Miass is a historical city in Russia, located at the foot of the Ilmen Mountains in the Chelyabinsk region. It is quite popular among tourists thanks to the nearby Lake Turgoyak and the Ilmensky Nature Reserve. Miass has something to offer both for lovers of active recreation (ski slopes) and for guests who want to get acquainted with the history of the city or just have a good time on the shore of a beautiful mountain lake.

Miass historical

Copper and gold

The city arose on the Miass River, after which it was named, in 1773 in the form of a copper smelter. The enterprise was founded by the Tula merchant Lugin, who managed to obtain permission from the Berg College. Construction of the plant went quite well, but once it had to be interrupted due to the outbreak of the Peasant War, which slightly shifted the opening date.

The enterprise successfully developed, smelting copper for household and church needs. In addition, copper coins were minted here for the Yekaterinburg Mint. The development of the plant temporarily stopped at the beginning of the 19th century, when copper production was greatly reduced, and the enterprise itself began to bring only losses.

But after some time, gold nuggets were found in the river valley. Gold mines were formed, thanks to which the plant quickly resumed its activities and became the largest gold mining center in Russia. During the same period, Miass finally turned into a small but quite wealthy settlement.

One of the mines in the vicinity of the city was visited by Emperor Alexander I himself, who managed to find here a gold bar weighing three kilograms. In honor of such a significant event, the mine was named Tsarevo-Alexandrovsky (Leninsky - in Soviet times). Currently, the village of Leninsk and the gold mine are closed.

And in 1891, construction began on the important Trans-Siberian Railway through the city, connecting European Russia with the cities of the Far East. Miass station became one of the most important on this route.

Automobile plant

In 1919 or 1926 (data vary) Miass received the status of a county town. During the Great Patriotic War, defense enterprises were evacuated here from the western regions. As a result, the Miass Automobile Plant was founded here, producing engines and gearboxes, and later full-fledged cars. The first car left the factory gates on July 8, 1944. In honor of this event, the city has a street called 8 July. During the post-war years, the plant turned into one of the largest automobile factories in the country. Its products, the Ural truck, are familiar all over the world. The Ural Automobile Plant is still a city-forming enterprise.

During Soviet times, the city actively developed, acquiring a modern appearance, and its main enterprise operated stably.

In the 80s, the first public transport began to operate in Miass - trolleybuses, which is noteworthy in the late 90s and early 2000s, thanks to cars, it was completely free for all citizens. From this moment on, the city takes on the appearance familiar to modern residents and does not undergo any significant changes.

Wide Maslenitsa in Miass. Photo report.

How did the people of Miass spend the winter? The most striking shots in our chronicle.

The traditional holiday takes place in Mashgorod for the 26th time. The holiday is held by the city Society of Russian Traditional Culture, headed by Konstantin Vasilyevich Bashlykov.

This year Maslenitsa was held in a new location, in the village of Turgoyak, near the pedestrian bridge. From the very beginning of the holiday, people lined the Path of Health: Miass residents walked in families, with children and pets, everyone was in a hurry to spend the winter.

The new site accommodated everyone. Here you could find shopping arcades, enjoy pancakes, and drink hot tea freshly prepared over a fire. There were carousels and trampolines for young guests, and cotton candy and sugar apples were sold. As always, residents were treated to traditional Russian entertainment: arm wrestling, tug-of-war, round dances, taking a snow fortress, ice bath, wall-to-wall, and sack fights. The bravest climbed onto a wooden pole.

Throughout the entire holiday, thanks to the Miass ensembles, Russian folk songs sounded from the main stage, and among the walkers, buffoons were full of dresses, inviting them to games, dances and round dances.

— The custom of saying goodbye to winter existed in ancient times, and Maslenitsa in Mashgorod dates back to 1996. We are creating a national holiday. Nowadays it is customary to celebrate memorable dates simply: the artists sing and dance separately, and the audience stands and watches. The conceptual difference between Maslenitsa and modern holidays is that it is a folk festival, here everyone acts, every participant, it is a general celebration, and this is its fundamental difference. We show rituals: brave daring, children's fun, ethnographic singing that has preserved folk tradition. When such a song sounds, the soul rejoices,” said the organizer of the holiday, chairman of the Society of Russian Traditional Culture, Konstantin Bashlykov.

This year, Maslenitsa in Mashgorod was visited by a delegation of participants in the international Lazarev readings, a folklore ethnographic conference. Scientists and graduate students - residents of the CIS countries and neighboring countries - watched the progress of the holiday with great interest, visually studying Russian rituals and customs.

— It was very interesting for me to come here, I have long dreamed of seeing the Russian Maslenitsa. In our homeland, we also say goodbye to winter; this holiday is called Navruz, celebrated on March 21. According to our traditions, the new year began with Navruz. The holiday is just as beautiful, colorful, rich, there are a lot of games, round dances and singing. If you go deeper into history, our peoples have a lot in common. Navruz dates back to ancient times, when people needed to warm up in the winter cold, and fire saved them. Fire was considered the child of the sun, people bowed to it so that spring would come faster and it would become warmer. They also burned a doll, an image of winter, and a flat cake was a symbol of the sun. They also tied colored rags on trees as a symbol of flowering, jumped over fires, it was believed that fire burned away all sins,” shared his impressions of a participant in the Lazarev readings Usman Karabaev, professor, Doctor of Philosophy, academician of the Turon Academy of Sciences (Tashkent, Uzbekistan).

The farewell to winter ended with a large hot bonfire, on which, after praising and scolding, they burned Maslenitsa.
