Khimki. Sights, photos of the city, what to see in the surrounding area

There are many cities in Russia that owe their appearance to the implementation of large-scale infrastructure projects. These include Khimki, the third most populous city in the Moscow region. It grew out of a small village formed in 1851 at a railway station that connected the capitals of a huge empire stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific coast. Having absorbed several surrounding villages, Khimki, on the wave of socialist industrialization, turned into an important industrial center of the region, and in 1937, after the commissioning of the Moscow Canal and the opening of the Northern Port, it acquired the status of a city. The significant event of the Second World War is associated with the name of the policy. It was here that the Wehrmacht units, bloodless in the battles and rushing towards the capital, were forced to stop. According to official data, Khimki became the closest settlement in the vicinity of Moscow that Guderian's tank columns managed to reach. In the post-war period, the city developed and grew, becoming, in the last third of the last century, an important point on the industrial map of the Moscow region. Today it has every reason to be proud not only of the enterprises of the military-industrial complex or the rocket and space industry, but also of its developed infrastructure, educational institutions, and architectural and historical monuments.

Where is

Khimki is located 20 km from the capital. City coordinates 55°53′49″ N, 37°25′46″ E. Getting there from Moscow is not difficult.

The first train leaves at 00:38, the last at 23:50. Trains run at intervals of 5-20 minutes. There are several electric trains of the “Lastochka” class of increased comfort on the route. Weather, best time to travel

The optimal weather for walking outdoors in the Moscow region begins in late spring and continues throughout the summer. From June to September the air temperature is +21-24 °C. But in June and September, up to 48-50 mm of precipitation falls monthly, and inclement weather can last for 2 weeks in a row.

The largest number of sunny days is recorded in May, July and August; clear weather is observed on 20-23 days. The long winter begins with frosts in early November and lasts until the end of March. Average winter temperatures are -10°C. The sun rarely appears from behind the clouds, but it doesn’t rain often either.

Religious buildings

Khimki, the sights of which we decided to explore, is proud of its churches. There are about 20 objects in the city.

Temple of Cyril and Methodius

The temple in the Levoberezhny microdistrict (Bibliotechnaya St., 1) was built 15 years ago and attracts attention with its original architectural design.

The log church was created in the style of ancient Russian architecture of the pre-Mongol period. The current temple is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Church of Peter and Paul

At Leninsky Prospekt, 31, there is one of the oldest churches. It has been known since the 17th century. Over the years, the wooden structure deteriorated, and the owners of the estate where the temple was located decided to build a stone church. In 1829, the temple in a new form was consecrated.

After the revolution, the church was closed, housing soap workshops and then a foundry. The fresco painting was lost, the dome collapsed after a fire.

The building was returned to the parishioners in the early 2000s, and restoration was carried out. Now the Peter and Paul Church contains particles of the relics of Matrona of Moscow, Sergius of Radonezh, and the skufia of St. Mitrofan. The temple is active and open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Church of Cosmas and Damian

Located in a picturesque location on the banks of the Khimka River, at the entrance to the city. The wooden structure in the village of Kosmodemyanskoye has been known since the end of the 16th century. A hundred years later, the building was destroyed in a fire, and the owner of the estate, Count Zotov, erected the Church of the Holy Unmercenaries in stone.

Khimki. Sights: Church of Cosmas and Damian.

In the 30s of the XX century. The temple was closed, a club was set up in the premises, then repair shops, and later a printing house. The destruction almost did not affect the Kosmodamian Church, only the crosses were removed from the domes. Now the functioning temple, made in the classical style, is an architectural monument. It is located on the street. Pravoberezhnaya, 6, and is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Church of Saint Uar of Egypt

Another interesting religious object is located on Mashkinskoye Shosse, 1A, at the entrance to the city cemetery. The church was built in 2004. The architects combined in its appearance the features of the Vladimir-Suzdal and North Russian styles: the entrance portal is decorated with carvings, the cornices are decorated with gilded elements. The belfry is designed in the traditions of ancient Pskov. The temple is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Main attractions of Khimki: TOP-5

The sights of Khimki, photos and descriptions of which are contained in the article, attract many tourists to the city. Some of the listed cultural, historical or natural monuments are considered the calling cards of the city.

Memorial composition "Jerzy"

  • Address: Leningradskoe highway. Transport stop "Monument".

The massive monument is a reminder to descendants of one of the most significant events of the Second World War and is rightfully considered the hallmark of Khimki near Moscow. As is known, in the vicinity of the city, mechanized columns of the Wehrmacht were stopped in 1941, coming here to a minimum distance from the capital. Soon after this, the famous offensive operation began, which marked the beginning of the liberation of the USSR from the hordes of invaders and the destruction of German fascism in general. The monument, inaugurated in 1966, is grandiose. The height of the reinforced concrete hedgehogs, a giant copy of a very effective means of fighting tanks, actively used by the Red Army in the initial period of the war, is almost 6 m. The place for installing the monument, illuminated by spotlights at night, was not chosen by chance. Not a single fascist soldier could overcome the “Khimki hedgehogs” line.

"White pillars"

  • Address: st. Pravoberezhnaya, 6A. Transport stop "Hospital".

The TOP of the main architectural attractions of Khimki includes an ancient estate, built at the beginning of the last century, which now shelters the city hospital under its roof. The main building of the estate, which belonged to the merchant S. Patrikeev in the last pre-revolutionary decades, is very colorful. With its towers and powerful walls, it is more reminiscent of a medieval French castle, rather than a merchant mansion, typical of central Russia. The estate got its name from the massive white pillars that once stood at the main entrance to the estate. Architectural delights have long since sunk into oblivion, but the everyday name of the historical building has been assigned forever. There are a lot of interesting things connected with “White Pillars”. Some literary scholars, for example, consider the Patrikeev estate to be the prototype of the hospital described by M. Bulgakov in the immortal novel “The Master and Margarita.” By the way, the buildings of the estate actually housed a psychiatric hospital for some time. And here the leader of the world proletariat underwent treatment.

Skhodnenskaya Bowl

  • Address: floodplain of the Skhodnya River. Transport stop "Kindergarten".

The main miraculous landmark of the outskirts of Khimki, as well as the capital’s Northern Tushino, is located just outside the Moscow Ring Road, just 6 km from the city center. Here, among the swampy floodplain of the Skhodnya River, Her Majesty Nature created an amazing masterpiece, reminiscent of an antique amphitheater in outline. Under the influence of landslides, the banks retreated and formed a horseshoe-shaped barrier around the water surface, reaching a height of 40 m in places. The recreation area is home to many species of common and waterfowl representatives of the bird family. Nightingales, buntings, moorhens, and bluethroats nest in the willow thickets. The marshy areas of the Chalice or Tushinsky Bucket are inhabited by rare sharp-faced frogs, newts, lizards, and snakes. The mammal family is represented mainly by rodents and weasels. The Skhodnenskaya bowl is very picturesque. On its banks grow maples, willows, birches, oaks, and several types of shrubs.

Peter and Paul Church

  • Telephone.
  • Website: https://www.khimkihram.ru
  • Address: Leninsky Prospekt, 31. Transport stop "Rodina Stadium".

The temple, consecrated in 1829 in the name of Peter and Paul, was built on the site of an earlier religious building that had existed since the last third of the 17th century. Over time, the wooden building began to deteriorate and the owners of the Apukhtin estate decided to build a new church instead, now made of stone. On the eve of the Second World War, the temple was abolished by decision of the authorities. Its premises housed first a soap factory and then a foundry. At that time, the magnificent painting of the walls and vaults was lost, and the dome of the main portal collapsed due to a fire. In 2004, the church was returned to the parishioners, after which large-scale restoration work began. Today the building has been completely restored. Its interiors are once again decorated with beautiful frescoes. The main temple relics are considered to be the skufia of St. Mitrofan, particles of the relics of Sergius of Radonezh and Matrona of Moscow.

In 1833, a temple was built on the estate. During the Great Patriotic War, all valuables, household items and furniture were lost. In the post-war years, a school and a kindergarten were located on the premises of Bratsevo. Then a rest house was opened here, which exists to this day.

Estate "White Pillars"

An architectural monument of the 20th century in the city of Khimki is the White Pillars Estate. In 1905, merchant S.P. became its owner. Patrikeev. He built a large manor house on its territory, which in appearance resembled a castle.

The architect F.O. worked on the creation of the project. Shekhtel. The estate got its name thanks to the large white pillars that were installed at the entrance to the estate. Unfortunately, they have not survived to this day.

After the death of the owner, the estate became the property of local authorities. In 1918, a sanatorium was opened in the building of the former manor house to treat people with tuberculosis, then it was turned into a psychiatric hospital, but it did not work for long. Currently, these premises are occupied by City Hospital No. 1.

Church of the Epiphany

On the initiative of local residents, a new temple was built in the city, which was consecrated in honor of the Epiphany of the Lord (Epiphany Church). The internal space is divided into two floors, the lower one is made specifically for the sacrament of baptism.

On the territory of the temple there are administrative buildings, a small church shop and a chapel in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow.” It is dedicated to all those who died in local wars, the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and others.

Monuments and Monuments

Khimki, whose attractions attract tourists to the city, is of particular interest as the place where fascist troops heading towards the capital were stopped in 1941. There are many monuments in the city associated with those tragic years.

"Anti-tank hedgehogs"

At the 23rd km of the Leningradskoye Highway, a massive monument is visible from afar - a copy of the famous anti-tank “hedgehogs” that were installed in the vicinity of Khimki during the Great Patriotic War in case of a fascist breakthrough. The 6 m high monument looks grandiose and is illuminated in the evening.

Square named after M. Rubtsova

In the park there is an open-air exhibition of military equipment and several memorial monuments:

  • “Sister of Mercy” - the monument is made in the form of a woman holding a wounded man on her knees;

  • “Heroes of Undeclared Wars” - dedicated to special forces soldiers who died in local wars; the names of 2,000 soldiers are written on the column;
  • the La-7 aircraft reminds of the selfless feat of home front workers;
  • monument to the liquidators of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant;
  • busts of heroes of the Great Patriotic War;
  • sign "I love Khimki".

Memorial

On Victory Square there is a memorial dedicated to the residents of Khimki who died during the war. The monument was opened in 2015 and consists of black marble slabs on which the names of 2,500 residents of the city are written in gold. Opposite, across the square, there is an obelisk “To those who defended the Fatherland.”

Monuments

Many monuments remind us that the culture and history of Khimki is inextricably linked with the history of the country.

The following monuments are worth visiting:

  • L.N. Tolstoy in the park of culture and recreation, which bears the name of the writer;
  • Z. Kosmodemyanskaya (at the intersection of Spartakovskaya and Kosmodemyanskaya streets);
  • V. Chkalov (at the intersection of Chkalov Street and Leninsky Prospekt);

  • on the street Moskovskaya, 15, monument to Saints Peter and Fevronia;
  • in the left bank part of the city near the Moscow Ring Road there is a monument to St. Andrew the First-Called.

Seven “uniqueities” of the city of Khimki

2. In 1941, a counteroffensive began in the battle of Moscow on the territory of the city of Khimki.

And apparently, it was here that the Germans came closest to Moscow (reliably, and not according to legends about motorcyclists who reached Sokol) (more details)

3. The main airport of the Soviet Union and Russia is located in Khimki

(more details). Every time I see a “welcome to Pushkin’s homeland” poster at Sheremetyevo, I think that Pushkin was not born in Khimki after all :))

4. In Khimki, at the Lavochkin Design Bureau, domestic spacecraft were born, the ones that flew farthest from the Earth

into boundless space, as well as the famous Lunokhod (more details).

I can’t help but mention Georgy Nikolaevich Babakin, under whose leadership the lunar rover and other best achievements of domestic unmanned astronautics were created at the Lavochkin Design Bureau. It seems to me that his name, little known to many, deserves to be remembered on the same level as Korolev. Like Korolev, he died extremely early (even younger than Korolev), giving himself entirely to space. As after Korolev, achievements in astronautics became much worse after his death (on the issue of the role of the individual).

5. Continuing the space theme: in Khimki there is the most successful space industry enterprise in terms of export in modern Russia

. Until recently (I don’t know how the situation changed with the appearance of Elon Musk in the space industry), every third launch vehicle in the world was launched on engines developed and produced by NPO Energomash named after V.P. Glushko. Despite all the difficulties in US relations, Energomashevsky engines launched American vehicles into orbit to explore Mars, Jupiter, and Pluto. (more details)

6. An event took place in Khimki that can be considered a symbol of the onset of the era of post-Soviet consumption: in 2000, the first IKEA store in Russia

. It is located next to the Jerzy monument (see point 2), thereby serving as the basis for the meme “during the war the Germans reached IKEA.” You may laugh, but I don’t have a single photo of IKEA, so let it be its “neighbor” and constant companion MEGA

Architectural structures

Walking along the streets, you can see a lot of interesting things. Khimki attracts attention with its combination of ancient and modern.

"White pillars"

An ancient estate called “White Pillars” on the street. Pravoberezhnaya, 6A, is one of the architectural monuments. In the 20th century The estate was built by the merchant S. N. Patrikeev, who chose the appearance of a medieval French castle for the house. Architect Shekhtel decorated the entrance to the estate with white columns, which gave the name to the house.

The columns have not survived, but the house is also attractive for its myths. It is believed that the leader of the revolution, V.I. Lenin, was treated here. Then a psychiatric hospital was opened in the estate, and some literary scholars associate it with M. Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita.”

Bridge

Tourists enjoy taking photographs against the backdrop of the city’s iconic landmark, the Khimki Bridge. It is convenient to view it from the Levoberezhnaya platform.

The bridge, almost 30 m high, stretches 106 m above the canal. Moscow. It was built in the 40s of the XX century, using advanced technologies at that time, it became the prototype of many bridge structures in the country.

Country park

The country park on the shore of Butakovsky Bay personifies modern Khimki. In multi-storey buildings on the street. Panfilova, 21/1 there are offices, exhibition spaces, cafes and restaurants, a yacht club, a club beach, and various services (from a beauty studio to a car wash). There is a great view from the observation deck on the roof.

Northern River Station

The station on the shore of the Khimki Reservoir is an outstanding monument of the Stalinist Empire style. Built in 1933, it became the first object that had not only functional, but also aesthetic significance.

The building is stylized as the Doge's Palace in Venice and is designed in the form of a steamship: three tiers of verandas 150 m long represent the ship's decks, and the central tower 75 m high (with a spire 27 m) is the chimney. The sculptures decorating the façade of the building, as well as the interior of the station, are unique. The station is located at Leningradskoye Shosse, 51.

Khimki Bridge

  • Transport stop "Platform Levoberezhnaya".

Infrastructure structure over the canal named after. Moscow in the South-Eastern part of the city rightfully claims the title of an iconic landmark of Khimki. There are good reasons for this. A relatively small bridge with a length of just over 106 m and a height of 29 m is the prototype of its much more impressive counterparts built in Russia. During its construction in the 40s of the last century, technologies were tested, which were then used by domestic bridge builders for seven decades. The elegant structure is considered an excellent setting for selfies. And also, hypothetically, along the hollow corridors of the arches you can freely move from one bank of the canal to the other. The internal dimensions of reinforced concrete tunnels will not make travel difficult. With a height of 2.8 m, the cavities are 1.2 m wide.

Perhaps the main attraction of Khimki, acquired by the city in modern times, can be considered a chic business one. The recreation area has excellent conditions for businessmen. Three ultra-modern buildings made of glass and concrete provide merchants and industrialists with space for offices, representative offices, exhibition halls, and apartments. The most notable recreational structure is the Country Park 3 building. The height of this tower is 22 floors. The territory of the business center is landscaped. Excellent infrastructure, the presence of recreation areas, cafeterias, and auxiliary facilities - from car washes to dry cleaning - are conducive to successful business. And also, from the windows of the Country Park high-rise buildings there are stunning views of the Khimki Reservoir and the picturesque shores of Butakovsky Bay.

Bratsevo Estate

Just a few kilometers from Khimki, the Bratsevo Park adjoins the MKAD highway, where you can admire the delightful buildings of the estate of the same name, which once belonged to the famous noble families of the Naryshkins, Zubovs, Stroganovs, and Apraksins. The pearl of the architectural and landscape composition of the estate is an elegant palace with Ionic columns, an elegant balustrade, and a colorful belvedere. A masterpiece of Russian architecture of the first third of the 19th century. captivates at first sight. No less impressive is the sophisticated rotunda on the shore of the pond in the north-western part of the manor park.

Square named after M. Rubtsova

  • Address: Leningradskoe highway. Transport stop "Mayakovsky Street".

In a cozy, well-kept public garden, which bears the name of the honorary resident of Khimki and is another source of pride for the townspeople, tourists will see a whole complex of monuments dedicated to the heroes of defunct wars. The most heartfelt of them can be called the “Sister of Mercy” monument. The sculptural composition is dedicated to the great feat of the front-line nurses of the Soviet country, who, like men, endured the hardships and deprivations of the Second World War and saved, often at risk to themselves, the lives of hundreds of thousands of Red Army soldiers.

A little further away there is a monument to the heroes of undeclared wars. We often learn about the unprecedented exploits of special forces soldiers defending the interests of the Motherland in local armed conflicts only after several decades. But the memory of the courage and heroism of the soldiers of the invisible front, who sacrificed themselves for the sake of their comrades or those who were unaware of the mortal threats of their peaceful compatriots, remains in the people's memory forever.

Sights of the city of Khimki (Moscow region)

Immediately behind the Moscow Ring Road is the second largest city in the Moscow region - Khimki (190 thousand inhabitants). The city has the appearance of a typical Moscow residential area, the only difference is that it starts right outside the ring road. The current high-rise buildings in Khimki essentially grew out of a dacha village that developed by the mid-19th century on the banks of the Skhodnya River. At the same time, in 1851, a railway station was opened. But until the Stalin 30s it was a dacha area. Everything changed after the construction of the aircraft plant (NPO Lavochkin), and after the war the city grew against the backdrop of several powerful rocket and space enterprises of all-Union significance - MKB Fakel (anti-aircraft missiles) and NPO Energomash (rocket engines). Directly north of the city is the Khimki Forest (1000 hectares). It can be seen from the road to Sheremetyevo; if you go to the airport, it will be on the right. This is a centuries-old oak forest (pines, spruces, lindens), rich in berries and mushrooms, separating Khimki and Dolgoprudny, which is located on the Savelovskaya branch, and in the recent past was the object of a serious struggle between supporters and opponents of clearing a clearing in it. The Moscow Canal also passes through Khimki.

Everything interesting in Khimki is concentrated along the Leningradskoye Highway and has a commercial focus: the Auchan shopping and food hypermarket and the Obi construction goods store. There is also an IKEA furniture store nearby. Bus No. 481 goes there from the Rechnoy Vokzal metro station, and bus No. 571 from Planernaya. Closer to Moscow there is also Ramstore City with the largest cinema in Europe (Khimki Hospital stop). At the northern exit from Khimki (23rd km of Leningradka) there is a monument “Ezhi”, symbolizing the line closest to Moscow where the Germans managed to reach in the winter of 1941. Also in Khimki there is a football stadium “Arena-Khimki” (2008), which is currently the home stadium of the Dynamo and CSKA clubs (Kirova St., 24, from the Rechnoy Vokzal metro station or minibus No. 345).

Khimki Photos

To the south of Khimki there is the Serednikovo estate, associated with two outstanding people (bus 40 from the Firsanovka platform to the final one). In 1775–1796, the lands belonged to Senator Vsevolod Vsevolozhsky, who created the architectural complex, and in 1825, Major General Dmitry Stolypin, brother of Lermontov’s grandmother, became the owner of the estate. Thanks to this fact, a famous great-nephew named Mikhail spent his summer holidays here in 1829–1832. And a little later, his own grandson, the future Prime Minister of Russia Pyotr Stolypin, grew up in Serednikovo. After the revolution, the estate was repurposed into a sanatorium, which was named “Mtsyri” in honor of Lermontov. Now, at the beginning of the 21st century, the estate is leased to Lermontov’s descendants and is used by them for openly commercial purposes - it is rented out for corporate parties, weddings and other entertainment events. However, you can just come and have a look and take a walk - the estate has been restored, it smells distinctly like a “new build”, there is a pond with two islands, to which a staircase leads.

The northwestern part of Khimki is the former city of Skhodnya (the Podrezkovo platform), as if separating Khimki from Zelenograd, named after the river that flows from Zelenograd and flows into the Moscow River in the Tushino region. It can be used for winter ski holidays. Along the Leningradskoye Highway in the Skhodnya area there is the village of Chernaya Gryaz. In the 19th century, the first postal station from Moscow was built here on the St. Petersburg Highway. There is a museum in the stationmaster's two-story house. The house saw Radishchev, Pushkin, Gogol and many other famous travelers of that time (buses No. 350, 400 from the Rechnoy Vokzal metro station, Cherkizovo stop). In addition, in 2010, the village of Chernaya Gryaz became notorious for the nightly deployment of sex workers. Previously, they occupied the entire space of the Leningradskoye Highway from the Moscow Ring Road to the turn to Sheremetyevo. Further along the Leningradskoe highway and the railway is Zelenograd.

When you find yourself in an unfamiliar country, an unfamiliar city, you want to see all the sights and visit interesting places during the trip. If your choice fell on one of the largest cities in the Moscow region - Khimki, then rest assured, there is something to see and visit there.

The Khimki district got its name from the river of the same name, which originates in the Khimki forest. Local residents say that the name of the city is associated with a legend that tells about the daughter of a gentleman, Khimka, who drowned in the river. The city is almost 400 years old. Many different historical events took place here.

Temples of the city of Khimki

Everyone will decide for themselves which attractions to start exploring Khimki with. If a person is devout and is attracted by the beauty of churches, then the Temple of the Apostles Peter and Paul, which is about 350 years old, will not go unnoticed. In addition to the Temple of the Apostles Peter and Paul, there are many other churches in the area:

  • The Orthodox Chapel of St. Alexander Nevsky and the Church of the Epiphany are among the newest in the city;
  • Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God;
  • Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian.

All of them are historical architectural monuments that were built from the end of the sixteenth century. All of them amaze with their beauty and interior decoration. Orthodox Khimki has something to be proud of.
