Story

Kalyazin, whose sights are connected with its history, attracts with its original charm. This city belongs to a number of ancient Russian cities. On the site of the future city in the IV-V centuries. AD lived the Finno-Ugric tribes, and then representatives of the Krivichi Slavs.

The first Russian settlement on the site of Kalyazin was noted in the 11th-12th centuries. Where the Zhabnya River flows into the Volga, merchants from Novgorod identified a trading place. It was here that the monastery “St. Nicholas on Zhabne” was built, and subsequently the St. Nicholas Cathedral. The famous Russian traveler Afanasy Nikitin, having visited Kalyazin (1468), noted this city in his notes “Walking across Three Seas”.

Peter I also visited here at the end of the 17th century. By this time, the Kalyazinskaya Sloboda was located on this site. In 1775, Kalyazin became a district town. Trades such as blacksmithing, tailoring, shoemaking and fulling flourished here. In 1940, during the commissioning of a hydroelectric power station, the historical center of the city was flooded.

There is such a city

Do you know, friends, that foreigners who come to Russia, almost eighty percent of them, come for tours around the cities of the Golden Ring? How many of us Russians can boast that we were there too, that we saw all its wonderful cities? Alas, we are just one of those who, on our vacation, traveled not so much throughout Russia as abroad; we are those who have not seen all the cities of the Golden Ring.

It’s time to fix this, we decided, and chose the capital of the ring, Yaroslavl, as the goal of our next trip.

It’s easiest for motorists - it’s 270 kilometers away by car along the Yaroslavskoye Highway. And along the way there are many towns with wonderful Russian names - Kimry, Borovsk, Kashin, Uglich, Myshkin, Kalyazin... Don’t drive past them with indifference!

It's decided - we'll go. Of course, not all of them, but only three - Kalyazin, Myshkin and Uglich, where we will spend the night. But here a bummer awaited us: we were unable to book a place in any of the Uglich hotels. However, this was a minor problem: in the trunk there are sleeping bags, webast and other joys of automobile tourism :).

The sun strokes the trunk of our car with bright rays - a Toyota named Dambik, kilometers joyfully rush under its wheels, fields, forests and ravines, exits and turns fly by. We turn right from Yaroslavka, then left, in an hour we will be in Kalyazin!

Religious buildings

Kalyazin began its existence with cult sights - the Nikolaevsky and Trinity monasteries. In addition to these temples, there were other interesting buildings here. Unfortunately, most of them were swallowed up by water after the launch of the Uglich hydroelectric station.

Bell tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral

The calling card of the city of Kalyazin is the bell tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral, the symbol and main attraction of this locality. The bell tower is designated as a historical and architectural monument, built in 1800. It is located on an artificial island opposite the city and in the middle of the water of the Uglich Reservoir.

Kalyazin. The main attractions of the city will be the Bell Tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral.

The cathedral itself was dismantled during the construction of the hydroelectric station, and the bell tower was preserved as a lighthouse on the water. Looks great from all angles.

Holy Vvedenskaya Church

Kalyazin Vvedensky Church (Kalyazin, Polevaya St., 36) is located on the right bank of the river. Zhabnya in the Svistukha microdistrict. Built with the financial support of merchant N.I. Okhlobystina in 1882. This is the only temple in Kalyazin that was not closed under Soviet rule and is still operating. The Vvedenskaya Church is single-altar and decorated quite attractively.

The temple building is lined with red brick and decorated with green tent-type domes, with two golden-colored domes with crosses. The bell tower here is made in a two-tier format. A wrought-iron fence stands along the perimeter of the temple grounds with the adjacent cemetery. Entrance to this church is free.

During the years of the USSR, the church was closed and subjected to neglect and collapse. Since 1993, this temple was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church and restored.

The church is open daily from 9:00 to 15:00, admission is free.

Kalyazin, which does not have a large number of attractions, can still surprise its guests. Museums in the city and its surroundings are available to tourists.

Museum of Local Lore

The Kalyazin Museum of Local Lore is located at pl. Nogina, 1. Various photographs, documents and folk art items are presented here. The most interesting are the ancient icons, books and church graphics on display in the museum. A magnificent panorama of the Volga opens right from the museum.

A visit to this museum is arranged through a travel agency. The cost of the entire tour, which includes a visit to Baba Yaga’s Estate, starts from 2 thousand rubles.

Folk crafts - tiles, lace and felt boots

There was an ancient craft in Kalyazin - wood carving. And there were once a lot of master carvers here. In different cities and towns of Russia they decorated houses and made wonderful iconostases. Now the craft no longer exists, but individual craftsmen still exist.

Before the revolution, there was another wonderful folk craft here - weaving lace with bobbins. It appeared in Kalyazin in the 17th century, when Queen Maria Miloslavskaya was fleeing the plague epidemic that broke out in Moscow in the Trinity-Makaryevsky Monastery. Lacemakers also came with her. Now attempts are being made to revive lace making. In the House of Crafts you can simply look at wonderful works, you can take a master class or buy something in the local store as a souvenir of Kalyazin.

The most beautiful Kalyazin tiles were once made here for the walls of houses, palaces and temples. Now they are only in the museum collection.

But they are still making felt boots. And they have no equal as souvenirs!

Monuments

The small territory occupied by the city of Kalyazin has its own monuments worthy of attention. They can be examined in detail during a leisurely walk through this locality.

Monument to Macarius Kalyazinsky

This monument is dedicated to the man who is rightfully considered the founder of both the Trinity Monastery and Kalyazin itself. Macarius of Kalyazinsky stands against the background of a fragment of the wall of an ancient temple. In his hands he holds a model of the temple and a staff. This monument is located at the intersection of the street. K. Marx and st. Lenin.

Monument to Mikhail Skopin-Shuisky.

This monument is located directly next to the Ascension Church. This prince was the commander of the Russian regiments in the battle (at Kalyazin) with the Lithuanian invaders in 1609. The battle ended in the defeat of the Polish-Lithuanian troops. In the composition of the monument one can see an eagle, personifying Russia, sitting on abandoned enemy regimental banners.

The name of the Russian commander is imprinted on the memorial tablet, and below are the names of the commanders of the enemy regiments. In the middle of the monument there is a portrait of the Russian commander.

Monument to those killed in the First World War

Not far from the monument to Skopin-Shuisky there is another memorial sign - to the fallen soldiers from Kalyazin during the First World War. On a rectangular black stele made of granite, the St. George Cross is indicated, and under it are the names of the fallen heroes, residents of Kalyazin.

Do you know any interesting regional expressions?

We stopped near a female tour guide waiting for her group. Sanya asks her: “Are the rest of the monastery buildings visible in the summer? Or just this one bell tower? Many people write that when there is a lot of shallowing, domes come out from under the water and walls appear?”

“No, all this is fantasy,” the sweet woman answers us, “There is nothing left except the bell tower. But the kids, diving, no, no, find at the bottom either a coin or a cross...” And at parting she suggested: “Make a wish and touch the wall of the bell tower - it will definitely come true...”

What a find! Thank you! TOUCH! Komsomolskaya Pravda collects such unusual local colloquial words in its dictionary of travelers around Russia. Let's give it to her - “touch it”!

Mansion of the Shekhonsky princes

This building is located on the street. Vagzhanova, 26 and dates back to the 18th century. The mansion itself is one-story, built in a mixed style. At the same time, one can see an elegant combination of architectural styles of Baroque and Classicism.

Buildings of the Mechanical Technical School

In 1905, a Mechanical and Technical School was built in Kalyazin. The building is made of red brick in pseudo-Russian style, has a spacious area and two large wings. The roof over this building is quite high with a figured design. Now the Mechanical Engineering College is located here (Lenin St., 36).

The building of the former district school

In the 19th century A district school was built in Kalyazin. The building was made of red brick and had 2 floors. The building itself shows features of classicism with shades of provincialism. It is of particular interest among the ancient buildings of Kalyazin. This building was created in 1881-1883 as a Public House, and is a red brick structure with a preserved observation tower, which doubles as a fire tower. Later, the local school, gendarmerie and zemstvo administration were located here. And now this is city school No. 2.

Let's hit the road

Holding a book with the Nikolskaya Bell Tower on the cover about the city of Kalyazin, a magnet, a clay whistle and a jar of honey, we leave the souvenir counters. In the car, we snack on the chebureks we took with us on the road - Sanya has it with cheese, I eat it with meat, and, full of strength and energy, we set off further on the journey to Uglich.

Goodbye, Kalyazin! See you soon in Uglich, friends!

Funny name Zhabnya

And here comes the Volga. Ha, the mistake is not the Volga yet, but only its tributary - the Zhabnya River. Who could tell why she was given such a frog nickname? Or did it come from the buttercup-like medicinal plant toadwort?

There are cars along the shore selling fish. We stop and ask the price. And oats, that is, the catch, is not cheap these days: a small roach costs 100 rubles, a small smoked greenling costs 200 rubles... I sighed sadly - on the Western Dvina for that kind of money they bought such a huge fish.
