Hungry City

Since 1770, peacetime begins in the city of Glupov. Over the next six years, foreman Pyotr Petrovich Ferdyshchenko calmly ruled. It was during these years that the Foolovites felt the happiest. They liked the simplicity of the mayor, his non-interference in the affairs of the residents. They rejoiced with him in the quiet, philistine life.

However, in the seventh year, the mayor was “confused by a demon” - Ferdyshchenko fell in love with a woman. Wanting to become stricter in order to please Alyonka, he took out his anger on the Foolovites. Moreover, the mayor began to rob citizens. By cunning, Ferdyshchenko sent Alyonka’s husband to Siberia. The poor Foolovites had to pay for all their sins: a terrible drought and famine began in the city, because of which people began to die.

Residents of the city decided to take the situation into their own hands. After several unsuccessful attempts to peacefully reach the mayor, they took extreme measures - they threw Alyonka from the bell tower. However, soon soldiers were sent to Foolov to suppress the rebellion.

Characteristic features of the 22 rulers of the city of Foolov. 3. The life of mayor Brudasty, who had an organ in his head. 4. The struggle for power in Foolov. 5. Dvoekurov’s reign. 6. Quiet years and famine under mayor Ferdyshchenko. 7. “Progressive” activities of Vasilisk Semenovich Wartkin. 8. Many different rulers of the city who made changes to its way of life. 9. Corruption of the city's morals. 10. Gloomy-Burcheev. 11. Essay by Vasilisk Wartkin about the obligations of the mayor. 12. Work by Ksaver Mikaladze on the external and internal appearance of the ruler. 13. An essay by mayor Benevolsky about the good-heartedness of the ruler.

Inventory for mayors

Here we are introduced to the mayors of Foolov, and their biographical information is also told. None of the rulers had any education. One was a good cook, another was a foreman, the third was a wonderful tradesman.

But the most “brilliant” mayor was a certain Wartkin. He gained his fame due to the fact that he served for a very long time, and during his service he burned a large number of settlements, explaining that it was all done for good.

They all died very ridiculous deaths. But their service was destructive, but did not carry any meaning.

The era of retirement from wars

"In 1802 Negodyaev fell." By the end of his reign, the city had turned into a “disorderly heap of blackened and dilapidated huts,” and the locals became covered in fur and began to suck paws. “Cherkashenin” Mikaladze became the new mayor. In order to bring the Foolovites in order, he decided to temporarily abandon the imposition of education and related executions, as well as the adoption of new laws. A positive result appeared within a month. Subsequently, Mikaladze ruled calmly. The only weakness of this mayor is his excessive passion for women. He died in 1806. The cause of death was “exhaustion.”

The next mayor was Benevolensky, a man who had a special passion for writing laws. It turned out that Foolov's rulers did not have the right to issue their own laws. He became upset and began writing sermons. As a result, Benevolensky still could not stand it. The thirst to write laws won. The mayor disseminated his orders in a strange way - he scattered leaflets along the streets at night. One day Benevolensky was arrested for treason. He wrote letters to Napoleon, inviting the French ruler to Foolov. The fact is that the merchant Raspopova, with whom Benevolensky lived, wanted to see Bonaparte.

Next they sent Major Ivan Pryshch. He did not issue laws, but Foolov flourished during his reign. It turned out that Pimple had a stuffed head. This was recognized by Foolov's leader of the nobility. He also ate the mayor's head.

Worship of Mammon and repentance

Hard times began in Foolov. All public life “lay to the bottom.” Mayor Pyshch was replaced by Ivanov. However, his stay in the city was short-lived, and the reason for his departure is still unknown. Some believe that Ivanov died of fright (his small head was not capable of passing serious laws), others that the ruler was simply dismissed due to failure to fulfill his duties (his head had reached a “rudimentary” state)

Since 1815, the Frenchman Viscount du Chariot ruled in Foolov. He led a cheerful, riotous life, was interested in men (subsequently a study was conducted in which it turned out that du Chariot was a woman). The mayor did not accomplish great things; he was almost not involved in the state. The Foolovites were tired of their calm and happy life, they began to create riots and adopt a new faith (paganism). The ruler, who approved of any actions of citizens, was sent abroad.

Erast Andreevich Grustilov is the next mayor. By this time, the Foolovites had completely rejected God and began to lead depraved lives. Because of their reluctance to work, famine occurred in the city. At first, Grustilov did not care about this state of affairs; he was busy having fun. However, the pharmacist's wife showed him true moral values. People who occupied the lowest position in society became the most important in the city. The Foolovites repented of their sins, but did not begin to work. When it turned out that they read Mr. Strakhov at night, Grustilov was removed from the board.

Minor characters and their characteristics:

  • The people are a collective image, the population of the city of Foolov, who have to withstand all the mayors they send and endure their antics. Submissive, always ready to offer his back, but if pushed to the extreme, capable of violent rebellion. He rejoices at every newly arriving boss, hoping that the era of fair rule will finally begin.
  • Benevolinsky is one of the most loyal mayors, who did not greatly infringe on the people.
  • Mikaladze is a mayor who was very fond of the female sex.
  • Ivanov is a short mayor, whose head shrank from the strain when he failed to assimilate the commanding decree, the ancestor of microcephaly.
  • Grustilov is a liberal mayor who once sharply changed his line of behavior and turned to asceticism.
  • Domashka is a girl of “free behavior”, beautiful, brave, dissolute, a lover of the “green serpent”.
  • Iraida is the first ruler of Foolov during the Time of Troubles, an impostor, a lady of high birth.
  • Amalia is a buxom German woman, another ruler of Foolov, also an impostor.

Movies: “The Counterfeiter” and “Licorice Pizza”

Drama “The Counterfeiter” (USA)

Sean Penn's next directorial work is originally called "Flag Day" - this is another story based on a true story on the theme of the collapse and triumph of the "American Dream". We observe the collapse in the example of the hero Penn himself, who acted as a subject born on the main patriotic holiday of America - Flag Day. He managed to ruin all the chances of being a citizen of a superpower by becoming an entrepreneur - that is, a rogue without a specific type of activity, a swindler, who, together with his alcoholic wife, turned the lives of his children into hell. The triumph, on the contrary, is the example of his daughter (Penn’s daughter Dylan), who, despite everything, made it into the people and became a journalist.

Comedy “Licorice Pizza” (USA)

One of the most anticipated films of the pre-Oscar season has already earned four Golden Globe nominations - however, all films by Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia, The Master) are highly anticipated. The new film has been compared to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - it is full of autobiographical references and footnotes to recent Hollywood history, although the frame of the plot is the romantic story of the relationship between a young woman and a guy ten years her junior. The latter is played by Cooper Hoffman , the son of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman , who often starred with Paul Thomas Anderson and died in his prime...

Organ

In August 1762, a new mayor, Dementy Varlamovich Brudasty, arrived in Glupov. Local residents waited impatiently for him, showing “the usual Foolovian enthusiasm” and “the usual Foolovian frivolity.” The busty man showed himself to be a silent and gloomy man. The only thing he said when he first met the officials was: “I won’t tolerate it!” Afterwards, the mayor locked himself in his office, where he constantly signed various orders. Sometimes he went out, gave the clerk a pile of papers and again shouted “I won’t stand it!” In all parts of the city, work began to boil - people were grabbed, flogged, their property was described and sold.

Soon the Foolovites became despondent. An “ominous and unaccountable fear” reigned in the city. As a result, it turned out that inside the mayor’s head there is an organ that can play only two pieces: “I’ll ruin you!” and “I won’t tolerate it!” When Brudasty was traveling to Foolov, the mechanism became damp and deteriorated. Clock and organ maker Baibakov tried to repair it, but failed. Therefore, a new head was ordered in St. Petersburg. While she was walking, Brudasty’s secret was revealed. His story ends with the fact that two mayors met in Foolov. One Brudasty had a head ordered from St. Petersburg, the second had a hastily repaired head by Baibakov. The publisher of “The History of a City” explains in a footnote that both mayors are impostors.

Main characters and their characteristics:

  • Dvoekurov is one of the “advanced” mayors who introduced such innovations as the mandatory use of bay leaves and mustard in Foolov. In addition, he tried to establish an academy.
  • Gloomy-Burcheev is the last mayor, a man completely devoid of emotions and feelings, described as a “gray” man, “with a wooden face,” “thin lips... with a bouquet of readiness to crush or bite in half.” Denoted by the chronicler as “idiot.” He only knew how to force his subordinates to “dig from the fence until lunch” and destroy everything aimlessly.
  • Busty - silent and gloomy, knowing only two words: “I will not tolerate it!” and “I’ll ruin you!”, who literally had no brains - instead of them, an organ was built into his head, playing only these two motives.
  • Pimple is very “simple”, outwardly even quite loyal, but later it turned out that his head also had no brains, but was stuffed with minced meat and ended up being eaten by the city leader.
  • A chronicler-archivist is a person who for many years scrupulously recorded all the events that took place in Foolov and from time to time gave them a subjective description.
  • The publisher is the person who found the manuscript and put together the scattered pieces; the story is narrated on his behalf.
  • Alenka is a local Foolov beauty, with a blonde braid down to her toes, with rosy cheeks, torn from her husband by the mayor Ferdyshchenko and seduced by him.
  • Wartkin - “buttoned up”, “thoughtfully biting his mustache”, a short, middle-aged official full of energy, tried to write, slightly improved the life of the Foolovites, he even had a project for an academy, with which a short-lived “golden age” began for the Foolovites "
  • Ferdyshchenko is an elderly former orderly of Prince Potemkin, bent due to age, but at the same time voluptuous (he constantly seduces women, because of him the beautiful Alenka died). Two-faced and crafty.

the main idea

The summary of the work shows all the vices of society. “The History of a City” accurately conveys the thinking of people who are unable to resist autocracy. It is always easier for people to live in obedience than to fight for the truth and build a just society.

A brief retelling is useful to read for those who do not have time to get acquainted with the whole novel. The work is relevant at all times, because the city’s residents are modern people, accustomed to going with the flow. They do not argue with the state and are content with little.
