7 most unusual and interesting small towns in Russia

Typically, when compiling ratings of popular Russian cities, Internet portals are guided only by statistical data provided by local hotels and apartment booking services. However, not all tourists book hotels, and not every person who books a hotel is interested in the sights of these cities. That is why, in order to find out which cities were actually popular among Russians in 2022, we will turn to Internet statistics of queries from the Yandex search engine.

Three years have passed since we compiled the ranking of the Most Popular Cities in Russia (Top 50 for 2016), and the role of the Internet in the lives of our travelers has grown even more. Requests related to travel, tourism and Russian cities have increased several times. The increase in the number of requests for attractions in Russian cities is also due to the fact that people began to travel more, especially within our country. The number of bloggers has increased, both on YouTube and those who run text sites and magazines about their travels. There are practically no unexplored cities left in Russia: reports, photographs and videos about almost any city in Russia can be found on the Internet.

Yaroslavl is one of the leaders in our rating

The rating was based on the statistics of two search queries in Yandex for 2022 and 2022: “attractions...” and “what to see in...” . We selected fifty leading cities based on the number of users who requested “attractions...” in the search engine, after which the selected cities were ordered by the sum of the main query “attractions...” and the secondary query “what to see in...”. Most requests for “what to see in...” are usually in megacities. As a rule, among the people who requested such information there are many ordinary people or people planning a trip to the city for work and not for tourism purposes.

Moscow and St. Petersburg were excluded from the rating , as the undisputed leaders among Russian cities for tourism, and for the cities of the Crimean Peninsula we compiled a separate popularity rating. The top also did not take into account requests for point tourism sites (Solovki, Valaam, Pechory, Seliger and others).

Compared to the 2016 ranking, only two positions in the top five cities changed. Irkutsk and Tolyatti were dropped from the list and were replaced by Karelian Petrozavodsk and Zvenigorod near Moscow. There are also minor changes in the top ten: Tula and Krasnodar moved Suzdal and Gelendzhik out of the top 10.

If you look by region, the most popular this time were the Krasnodar Territory (5 cities), Yaroslavl Region (4 cities), Moscow and Vladimir Regions (3 cities each in the ranking). The top 10 included two out of eight Golden Ring cities, three millionaire cities and two resort cities.

Cheboksary is a city that closes the list of the most popular cities in Russia.

The numbers indicated in the description of each city are the sum of the number of requests for “attractions...” and “what to see in...” in the Yandex search engine for 2018-2019.

Kazan

1. Kazan . For many years, the first place (after Moscow and St. Petersburg) has been occupied by the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. This time, her total query result reached 1,431,313 . Kazan attracts tourists with its numerous cultural and gastronomic attractions. The authorities have also brought the improvement of the city up to the metropolitan level, and now guests visit not only the Kazan Kremlin with the Kul Sharif Mosque, but also city parks and pleasant pedestrian areas.

Suzdal

In the photo: Museum of Architecture.

Suzdal was first mentioned in the Tale of Bygone Years under the year 1024 in the meaning “Suzhdal”. Most likely, from Old Church Slavonic it literally sounds like “to be a city here.” And so it happened, Suzdal grew into a beautiful and majestic city.

The pride of Suzdal is the historical and architectural monuments of Rus' that have been preserved to this day. The core of the ancient city is the Suzdal Kremlin with three beautiful churches: Assumption (XVII century), Nikolskaya (1720-1739), Nativity of Christ (1775).

If we turn to pure statistics, then in Suzdal there are 5 monastery complexes and more than 50 churches. Here is one of the oldest monasteries in North-Eastern Rus' - the Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery, built in 1352.

Sochi

2. Sochi has also firmly held second position for many years, second only to some Crimean cities among resorts. With a result of 1,205,523 in global terms, it is not far behind the leader of the city ranking - Kazan. Sochi has become popular due to the wide range of entertainment presented in the city, active advertising on television and an increase in the number of offers in the field of resort tourism. This city on the Black Sea coast is surrounded by incredible nature with high mountains and picturesque waterfalls.

Nizhny Novgorod

3. Nizhny Novgorod has confidently taken third place in the ranking of popular cities over the past four years. It is worth noting that its result of 848,162 requests lags far behind the first two leaders. The city has become popular due to its numerous cultural and architectural attractions, including the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, several streets with old merchant houses, a cable car and the wonderful Volga embankments with the Chkalov Stairs. There is a lot to see and do in the city, for example, there are excursions to the Gorky Automobile Plant , and children prefer the Limpopo Zoo and interactive entertainment.

Nizhny Novgorod

How can we not celebrate the city that went down in history as the savior of Russia in the Time of Troubles.

Nizhny Novgorod was founded in 1221 on the Volga. At that time, these were marginal lands, and Nizhny became an outpost of further Russian colonization of the Finno-Ugric lands.

Over its history, Nizhny Novgorod has changed many statuses. It was the center of the principality, later it was a district town. During the period of the Russian Empire, Nizhny Novgorod was a provincial city, and during the Soviet period it was the regional capital and center of the automotive industry.

The visiting card of Nizhny, of course, is the Nizhny Novgorod stone Kremlin. In its entire history it has never been taken as a result of an assault.

15

Kaliningrad

4. Kaliningrad moved Yaroslavl in our ranking, ahead of the capital of the Golden Ring of Russia by only 8 thousand requests. Its result is 792,792 requests. Kaliningrad was once called Königsberg and preserved monuments of German architecture on its land. We must pay tribute to Kaliningrad, which, despite its remoteness not only from Moscow, but also from Russia in general, is a permanent participant in the ranking of popular cities. In addition to the European heritage, access to which is open to Russians without any visas, the Kaliningrad region is home to the picturesque Curonian Spit and the cold Baltic Sea. From Kaliningrad it is easy to get to Poland and Lithuania to continue your acquaintance with European architecture.

Tobolsk

Tobolsk is the first city to become the center of development of Siberia. Founded in 1587, it is famous for its colorful natural landscapes and architecture. You can start getting acquainted with this city from the cultural center, visiting the only stone Kremlin in Siberia, as well as the oldest Orthodox shrine - the Sophia-Uspensky Cathedral, the bell tower of which rises 75 meters.

One of the famous and significant attractions of the city is the prison castle, which will allow you to take a fascinating walk through the entire prison complex and get acquainted with the life of Siberian hard labor and exile. Chernyshevsky, Dostoevsky, Korolenko served their sentences in Tobolsk. You can inspect the cells, go down into the dark dungeon, and even try on the prisoner's uniform and shackles.

By the way, during all this time no one escaped from the Tobolsk prison. The prison regime was considered very harsh. In the hunchbacked punishment cell it was impossible to straighten up to your full height - it was forbidden to sit in it during the day, you could only stand. There are other types of punishment cells, the stay in which was akin to torture - hot, in which instead of one wall there was a stove; cold, no heating; wet, with ankle-deep water in it. The doors of the punishment cell were embossed, with spikes - so that they would not be knocked on. For many, the next refuge after this prison was only a cemetery.

One of the iconic landmarks of the city is the monument to Robinson Crusoe - it is located on Semyon Remezov Street. Oddly enough, the sculpture here is not accidental - few people know that the well-known book hero also traveled through Siberia. This is described in the sequel to Defoe's novel, The Further Adventures of Robinson Crusoe. Robinson arrived in Tobolsk in winter. In the book, the Englishman was amazed to see a brilliant society in the wilderness: princes, courtiers, military men and noble ladies. “Criminals from Muscovy are sent here, given life, because it is impossible to escape from here,” he says through Defoe in the book. In fact, Robinson was supposed to meet in Tobolsk, first of all, the captured Swedes who were sent there by Peter I.

Also in Tobolsk there is the only bone-carving factory in Russia, and therefore the best souvenirs from here will be bone products: keychains, figurines made from deer antlers, sperm whale teeth, mammoth tusks. The products are made almost by hand - such delicate and impeccable work was even awarded European badges of honor. At the factory, you can take a tour and see for yourself the magic of turning bones and tusks into works of art.

Location : in the north of the Tyumen region, at the confluence of the Tobol and the Irtysh.

How to get there : the distance from Tyumen to the city is 246 km, you can get there by train (travel time 4 hours) or by bus. Ticket prices range from 800 to 1500 rubles.

Yaroslavl

5. Yaroslavl (784494) loses one or two positions with each new rating. This time it lost to Kaliningrad, but still remains the most popular city of the Golden Ring of Russia and is rightfully called its capital. The ancient city climbed so high for a reason, because the entire center of Yaroslavl is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the brown bear on the city’s coat of arms represents the whole of Russia. Yaroslavl is the largest city on the most popular tourist route in Russia, where, in addition to visiting ancient churches and numerous museums, tourists enjoy walking along the beautiful embankment and the picturesque arrow. The latter has historical significance and is the site of the founding of the city.

Moore

Murom is the same age as Russian statehood. In the year when it was founded (862), Rurik, the founder of the dynasty of princes, and later the kings of Rus', began to reign in the Novgorod land.

Among the architectural monuments, it is worth noting the oldest monastery in Russia - Spaso-Preobrazhensky, built by architects back in 1015.

With the mention of the name of the city, everyone immediately remembers the Russian hero Ilya, a native of Murom. Many natives glorified not only the city, but also Russia - the pilot Gastello, the playwright Gladkov, the patrons of love Peter and Fevronia.

Ekaterinburg

6. Ekaterinburg, with a score of 544,472 , is not the first time to occupy sixth position in our list of the most popular cities in Russia for travelers. This is one of the main centers of attraction not only for tourists, but also for those who eternally want to move. Ekaterinburg, being the most important transport hub of the country and a large industrial center, creates the impression of a brilliant metropolis on a par with St. Petersburg and Moscow: noisy night streets, where it is as bright as day, huge high-rise buildings and developed infrastructure... But not only this attracts tourists to the capital of the Urals, After all, the city is rich in the creations of the geniuses of Stalinist and pre-revolutionary architecture, famous for its art objects, parks and public gardens, numerous museums and entertainment centers. In addition to monuments of constructivism, tourists are interested in the spiritual sights of Yekaterinburg, including the beautiful Church on the Blood and the elegant Chapel of St. Catherine.

2. Moscow

The capital of Russia is one of the 10 largest cities in Europe (and, unfortunately, the most polluted) - it is the largest city in the country. Moscow, of course, is included in the list of the most beautiful cities in Russia. A huge metropolis that perfectly combines antiquity and modern architecture .

Moscow is the great capital of Russia

The history of Moscow dates back to the 12th century, its architecture is multi-layered, but despite all the upheavals that the city has experienced, buildings from almost every era ; its streets, squares, and buildings keep many secrets and legends. You can explore Moscow endlessly; it is famous for its temples, churches, cathedrals, the Moscow Kremlin, buildings from the Classical era, museums, and beautiful metro stations.

INTERESTING EXCURSIONS IN MOSCOW

Anapa

7. Anapa ( 185,170 ) is the second most popular resort in mainland Russia, located between the foothills of the Greater Caucasus and the steppes of the Taman Peninsula. Tourists come here because of the wonderful shallow sandy beaches and almost daily sunny, windless weather. Not far from the city there are a lot of natural attractions, including Cypress Lake Sukko with a planted grove of swamp cypresses. Unlike Sochi, where ski tourism is developed, Anapa is popular only in the summer, so the city could not rise as high in our ranking as the Russian capital of resorts.

Novosibirsk

In the photo: Bridge over the Ob River.

Nikolskaya Sloboda grew into the village of Krivoshchekovo, and in its place the city of Novosibirsk grew. Currently, about 2 million people live in the center of the Siberian Federal District.

In the photo: Alexander Nevsky Temple.

Among the attractions, the first stone building in the city, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, built in 1899, stands out. This Siberian city is also famous for its beautiful Botanical Garden.

in the photo: Novosibirsk Opera House.

A separate tourist route in Novosibirsk can be a walk to the unique and original monuments of our time - “The Serpent Gorynych”, “Monument to the Seller and Buyer”, “The First Traffic Light”, “Monument to the First Date”. And from here begins one of the most beautiful roads in the world - the Chuysky tract.

4

Vladimir

8. The city of Vladimir is the ancient capital of Russia. Since 2016, the city has occupied sixth position in the ranking, this time with a result of 522,864 requests. Vladimir is one of the closest regional centers to Moscow and houses the ancient sights of Russia included in the UNESCO list: the Assumption Cathedral, the Dmitrievsky Cathedral and the Golden Gate monument of defensive architecture. In close proximity to Vladimir there is another architectural masterpiece - the lonely Church of the Intercession on the Nerl, surrounded by the picturesque Bogolyubovsky meadow, especially beautiful during the flood. In recent years, several observation platforms and a pedestrian zone have been improved in Vladimir, which has made the city even more attractive to tourists.

Perm, cultural capital

The TOP 10 review opens with one of the most famous million-plus cities in Russia. Until 2007, Perm retained its status as an industrial provincial city with a strong economy based on several gas and oil companies and metalworking plants. This state of affairs had a noticeable impact on the environment, which is why the city has more than once been recognized as one of the dirtiest. Nothing special could be said about the scientific and cultural life of Perm.

The situation changed in many ways when the city authorities declared 2007 the “year of the cultural revolution” with the slogan “Let's make Perm the cultural capital of Europe.” Perm, of course, did not become the cultural capital of Europe, but perhaps the capital of the Volga region. The popularity of the city is added by one of the most famous museums of modern art in Russia - PERMM and, perhaps, the best theater festival in Russia, which has become the face of Perm - Diaghilevsky.

If earlier, in order to listen to a truly well-staged opera, art lovers had to go to Moscow or St. Petersburg, then since 2007 the situation has changed somewhat. Perm has become a place of pilgrimage for many connoisseurs of theatrical and contemporary art, and this is perhaps a unique case in modern Russia.

The bet on cultural tourism paid off: following the previous two projects, enthusiasts organized extremely successful festivals that formed a unique cultural background: Flahertiana (for lovers of small documentaries and TV series) and White Nights (summer music festival), as well as many other smaller-scale projects and competitions.

Despite the real revival in the cultural part, in other areas of public life everything is not so smooth: a poor environmental situation (the economy is still based on industrial factories that are located within the city), not the highest average salaries in the region, weak scientific potential and etc.

In other words, Perm is a city that is definitely worth visiting for a great cultural experience. But it can hardly be called the best for life. At least today.

Tula

9. Tula , which received a result of 502,094 queries, is known throughout the country for its delicious and musical brands - gingerbread, samovar, accordion and gunsmithing. Tula is also rich in architectural attractions, including the unique complex of architecture and history of the 16th century Tula Kremlin, merchant houses, churches and estates. And modern Tula will offer city guests a beautiful equipped embankment near the Kremlin and new urban spaces with various cultural entertainments for young people. At the Tula Gingerbread Museum you can learn about local confectionery baking traditions from the 17th century. Travelers go to Tula to explore the ancient Kremlin and center, eat delicious food and have an interesting time. The city deserved this position in the ranking for another reason - because of its close location to Moscow, which made it incredibly popular among tourists in the capital.

Gorokhovets

The city has an atmosphere of original antiquity and past centuries - Gorokhovets has remained almost untouched since the 17th century. For lovers of museums and architecture of those times, it is worth visiting the Ershov House. There is a historical and architectural museum here, merchant life has been recreated, and exhibitions are being updated.

Lovers of picturesque landscapes should climb Bald Mountain, which is so named because there is practically no vegetation on it. There are even some local legends. Some people believe that witches hold their Sabbaths on Bald Mountain. They dance so much that they trample all the vegetation. Others say that during the Tatar-Mongol invasion the Khan of the Golden Horde was buried here, and Bald Mountain is nothing more than a giant mound.

But in reality, everything is simpler - the mountain is so windy that not a single tree can take root here. Although many visitors note that a strong energy is felt, so some people believe that the place is anomalous.

The visiting card of the city is the famous House of King Peas, where comic performances are held for children, and all visitors are treated to pea puree. The program also includes dancing, interesting stories about ancient Russian customs, riddles, and various competitions.

Wooden horses on wheels will be a good souvenir from Gorokhovets. The very first such toys were made by carpenters - Yakushi. In August, the city even organizes Yakusha Day, which brings together craftsmen from all over the country.

Location : city in the Vladimir region, on the right bank of the Klyazma River.

How to get there : the distance to the city from Vladimir is 172 km, you can get there by train or bus (it will be faster). Travel time is about 3 hours. An option for Moscow is a sightseeing tour of the city (time approximately 15 hours excluding travel).

Krasnodar

10. Another newcomer to our top 10 popular Russian cities is Krasnodar ( 486,557 ), which is a center of attraction for business people, young people looking for entertainment and families looking to move. Tourists usually visit Krasnodar, as one of the largest cities in the south of Russia, on their way to Adygea and the Black Sea resorts. In summer, the city's popularity increases thanks to an endless series of "delicious" festivals: wine, honey, pizza, tomatoes and watermelon. As for architectural attractions, in the city you can see surviving bits of historical buildings. Just look at the Central Hotel, built in 1881 and reminiscent of the Singer House in St. Petersburg. And the Krasnodar Galitsky Park is known as one of the largest, most beautiful and modern parks in Russia.

Sortavala

Sortavala is a small city with a population of just under 20 thousand people. It is called the second tourist center of Karelia - it is also the starting point to the island of Valaam. I took a short walk in it during an excursion to Ruskeala. In a couple of hours I managed to get acquainted with several main attractions of the city. The first was the Ladoga Museum - despite its outwardly modest size, when you go inside, you find yourself in a large room full of all sorts of interesting things, one way or another connected with Ladoga. What is there: old boats, fishing gear, parts of boats and ships. Looking at all this wealth, you understand that Lake Ladoga is a real harsh sea.

The Bastion Historical Park is a unique large-scale interactive platform, which is located on the very shore of Lake Ladoga. The territory of the park is a real fortress of the 10th century, where wooden fortress walls, Viking houses, craftsmen's workshops, areas for active activities and exercises - for example, archery - have been recreated. You can approach any character who is a resident of the Fortress and talk to him about his affairs and craft! You can take part in master classes or even transform into a Viking and try on medieval armor!

Residents of the settlement (source: official website bastion-park.ru)

There are various interesting stalls and shops in the city - you can have a bite to eat with fresh Karelian cuisine!

A famous landmark is the Black River. It is really red-black in color - they say black because it contains a large amount of iron salts.

Location : 270 km west of St. Petersburg, on the shores of Ladoga, not far from the Finnish border.

How to get there : the first option is an excursion from St. Petersburg to Ruskeala, which passes through Sortavala; You can get there on your own by train, travel time is 4-5 hours, or by bus No. 805 (Devyatkino metro station, Severny bus station).

Factors influencing the rating

For example, the level of well-being was determined by such indicators as:

  • average monthly salary;
  • possibility of purchasing a new car.

Moscow is undoubtedly the leader here by a wide margin; the incomes of its residents are incomparably higher than those of outsiders Barnaul, Sevastopol and Volgograd. After Moscow come Vladivostok, Krasnoyarsk and Yekaterinburg.

Medical services were assessed:

  • in relation to the number of deaths to the number of pensioners;
  • by how satisfied residents are with the quality of services;
  • by the number of people with low incomes using paid services.

Moscow is again in first place among all cities, followed by the second capital, St. Petersburg, then Naberezhnye Chelny and Tyumen. Tolyatti, Irkutsk, Grozny and Sevastopol became anti-leaders.

Access to education and its level were assessed based on the following factors:

  • the number of children provided with places in kindergartens;
  • the level of salaries of employees of educational institutions in relation to the average salary in the city;
  • the number of residents who are confident in the good level of education in their city.

The city of St. Petersburg was in first place for this indicator, followed by Tomsk, Tyumen and Chelyabinsk. Lipetsk, Naberezhnye Chelny, Tolyatti and Makhachkala close the list.

According to calculations, using the first approach, we can conclude that the best city to live in Russia is Moscow, the rest are in the following order:

  1. Moscow.
  2. Saint Petersburg.
  3. Tyumen.
  4. Ekaterinburg.
  5. Krasnoyarsk ...

36. Tolyatti. 35. Lipetsk. 37. Makhachkala. 38. Sevastopol.

Where do they get more, better treatment and education?

The first approach implies that quality of life is, first of all, a high level of well-being of citizens who have equal access to education and quality medical services. Accordingly, to form the first coefficient, the following are measured:

  • level of material security;
  • provision of medical services that meet modern standards;
  • equal access to education, a real opportunity to receive this education, and not just a document.

Calculations were made taking into account Rosstat data, which can be viewed on the official website. A large number of surveys were also conducted to obtain information on points of interest locally. Each of the three indicators under study is assigned an index, its weight is determined, and then the total value for the city is derived from the average sum of the three indices.

Comparison of the largest cities in the USA and Russia by population

I think it's interesting to make a comparison between the largest cities of the largest country in the world (Russia) and the largest economy in the world (USA). When you look at the table, it seems that the largest cities in the US and Russia are very similar in size.

Russia versus America. Population of million-plus cities in the Russian Federation and the USA. Comparison of countries' populations. infographics

In this video we will see how the million-plus cities of some of the largest and most advanced countries - Russia and America - competed in terms of population. The countdown is from 1800, because... Previously, many cities did not exist or their population statistics are not entirely reliable. Finally, here we will finally find out when Moscow overtook New York in terms of population, because already since 1900 it was a multimillionaire...

Comparison of the largest cities in the USA and Russia by area

When you compare the largest cities by area in Russia and the United States, you see a different dynamic. In Russia, many of the largest cities by population are again appearing among the list of largest cities by area; in the United States, this dynamic is different. In fact, to be honest, it really surprised me.

Where is everyone going?

The best cities of Russia have always been attractive to the residents of our country. The opportunity for development and career growth, a higher standard of living and access to education and medicine are what push people to change their place of residence. Migration indicators clearly show where people want to go to live in order to make things better.

The third study assessed the balance of migration in relation to the number of residents, the number of citizens willing to leave their city, and their satisfaction with their lives.

Based on the results of this study, the ranking of cities looks like this:

  1. Krasnodar.
  2. Kazan.
  3. Tyumen.
  4. Grozny. ...

34. Saratov. 35. Novokuznetsk. 36. Omsk. 37. Tolyatti. 38. Volgograd.

Best city to live

Not long ago, a project was launched to study the quality of life of the population. Sociologists from the Financial University under the Government of Russia are conducting research in thirty-eight localities to rank the best cities based on their standard of living. For a qualitative assessment, it was decided to assign points calculated using coefficients. In this case, three approaches to summing up are used.

Criteria by which achievements are assessed

The best cities in Russia are assessed according to the following criteria:

  • implement social and economic development programs in the best possible way and in full;
  • carry out specified volumes of construction and major repairs of housing stock;
  • have positive dynamics in the improvement of residential buildings;
  • carry out major repairs of road surfaces and lay new roads, sidewalks and storm drains;
  • ensure road safety and an appropriate level of transport services;
  • plant trees and beautify the city;
  • take measures to culturalize the population and preserve historical, cultural and natural heritage;
  • replace dilapidated engineering structures and keep them in good condition;
  • reduce the number of unfinished square meters of housing under construction.

The competition also evaluates:

  • provision of car garages and parking lots;
  • the appearance of the city, compliance with the general style of new buildings;
  • completeness of the architectural composition of the facades;
  • maintaining cleanliness in the city;
  • environmental level and its maintenance.
