Taman: vacation in the Krasnodar region at the junction of two seas

The true pearl of the Taman Peninsula, in the Krasnodar Territory region, is the village of Taman! The place where the Black and Azov seas meet has long attracted people from all over the world. Six centuries BC, Greek sailors founded the city of Hermonassa on the coastal plateau. Centuries later, they were replaced by the Byzantines, then the Khazars, and finally, the Russian principality with the well-known name Tmutarakan erected its capital here, and in 1792 it became the center of the Black Sea Cossacks. Glorified in the famous novel by Lermontov, the village attracts not only with the abundance of monuments of bygone eras. Unique nature, healing climate, gentle sea and amazing beaches still attract lovers of a beautiful wellness holiday.

Where is the village located in the Krasnodar region?

The village is found at its western end, on the coast of the Taman Bay. The nearest large cities are Temryuk (65 km) and Anapa (86 km). It includes two parallel bridges: the road bridge was opened in 2022, the railway bridge became fully operational in 2022. Thanks to the Crimean Bridge, you can easily get from the Taman Peninsula to Crimea. The distance from Taman to the Crimean city of Kerch is only 47 km.

Where to stay for vacation?

When choosing a holiday in Taman, remember that the village itself is small; about 10 thousand people live here permanently. Guests are greeted warmly and are offered a wide range of accommodation, from a comfortable hotel to a modest room in the private sector. All that remains is to decide what you like best. Budget vacationers always try to choose an option without intermediaries.

On the street named after Lieutenant Schmidt, next to Lermontov Park, the Alexandria Hotel is located. Twenty rooms of varying sizes, with balconies and sea views, await guests at any time of the year. Prices vary depending on the season, you need to inquire about them in advance, but a holiday here cannot be called cheap. The hotel was built in 2016, modern renovation and cozy interior create a relaxing homely atmosphere. The rooms have all the amenities; in the fenced area there is parking for personal vehicles, a laundry room, and a cafeteria.

Those who want to feel the cultural heritage of the village will be delighted with the Cossack huts in Dikanka. The amazing complex consists of 13 houses for 2-3 people and one large building in the center that can accommodate up to 5 people. Whitewashed huts with a reed roof and a stove are lined up on a site decorated in the style of an old farm. Stone paths overgrown with grass, a covered well, and wooden swings will delight adults and children. Despite the carefully recreated spirit of antiquity, guests will not be left without modern conveniences. There is a shower, cable TV, a refrigerator, and there are split systems.

Guest house "Orange" looks as juicy and sunny as its name. All rooms are on the ground floor, with a private covered veranda. Guests provide their own meals; they are provided with a microwave oven, a slow cooker, and an electric kettle. Wireless Internet operates throughout the hotel. There is also parking, an outdoor swimming pool, and a common barbecue area. The central beach is less than a kilometer from the gate, and Lermontov Park is just a stone's throw away.

As you can see, Taman can offer the most diverse vacation - it all depends on your preferences, desires and capabilities. But as for Kuban, spending time here can still be called budgetary.

Phanagorian fortress

At the entrance to the village, opposite, there is a historical place, without which it is impossible to imagine the sights of Taman. There was once a small fortress here, founded by Suvorov himself in 1794, which served as a fortification during the war with the Turkish army.

Over 2600 years ago, Greek settlers appeared on the land of the Taman Peninsula and founded the colony of Phanagoria. Over time, the Greeks left, but the name remained. After the fortress was erected in 1794 by order of A.V. Suvorov, it was also nicknamed Phanagorian. For half a century it regularly fulfilled its duties, but during the Crimean War it was completely destroyed. Only earthen ramparts and some artifacts have survived to this day. Nowadays, on the territory of the former fortress, the chapel of Fyodor Ushakov has been built, there are busts of commander A.V. Suvorov and Admiral F.F. Ushakov, an 18th-century cannon of Russian casting with a set of cannonballs for it.

Fortunately, it is located in the central part of the village, in the middle of a beautiful park, also named after the great Russian writer. It consists of two Cossack huts, lovingly recreated to preserve the flavor of the century before last. Simple everyday objects make up the exhibition along with literary monuments collected bit by bit, such as the poet’s personal letters and rare ancient editions of his works.

Having reached the outskirts, be sure to explore the ethnographic museum complex “Ataman” . Behind the wicker fence, a journey back in time begins. Hermonassa

The modern village of Taman dates back to 1792, but the history of the settlement that existed here goes back centuries. Back in 592 BC (before the 1st year according to the Julian and Gregorian calendars, before the Nativity of Christ), the city of Hermonassa was founded on this territory by the ancient Greeks. Where this name came from is now almost impossible to establish. According to the ancient Greek historian and geographer Flavius Arrian, the Aeolian Greeks led by Samander took part in the founding of the city. The city was named in honor of his wife Hermonassa. I repeat, this is one of the versions. At that time, the settlement had every right to be called a city. Now scientists are conducting excavations and research here. During the investigation, it was established that the buildings of the city were stone, one and two-story. On top they were covered with tiles or damask (dry algae). The houses had ovens and granaries. Cups, bowls and other utensils were found, as well as painted vases dating back to the 6th century BC. Just imagine, all this happened two thousand six hundred years before us. There was no Moscow, no Novgorod, no Kyiv, no other cities, but the city of Hermonassa was already living its own life. Feel the time scale.

Bread and sea

Just as many millennia ago, today one of the main occupations of people remains obtaining their “daily bread.” Were the inhabitants of Hermonassa engaged in the cultivation of grain crops at that time? Now you can’t determine this for sure. During excavations in the houses, granaries with the remains of wheat were discovered. It is quite possible that they grew bread on the land and fished in the sea. This is a wonderful and respectable line of work. In the photo above you can see the Taman field after the harvest, stretching towards the horizon, where the dark blue sea stretches out. Not everywhere you can see such an interesting landscape, conveying the meaning of serving people with two different elements of our planet - earth and water.

Where to eat deliciously in Taman?

Numerous rave reviews confirm: the Hermonassa cafe is the best in Taman; a holiday there will not be forgotten for a long time. A snow-white building with verandas and a spacious terrace stands in the middle of the Lermontov square. The light, airy interior will create a pleasant summer mood. The dishes here are always fresh, very tasty, and the menu selection is wide. The spacious hall is perfect for holding celebrations with a large number of guests; not only holidaymakers, but also locals often come here.

The cafe-dining room “Home Kitchen” will pleasantly surprise you with its prices. Here you can taste Russian and Uzbek dishes from a custom menu. The convenient location in the center of the village guarantees that no one will go hungry during the walk. For those who don’t like to get out of the water for a long time, the “Prichal” cafeteria on the Embankment is the best choice. Under a wide wooden canopy you can cool off in the shade and at the same time have a snack with salad, fruit, barbecue or crispy fresh fish.

Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Address: village Taman, lane. Kalinina, 1.

Sights of Taman include the Orthodox monument of the village - the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built at the end of the 18th century. At one time it was visited by outstanding people: poets A.S. Pushkin and M.Yu. Lermontov, military leader Suvorov and many others.

The design feature of the temple is interesting. Despite the fact that it was built in a classical style, it turned out to look a little like a ship sailing to the Kingdom of Heaven. By the way, this is the very first Orthodox church built by the Cossacks on the Taman Peninsula. In 1855, during the Crimean War, it was almost completely destroyed. Only in 1911 the building was restored to its original form, and since then the temple has not stopped its activities. In the 1990s, it was restored, and a decade later, new bells were installed on the belfry, the largest of which weighs 350 kilograms.

Cossack Museum

The Cossack Museum, the exhibition of which is dedicated to the culture and life of the Cossacks of the Taman Peninsula, appeared thanks to the efforts of the concerned residents of the village of Taman. A significant number of artifacts from past years related to the military and civil life of the Cossacks one and a half to two centuries ago have been collected here.

The museum itself was organized with the help of local residents: Cossack ataman V.I. Bystrov and his wife, who now serves as its director. They chose an old estate built in 1913 as the museum building. The exhibits include bladed weapons and firearms of the Cossacks of that period, Cossack uniforms from the 19th – early 20th centuries, horse harnesses, royal coins and photographs. All this is collected in relatively three rooms of the building. Some of the exhibit items were purchased by the Bystrovs at their own expense, and some were received as gifts from village residents.

Name Features

The famous linguist and linguist Max Vasmer believed that the name “Taman” comes from the proper name of the Old Russian, which takes its roots from the concept of “a certain rank” (taman, a word in the ancient Turkic dialect). There is another version of the etymology of this word, according to which the designation “Taman” comes from the Adyghe word “swamp” (“temen”). It is possible that the name came from the Kabardian word, which means “lake”. Another translation is “sole” (“Taman” - in the Turkic dialect).
