Myshkin. Sights, photos with descriptions, names, addresses. How to get there, what to buy, what to see in 1 day. Souvenirs, excursions, price

> Countries Russia

Myshkin is an amazing Volga city, whose unusual name is really associated with a mouse. According to legend, the prince, who had dozed off on the shore, was awakened by a mouse crawling on him. Waking up, he noticed an approaching snake and decided that the mouse that woke him up saved the prince’s life.

For a long time, Myshkin was a small county town without any special historical attractions or industrial enterprises. But in the 1990s, it was decided to turn it into a tourist center of the region. The theme with mice was played out, after which a special museum, palace and monuments appeared, and the names of establishments and hotels were also somehow connected with them (the Mousetrap restaurant, etc.). In addition to modern monuments, the center has preserved churches, merchant mansions and the atmosphere of an ancient small town.

Walks around the city and the embankment

The smallest city in the Yaroslavl region captivates with its cute provincialism and ancient flavor. Picturesque Myshkin is almost entirely built up with one or two-story houses. The streets have changed little since the beginning of the last century, so it seems that time has stopped here.

Bird's eye view of Myshkin

According to local legend, Prince Fyodor Mstislavsky lay down to rest on the banks of the Volga. When he woke up, he found a mouse on his face. At first the prince was angry, but then he realized that the small animal had saved him from the approaching snake.

Since the 1990s, tourists began to willingly travel to Myshkin. New hotels and museums were opened here especially for them. Nowadays, about 140 thousand guests visit the city, where the cult of the mouse flourishes, every year.

View of Myshkin from the Volga

In good weather, it’s nice to take a walk along the Volzhskaya embankment with your child. The walking area along the river is equipped with walking paths and benches for rest.

Every day from early spring to late autumn a ferry departs from the embankment, which takes tourists to the other side of the Volga. The cost of transporting a car weighing up to 1.5 tons is 300 rubles (2021). Passengers are not charged money for the crossing.

Volzhskaya embankment in Myshkin

In summer, in hot weather, it is good to swim in the Volga. There are no equipped beaches in the city. Tourists relax on the sandy shores above and below Myshkin. Residents of the city usually move to the other side of the Volga and swim in the river north of the ferry crossing.

Memory of World War II

On another hill, the highest, there is a war memorial dedicated to the victory of Soviet soldiers in the Great Patriotic War . The residents of this city, like any other in the Soviet Union, were mobilized and fought - in their honor, the Chapel named after St. George the Victorious was opened in 2008.

There is also a museum of military glory called “Small Town in the Great Patriotic War” and a monument to an unknown Soviet soldier, popularly nicknamed Alexei. Behind him are memorial plaques of the townspeople who did not return home and committed heroic deeds.

Mouse Museum

View of the Mouse Museum building

The most visited of the city's two dozen museums was opened in 1991. The one-story wooden building houses a large collection of mouse-themed toys and items. Mouse figurines made of glass, clay, stone and fabric were brought to Myshkin from different parts of our country and from abroad.

The only museum in the world dedicated to the mouse is located on Ulichskaya Street, 18, and is open from 10:00 to 17:00 on all days except Monday. Admission for adults costs 200 rubles, and for children – 150 rubles (2021).

Myshkin Folk Museum

Next to the Mouse Museum, at 21 Uglichskaya Street, a large ethnographic collection is exhibited. The museum was created in 1966 by local historians. Now the territory stretches over almost two hectares - from Uglichskaya Street to Studenoy Stream. In the open air you can see 12 wooden peasant buildings collected during ethnographic expeditions in the surrounding villages.

On the territory of the Myshkin Folk Museum

Forged products and traditional spinning wheels of the Non-Black Earth region are exhibited in the premises. A single ticket to all exhibitions of the complex costs 135 rubles for adults and 85 rubles for children. For a guided tour you need to pay 350 rubles (2021).

Neighborhood

Museum of the Uchem Region

In the village of Uchma on the route Uglich-Rybinsk there is an unusual museum telling the history of the Uchem region. For example, about the monastery of the Kassianovo-Uchemskaya Hermitage, which went under water during the construction of the Rybinsk Reservoir. Several houses with wooden carvings, a church, tools and household items that were used several centuries ago have been preserved on the territory.

The peculiarity of this museum is that through its exhibitions the history of the region is told through the stories of specific people who lived in the village. Therefore, many visitors remain impressed by their visit.

Nearby cities

There are not many noteworthy places in the surrounding area, so it is best to combine the trip with a visit to Rybinsk and Uglich. Rybinsk is a former industrial center of the region with a beautiful and well-kept center and outstanding architectural monuments. Uglich is an ancient Volga city with unique monasteries, the Kremlin complex and the large-scale Uglich hydroelectric power station. You can get to them by car or buses.

Museum of the Capital of Pilots

The original museum, which is interesting to visit with children, is dedicated to local pilots and is located on the territory of the Myshkin Folk Museum. Residents of the Volga city have long been famous as excellent experts on river expanses, sandbanks and impassable rock ridges.

View of the Museum of the Capital of Pilots

In the halls of the local history museum you can learn about the difficult pilotage trade, talented peasant painters, local woodcarvers and potters. Among the exhibits is a large collection of antique samovars and wooden temple sculptures. The museum displays the desk of the poet Nikolai Alekseevich Nekrasov and the personal belongings of the famous Russian naval commander Fyodor Fedorovich Ushakov.

Myshkin is a wonderful provincial town, where there seem to be more museums than residential buildings, and every second resident is a tour guide :)

Museums are for the most part very interesting; they usually tell about the life and crafts of the last century and the century before last. Excellent, very interesting excursions, the guides are mostly very competent, sincerely interested in the history of their city and loving their museums.

There are interesting places nearby that are definitely worth visiting: the “Another World” farmstead in the village of Ivashkovo, the Katskari Museum in the village of Martynovo.

You can extend the trip, add a third and fourth day, and see Uglich and Kalyazin - they are very close.

We offer you a detailed travel plan and all the information you need to plan your independent trip.

We recommend planning such a trip as a road trip. Getting to Myshkin by public transport is very inconvenient.

It’s good if you team up with friends and go with 2-3 families (or more).

Firstly, children always have more fun with company.

Secondly, if you are traveling in a group, you can book many excellent group programs that are not available (or too expensive) for individual travelers.

And the road is safer if you travel in a group :)

You can read a detailed report with photos about the trip along this route here.

And if you prefer to travel in good company, you can join a trip to Myshkin with our club

So, a brief outline of the proposed trip for two days (for example, Saturday and Sunday).

Saturday

6:30-7:30 departure from Moscow (note that there are always huge traffic jams in Yaroslavka).

12:30 - 14:30 - program in the village of Ivashkovo: lunch, excursion to the ethnographic hut, communication with animals, horse riding.

14:30-15:30 - road to Myshkin

15:30-16:30 - Museum "Makhaev Dvor", if possible - with a tea party "Tea with Conversations".

16:30-18:30 (or earlier if “Tea with Talk” didn’t work out) - sightseeing tour of the city, or a quest (you can get a free quest program from us! ;)), and in the summer you can order an interactive program “ Along the paths of the old town"

19:00 - check-in at the hotel, dinner.;) Afterwards, you can go to the bathhouse or just sit with friends.

Sunday

8:30-9:45 — wake up, breakfast, check out from the hotel

10:00-13:00 - visit to the Myshkin Folk Museum, which unites several wonderful museums on one territory: the Mouse Museum, the Museum of Local Lore (also known as the Museum of the Capital of Pilots), the Museum of Old Equipment, the Museum of Small Architectural Forms in the Open Air, a craft settlement , Museum of Canvas and Sheepskin Processing (aka the Museum of the Myshkin Peasantry), Makhaev Dvor (aka the Museum of the Myshkin Merchants), Museum of Pyotr Smirnov.

13:00 - 14:00 - lunch

14:00 - 15:00 - excursion to the Felt Felt Museum and the Museum of Flax Processing.

15:00 - 16:00 - road to the village of Martynovo

16:00 - 18:30 - excursion to the Katskari Museum and a wonderful dinner from a Russian stove

18:30 - 23:00...24:00 way home (time will depend on the situation in Yaroslavka).

And now - in detail!

Saturday, 12:30-14:30, “Another World” courtyard.

What is it: The private museum “The Other World Compound” is a project of Daria Chuzhoy. She is also the founder of the “Museum of Myths and Superstitions” in Uglich. “The Workhorse Museum” is about the same thing.

To be honest, this place doesn’t look like a “Working Horse Museum”; the only thing about horses here is mainly the horses themselves. But as a museum of Russian life - YES! There is a magnificent, colorful Russian hut here. Excursions are usually conducted by Daria herself, and she conducts them absolutely beautifully. Her knowledge about the life and customs of the peasantry of past centuries is truly inexhaustible. The excursion is very exciting for both children and adults.

There are also a lot of animals that you can feed (food is included, but I also recommend taking carrots and apples with you), pet them, hug them, and kiss them:) . There are a lot of horses, goats, rabbits, turkeys, geese and chickens.:) All animals are very clean, well-groomed and accustomed to loving visitors of any age.

What programs to take: The standard program “At Daria’s in Ivashkovo” consists of two parts: an ethnographic excursion with refreshments (tea with pancakes), and a tour of the farmstead - communication with animals and horse riding. Definitely take both!

There are also good fun competitions for the title of best villager and best villager.;) They are not only fun, but also very educational. Do you want to try what it's like to carry water with a rocker? Handle with grip? Milk a cow? :))) You can try all this. But I don’t know about the minimum group size. If you take competitions, then leave half an hour earlier and start at 12:00.

In general, Daria offers a lot of things. Here is an outdated list with hopelessly outdated prices. Many proposals are very, very interesting, if only we had time and money :)

Dinner.:) We suggest having lunch here because it's convenient. After a long journey from Moscow, your thoughts will be about lunch. And also, you will have lunch right in the ethnographic hut - colorful!, and at this time Daria will tell you about how they lived in Russia - it will also save precious time. I must say that on such road trips, time is a particularly valuable resource; if you sit in a restaurant for two hours, then all the museums will close and it will get dark outside, and you won’t have time to see anything.

But as for the quality of the lunch itself - so-so. Everything is quite edible, sometimes even tasty, but in general I wanted more. For lunch they give vegetables, cabbage soup, meat and potatoes and pancakes with condensed milk for dessert. The cabbage soup is delicious, yes - although I didn’t really like the meat in it, I’m generally picky about the quality of meat. The stewed meat is tasty, but the portion is too small for men. Store-bought vegetables, tasteless. Rubber pancakes. They don’t provide village dairy products (eh... but they used to). And the price is quite high - 350 rubles for lunch.

However, they will not prepare lunch for a small group. Now, if a big excursion has lunch on the same day, then they will feed you too.

Prices: as I understand it, in general - negotiable:)

“Daria’s in Ivashkovo” - 250-300 rubles per person, if the group is more than 10 people. Up to 10 - accordingly 3000 rubles. Or in half: an excursion to a hut with refreshments (pancakes) - 150 rubles, a farmstead and horseback riding - 150 rubles.

Competitions with a rocker, grip and milking - we paid only 50 rubles, but I don’t know what the price is for small groups.

Lunch - 350 rubles! (however, if you take lunch, you will be charged 50 rubles from the cost of the excursion with refreshments, since refreshments are included in lunch).

But there is no clear price list anywhere, so, as I understand it, we can negotiate somewhere ;)

Reservations: All programs must be booked in advance. If you arrive unannounced, you may find that there is no one there at all.

How to get from Uglich - see here

Saturday, 15:00-16:00, Mahaev Dvor Museum.

What is it: “Makhaev Dvor” is a museum of the Myshkin merchants. Merchant's house from A to Z: janitor's room, shop, residential apartments, etc.

What programs to take:

The excursion “Makhayev's Court, or Time as a Merchant” is a must. All about merchant life and more.

Interactive program “Tea with Conversations”. This is an amazingly delicious herbal tea with sweets with stories about the tea drinking traditions of bygone times. The stories are very interesting, and the program hosts are excellent.

By this time, lunch will have settled down, and you will want some tea.:) And in the cold season, you will also want to warm up.:) So a tea party will be very helpful. And if it is also combined with an interesting excursion, mmm... So, a visit is highly recommended! But - it is carried out for groups of 10 people, if less - then you need to pay for 10 people.

Both programs will take an hour. If you don’t have tea, you’ll be done in half an hour, and start walking around the city early.

Prices:

Excursion “Makhayev's Court, or Time as a Merchant”: 60 rubles per ticket (under 5 years old - free) + 200 rubles excursion service

“Samovar stories” - 100 rubles for each person aged 5 years and older.

Reservations: “Samovar Stories” must be booked in advance; the excursion can be booked on the spot.

Saturday, 16:00-18:00, getting to know the city.

You can get to know the city in one of three ways.

1) Sightseeing tour of the city.

I’m actually wary of these “look right, look left” style excursions, but Myshkin has excellent guides, so the excursion will most likely be interesting (I say “most likely”, not “definitely”, in case you Still, you won’t be lucky with a guide - you never know... But we were lucky!)

It costs 500 rubles, but often comes for free, as a bonus to other programs in the folk museum and not only - check when you order! Order here

2) Quest with a search for treasure! You can get an exciting, yet very educational quest about Myshkin completely free of charge on our website; details are at the end of the article.

3) Interactive program “On the paths of the old city”.

Judging by the way this program was described to me over the phone, it must be something simply incredible! But, alas, they only hold it in the summer. :(

It costs 1000 rubles for a group of up to 15 people, but it looks like it’s worth it!!! I would take it, it’s a pity, in the summer we are usually in other parts...

Dinner, hotel, bathhouse - recommendations will be at the end of the article.

Sunday, 10:00-13:00, Myshkin Folk Museum

What is it: The Myshkin Folk Museum unites several excellent museums on one territory. These are the Mouse Museum, the Museum of Local Lore (aka the Museum of the Capital of Pilots), the Museum of Old Equipment, the Museum of Small Architectural Forms in the Open Air, the Craft Settlement, the Museum of Canvas and Sheepskin Processing (aka the Museum of the Myshkin Peasantry), Mahaev Dvor (aka the Museum of the Myshkin Merchants), Museum of Pyotr Smirnov.

The Mouse Museum is the most uninteresting, just a collection of mouse figurines and toys.;) But it’s indecent to be in Myshkin and not go to the Mouse Museum, so let’s go! Children, however, will really like it there. A photo with a mouse is a must, otherwise who will believe you that you were in Myshkin?

The Museum of Local Lore (aka the Museum of the Capital of Pilots) - in Myshkin it is very rich and interesting. Like any self-respecting local history museum, it has everything from mammoth tusks to items from the Great Patriotic War. There are many interesting, unusual exhibits. Recommended for visiting.

The Museum of Old Technology is an interesting museum; the exhibits are quite interesting. Recommended for visiting.

Museum of small architectural forms in the open air - this museum in Myshkin is just not very good; in other cities, museums of wooden architecture are much more interesting (Kostroma, Suzdal, Novgorod, Kizhi, etc.).:) There are few houses, they are not very interesting, in poor condition, and most importantly, there are no internal exhibitions. You visit it in any case - you won’t pass by, and you won’t be able to linger even if you wanted to.

The craft settlement, namely the weaver’s workshop, the turner’s workshop and the forge, is definitely the most interesting thing in the People’s Museum! A must visit!!!

The Museum of Canvas and Sheepskin Processing (aka the Museum of the Myshkin Peasantry) - to be honest, I haven’t been there. The first time we went, it wasn’t there yet, and the last time we just didn’t have time. Nevertheless, I am sure that the museum is very interesting, and with a clear conscience I recommend visiting it!

Mahaev Dvor (aka the Museum of the Myshkin Merchants) - they have already talked about it. If you didn’t visit on the first day of your trip, be sure to visit!

The Peter Smirnov Museum is not the most interesting museum in Myshkin.:) Made up out of thin air, based on the fact that Smirnov was born in the Myshkin region. But if you really want it, go, they pour it there

What excursions to take

A must and definitely do is a tour of the craft settlement, with a demonstration of the work of the craftsmen.

You also need to take a tour to the Museum of Canvas and Sheepskin Processing.

The Museum of Local Lore and the Museum of Old Equipment - of course it’s more interesting with a guide, but you can get by.

A tour guide is contraindicated at the Mouse Museum!!! You need it, listen for half an hour to hear which uncle or aunt gave you which mouse? But if you are taking a comprehensive excursion, ask the mouse museum to be reduced to a minimum, or better yet, replaced with any other museum.

At the Smirnov Museum, a guide is needed for tasting.:) Without a guide, they won’t pour.:)

The Folk Museum offers a large number of comprehensive excursions for both groups and individual travelers. If you do not find what suits you personally, you can call and discuss your wishes.

Excursions for groups

Excursions for individual travelers

Interactive programs

I think the most interesting is option No. 2 of the proposals for groups. Only there is an excursion in the Mouse Museum - you need to either hush it up somehow, or ask to exchange it for an excursion in the museum of processing canvas and sheepskin.

Or you can limit yourself to the “Craft Settlement” program of offers for individual visitors.

If you are traveling with two or three of you, you can avoid taking excursions at all, but carefully join one of the excursions :)

Prices: Very much depend on which program you choose. See the links above, prices are current.

Reservation: Better in advance. However, it is also possible on the spot, but you may have to wait for the guide. On holidays, be sure to order in advance.

Sunday, 14:00-15:00, Felt Felt Museum and Linen Museum

What is it: These two museums are located in the same building. In the museum of felt boots you will learn a lot of interesting things about both felt boots and ancient shoes. But most of the exhibits are still comic and decorative.

In the Flax Museum you can trace the entire path from flax seed to linen towel, and also learn about what toys and dolls were in Rus'.

Which excursions to take: It is better to take an excursion to both museums. If it’s really difficult financially, then go to the flax processing museum.

Prices: 60 rubles for an adult ticket to both museums, 500 rubles for excursion services to both museums (250 rubles for one museum).

Reservation: Better in advance. Museums are very popular, on holidays there are a continuous stream of excursions, two groups in one room.

Sunday, 16:00-18:30, Katskari Museum (Martynovo village)

What is it: An ethnographic museum dedicated to the Katskari, a small ethnic group living in the Kadka River basin. This is a very small nation, but they have their own dialect, which is noticeably different from the ordinary Russian language, and many of their own unique customs and traditions.

The museum is located in the village of Martynovo, occupies several village buildings, and the entire village works for the museum.:) They work, I must say, with soul: the museum is magnificent!

The museum has an ethnographic hut. It differs very, very much from the hut in Ivashkovo. The era here is different, the beginning of the 20th century, but in Ivashkovo it was the 19th century, and the way of life here is different. It is very interesting to visit both huts and compare.

The school building is also interesting as a museum, and various programs are held here.

And - a farmstead with animals.:) Cow, horses, sheep, geese. You can pet them and feed them. The animals are very clean and charismatic.:)

Which programs to take: you can read about the programs offered here.

Take definitely the standard program “Let's talk in Russian”.

If you wish, you can also take a quiz on Katsk customs and stories. The quiz is quite interesting, with prizes! We really enjoyed it. On the other hand, this is the part of the program that you can quite easily live without.

Katskari, like Daria from Ivashkovo, is also fed. But HOW do they feed!!! Incredibly, unrealistically delicious! Homemade food cooked in a Russian oven!

The excursion program already includes refreshments: potatoes, cucumbers, baked milk. But this will not be enough for us! Be sure to take the entire additional set:

- cabbage salad - you won’t believe that an ordinary cabbage salad can be SO delicious!:) - chicken from the oven - an ordinary chicken leg, I personally don’t respect chicken legs at all, but THIS leg, simmered in the oven - a simply unearthly dish - Katsky sochen - this is a flatbread stuffed with sweet cottage cheese.:) Tasty, but in my opinion inferior to the rest - homemade pies - delicious! take it with you on the road!

It costs every penny, but is SO delicious! Dinner with the Katskari risks becoming your most vivid memory of the trip. :)

Prices: adults – 290 rubles, children – 265 rubles. Add. food - +100-150 rubles per person.

Quiz - 400 rubles for the whole group.

Reservations: All programs must be booked in advance.

What museums did we miss?

There seem to be more museums in Myshkin than residential buildings. New private museums are constantly opening. It’s impossible to get around everything, and I don’t know everyone. But I’ll tell you about some.

"Mouse Chambers" . A huge, pompous, ornate building, tastelessly decorated both outside and inside, completely out of keeping with the appearance of the city. The guides are forced to call it “the most beautiful building in Myshkin,” while internally shuddering. So: the content matches the appearance. I do not advise! You will find inside a museum of toy bears (just a couple of dozen teddy bears, do you need it?), distorting mirrors (this is the only worthwhile thing there, but is it worth going to Myshkin for this?), a mini-zoo with live mice (go to any pet store, and you will see the same thing for free), and an absolutely terrible performance “reception of the king and queen of mice” - flat, unchildish jokes, terrible animators, terrible costumes. People are taken there in huge crowds of 30-50 people, no one will give a tour for your small group - they will simply attach it to some bus. But this thing is not cheap: 200 rubles for adults, 150 rubles for children. I do not advise!!! Although, of course, it's up to you.

There is a museum “Secrets of the Eighteenth Century” somewhere in the basements of St. Nicholas Cathedral. It's not easy to find, it must be interesting.

"Myshkin Museum of Family Collections" . I haven’t been, but the museum is highly praised. It should be very interesting. I recommend.

Just recently the “Museum of Miniatures” , I suspect it’s a scam for money, but who knows, maybe it’s really something worthwhile. The ticket is expensive - 150 rubles.

“Doll Gallery” is a museum of designer dolls by Olga Pavlycheva. I haven’t been to this one specifically, but in general you can rarely find something really interesting in museums of designer dolls. Ticket 100 rub.

“Uchem Museum of the Cassian Desert and the Fate of the Russian Village” - (right bank of the Volga). This is interesting. The ancient monastic village of Uchma offers a one-of-a-kind museum of the village's past. Cost of visiting: adults - 35 rubles. You can take a tour (book at the folk museum): for a group (from 10 people to 30 people) 200 rub.

Museum of Okhodnichestvo and Peasant Life . Myshkinskoe Trans-Volga region - (right bank of the Volga). I wasn’t, I don’t know. Quite possibly interesting.

Hotels: where to stay

1) “Creative Dacha” This is the most colorful of all possible accommodations!:) When you go on a trip to find out how they lived in Rus', the opportunity to stay in an authentic Russian hut, a house-museum, should not be missed! There are two houses. The main house is the same house-museum, on the ground floor there is an authentic hut, on the second there are two double bedrooms. The second house is “Traveler's Shelter” - a hut with three bedrooms and a spacious living room, a beautiful house, but not authentic. In total, 2 houses have 5 rooms, up to 14 beds.

Pros: - amazingly colorful; — in the center of Myshkin; — there is a kitchen where you can cook for yourself; - there is a bathhouse.

Cons: - one bathroom per house!!!

Prices. Main house - 5000 rubles entirely, or 1200 rubles per person Traveler's shelter - 4500 rubles entirely, or 600 rubles per person Both houses - 8000 rubles.

2) Speaking of authentic... In the Other World Compound, with Daria Chuzhoy, you can also stay overnight.:) I don’t know the details, call Daria +7-962-203-5003. But the amenities there are very bad: instead of a toilet there is a blue cubicle, instead of a sink there is a washbasin with cold water, instead of a shower there is a river. But it couldn’t be more authentic!:)

3) “Cat House” is the most famous hotel in Myshkin. Decent accommodation, reasonable prices.

Pros: — good rooms; — in the very center of Myshkin; - your own wonderful restaurant; — there is a sauna with a mini-pool.

Cons: — a little cramped; — there are problems with hot water; — an abundance of imposed paid services, however, no one forces you to use them; — there is no guarded parking.

Price - from 1500 rubles/person, additional. place - 900 rubles, this includes breakfast. Discounts for groups, unite! :)

4) “Forest Fairy Tale” Gazprom Sanatorium. This is a typical departmental holiday home for a wealthy department: everything is very well built, but without unnecessary luxury that few people need. I really liked the director Nadezhda Ivanovna.

Pros: — good rooms; — sauna and large swimming pool, gym; — its own dining room, where the food is very tasty and inexpensive (but lunch and dinner will need to be ordered in advance); — guarded parking; — located in an amazingly beautiful pine forest; - large, very beautiful area, children's playground; — the only hotel in the city with a conference room. Cons: — located on the outskirts of the city, a bit far from the center on foot (but 3 minutes by car).

Price - from 1750 rubles / person, children up to 5 years old inclusive on the same bed with their mother - free. For groups - 1300 rub/person. Unite! I don’t know how many people there are already in the group, I think about 10.

5) “Summit” Decent accommodation, reasonable prices.

Pros: — good rooms; — in the very center of Myshkin; - your own restaurant; — there is a sauna, swimming pool, billiards; - pets' corner; — also offer boat trips; — a hotel on the banks of the Volga, many rooms with a view of the Volga.

6) “Summit” recreation center and guest house. Summit also has a recreation center and guest house on the outskirts of the city. The price at the recreation center is from 900 rubles for double occupancy, from 600 rubles for four-bed occupancy.

7) Forest Island Cozy comfortable cottages for a company of 4 to 20 people. All with a kitchen and a spacious living room with a fireplace. Where to eat

1) The best cuisine in the city is in the Mousetrap restaurant. Interesting menu, very tasty food.:( Prices are reasonable. But this is also the most problematic restaurant in the city. Firstly, you will have to book a table for 2-3 weeks, because... Tour groups tightly occupy the restaurant. Secondly, you are guaranteed two hours of waiting. I'm not exaggerating - this restaurant really breaks all records for length of service. If you want to have lunch and still have time to see something else, come in in the morning, leave your order, prepayment and ask for it to be ready at a certain time. You'll still have to wait, but maybe not two hours, but an hour. And also - recently reviews have begun to appear that the quality of food has also changed not for the better - alas, this often happens with popular places

Summit Hotel also has a good expensive (by Myshkin’s standards) restaurant with good cuisine. The menu here is not as intricate as in the Mousetrap, but there is still something to choose from.

3) Dining room at the Lesnaya Skazka hotel. Very inexpensive, homemade delicious food. Lunch - 250-300 rubles, dinner - 250 rubles. But - you need to order in advance, and there is almost no choice (what large groups ordered on this day, the same will be offered to you).

Vegetarians will have a hard time in Myshkin.:) In Myshkin they don’t yet know that there are such eccentrics who do not eat meat. We had such people in our group, but since we had a group, we managed to agree on a vegetarian menu both in Ivashkovo and in the dining room of the “Forest Fairy Tale”. But for two people no one will bother. Get ready to subsist on buckwheat, omelettes and pancakes.

Mouse's chambers

The funny “mouse” museum welcomes tourists in a representative three-story mansion with beautiful carved frames. The entertainment center offers interesting animation programs for little tourists called “Wonders of the Mouse Kingdom.”

In the basement of the building there is a tiny living area where they keep a wide variety of rodents, including bats.

View of the Myshkin Chambers

The chambers, which are often called the “Mouse Palace,” are located on Nikolskaya Street, 4. The entrance ticket for adults costs 200 rubles, and for children – 150 rubles (2021).

Don't knock your galoshes

The museum of small-scale peasant architecture contains wooden huts, barns, chapels and even a 19th-century forge.
Photo: globallookpress.com Once upon a time, tiny Myshkin was not just a small merchant town, of which there are a dime a dozen on the Volga, but a real capital of pilots. Experts in navigating the fairway from here worked along the entire river - from its headwaters and almost to the Astrakhan delta.

That’s why we go to the museum, which is called “The Capital of Pilots”. But here’s the joke: there’s a small corner at the entrance about pilots, but in fact it’s an ordinary local history museum.

But why ordinary? The exhibition was put together with great love, and therefore many interesting exhibits fit into three small halls: from wooden pagan idols and furniture made from burl by a local craftsman to gramophones and the first televisions of our parents and grandmothers.

I catch my eye on the huge wooden galoshes with iron soles.

“And when rubber was no longer supplied to the country after the revolution, the locals came up with the idea to make something like this,” explains the servant. And he also sings to us a ditty from those not-so-long-ago times in the historical context:

Don't walk down the corridor

Don't knock your galoshes,

I still won't love you -

The muzzle is like that of a horse.

- By the way, will you only look here or will you go outside? – she suddenly asks.

- What do you have there?

- Oh, we have four more museums there - peasant architecture of small forms, the Myshkinsky self-propelled gun, canvas and sheepskin, but it is now closed, but the gallery of chests and the salt museum are open.

- And how much does it cost to watch all this?

- Sorry, but we don't have any discounts. It turns out, together with ours, 130 rubles per person.

- Is it possible to take pictures?

- Can. But you will have to pay another 10 rubles for photo or video shooting.

- Well, you completely ruined us!

I see no point in talking about this feast of small architectural forms, these mills, chapels and barns crowded on the street, or about the strange and sometimes funny juxtaposition of seemingly disparate things in the museum of technology. Such as the old Muscovite cars, Pobeda cars and baby strollers with pedal cars standing nearby.

But there were several touching literary and folklore episodes, I cannot help but mention them. For example, a full house in the gallery of chests and keys: “Locks, doors and chests welcome you!” Or in the same place: “Dear guests! If there is a dishonest person among you, please explain to him that there is no need to take something from here as a souvenir!” And I wanted to take a bigger chest for myself - about five pounds, but I read it, was ashamed, and only took the photograph for which I honestly paid.

The caring warnings at the frozen, but apparently not very frozen, pond were also touching: “Be careful, the pond is very deep” and “Unfortunately, the slide does not work - the water is not frozen.”

But the salty everyday inscriptions with a slight touch of eroticism, hung in the salt museum, invigorated: “A woman without shame is like food without salt,” “Drink sour, eat salty. If you die, you won’t rot”, “It’s not too salty to slurp, why kiss the unkind.”

Optimistic, in general, cultural and educational institutions.

Chistov Estate

Near the pier itself, on Nikolskaya Street, 18-20, there is a merchant estate, which formerly belonged to the mayor Timofey Vasilyevich Chistov. The buildings, built in the second quarter of the 19th century, occupy an entire block.

View of the Chistov estate from the Volga

The main house, a two-story mansion with a mezzanine and stucco cornice, is considered the most beautiful in the city. It was here that the future Emperor Alexander III stayed in 1866. For a long time, the estate was occupied by a city hospital, and after restoration it was converted into a large museum complex.

Some premises are given over to the library and the city tourism center. In addition, on the territory of the estate there is a museum “Russian Valenki”, a wooden house chapel of Flora and Lavra, an interactive museum “Miller’s House” and an exhibition “Myshkin in old photographs”.

View of the Chistov estate from the Assumption Cathedral

The main mansion houses one of the largest collections of tiled stoves in the Volga region. The building also contains rare books from the personal library of Field Marshal Mikhail Ivanovich Kutuzov, antique samovars and papier-mâché dolls.

In the colorful Russian Valenki Museum you can learn about the traditional technology of making felt boots, see felting machines and a variety of felt crafts - toys, panels, tapestries and sculptures. The ground floor of the building houses a small Flax Museum.

Exhibits of the Russian Valenki Museum

Guides tell visitors how the Russian tsars treated felt boots, how brides chose their grooms using felt boots, how rheumatism and other diseases were treated with felted shoes. Admission for adults costs 100 rubles, and for children under 7 years old – 80 rubles (2021).

In the 19th century there were many mills in the city, and the largest of them was owned by the merchant Chistov. The old mill worked faithfully until the 1970s, so its mechanisms are well preserved. In the mill house they conduct interactive programs for adults and children, show all the stages of turning grain into flour, and also treat tourists to tea with pancakes and jam. Admission for adults costs 480 rubles (2021).

Brief history

The existence of the village was mentioned already in the 15th century. This information is contained in the charter of 1605, which was granted by the ruler. She was given to the boyar Danila Ivanovich Mezetsky. In the 17th century, the village was part of the Moscow Chudov Monastery. This led to the fact that over time the settlement began to increase in size.

Many buildings for economic purposes appeared - stables, warehouses, barns, mills and others. Later, the village was transferred to the department of state economy and began to be called a settlement. City status appeared in 1777. The coat of arms featured a shield.

The end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century was the heyday of the city. Various schools and colleges appeared, a public library and a printing house opened. The place became the center of fair sales. Merchants from nearby settlements came here to trade. Many products were sent to St. Petersburg.

Cultural and educational life did not stand still. They built a pedagogical college, sports organizations, museums, an art gallery, and their own weather station appeared.

A memorial cross was erected at the confluence of the Volga and Yukhot. There is an inscription on it. These are words from a legend. They say that once a gray mouse saved a great ruler from a poisonous snake. Although scientists doubt this legend, no one wanted to give up the beautiful story. In honor of the great salvation, a chapel was subsequently built. She was guarded by a watchman. The gatehouse became the first housing that appeared on this land.

Today, the compact town is visited by a large number of tourists. It attracts with stunning beauty, tranquil surroundings and an abundance of iconic food. The city is included in the Golden Ring of Russia.

Museum of retro technology "Myshkinsky Samokhod"

Exhibits from the Myshkinsky Samokhod museum of retro technology

With a child who is interested in vintage cars, it is worth visiting the museum, where old cars, agricultural equipment and motorcycles are collected. The most interesting exhibits: the famous “lorry” - the pre-war GAZ AA, the “emka” - GAZ-M1, the allied “Willis” and the domestic “Pobeda”. The exhibition includes river boats, an aircraft turbine and an exotic steampunk locomobile.

You can touch each model and take a memorable photo. Sometimes visitors are even allowed to drive.

Since 1998, the Myshkin Museum has been holding a spectacular parade of retro technology dedicated to City Day. Unique cars slowly drive through the streets of Myshkin, and many people gather to see the unusual spectacle.

The automobile museum is located in an old garage, on Uglichskaya street, 21. Tourists are accepted any day except Monday from 10:00 to 17:00.

Not hemmed, old...

There are all sorts of felt boots in the museum of the same name - even “mouse” ones!
Photo: globallookpress.com To be honest, I’m not too big a fan of all these voles, shrews, house mice and lemmings. And stories from their existence, real and imagined. Therefore, I quickly run through mouse-protected places - to put a tick: they say, I’ve been, I’ve seen...

Another set of expositions is much more interesting. For example, there are two museums located in a small mansion of urban nobles - felt boots and linen. A ticket to both museums at once costs 145 rubles.

In the first (it's on the second, master's, floor) there is a real kingdom of pims (that's in Siberian) and wire rods, as they were called in our Ural village. Shoes in which I spent my entire childhood. Only here the felt boots are hung like toys on a Christmas tree, even with appliqués for unearthly beauty. There are even heels - for urban fashionistas. Well, this, of course, comes with all sorts of mouse symbols.

In general, a luxurious food supply for lepidopteran insects, that is, clothes moths. As they say, here, around the corner, there is a table and a home ready for her.

- Are moths not bothering you? — I ask the museum curator.

“Yes, yes,” the lady answers.

- And how do you fight it?

“Yes, as much as we can,” the keeper of the felt boots sadly says. – We collect tansy and lavender, and dry orange peels to repel insects.

So hurry up to visit here before the moths devour all the exhibits. There is nothing to replenish the exposition: the local felted shoe factory closed several years ago.

But the exhibits of the neighboring Russian Linen Museum - we go down the creaky servants' stairs into it - are eternal. Like Russian flax itself. Like Russian tarpaulin and chesucha. Even Myshkin’s mice, especially mostly toy ones, are not scary to them. There is also a small store where they sell finished products from Kostroma and Vologda.

My whole house is already littered with linen tablecloths, sheets and towels from past trips to Russian cities. But the wife still buys several towels for gifts, making, as she says, a long-term investment. And you can’t argue that my great-grandchildren will also use these textiles...

Where to stay in Myshkin?

The small town has a population of just under 6 thousand people. Almost all accommodation for tourists is located on four main streets - Uglichskaya, Lesnaya, Nikolskaya and Karl Liebknecht. If you come with a child for a couple of days, the cheapest option is to stay in an economy room in a guest house.

Look for more comfortable conditions and service in Myshkin hotels. Some have indoor pools, while others offer bicycles for rent for families exploring the city.

To cook on your own, it is convenient to rent an apartment from local residents. Options on the outskirts of the town - 2-2.5 km from the main museums - are slightly cheaper than in the center of Myshkin. When choosing accommodation, keep in mind that only minibuses travel around the city, the route of which runs past all the main attractions of Myshkin.

How to get there?

regularly conducts trips to the cities of the Golden Ring of Russia.

Travel from Kazan

Travel from Cheboksary

Travel from Yoshkar-Ola

You won’t have any difficulties getting to the city. The settlement of Myshkin is located in the Yaroslavl region. It is 85 kilometers from Yaroslavl. You will need to travel along the Yaroslavl-Ulich highway. The movement will be carried out to the village of Churilkovo. Then you will need to take a ferry across the Volga. Check the Myshkin ferry schedule in advance.

The Yaroslavl-Myshkin bus schedule is easy to remember. There is only one car from Yaroslavl to the city. It leaves in the evening, at 17-30. Tickets can be purchased at the station. There is an option to get there with a transfer if you get off at Bolshoye Selo and transfer to another flight. Many people prefer to choose a personal car. This significantly reduces travel time.

You can get there by boat. This solution is in demand among visitors. Boarding takes place at the Northern Marine Station. The liner will travel along the canal. Moscow to Dubna, and then proceeds along the Volga. All ships are four-deck and comfortable for travel. A cruise to Myshkin will give you a lot of positive emotions.

Where else to go

Be sure to take a walk along the embankment and pier. If you're lucky, you'll catch the arrival of a cruise ship. In honor of such an event, dozens of trays and stalls with all kinds of souvenirs and generally the best goods that the town can offer its guests are set up on the embankment. It’s worth getting a pair of felt boots and a “wallet” mouse, which will protect against waste and poverty, bringing in return wealth and good luck. Here you can also buy aromatic smoked eel, a handmade tablecloth, a healing belt made of dog hair, candlesticks and kitchen utensils handmade by local blacksmiths.

Myshkin town is small, but famous and popular among tourists, including foreign ones. Many foreign guests want to look at the collection of felt boots, try Russian vodka with pickled cucumber and cuddle with the real mouse King and Queen, and therefore the prices in the town are not at all provincial, be prepared for this. There are practically no luxury restaurants in the town, but there are plenty of cafes and canteens that serve inexpensive and tasty homemade food. Since you are in Myshkin, it is recommended to go to the Mousetrap establishment for lunch. They serve pot roast, fried Volga pike perch, fish soup with pies, shish kebab, pork roll and real sbiten. A compliment to every visitor is a slice of cheese and a mouse-shaped cake.
