September is +15. +17°C. Autumn is the best time to visit Ussuriysk.
Events and holidays
The beginning of September is City Day.
The end of September - Tiger Day is celebrated in Ussuriysk, as well as throughout the Primorsky Territory.
What to bring from Ussuriysk
The main souvenir is the legendary “Ussuri Balsam” - a strong alcoholic drink to which berries, orange peel and Far Eastern medicinal herbs are added. In Ussuriysk you will buy real balsam plus liqueurs and tinctures of various types produced by the same plant founded by the Pyankov merchants, including in souvenir format. There is a company store at the plant on Krasnoznamenaya Street.
Appearance of buildings
Ussuriysk is a developed city with good infrastructure.
The appearance of the settlement itself has changed a lot since the end of the last century. Increasingly, people are resorting to design solutions when building a house or apartment. Instead of faded "Khrushchev" buildings, beautiful one- or two-story cottages have sprung up in many areas. Of course, this greatly affects real estate prices.
Despite the fact that the city is large, there is no real division into districts in Ussuriysk. Instead, residents are guided by the main roads, after which the surrounding areas are named. An example is Leningradskaya, Pushkina, Nekrasova and Oktyabrskaya streets, which are called Center, or Slobodka, located near the railway tracks.
Story
In 698, the ancestors of the modern peoples of the Far East created the first state of Bohai on the territory of modern Primorye. In the place where Ussuriysk now stands, the center of the Shuaibin settlement was located, which was famous for the horses bred here. In 926, Bohai was conquered by the nomadic tribes of the Liao state and ceased to exist.
The first Russian settlements appeared in Primorye in the 17th century, when detachments of Cossacks from Yakutsk led by Vladimir Atlasov and then Erofei Khabarov came to the shores of the Pacific Ocean and to the Amur River valley.
Manchuria did not like the Russian presence in Primorye and the Amur region, and a special corps was sent to the Amur, which began a siege of Russian fortresses. Resistance did not help, and the positions had to be surrendered.
The lands were returned to the Russian Empire only in the middle of the 19th century, when the Aigun (1858) and Beijing (1860) treaties were concluded. At the same time, active development of the Primorsky Territory began.
In 1866, immigrants from the Astrakhan and Voronezh provinces founded the village of Nikolskoye (present-day Ussuriysk). In 1880, the first permanent road to Vladivostok was built.
In 1891, along with the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway, rapid industrial development and population growth began. In 1895, peasants and people of the trading class from the village of Nikolskoye petitioned to transform the village into a city. In April 1898, Nikolskoye received city status and became known as Nikolskoye. It is interesting that contemporaries describe Nikolsk as looking like a large village or a typical rich Little Russian village. The rectangular “stanitsa” layout is still noticeable today.

In 1926, the prefix “Ussuriysky” was added to the name to distinguish it from Nikolsk in the Vologda region.
After the revolution, in 1937, Nikolsk-Ussuriysky received a new name in honor of People's Commissar Voroshilov.
In August 1954, the city of Voroshilov won the All-Russian Socialist Landscaping Competition. In 1957 the city was renamed back to Ussuriysk.
Lake with lotuses
The number one natural attraction of Ussuriysk is the so-called Lotus Lake. It is located 20 kilometers from the city, near the village of Dubovy Klyuch. Tourists come here from all over the Primorsky Territory to see with their own eyes the extraordinary beauty of this reservoir. It is especially crowded here in mid-August, when the lotus blooms and part of the lake is covered with a carpet of soft pink flowers.

Stone turtle
Without a doubt, the most famous landmark of Ussuriysk is a stone sculpture in the form of a sea turtle, dating back to the 12th century. Soviet scientist Vitaly Larichev found out that this sculpture once adorned the tomb of the Jurchen commander Esykuy, who died in 1148. In medieval China, the turtle was a symbol of longevity and meant that a person belonged to a noble family. The monument is located in the central park of Ussuriysk.

No, you read everything correctly: city residents consider Chinese dishes and the places where they are prepared to be the most important attraction of Ussuriysk. According to the majority of respondents, if guests who came from afar did not try meat in sweet and sour sauce, pork on a roasting pan or squid in breadcrumbs, they could be said to have passed by Ussuriysk without ever knowing the philosophy of the local population. In Ussuriysk, you can find both budget cafes on the territory of the Chinese market and restaurants specializing in Pan-Asian cuisine.

Cafes and restaurants
There are many cafes and restaurants in Ussuriysk where you can eat well. But not all of them are tasty and at an adequate price. Here are a few options that will leave you full and with a full wallet after visiting.
- Cafe Terrazzo. My friends and I order pizza there for dinner. They cook it so deliciously that we eat it right away and order a second one. There are burgers in the cafe, and they are delicious. But one copy costs four hundred rubles or more. So draw your own conclusion. Although the cafe is expensive, the food is delicious.
- Burger king and KFS. Typical fast food chain. As always: fast, tasty and cheap.
- Coffee shop Cream. Weak light and soft music create a pleasant lamp atmosphere in it. I recommend it to all freelancers and lovers of delicious coffee.
- Canteen in 34 Trust and cafe "Kopeyka". I recommend it to those who need to save on food. Lunch at 34 Construction Trust - 400 rubles per person. In the Kopeyka cafe 180 rubles.
- Cafe Boulevard. I especially want to highlight it. It has excellent Russian cuisine and an unusual home style, as well as pleasantly low prices. I love visiting it with friends to celebrate parties and birthdays.
I myself visit these places many times. Therefore, I recommend that you do the same.
Ussuri temples
It is impossible to imagine the rating of interesting places in Ussuriysk without religious buildings. There are not too many churches here, but each of them is remarkable in its own way.
Church of the Intercession
The oldest church in the city, consecrated in the fall of 1914, was built on the site of the first church of the then Nikolsky, which had existed since 1871. For forty years, the wooden structure had fallen into disrepair and needed replacement. The new building was erected from stone in an eclectic style, characteristic of Russian religious architecture of the late 19th century. During the Soviet era, the temple was subjected to repression. It was closed and converted first into a pioneer camp building, and then into a warehouse. Only in the summer of 1946 did the authorities return the building, which was already in a deplorable state, to the diocese. By the way, Japanese prisoners of war took part in the restoration of the church. Today, the architectural monument, which recently celebrated its centenary, is one of the iconic sights of Ussuriysk.
St. Nicholas Church
Once upon a time, the majestic St. Nicholas Cathedral, whose gilded cross cut 51 meters into the sky, was considered the main decoration of Ussuriysk. However, the atheist Bolsheviks did not spare the old regime architectural monument. A terrible explosion that thundered over the city on a May day in 1934 destroyed the building to the ground. The parishioners had to wait more than 70 years for the restoration of historical justice. The year 2009 was marked by a joyful event for them. Then the ceremony of consecrating the new St. Nicholas Church on Komarova Street took place. Of course, the white stone church is smaller in size than its predecessor and bears little resemblance to it in appearance. But this does not detract from the joy of the Orthodox. Secular tourists, in turn, are happy to take pictures against the backdrop of the temple, in the exterior of which one can discern features characteristic of both the cathedrals of Yaroslavl or Vladimir, and Veliky Novgorod.
Church of Seraphim of Sarov

At the beginning of the new century, Ussuriysk found another temple, consecrated at the end of December 2003 in the name of the great saint of the Russian land, Seraphim of Sarov. Funds for construction were allocated by city organizations and philanthropic patrons. The small and very cozy church immediately attracts the eye. The nature of this magnetism is not difficult to explain
Travelers' attention is attracted by the unusual shape of the bell tower. It's like she's double
In addition, two blue domes rise above the colorful building attached to the main volume. Such an architectural technique is completely uncharacteristic of traditional religious architecture.
So what can you see in one day?
- Emerald Valley. Located a little further from the city. It is a recreation center with buildings similar to the 12-13th century, lakes, souvenir shops and particles from the beginning of human existence. There is a barbecue area, gazebos, and fishing. Usually people go to this place not for two or three hours, but for the whole day. But you can also pop in for a walk and take a photo or two.
- DORA Park. Located near the officers' house. Overall, an ordinary park in which to spend time pleasantly. One of the truly cool attractions is Ermak. The rest are either childish or uninteresting (in my opinion).
I repeat, Ussuriysk is not a resort city. It doesn’t have a bunch of excursions, five-star hotels and interesting attractions. But a person who knows how to relax can do this in Bali and in the village of Ivanovka.

Emerald Valley Park
The location of this attraction of Ussuriysk and its environs is the village of Utesnoye. The park is divided into several zones. Its decoration is a Russian fort with numerous wooden buildings, including a watchtower, peasant and merchant houses, a bathhouse, a forge, a prison and other outbuildings. Inside each building, the life of bygone eras is recreated. In the “Russian” zone of the park you can also see reconstructions of the sanctuaries of coastal peoples and get acquainted with the tools of their traditional crafts.
In addition, visitors can:
- visit a “medieval European fort”, which is used as a site for historical reenactment festivals;
- shoot with ancient weapons (bows, throwing machines and crossbows) in a shooting range, etc.
Park DORA
This vacation spot, beloved by all townspeople, is famous not only for its ancient stone turtle. DORA Park has always been the center of attention of the authorities of Ussuriysk, therefore it is well-groomed and clean. There are many attractions there, so it is always very crowded on weekends. In addition, there are several cafes in DORA Park where you can have a snack and feed little fidgets. There is also a small zoo here, where animals that suffered during the recent flood found shelter.
