Population of Tomsk 2022 city size, official, how many people live on January 1, census

How many people live in the city of Tomsk, what is the population as of January 1, 2022, what number of people live officially, is it increasing or decreasing in municipal areas, growing or vice versa, decreasing, decreasing and where?

Statistics have always interested people and no matter what it concerns, and we are interested in it for a variety of reasons, out of curiosity and for other, very different reasons, we want to know about something, for example, about a given topic, which we will deal with below.

Main demographic characteristics of Tomsk

The population of Tomsk, whose numbers have been increasing over the past ten years, albeit not at a very rapid pace, presents a rather motley picture. According to the latest statistics, at the beginning of this year, about 586 thousand people lived in the city. Compared to 2010, this figure has increased by about forty thousand, but it is naturally impossible to say that there are no demographic problems in Tomsk.

Firstly, during the Soviet period, the growth rate of the urban population was so high that plans emerged to transform one of the centers of Siberia into a city with a population of one million. However, due to a significant change in the socio-economic situation throughout the country as a whole, these plans had to be forgotten for now.

Secondly, the population of Tomsk is growing solely due to migration. The city remains very attractive to young people from many other Siberian regions, and its developed industry attracts immigrants from the republics of the former USSR with good earnings. At the same time, there are very serious problems with the birth rate in Tomsk itself.

The population of Tomsk in 2022 decreased by almost 8 thousand people

TOMSK, March 17 – RIA Tomsk. Tomsk authorities predicted the urban population to be 602.5 thousand people for 2022, but it did not reach 590 thousand people; Natural population decline amounted to 1.8 thousand people, migration – over 6 thousand, according to the draft report of the mayor of Tomsk for 2022, posted on the City Duma website.

The mayor of Tomsk makes an annual report to city Duma deputies. The text of the document is previously discussed in committees, where deputies express their proposals regarding the plans of the municipal government for the coming year. The draft report of the mayor was published on the website of the Tomsk City Duma. The duties of mayor are temporarily performed by Mikhail Ratner.

It follows from the text that in recent years Tomsk has experienced an increase in the urban population, so for 2022 the authorities predicted a figure of 602.5 thousand people, but the figures turned out to be significantly lower.

“As of January 1, 2022, the population in the city of Tomsk was 589,844 people. Natural decline – 1,803 people, migration decline – 6,172 people,” the document says and notes that the working-age population was 370.6 thousand people (62.8%), over working age – 113.2 thousand (19 .2%), younger (up to 15 years inclusive) – 106 thousand people (18%).

It is reported that natural decline in 2022 consisted of 5,100 births and 6,903 deaths. A decrease in the number of births has been recorded in the city since 2016. The fertility rate (the number of children born to 1 woman) in 2022 was 0.95 (4% less than in 2022), and the mortality rate in 2022 increased by 22.3%. One of the reasons for population decline is the spread of COVID 19.

Over the past 5 years, on average, Tomsk residents have “matured” by a year

“Due to restrictions on the migration movements of citizens introduced to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection COVID-19, in 2022 a migration loss of Tomsk residents was recorded in the amount of 6,172 people (in 2022, due to migration processes, the population of the city of Tomsk increased by 1,526 people ),” the report says.

At the same time, the intraregional migration decline amounted to 2,416 people (3,840 people arrived, 6,256 people left), interregional - 3,300 people (5,521 people arrived, 8,821 people left), international - 456 people (4,678 people arrived, dropped out - 5,134 people).

It was previously reported that, according to preliminary data, the population of the Tomsk region decreased in 2022 by 8,755 people, while the natural population decline amounted to 4,338 people, and the migration one - 4,417 people. According to TASS, the population of the Russian Federation in 2020 decreased by 0.5 million people. The last time a similar situation occurred was in 2005, when the country's population decreased by 564.5 thousand people.

Sex and age structure of the population

The population of the city of Tomsk and its age and gender structure are quite typical for a modern, medium-sized city. However, there are a number of features that arise from the fact that Tomsk at present is, first of all, a city of students and scientists.

According to the latest statistics, there are slightly more women than men in the city - 53% versus 47%. Moreover, this preponderance is formed mainly due to the high mortality rate of men aged 30-40 years. On the other hand, in most other Russian cities (especially large ones) this disproportion is even more noticeable. Apparently, the fact that Tomsk is quite an attractive place for young people makes itself felt.

The population of Tomsk is relatively young. The average age is slightly lower than the Russian average (36 years versus 38). At the same time, the overwhelming majority of city dwellers belong to the category of “working population” (almost 66%). There are approximately equal numbers of minors and pensioners – about 17%. Such figures indicate that the city administration was able to create the necessary conditions in the locality to attract young personnel.

Population in municipal, urban areas

Tomsk was founded in 1604 on the Tom River as part of the Tobolsk discharge; since 1629 - the central city of the Tomsk category.

The hydronym “Tom” was derived by researchers of the 18th century from the Ket word tom, tom - “river”.

At the same time, some linguists believe that this word in the Ket language is a generic designation for a river, while others believe that this word was a proper name and had a special meaning.

Tomsk is located on the border of the West Siberian Plain and the spurs of the Kuznetsk Alatau on the right bank of the Tom River, 50 km from its confluence with the Ob.

The city is located on the edge of the taiga natural zone: to the north there are impenetrable forests and swamps, to the south there are alternate broad-leaved and mixed forests and forest-steppes.

The climate type is continental-cyclonic (transitional from European moderate continental to Siberian sharp continental).

Now we will tell those interested in the climate in the city of Tomsk, what the average temperature was according to research over the past few years, the maximum and minimum values, as well as the average and norms of precipitation:

Whether the population of the city of Tomsk is decreasing or increasing, what is its official number according to the census as of January 1, 2022, in its municipalities, urban areas, we will learn about this later, when accurate information appears, but for now we will present the currently available figures.

Date of foundation of Tomsk: 1604

Time zone: MSK +4, UTS +7

National composition

The population of Tomsk, as well as many other Siberian cities, is very homogeneous in its ethnic composition. Almost 90% of the registered residents here consider themselves to be of Russian ethnicity. This fact is not at all surprising if we remember that the city was founded and subsequently developed mainly through the efforts of Russian colonialists from Central Russia.

The second largest ethnic group includes people from Central Asia. The vast majority of them are Uzbeks and Kyrgyz, who have long adapted to unusual climatic conditions and play an important role in such areas as retail trade and housing and communal services.

Among other nationalities, we can distinguish Tatar, Ukrainian and German diasporas, as well as representatives of the Belarusian and Chuvash peoples. The appearance of the ancestors of these people here was associated with the policy of the Soviet leadership, which, through a system of compulsory distribution, tried to create such national agglomerates in each region of the RSFSR.

Population of Tomsk: division by religious affiliation

Based on the national structure of the city, we can assume that the overwhelming majority of Tomsk residents are Orthodox, and this is true. The first temple - Trinity Church - was built by the founding Cossacks, and then, before the October Revolution, 31 more Orthodox temple buildings were erected here. The leader of the local diocese paid great attention to missionary activities and the baptism of local pagan tribes.

In addition to the Orthodox, there are other faiths in Tomsk. So, even before the revolution there was a fairly spacious Lutheran church here, which was restored in 2006. In addition, the Muslim and Jewish communities, as well as Old Believers, are active. All these religious organizations coexist peacefully, there are no serious conflicts between them.

Social support measures for Tomsk residents

The continued growth of the population of Tomsk, even in a not very favorable period, is largely due to the policies pursued by the leadership of the city and region. Social support for the population of Tomsk includes the following specific activities:

  1. Payments to war and labor veterans, home front workers, laureates of Lenin and state prizes, pregnant women and nursing mothers, as well as some other categories. These payments are regular.
  2. Compensation payments to certain groups of the population for the services of organizations related to the housing and communal services sector.
  3. Additional payments to families in which a second and subsequent child was born.
  4. Help for the most gifted students and young scientists.

Thanks to all these support measures, the population of the city of Tomsk shows good dynamics of its development. However, it is worth noting that the city looks most attractive in the eyes of young people, who value the level of local education. But more mature people tend to leave here to find a job that matches their high qualifications.

Main problems and development prospects

Tomsk, unlike many other Siberian cities, looks very confident in terms of demographics. To the question “What is the population of Tomsk?” local leadership almost always begins to present statistical calculations that indicate the positive dynamics of this indicator. At the same time, there are further problems here too.

Firstly, the population of Tomsk, whose size is almost one hundred percent determined by migration, is in a rather difficult situation. Tomsk is a “delicious place” for young people, students and scientists. However, city leaders should pay more attention to retaining these employees after they complete their training.

Secondly, the very unfavorable environmental situation around Tomsk does not contribute to the attractiveness of the city. If earlier this factor was practically not taken into account, now it plays a very important role for those who want to connect their destiny with this region.

Finally, thirdly, the fate of Tomsk in many aspects is connected with the fate of all of Siberia, and this is a question for the federal leadership of the country.
