Stavropol was founded in 1777 on the orders of Catherine II. The settlement, originally conceived as a fortress, grew rapidly and by the middle of the 19th century became a major economic center. Merchants and Cossacks preferred to settle here.
Even during the construction of the fortress, a cross was discovered, it is unknown how it ended up in a place that previously belonged to the Turks. The village was named “Stavropol”, which translated from Greek means “city of the cross”.
In a modern city, the streets are constantly being improved. The regional center wins landscaping competitions almost every year.

1 reviewStavropol Territory, Lermontov, Mount Beshtau
In Pyatigorsk, from anywhere in the city you can see two mountains at once - Beshtau and Mashuk. And if most of the hospitals are located on the southern slope of the latter, then the five-domed Beshtau protects the resort from the north wind. At the foot of its highest point stands the Second Athos Monastery.

1 reviewsuburb of Pyatigorsk
It was this mountain that gave the name to the main city of the region - Pyatigorsk, “Beshtau” translated means “Five-domed”. It has 5 peaks, only 3-4 are visible from the ground, all at once can be seen only from above. At the foot of the mountain lies Pyatigorye, a famous resort area in Russia with unique mineral springs.
Bull Mountain
One of the main peaks of Pyatigorye, Mount Bull, got its name because of the shape of the dome, reminiscent of a formidable animal with a lowered head. Today Byk is an exclusively natural attraction, but in the Soviet era uranium ore was mined in its “insides”.

The Stavropol Territory is the southern territory of Russia, which was previously the extreme frontier in the war with Turkey.
Later, the region became famous as a resort for the Russian intelligentsia; famous families loved to vacation here. Surely many are familiar with such resort towns as Essentuki, Pyatigorsk, Mineralnye Vody, Lermontov - all these are attractions of the Stavropol Territory. Among the high mountains and dense forests lies the city of Pyatigorsk. Some of its most famous attractions are Hot Mountain and Mount Mashuk. On the ledge of the Hot Mountain there is a sculpture of an eagle with a snake, a symbol of the Caucasian Mineral Waters. And Mount Mashuk is famous for its purest healing water.
It is on Mount Mashuk that the grottoes of Lermontov and Diana are located. Diana's Grotto is an artificial cave designed by the Bernazzi brothers, one of whom participated in the first conquest of the mountain. And Lermontov’s grotto is mostly a natural cave. According to assumptions, it was about this place that Lermontov wrote, describing the meetings of Pechorin and Vera.
Also, after the film “The Twelve Chairs,” Lake Proval became very popular among tourists.
In the vicinity of Stavropol, the so-called Tatar settlement has been preserved. These are the remains of ancient settlements that were formed long before the appearance of the city. The Tatar settlement was associated with a large system of defensive structures. Nowadays, about 200 hectares of the settlement and its surroundings are included in the archaeological and natural museum-reserve of the same name.
In the vicinity of Stavropol, you can accidentally stumble upon old bridges standing alone. Moreover, some of them are quite impressive in size. These are the remains of the Tuapse railway, which existed before the current Vladikavkaz one. Some of the tracks are still in use, but most of the railway has been destroyed.

Do you want to be in silence? — you should go to the Mirror Pond, which is in the lower park of Kislovodsk. Tranquility, magnificent nature and crystal clear water - a truly pleasant atmosphere for a quiet holiday. Representing an artificial pool with the original “Glass Stream” gazebo, the Mirror Pond was built at the end of the 19th century as a reservoir for fresh water from the “Semidegree” spring, the water in which has a constant temperature all year round.
