Location. Unecha stands in the upper reaches of the river of the same name, a tributary of the Iput River, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Bryansk (about 140 kilometers by road).
Briefly about the city. The founding date is considered to be 1887, when the Unecha station was built on the Bryansk-Gomel railway line of the Polesie Railway. Then warehouses began to be built at the station, and this is how a village was formed. It is this version that is considered official, although there is another: that the station was named after a village that already existed nearby. Indeed, the earliest mention of a settlement with this name dates back to 1770, and it cannot be unequivocally stated that a different area and a different settlement were meant.
By 1914, Unecha, located near the railway, was an urban-type settlement; About 2,200 people lived there. Due to the abundance of forests around, a sawmill and a chip factory were actively operating in Unecha, and timber from Unecha was supplied to different parts of Russia and even abroad. The village began to grow especially rapidly after 1929, when the railway from Kharkov to Orsha was built, and Unecha became a major railway junction. Uneche city status was awarded in 1940.
During the Great Patriotic War, Unecha was heavily destroyed; it was rebuilt in the post-war years. It is the fifth largest city in the Bryansk region. Currently, just over 23 thousand people live in Unecha (data as of January 2019).

Authorities. The Unecha city administration was liquidated in 2022, since then Unecha has been part of the Unecha municipal district. The head of the district and chairman of the district Council of People's Deputies is Maxim Shatoba, and the responsibilities of the head of the district administration are assigned to Anatoly Kuskov, who previously served as head of the administration. Kuskov will remain acting until the election of a new head of administration and the entry into office of the winner.
Economy. There are several operating in the city, formed on the basis of a radio factory and producing household appliances; refractory metals plant "Tungsten"; mechanical plant) and a number of other enterprises - for example, Unechsky meat and poultry plant, Unechsky bakery plant; creamery The locomotive and carriage depot plays a special role, since Unecha remains a major railway junction. Intracity bus service has been developed. The Unecha relay station provides television and radio broadcasting in the west of the entire Bryansk region. In 1995-98, mineral waters were discovered in Unecha. Currently, there are two artesian mineral water wells in the city.
Attractions. Unecha is called a “sunny city” and a “park city” due to the abundance of greenery and flower beds in the parks. The recreation park near the House of Culture named after May 1 is especially popular among residents and guests of Unecha. The city has a local history museum with several exhibitions, and an art gallery displaying works by local artists and guests of international plein airs that have been taking place in Unecha for more than 15 years. In 1995, on the 50th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, a monument to the fallen was opened in Unecha.
Among the architectural monuments in the city, the former water pumping station and the railway station building have been preserved. The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which also looks like an architectural monument of the 19th century, was in fact destroyed during the war and was restored only in 1998 using public funds. True, in the Unechensky district, the Assumption Church, built in 1825 with the money of Count Yakov Chernolussky in memory of the Patriotic War of 1812, survived.
In general, tourists are attracted mainly by the beauty of nature around the city and clean air. Views of the surrounding lakes are depicted on the canvases of many artists. The Bryansk Ostrich agricultural farm, which exists in the Unecha region, is also famous in its own way, where ostriches are actually bred.
Famous people. Vladimir Bazan, Belarusian photojournalist; Alexander Kalyanov, Soviet and Russian sound engineer, actor, singer, composer, three-time winner of the Chanson of the Year award; Alexander Putsko, Russian football player, defender of the Ufa club; Dmitry Sannikov, Russian football player, midfielder; Vladimir Stratanovich, Soviet and Russian historian, orientalist; Pavel Yakubovich, Belarusian journalist, former editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Soviet Belarus”.
Feedback from a citizen. The city is quiet, green, there are places to relax, including with children. But we have mostly well-maintained parks and playgrounds, but the roads are very bad and the streets are so-so. It’s not easy to get a job, the salaries are low. Well at least the prices are not very high.
