Mozhaisk Sights, photos, what a tourist should see on his own, route around the city

Mentions of the city of Mozhaisk appear in chronicles for the first time in 1231, but it began its existence much earlier. Mozhaisk was a fortress of the Moscow principality on its western borders.

At one time, Mozhaisk was the largest religious center of Muscovy and consisted of 40 streets, 15 settlements, 16 monasteries, 75 churches and 400 shops. The city was the residence of the great princes - Vasily III, Ivan the Terrible, Boris Godunov. Little has remained of its former splendor, but the city still has interesting places worth visiting.

On the way to Mozhaisk you can stop by several interesting places - Vereya, the Pushkin Museum-Reserve and others - all of them are marked on the map in the article about the sights of the Moscow region.

At the same time, Mozhaisk is located practically on the border of the Smolensk region - there are even more interesting places and cities there.

Most of the cultural and historical attractions of Mozhaisk are open to visitors all year round. Therefore, you can plan a trip to this city at any time of the year.

Religious buildings

There are many historical buildings of a religious nature in Mozhaisk.

Novo-Nikolsky Cathedral

Address: st. Borodinskaya, 8. Open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. Novo-Nikolsky Cathedral appeared at the beginning of the 19th century. It was built on the site of the destroyed Mozhaisk Kremlin. It is noteworthy that elements of the previous structure were used in the decoration of the cathedral.

During the Great Patriotic War, the building suffered severe damage, many of which have not yet been restored.

History buffs and connoisseurs of beautiful architecture come to Mozhaisk to admire the Orthodox Novo-Nikolsky Cathedral, made in the Russian Gothic style.

Chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker of Mozhaisk

Address: Komsomolskaya Square. The opening of the chapel took place in 1998. It is located on the old trading square; small fragments of the 18th century Gostiny Dvor have also been preserved here.

Saint Nicholas of Mozhaisk, in whose honor the chapel was built, is the patron saint of the city. According to legend, in the 14th century, the image of St. Nicholas with a sword in his hand appeared before the Lithuanian army and put them to flight, thereby saving Mozhaisk and its inhabitants.

The Memorial Chapel is a popular destination for locals, tourists and honeymooners. The latter consider it a good tradition to come to St. Nicholas, as the patron saint of Mozhaisk, for a blessing.

Joachimo – Annovsky Temple

  • Address: st. Krupskaya, 6A.
  • Phone: 49638 2‑02-63.
  • Open daily from 8am to 5pm.

The Temple of Joachim and Anna is the oldest surviving religious building in the Moscow region. This church is considered part of the cathedral of the Yakimansky monastery. During Soviet times, an archive was located here. Today, a Sunday school operates in the building.

The temple is well preserved. Tourists and pilgrims come here to see the beautiful interior decoration (unfortunately, the ceiling paintings have not been preserved) and to appreciate the unusual mixture of styles that characterize the building. Here you can see a combination of classicism, baroque and pseudo-gothic.

Pre-revolutionary period

In 1277 it was first mentioned as a city, which is now considered the year of the founding of Mozhaisk. The settlement began to grow. At one time, for a better view, the forest around the fortress was cut down, which caused a gradual shallowing of the Mozhaika River, and now it is only a stream.

The first data on the population of Mozhaisk dates back to 1555, when 10,000 people lived in it. The city was captured many times, and the Polish invasion led by False Dmitry was especially devastating. In 1614, only 99 inhabitants remained in the settlement. In the 17th century, a powerful fortress was built, modeled after the Moscow Kitai-Gorod, which at one time was commanded by the famous Dmitry Pozharsky.

At the end of the 18th century, the fortress walls were dismantled due to their dilapidation, and a development plan was adopted, providing for a division into blocks of a regular rectangular shape. In 1800, the population of the city of Mozhaisk was 1,736 people.

It was burned again by retreating French troops in the War of 1812. The city had to be practically rebuilt from scratch; the population recovered slowly. In 1825, only 1,645 people lived here. At the same time, industry began to develop and the first weaving and spinning factory was built. Peasants from surrounding villages began to move to the city.

Museums of Mozhaisk

Mozhaisk museums welcome tourists all year round.

Visitors can get acquainted with the life of a peasant family at the beginning of the 19th century. The museum exhibits include examples of peasant folk art, tools of their labor, and interior details.

Thematic events are held in the military-historical settlement of Doronino (Mozhaisk)

The main building on the museum’s territory is a pre-war wooden hut with benches, a Russian stove and other attributes of peasant housing. An important feature is that the entire exhibition is interactive, that is, any objects presented here can be picked up, examined, and photographed.

Museum-reserve "Borodino Field"

An acquaintance with Mozhaisk would not be complete without a visit to the Borodino Field military-historical museum-reserve.

It was created back in 1839 and covers an area of more than 109 km2. The famous Battle of Borodino between Kutuzov’s army and the troops of Napoleon Bonaparte took place in this place in August 1812. And in October 1941, the defense line passed there during the German offensive on Moscow.

The museum-reserve includes:

  • main building;
  • palace and park ensemble;
  • Spaso-Borodinsky Monastery;
  • Abbess Maria's house.

Spaso-Borodinsky Monastery

On the site of the main museum building in the center of the field, there was previously a small gatehouse built on the orders of Nicholas I. Two war veterans looked after the main monument and Bagration’s burial place. The house contained a map of the Borodino field and items found on the battlefield.

The main monument to Russian soldiers was erected with the participation of Prince Alexander Nikolaevich, who laid the first stone. True, the first monument was destroyed in 1932, but later it was restored. The same materials were used - bronze with gilding and cast iron.

At Borodino Field, visitors get acquainted with:

  • monument to Kutuzov;
  • burials of Bagration and Tatishchev;
  • mass graves, burials of Russian officers;
  • artillery fortifications: Shevardinsky redoubt, Raevsky battery;
  • bots, trenches, anti-tank ditches;
  • current exhibitions.

There are 50 memorials on the field. It’s impossible to see it all at once. They are separated by a considerable distance. Their location is shown on the field map.

The first Sunday of September is the annual day of the Borodin Day holiday with colorful shows. On them, viewers can imagine the events of those days, seeing soldiers dressed in Russian and French uniforms, hussars on horseback and hearing the roar of cannons.

Monuments in Mozhaisk

Mozhaisk, whose sights are related to the city's military past, is transformed in May - at this time traditional festive events dedicated to Victory Day take place.

Monument to WWII soldiers

Address: Oktyabrskaya Square. The sculpture of the liberating warrior is located in the central city square. The monument was created in memory of the 50 thousand officers and soldiers who participated and died in the liberation of the Mozhaisk region from the fascist invaders. Behind the monument is the Glory Memorial.

A visit to the memorial with a stop at the sculpture of the Soldier-Liberator to express gratitude and respect to the defenders of the city has become a tradition for local residents and tourists.

Airplane-monument "Yak-3"

Address: Minskoe highway 96 km. The monument was erected at the 96th kilometer of the M1 federal highway, before the turn to Mozhaisk. It is a stele with a Yak-3 aircraft installed on it. The monument was opened in 1966 in honor of the defenders of the Moscow sky.

According to historians, aircraft of this brand did not directly participate in the battle for Moscow; they appeared only in 1943. At the time of installation of the stele, there were no true participants in the battle (Yak-1) left in good condition. Opposite the monument is the Mozhaisk flying club, which provides services for organizing air tours and teaching aerobatic skills.

Monument to military signalmen

Address: Komsomolskaya Square.

The monument to military signalmen is unique, as it is the only monument of its kind. It was installed in 2005 as a sign of gratitude and respect to more than a million signalmen who, during the war, at the risk of their own lives, were engaged in ensuring communications for all allied forces. Made in the form of a stylized insignia of the Signal Corps.

General description[edit]

Objectively

Regional center of the Moscow region. The distance from Moscow to Mozhaisk is approximately 110 km in a westerly direction. On the rivers Moscow and Mozhaika. Population – 30 thousand people.

Subjectively

Nothing remains from the times of the once powerful Mozhaisk principality. The most significant inside the city is the Ferapontov Luzhetsky Monastery and Cathedral Hill with two cathedrals.

Near Mozhaisk there is such a miracle that does not exist anywhere else. In the fields along the road to the west there are about 50 monuments of tsarist times - made of granite and cast iron, with crosses, eagles, crowns, cannons and names of regiments. Honest monuments to grateful descendants of the heroes of a just and victorious war.

One day is enough for Mozhaisk.

Architectural structures in Mozhaisk

In the second half of the 20th century, active construction began in the city, new residential areas and public facilities appeared. However, some architectural structures that have historical value have been preserved. An example is the Rolle estate.

City estate of Khlebnikov-Rolle

Address: st. Red Partisans, 15/17. The Rolle estate was built on one of the city streets at the beginning of the 20th century. Its first owner was the merchant Leonty Vladimirovich Rolle. According to the owner's instructions, the building was designed in Art Nouveau style. Around the main house there was a large terrace from which there was access to the garden.

Unfortunately, due to the lack of proper funding, there is practically no maintenance for the mansion and surrounding areas. This leads to the inevitable destruction of the building. You won’t be able to walk through the garden and enter the house, but any traveler can see it from the street and have time to capture this piece of history.

Porechye estate (or former estate of the Uvarovs)

  • Address: Mozhaisky district, rural settlement Poretskoye, village Porechye.
  • Phone: 495 992‑99-32.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 17:15.

The first mentions of the Porechye estate were found in scribe books of the 16th century. The final architectural appearance was formed only in the 19th century, when the daughter of Count Razumovsky and her husband Count Uvarova became the owners. The estate was considered rich, with many valuable works of art stored in the main house.

Most of them were transferred to Moscow museums. The Uvarov estate was badly damaged during the war. In the 70s of the 20th century, the external and internal appearance was partially restored. Currently, free access for tourists, unfortunately, is closed, as there is a sanatorium on the territory.

Goretovo Estate

Address: Mozhaisk urban district, Goretovo village, Bestuzhevo. The Goretovo estate complex is located 20 km from Mozhaisk. This is a noble estate of the 18th century. Part of the territory was flooded during the construction of the Mozhaisk reservoir. On the remaining plot of land, some fragments of the former estate have been preserved - a two-story outbuilding, a church and a small park.

Entry and passage into the village is free, however, unfortunately, it will not be possible to inspect the two-story house - it has passed into private ownership. Lovers of quiet and peaceful walks will appreciate the excellent view of the Mozhaisk Reservoir, which is unofficially called the Mozhaisk Sea.

Mozhaisk Sea

Address: village of Marfin Brod (8 km northwest of Mozhaisk) Getting there: by car (21 minutes travel)

The largest reservoir in the Moscow region, called the Mozhaisk Sea because of its size, was built in 1960 near the source of the Moscow River. Through this reservoir, the river flow is regulated and the possibility of floods in the capital is eliminated.

For fishermen, the reservoir has become a real paradise. Even a novice fisherman can catch bream, carp, pike perch and eel here.

Natural attractions of Mozhaisk

Most of the natural attractions are located outside the city. In Mozhaisk itself there are many squares, alleys, and park areas.

Leninsky Square

Address: Mozhaiskaya street. A small park in the city center. On its alleys there are several monuments dedicated to military signalmen and victims of repression. Along the square you can see houses with special memorial plaques about famous people who visited Mozhaisk.

Mozhaisk Reservoir

Address: Mozhaisk district. GPS coordinates: 55.6014233, 35.6614418. Clean air, the beauty of the surrounding nature, modern infrastructure - all this makes the Mozhaisk Reservoir an attractive and popular holiday destination in the Moscow region for tourists.

  • Paid fishing. The territory includes a hotel, cafe, bathhouse, and boat rental. For fishing you must have a special permit.
  • Sailing. The Yacht Club is located on the southeastern shore of the Mozhaisk Reservoir. Vacationers can rent boats and catamarans.

Park of Culture and Recreation of Russian-Belarusian Friendship

  • Address: st. Klementyevskaya.
  • Opening hours: Every day, around the clock.

The park's alleys run along the banks of the Moscow River. From the embankment you can see the Church of Elijah the Prophet. An Admiralty anchor is installed at the entrance to the park - this is a gift to sailors living in the Moscow region from veterans of the Navy of the Republic of Belarus. The park's comfortable paths and artificial lighting make it attractive for walking and playing sports.

Holy Well of Ferapont

Usually children visit religious attractions without much enthusiasm, but the complex “Holy Well of Ferapont the Wonderworker of Mozhaisk” will not leave anyone indifferent. The complex includes:

  • fonts where everyone can plunge into healing moisture (female and male);
  • a small chapel and belfry;
  • food stalls with trading stalls;
  • a source where you can get holy water.

Local residents believe that the holy spring was excavated by Ferapont Belozersky himself in 1408. Moreover, this well is the second, and there are three in total. The construction of Feropont began at the age of 70, and he died at the age of 90. At first, the residents themselves looked after the source, but in 2005 it was burned down, and everything had to be rebuilt. Currently, the source is a landmark of the area, so the authorities do not leave the sacred place without attention.

The chapel is part of a complex that is fenced, so you can’t get into it at night
