The sculpture was installed in 1977, when residents celebrated the anniversary of Rybinsk.

Flooded city of Mologa

Flooded city of Mologa

The city appeared in the 19th century, but when they planned to build the Rybinsk reservoir, it was flooded. All architectural monuments were under water. But, as it turned out, not for long.

Visitors can see the “Russian Atlantis” almost completely. This is due to the fact that the reservoir has become very shallow. The spectacle is interesting and, at the same time, not very pleasant.

Church of St. Alexander Nevsky

Church of St. Alexander Nevsky

The shrine is located not in the city itself, but not far from the village of Makarovo. Construction began in 1913 and ended only in 1919. Until 1930, the temple was used for its intended purpose. Then the church closed, and until 1997 it burned, went bankrupt, and collapsed. After restoration, the church became operational again.

Against the backdrop of the local landscapes, the slender church looks charming. It was built in the pseudo-Russian classical style: high windows in the form of arches, a tent-type bell tower.

Rybinsk

And now it’s time to talk about the tourist areas and streets of Rybinsk, walking along which you can see a significant part of the city’s attractions. I hope that Rybinsk will please travelers with good weather, ideal for walking around the city.

Pushkin street

I suggest starting to get acquainted with the city by walking from the railway station towards the historical center along Pushkin Street. There is something to see here, in addition to the Karyakinsky Park, which was already discussed above.

One of the most notable buildings is house 52, also known as the “house of artists.” An example of wooden architecture, built in 1900.

The old building, located a little further down Pushkin Street, was dismantled, before which sketches were taken from it, according to which the new one was erected. Now it is a residential building.

Another attraction of the street is the Polish Church, which was also discussed earlier. Further along Pushkin Street is the main building of the Rybinsk State Aviation Technical University. The historical, and, in my opinion, the most beautiful building of the University is located nearby, literally a few hundred meters away, its address is Plekhanov Street, building 2.

Arrow

I suggest starting to get acquainted with the historical part of Rybinsk by walking “below” the bridge along the Embankment. Here begins the “Strelka” - a peninsula formed at the confluence of the Cheremukha into the Volga. In the same area there is a museum of the brothers Alfred, the founder of the famous prize, and Ludwig Nobel, who played an important role in the history of the city.

Another attraction of the area, one of the most noticeable and well-preserved buildings in this part, is the former mill of the merchant Kalashnikov.

During the Soviet years, it was nationalized, and until the 70s of the last century, a flour mill was located here. Currently, reconstruction into a hotel is underway. You can view the building at Volzhskaya Embankment, 19.

Another attraction of the area is the active Kazan Church.

Located at Bolshaya Kazanskaya street, building 1.

Behind Cheremukha you can see the elevator building, one of the tallest buildings in the city. At the time of its construction in 1937, the Rybinsk elevator was the largest in Europe.

Down the Volga, also after the mouth of Cheremukha, you can also see the Rybinsk cargo port. By the way, the ancient name of the river sounds like “Cheremkha”. According to one version, the river received this name because it flows through mosses.

Another interesting building that deserves attention is located on the corner of Bolshaya and Srednyaya Kazan streets. Unfortunately, at present, most of the old houses in this part of the city are not in the best condition, if not in disrepair, and these houses are gradually being replaced by modern ones.

Volzhskaya embankment

Here I’ll tell you about the part of the Volzhskaya embankment located “above” the Rybinsky Bridge. Walking along it, you can see a significant part of the city’s attractions.

In addition to the Rybinsky Bridge, the Transfiguration Cathedral, the Museum-Reserve, and the St. Nicholas Chapel, which were already mentioned earlier, many other attractions are located along the embankment. For example, the white building next to the museum once housed the Corn Exchange. It was opened in 1811.

“Higher” along the Volzhskaya embankment there are several monuments that have become landmarks of the city.

For example, the Monument to the Barge Hauler. For a long time, Rybinsk was the last city to which ships could sail up the Volga.

Thanks to this, it developed as a “transshipment point” and became rightfully considered the “capital” of barge haulers. The monument to the barge hauler was erected in 1977, on the occasion of the bicentennial of Rybinsk being awarded the status of “city”.

Monument to Lev Oshinin, a poet, author of the lyrics of the famous songs “Oh, roads, dust and fog...” and “The Volga River Flows,” one of the most famous natives of the city.

The monument was opened in 2003, installed on the observation deck above the Embankment. Among Rybinsk students there is a superstition that if you rub your toes with the shoes of the monument, you will have good luck in the exam.

Further on the Embankment there are several more monuments, including a monument to Rybinsk residents who suffered from radiation disasters, and a monument to internationalists.

A monument to Ushakov was erected between Volzhskaya Embankment and Stoyalaya Street. The famous admiral, who commanded the Black Sea Fleet, was born in the village of Burnakovo, located near Rybinsk. The monument was opened in 1996 to mark the 300th anniversary of the Russian fleet.

On the territory of Vodokanal, at the address Volzhskaya embankment 10, there is a monument to the plumber.

The monument can be seen from the Volzhskaya embankment, if you walk along its part, located further from the Volga than the water canal itself. Strictly speaking, this is no longer an “embankment” in the usual sense. Part of the embankment running between the Volga and the water utility building was opened relatively recently. Previously, it was impossible to walk right through the embankment, and the water utility building had to be walked around along a street located further from the Volga.

“Higher” along the embankment is the “Monument to the Aviator” - a stele with the figure of a worker holding a propeller in his hands.

The 28-meter-high obelisk was opened on May 9, 1967 and is dedicated to a plant that has been producing aircraft engines since 1916 (now NPO Saturn, one of the country's largest aircraft engine factories).

Next to the monument is the “Fire of Glory” memorial complex, dedicated to the Rybinsk residents who died in the Great Patriotic War. Here, on the alley, there is also a monument to Pavel Ivanovich Batov, a participant in the Great Patriotic War, a native of Rybinsk. In 2010, for the 65th anniversary of the Victory, military equipment was installed in the park - an ISU-152 self-propelled artillery mount and an anti-aircraft gun.

“Higher” along the embankment is the Poljot Sports Palace, which houses an ice skating rink and numerous sports sections. Almost immediately after Polet, Volzhskaya Embankment turns into Academician Gubkin Street, at the beginning of which you can see another sports facility, the Saturn Stadium, which can accommodate more than six thousand spectators.

Having passed the alley from the memorial complex, we come out onto Krestovaya Street and Derunov Square, named after the former director of Rybinsk Motors (now NPO Saturn), who made a significant contribution to the development of the plant and the city. In summer there are fountains on the square. Immediately behind it we will see the building of the Rybinsk Aviation College, whose entire history is connected with education.

Since its construction in 1902, the Commercial School has been located here. Next door to it (89 Chkalova Street) is the building of the Social and Cultural Center (SCC), which hosts festivals, conferences, seminars, and film screenings.

Krestovaya street

Next, I suggest returning to the center along Krestovaya, the main street of the historical part of Rybinsk, running parallel to Volzhskaya Embankment. The road will take approximately two kilometers.

Walking along Krestovaya Street to the center, we will see the largest hotel in the city, called “Rybinsk”. Further along the same side of the street there will be a shopping mall, opened on the territory of a former military unit. Opposite it is the Yubileiny department store, which at one time was the largest store in the region. Next to the department store is the building of the Epicenter shopping and entertainment complex and cinema.

Immediately behind Gostiny Dvor, on the same side of Krestovaya, there is the Sretenskaya Church.

House 84 on Krestovaya Street, on the corner with Pushkin Street, is given to the Central City Library; previously the city estate of the merchant Naumov was located here. At the next intersection - Krestovaya with Borodulina Street, we will see the building of the former Zemstvo Government, built in 1875. Currently, the building is used for various city institutions.

In house 72, which stands on the corner of Krestovaya Street with Rumyantsevskaya, for many years there was the largest cinema in the city, called “Central”. Now the building is given over to a shopping center with the same name.

At the intersection of Krestovaya and Stoyalaya streets there is a former courtyard of the Yugskaya Dorofeevaya Hermitage. The desert itself was founded in the 17th century, 20 versts from Rybnaya Sloboda, whose residents later donated land to the desert for a farmstead.

In the 20th century, the Yurga Dorofeeva Hermitage was flooded during the construction of the Rybinsk Reservoir. During the Soviet years, church services in the courtyard were stopped and have not resumed since then. Currently, the buildings of the former farmstead house shops.

At the address Krestovaya, 19 there is a building of a former primary school. Currently, the Centralized Accounting Department of Municipal Educational Institutions is located here.

Another notable building on the street is the House of the Cathedral Parable (Krestovaya, 7). Currently, the house houses the Rybinsk diocese.

Almost opposite the Cathedral is the Rybinsk Drama Theater (Krestovaya St., 17a), a visit to which I recommend including in getting to know the city and its cultural life.

You can find out information about performances and purchase tickets on the official website.

Area between Pushkin and Sovetskaya streets

Another interesting area that I recommend visiting is located between Pushkin and Sovetskaya streets on one side, and Herzen and Karyakinskaya streets on the other.

Before the revolution, in a dilapidated red building opposite the park (Sovetskaya Street, building 2) there was a bank. During the Soviet years, city court sessions were held here, but later the building was abandoned.

Some time ago, plans were voiced to restore and turn the building into a hotel, but this project was never implemented, and the building continues to gradually collapse. The restored building could become a real decoration and bright landmark of the city!

One of the attractions of the area is the Church of the Tolga Icon of the Mother of God (Radishcheva St., 2, on the corner with Sovetskaya Street). In 2007, the building was returned to the Orthodox Old Believer Church, now restoration is actively underway here, and the bell tower has already been restored.

But, unfortunately, here, as in the Strelka area, many buildings are in deplorable condition, many of them are abandoned, gradually collapsing and being replaced by modern ones.

Some buildings were more fortunate in terms of preservation.

For example, in house number one on Karyakinskaya Street (which is a continuation of Sovetskaya) before the revolution there was an almshouse, now there is a city military registration and enlistment office.
