What to see in the city

The first page in many guidebooks to Evpatoria is occupied by embankments. If you come not only to breathe iodized sea air, but also to study the culture of the locality, first go to Karaimskaya Street, in addition to the wonderful cafe, you will see a lot of interesting things. Restored ancient buildings are concentrated here, and each house in itself is an architectural monument. You can leisurely enjoy the manifestation of the creativity of local residents: meet street musicians, dancers, blacksmiths, artists, and also shop in numerous souvenir shops.

Merchant Synagogue

A building with a sad history. Now we can see its restored version. A century and a half ago, the first tiny Jewish church was built here. After several decades, the Crimean community, for whose needs the building was erected, grew significantly and the walls of the building could no longer accommodate all the parishioners. Jewish merchants twice sponsored its reconstruction. Another significant event happened here - Nicholas II himself visited the synagogue. However, later, during the revolution and wars, the sacred corner was used for other purposes and was gradually destroyed. It was decided to restore its original appearance in 2009.

Karaite kenas

This is a shrine to one of the few nationalities on the planet - the Crimean Karaites of the same name. Walk through the arched vineyard in one of the cozy courtyards, see the frescoes with patterns on the marble trim and take a photo by the fountain. Visit the small and large kenasa. But please note that entry to the territory of the sacred place is possible only as part of an excursion group.

Turkish baths

One of them, or rather its ruins, has been preserved at Karaimskaya 43. In the Middle Ages, it was a popular meeting place for long conversations and discussion of the latest news. The male and female parts of the population steamed in separate rooms. The establishment operated until 1987 - until it was completely destroyed and looted, even marble was stolen. The hammam is located on Krasnoarmeyskaya street.

Tekie Dervishes and Gezlev Gate

The first name literally stands for “Muslim monastery of wandering monks.” These spiritual servants never hid in forest thickets or underground caves, like their Christian representatives. They lived in the very center of the city, roamed the earth a lot, treated, instructed, taught and did good. Now the monastery is not active, but everyone can go inside and touch the walls, built more than 4 centuries ago. This is the first religious building built on these lands by the Ottoman conquerors.

Next to Tekie you can see the Gezlev Gate, named in honor of Evpatoria, which once bore this name. This is one of the 5 surviving entrances to the city that survived the Crimean and Russian-Turkish military conflict. The building has three floors - a Tatar coffee shop was installed on the second floor, and a museum of everyday life was installed on the upper tier.

Wine house and tasting room

The wine villa has organized excursions during which you will learn the history of wine production, view the most expensive and ancient bottles, taste the product and be able to buy a 70-year-old aromatic drink.

City embankments

The banks of Gorky and Tereshkova are similar to each other with a cumbersome variety of souvenir shops, tents with various wines and juices, crowds of noisy tourists intertwined with the ringing voices of singers, the clatter of dancers and the melody of musical instruments. On the first of them there is a sculpture personifying Hercules and the Dolphinarium, and on the second - the Juma-Jami Mosque and Christian shrines - the Cathedral of St. Nicholas and the famous St. Elias Church.

Juma-Jami Mosque

This is the main operating Muslim temple of the city, dating back to the 16th century, and has been rebuilt and restored several times. Under communist rule, it was given over to a museum and after the collapse of the union, it was handed over again to the Muslim community.

St. Nicholas Cathedral

The religious building, a 19th-century building, was planned and built in honor of the liberating heroes during the Crimean War. All small national communities donated funds for its construction, and Emperor Alexander III also allocated a significant part. Under the USSR, they wanted to blow up the building, but the official order was never issued.

Armenian Church of St. Nikoghayos

Built on the territory of the former region of Armenia, which occupied the suburb of Gezlev. Construction took place at the beginning of the 19th century. During the Crimean War, the temple served the French garrisons, as can be seen from the messages and names of the military engraved on the walls. During the Soviet period, the premises were used for domestic purposes, then fell into disrepair, became dilapidated and aged; after the collapse of the great power, its global restoration began.

Synagogue of Yeghia-Kapai

The building was built in the 20th century. But it did not serve long as a haven for the Jewish diaspora; with the coming to power of the Communist Party, the religious building was equipped as a stable, and later as a warehouse. In the late 1990s, the walls heard prayers here again.

Temple of St. Elijah

Another building from the 20th century, rising right on the embankment. This is a Greek church, and donations for the construction were collected reluctantly and slowly, so community members turned to municipal authorities for help. Like many other buildings, the beautiful walls, equipped with arches, strewn with pilasters and decorated with stained glass, fell into disrepair during Soviet rule. They began to “reanimate” it already in 2003.

Pharmaceutical Museum "Old Marine Pharmacy"

An interesting place that is recommended to visit in Evpatoria. The exhibition of exhibits is located in the building of a pharmacy from the end of the 19th century, which is still operating today, the owner of which was the pharmacist Rofe. The furnishings and renovation of the premises have survived to this day in almost original form. The museum contains unique items such as apothecary scales, a pill-making apparatus, cones and test tubes.

Entertainment complex "Union"

Bowling club "Union", located in the building of the hotel of the same name, has 4 lanes of the American company AMF. The interior decoration of the hall, complemented by thematic wall frescoes, resembles the top of a mountain. The club will appeal to both beginners and professional bowlers. The first will receive help from instructors, the second will get a great game and a chance to take part in tournaments and competitions. For the convenience of visitors, the hall has a row of soft sofas and a bar with a large selection of dishes and drinks. By the way, next to Union there is an amusement park - an alternative for those who do not like bowling.

In ancient times, it was part of the water surface of the Black Sea, but subsequently the movement of lithospheric plates and the drying of waters, it was separated from it by a sand spit. Now it is a spring, the bottom of which represents the most valuable healing mud, found in the 19th century. At the same time, the first hospital opened here, thanks to which Evpatoria began to be considered a full-fledged health resort.

Lake Sasyk-Sivash

If you move east from the city, you will find a salty pond near the sea, the modern name of which translates as “stinking mud.” The place received such an unpleasant definition in the 15-16th century due to the disgusting amber that filled the areas in dry areas. Salt has been mined here since the prosperity of Chersonesos. A notable feature of this lake is that the water is pink in color due to the algae that live there.

In this terrarium zoo, you can see snakes, pythons, reptiles, monkeys, ponies, various rodents, as well as feed them by hand, take pictures and even buy a pet as a souvenir.

Reviews from vacationers

Inna Ivanova, Omsk, 26 years old, hairdresser. I visit Evpatoria every year with my son. This is the best resort we went to with him. The child is not bored, there is always something to do, and I still have time for myself. I don’t even know which of us likes Evpatoria more.

Roman Pavlov, 36 years old, Komi Republic, engineer. I prefer Yevpatoria for its good beaches and their diversity. It’s not boring to spend time here because you can go to a new place every day. Not every city can boast such an abundance of entertainment. And the children are busy all the time, you can take a break from them.

Evpatoria seems to be specially created for children and family recreation. Almost every hotel, guest house or boarding house thought about little tourists and tried to create for them all the conditions conducive to a comfortable stay. The resort has sanatoriums that are ready to accept a child for treatment. Curious kids can learn something new every day by visiting different establishments.
