In small, cozy Syzran, tourists enjoy peace, a pleasant flat landscape and an abundance of attractions - from churches and museums to natural monuments. A trip here for many becomes a real return to origins: the smooth flow of the Volga, the high sky, the onion domes, the peaceful atmosphere of the Russian merchant city - all this puts you in a peaceful mood.

Until 2010, Syzran had the status of a historical settlement in Russia; there are almost 150 cultural and architectural monuments on its territory.

By plane

Syzran does not have its own air gates, but 150-170 km from the city there are two airports in Ulyanovsk and one in Samara.
Pobeda and Rusline fly from Moscow’s Vnukovo to Ulyanovsk and Samara, and Aeroflot and UTair from Sheremetyevo. The minimum cost of a round-trip ticket is 5400 RUB to Ulyanovsk and 6500 RUB to Samara. Direct flights from St. Petersburg Pulkovo depart twice a week to Ulyanovsk and daily to Samara. The price of a round-trip flight in both directions is from 16,000 RUB.

From airports to Syzran

To get from Ulyanovsk airport to Syzran, you first need to get to the railway station by minibus No. 91 (30 minutes journey) or taxi, and then transfer to the train to Syzran, which will take 3-4 hours on the road.

Those who fly to Samara airport also need to first be at the station. To get there by public transport, you will first have to take bus No. 78, and then at the “Prospekt Kirova” stop change to bus No. 50. Trains from Samara to your destination run several times a day and take 3.5 hours; You can get there by bus from the Central Bus Station (Aurora St., 207) in 3 hours.

A taxi ride from both airports to Syzran lasts about 2 hours and costs 2500-3000 RUB if you book a car in advance.

All this information is provided within the walls of the Syzran Museum of Local Lore, the exhibitions of which are stored in an ancient building built in the spirit of the Middle Ages - the house with the store of the merchant N. A. Lednev.

The museum has an extensive collection of Russian samovars and national costumes of the Volga peoples who lived in the Samara region. It hosts traveling exhibitions of paintings and decorative arts throughout the year.

Transport

Public transport in Syzran - buses and commercial Gazelles. The stops are located close to each other, and the routes cover the entire city. However, for sightseeing you can do without transport, since many of them are close to each other.

A taxi ride around the city costs only 100 RUB, so it is a very convenient way to get around.

There is no city bike rental in Syzran, but many private companies rent bikes for periods from 1 hour to several days.

Syzran Kremlin

Address: Kremlin Hill

This is one of the main city attractions, which is located at the confluence of the Volga, Syzranka and Crimea rivers. It is the only building of its kind in the Samara region.

The first mention of Syzran dates back to 1683, when Prince Grigory Afanasyevich Kozlovsky began to build a fortress here by order of Tsar Peter Alekseevich (Peter I). The Kremlin was built to strengthen the southern limb of the Samara Luka. In the old days there were five towers here, but the wooden ones were not preserved, only the stone Spasskaya Tower remained.

In 1774, Syzran and its Kremlin were taken by storm by the troops of Emelyan Pugachev. The building was not seriously damaged in the battle.

On the territory of the Kremlin there is another example of ancient Russian architecture - the Church of the Nativity of Christ, and nearby there is a war memorial erected in honor of soldiers who died in local wars.

What to bring

Most often, delicious edible gifts are brought from Syzran. First of all, of course, tomatoes, which have become a kind of symbol of the city; it even hosts the Syzran Tomato festival. The varieties “Syzran rose”, “Syzran early ripening”, tomatoes with touching names “From Grandma Tony” and “From Grandma Dasha” and with the funny one “Syzran dulka (pipochka)” are especially valued. You can bring seeds to your gardening friends, and the rest - local specialties: tomato juice and tomato jam. As well as peaches and grapes growing at the Kashpirsky spring, fish from a local plant and the “Spider Web” cake - they say that it is the most delicious here.

For lovers of traditional souvenirs, local shops sell magnets, mugs, thimbles, postcards and other memorable products.

Sizran

Where to go, what to see

Sergei Zatsarinny, a local historian and blogger who knows everything and a little more about Syzran, agreed to be our guide around Syzran. Having lived in the “Petrine city” his entire adult life, Zatsarinny, with his eyes closed, will point out which house has a paneled door, and where it is better to stand in order to see the monument from the most attractive angle.

It is best, according to Sergei, to start getting acquainted with the city from the Samarskaya Luka, an observation deck where the monument to the first Komsomol May Day stands. While we are driving to the place, the guide says that today Syzran is no longer the same - everything that was built beautifully after the fire was demolished. And what remains is in shabby condition.

The road runs past the Zasyzran district, the tomato mecca of Syzran. Among the different tomatoes for which the city is famous, it is worth highlighting a special variety - “Syzran rose”. Syzran rose is a delicious tomato (locals call the variety tomato - in the feminine gender), but alas, due to its thin skin it is poorly transportable and therefore less and less popular. Therefore, today in the markets you can easily run into fakes - they sell similar-looking tomatoes, passing them off as “roses”.

First May Day sign

“This is the best place to view Syzran,” says our guide as we climb onto the observation deck. — At the end of the 18th century, he was chosen by the poet Ivan Dmitriev - now he is known mainly to literary scholars, but in those days he claimed to be the Russian poet No. 1 (the song “The Blue Dove Moans” broke all records, remaining in the songbooks for almost two centuries). This is while Derzhavin is alive!

It was while walking in the place where the Komsomol May Day monument now stands and admiring the panorama that Dmitriev wrote his best works, for example, the famous poem “To the Volga.” What he told about in his memoirs.

From the observation point, which locals call the Sign of the First May Day in honor of the monument erected here, you can clearly see the famous Ascension Monastery and the Fedorov Church of the Icon of the Mother of God located in it. One of the oldest buildings in Syzran, built in 1738, it is now under restoration - some money has been allocated. They say that many people are buried there, and every now and then builders come across crypts. A few years ago, for example, the burial place of the first Simbirsk bishop was discovered.

Foreigners who were lucky enough to visit the Syzran hydroelectric power station are astonished: they don’t even have such old instruments in their museums, but in Syzran people still work on them!

If you turn around, you can see the famous Syzran hydroelectric power station, born in 1929. Its beauty is that since then not a single bolt has been changed inside - the same appliances (working!), the same tiles on the floor, furniture, leaflets and posters on the walls. The most natural museum. Those few foreigners who were lucky enough to visit inside are astonished: they don’t even have such old devices in museums, but in Syzran people still work on them.

Unfortunately, getting to the hydroelectric power station is not easy. You need to make an agreement in advance and not for an individual visit, but for a whole group.

Interiors of the Syzran hydroelectric power station, photo by Vadim Kondratyev

The feeling of what you see is spoiled only by the broken bottles crunching under your feet. Syzran is not famous for its cleanliness anyway, but locals still like to hang out here, and some newlyweds break glass for good luck.

There is a project for the reconstruction of this beautiful place, and it is hoped that it will one day be realized. In the meantime, condoms and used syringes are removed from the site every year.

Posting a “selfie” from the observation deck is not difficult. The mobile Internet speed here is quite sufficient for this: about 30 Mbit/s in 4G and about 3 Mbit/s in 3G.

"Peter"

Today, “Syzran Peter” (the western part of Syzran) has almost completely lost its beauty - there is not a single block where once beautiful pieces of wood have not been demolished and block houses have been built, violating the unique historical buildings. I can’t even believe that just 10 years ago it was possible to calmly shoot a movie here about the beginning of the 20th century without additional scenery. However, something interesting, for the sake of which it is worth forgetting about fear (the area is not the calmest), remains here.

For example, there are several interesting buildings next to the Timiryazevsky Garden on the side of Plekhanov Street. Red brick house built in 1914, former Higher Primary School . Later there was a music school in the building, and even later it was simply abandoned. Local authorities don’t know what to do with it and how to use it. So it stands, to the delight of the homeless.

Behind the music school on Razrezny Lane, a very beautiful carved residential building is growing out of the ground. We highly recommend photographing it - it's worth it. But very close to it is another house, also made of wood, but the carvings and so on were “sewn” into the siding.

In general, plastic windows decorate almost every second old house in Syzran - they spoil the beauty. But what can you do? The owner is a gentleman.

All that remains of the gorgeous Timiryazevsky Garden is its name. A dilapidated abandoned cinema, the remains of a fountain and unkempt greenery indicate that this was once a very beautiful place. Now it’s scary to come here - it’s all overgrown and desolate. The city planned to develop a garden, but they abandoned this idea due to lack of communications.

Uritsky Street - just take a walk, turning onto neighboring Plekhanov and Internatsionalnaya. Here and there you come across houses with carvings, which are nice to look at.

The pre-revolutionary newspaper “Syzran Courier” described a case of a poltergeist in one of the houses on what is now Vatutina Street . Like, there was noise and commotion in the apartment, things started flying. The neighbors called the police, the police got scared and retreated. Then, it seems, everything just calmed down. This house still stands today.

At the intersection of Internatsionalnaya and Uritsky streets stands the famous Belov House - the mansion of the fishing merchant Konstantin Belov. After the Great Patriotic War, a children's hospital was located here, and now it is a sanitary and bacteriological laboratory. The house is notable for its facade with Rococo style decoration, part of which has been lost today. Among other decorations there were also angels that fell off.

Internatsionalnaya itself you can gaze at the abandoned mill of the merchant Tsvetkov. More precisely, what was left of it - many buildings managed to be demolished. This is a rare and therefore valuable example of industrial architecture. Rumor has it that when the buildings were being demolished, they came across an underground passage and treasure. Many Old Believers lived in this area, and underground passages and secret cellars are constantly encountered.

Right next to the mill there is a house with buildings of Prokopiy Bezvodin, a famous Old Believer printer who ran an underground printing house. And nearby there is a well-known pharmacy in the city. A few years ago, the interior of 1908 was preserved; people went there as if they were going to a museum. Inside there was an old clock hanging, there were wooden boxes with porcelain tablets and inscriptions in Latin, tiles on the floor... Now the pharmacy is being restored, and for some reason the entire interior has been removed. So, alas, there is nothing to see.

Only in 1917 were the “priestesses of love” expelled from brothels, with the courtesy of free treatment in the city hospital.

If you have a lot of time and want to look not only at houses of architectural value, you can walk along International Street to Emelyanovskaya . There are brothels there, which after the fire of 1906 were “evicted” out of sight, out of mind, onto what was then Vsekhvyatskaya Street. Needless to say, local residents were not happy about this turn of events and regularly wrote complaints, vividly describing the everyday life of the Red Light District.

Only in 1917 were the “priestesses of love” expelled from brothels, with the courtesy of free treatment in the city hospital. The street was renamed, and the houses were inhabited by ordinary people - they still stand to this day.

There is also something to see on Frunze - a lot of houses with beautiful, in some places even fully intact, carvings. Just walk here carefully - the sidewalk is full of holes and potholes, it’s easy to trip if you stare at the platband.

In the area of Syzran "Peter", according to MTS reports, there is the highest network load and the highest traffic consumption. For local residents, mobile Internet is a complete replacement for wired Internet. In the evening hours, the load on the network is especially high, which affects speed. However, the Internet speed is quite enough to post your impressions of the “one-story” Syzran on Facebook online.

Kremlin

It’s worth noting right away that there is no Kremlin as such in Syzran; this is a toponymic concept. Today there are two buildings here - the Spasskaya Tower , which was first a gate tower, and then turned into the belfry of the Nativity Cathedral , which, in fact, is the second building.

In general, here, on the Kremlin hill, is the main city square. From here there is a beautiful view of the Volga and the Syzranka River flowing into it. And in the evening, when the sunset, the views are very stunning.

There is a curious story connected with the cathedral: it was consecrated under Emperor John Antonovich at the end of 1741. Almost immediately the emperor was overthrown and forbidden to be mentioned. We had to redo the temple cross, where it is written that the cathedral was consecrated during the reign of John Antonovich. As a result, the cross was “made” in the name of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna.

In 2007, archaeologists worked near the altar of the cathedral. They found a crypt with the burial of a priest, and under it - an earlier burial, about which, alas, they could not say anything meaningful.

Here, near the Kremlin, there is a memorial to those who died in the Great Patriotic War - the remains of soldiers who died in Syzran hospitals were transferred here 30 years ago from the city cemetery. A few months ago, an obelisk appeared here in memory of those killed in undeclared wars and conflicts.

Locals say that for many years there was a boulder stone on which it was written that “a monument to a woman-mother will be erected here.” It has long become local folklore: everyone knew that there would never be a monument to Mother here, and they called the stone “dinosaur shit.” Then the boulder was removed, but the promised monument still did not exist.

The same stone

Below the Kremlin hill you can see several tacky concrete structures - a “monument” to the budget billions allocated several years ago for the improvement of the embankment. Which, it seems, does not exist to this day.

As for the bell tower, it is interesting because the bells ring whenever they want. The belfry belongs to the local history museum, not the church, and workers ring bells in honor of the newlyweds. Some uninformed people scold the local priest for this, but the priest is not to blame.

In 2000, Putin came to Syzran and, of course, went to see the Kremlin. Knowledgeable locals remember his visit with a chuckle.

— August, evening, drunken youth are running around in the bushes. And Putin goes like this. They saw the president and thought it was crazy. And then they started shouting: “Manka, uh, Putin is here, come here, let’s take a photo!”

— President Putin is here with me! “Now I’ll call the police and they’ll take you and your Putin away!”

Descending from the Kremlin to the Kazan Cathedral, Vladimir Vladimirovich smelled a nearby bakery (and today the smell of sweet bakery haunts everyone who passes by). I wanted to see what was there and how. We approached the gate with our retinue and the Syzran mayor. The mayor knocks: “Open up!” And the watchman didn’t believe in anything - he didn’t believe in Putin.

— President Putin is here with me! - the mayor shouts.

“Now I’ll call the police and they’ll take you and your Putin away!” - answers the irritated watchman.

- Well, at least look out the window!

The watchman looked out the window, was stunned and opened all the doors.

The President liked everything at the bakery, especially the “vanilla twist.” These delicious buns were then called “Putin’s” for a long time.

If the president decides to visit the Syzran Kremlin again, and some lucky passer-by captures him on his phone, then the photo will appear on the Internet in just a couple of minutes. The speed of the MTS mobile Internet near the Spasskaya Tower is about 10 Mbit/s in 4G and about 5 Mbit/s in 3G.

Kazan Cathedral and Sovetskaya Street

Kazan Cathedral , built in 1872 and located below the Spasskaya Tower, is very, simply very beautiful - both inside and outside. We won’t bore you with its history – just be sure to visit it.

If you go around the cathedral and go along Dostoevsky Lane, you will come to the Museum of Local Lore , it is on the right. Entrance – 50 rubles per nose.

Not farther along, on the left, there will be a very nice new building - the building of the Passage shopping center. Even the sign of the fruit and vegetable store located there is beautifully stylized to match the overall look.

After walking around the area, it makes sense to walk to the main street of Syzran - Sovetskaya . There are a lot of merchant mansions here in the Art Nouveau style, each more beautiful than the other.

Sovetskaya Street is three kilometers long, and all these kilometers you will be looking up at the architecture. Among the many elegant houses with interesting details, the Lednev guest yard, the house of the Volgushev brothers, the Syromyatnikov house, and the trading house of the merchant Permyakova stand out.

Particular attention should be paid to the estate of the merchant Sterlyadkin (Sovetskaya, 66). The author of the Art Nouveau masterpiece with a very curious shell-shaped balcony supported by sculpted youthful figures is not known for certain, but some local historians attribute it to Fyodor Shekhtel.

Let us allow ourselves to be moved and declare to the entire Soviet Union: it is not a sin to come to this registry office from Samara to get married.

Today the registry office is located here, and if you look inside, you will see partially preserved interiors. Let us allow ourselves to be moved and declare to the entire Soviet Union: it is not a sin to come to this registry office from Samara to get married.

From Sovetskaya Street you can turn into back streets, for example, along Dostoevsky Lane to Ulyanovskaya . Church of the Exaltation of the Cross , built in 1909 and now abandoned, is worth a look here

From Ulyanovskaya it is easy to go to Babushkina Street, 10 . This is not a residential building, as it might seem, but a Synagogue built in 1911. Of course, in its heyday the building looked different - today the broken glass, the built-on top and knocked down symbols bear little resemblance to a shrine. The house nearby is the house of a Jewish school teacher. It is distinguished by carvings that are noticeably different from those decorating the rest of the houses.

Nearby is the Kristalinsky house - Ostrovsky’s family lived here and the great composer spent his childhood years. The once beautiful two-story house is now deprived of its protective status and seems to be falling apart right before our eyes. The first floor is “moving”, the plastic windows in the old carved frames look ridiculous. The picture is sad, but worth seeing - in Syzran everything valuable somehow quickly disappears, you have to be in time.

The speed of the MTS mobile Internet on Sovetskaya in 4G is about 50 Mbit/s - quite enough to download a movie in HD quality in a couple of minutes (if you suddenly get bored) or conduct a video report of your walk online. 3G speed is 8 Mbit/s.

Cuisine and restaurants of Syzran

The city has several dozen cafes serving Russian, European or Japanese dishes. There are no restaurants serving Volga cuisine in Syzran, but you can try local snacks in almost every establishment. Hearty and inexpensive lunches are served at the Topo Pocco steakhouse or at the U Kremlin cafe, and to try original desserts, you should check out the Vintage and White Cat coffee shops. There is a lot of fast food in the city: from the ubiquitous McDonald's to pancake and pie shops.

Among the specialties that deserve attention are tomatoes and all kinds of preparations made from them, Volga river fish, which is prepared in different ways: from fish soup to cutlets, from drying to baking.

The traditional dish of the region is fish solyanka, which is cooked with stewed cabbage and seasoned with kvass.

Dinner in a restaurant with a glass of wine costs 800 RUB per person, a snack in a cafe costs 250 RUB per person.

What else to do in Syzran

Among the places where you can take a walk, Dima names the hotel complex behind the railway bridge (drive to the left of the Kremlin). More precisely, not the complex itself, but an alley near it - with benches and lanterns. It seems that they are going to open a water park here - something the Syzran residents, deprived of entertainment, will rejoice at.

Speaking of entertainment. You are unlikely to go to the cinema, but know that there is only one here - in entertainment.

But you can very well get to the main Syzran holiday - the annual Syzran Tomato . It is celebrated at the end of August on a grand scale: people dress up in red, tomatoes of various shapes and sizes are sold everywhere, and many, many tomato dishes - from cake to Pomodorovka tincture.

Also in Syzran at the end of September there is a youth festival “Rock over Kubra”. Dmitry grins when he talks about him. The idea is simple: enthusiastic musicians gather on the banks of the Kubra River, build a stage and play rock. And they drink a lot, no matter what.

And so, in general, there are no big cultural events happening in the city. It’s been a year now that you can’t even go to the theater – it’s closed for renovations. The troupe gives performances somewhere, but it’s not the same.

There are concerts, but rarely good ones. The discos are purely provincial... However, few people know that in Syzran at 178 Internatsionalnaya there is a private gallery with paintings by local artists. Not only tourists, but also local people can visit here.

Private gallery

The gallery was opened and filled by local businessman Alexander Makarov, a lover of painting and all things beautiful. A variety of paintings by a variety of Syzran artists are collected here. Sergei Zatsarinny praises many of them and says that Syzran artists are better than Samara ones.

To get into the gallery, you need to tell the guard at the entrance that you are there. Go up to the second floor and meet... with the artists. The peculiarity of the gallery is that on Saturday , from 10 to 16 hours , the authors of their paintings are on duty here, who will gladly and completely free of charge give you a tour and tell you everything they know about the paintings and artists. At the same time, they will be very modest when you get to their work.

The paintings are very different, painted in different styles. From the Volga region nature to the view of rainy Prague. It is worth highlighting the artist David Brook - on the walls hang his sketches of the performances that the Syzran Drama Theater staged 40 years ago. Impressive.

Alexander Makarov literally collected some paintings from basements and attics - they would just gather dust, no one needed. The main exhibition is not for sale, but there is a room on the third floor from which you can take home your favorite masterpiece.

Now, next to the local history museum, Makarov is building a real gallery where paintings will beautifully hang and exhibitions will be held. He says it will open next year. And it will also be free.

Entertainment and attractions of Syzran

Historical buildings and religious buildings, natural monuments and museums - in small Syzran tourists will find unexpectedly many attractions. But the main thing is the atmosphere of the Volga merchant city of the 19th century, preserved from ancient times.

Tourists definitely go to the monasteries: the ancient Voznesensky, which is considered the same age as Syzran, and Kashpirsky - it is famous for its spring, which gives miraculous healings. In the center of the city stands the majestic Kazan Cathedral, one of the main symbols of the region.

In the museum of the icon painting school (Sovetskaya St., 9) you can see ancient and modern works of masters and buy an icon.

From a historical point of view, the Syzran Kremlin with its snow-white Spasskaya Tower and the Local Lore Museum inside is considered particularly striking. An interesting art collection is located in the City Exhibition Hall in the Chernukhin mansion (Smolina St., 12). In terms of architectural appearance, it is worth paying attention to the tiny wooden Markushina House and the Sterlyadkin Mansion in the Art Nouveau style. They are located on Sovetskaya Street, where a harmonious ensemble of buildings is still preserved.

Theater life in the city began in the 19th century and has not stopped to this day. Many tourists enjoy attending performances at the drama theatre, which has been operating for over 100 years and regularly becomes the venue for the Theater Time festival.

Those who want to be closer to nature can go to the Arboretum, located on the Saratov highway, in the southern part of Syzran. More than 100 species of trees, bushes and herbs grow on an area of 8 hectares, and true peace reigns. In the vicinity of the city there is a unique natural monument - the Kashpirsky outcrops of Jurassic and Cretaceous deposits, where fossils of ichthyosaurs, paleosaurs and other ancient creatures were discovered.

general information

The people of Syzran proudly call their city “Petrovsky City with the Kremlin.” And they’re not lying: the fortress on the Volga was founded by governor Grigory Kozlovsky according to one of the earliest decrees of Peter Alekseevich back in 1683.

Despite the fact that time has left only two buildings from the Kremlin (the Kremlin tower and the belfry), built already in the 18th century, the city residents have something to be proud of.

The city is located on the right bank of the Volga, in the place where the Syzranka River flows into it. It is from here, according to one version, that the name of the city came (“syzran” - from the Tatar “syza” - “ravine”).

In 1906, Syzran was almost completely destroyed by fire, and the city was rebuilt. Basically, they built stone houses and merchant mansions - today you can admire them on the main street of Syzran Sovetskaya.

The population of Syzran is 175,000 people, the distance from Samara is 200 kilometers.

Temples and churches

Azan Mosque

Address: st. Zhukovsky Phone: , 8 (927) 022‑88-66 Website: https://azan-syzran.ru Opening hours: 09:00 – 08:00 Mon-Sun

The Azan Mosque (the name comes from the Arabic word meaning a call to prayer), which took more than 10 years to build, opened its doors on December 1, 2006 and became a grandiose religious building for Muslims in the Samara region. The prayer room can accommodate up to 400 people, and the height of the building together with the dome reaches twenty-seven meters. Additionally, there are premises for a women's chapel and a Sunday school for children.

Anyone can visit the mosque, even if they are not a devout Muslim. But tourists must follow a number of strict regulations. This is especially true for women: clothing should completely cover the entire body, except for the face and hands, and be of discreet, calm shades. A headdress that completely covers the hair is required. Trousers and makeup are also prohibited.

If a tourist’s clothing does not fully meet the requirements, before visiting the mosque she must take a long skirt and a scarf, which are given at the entrance to Azan.

Men should also dress as closely as possible, but they do not need a hat. According to the rules, you should enter the mosque with your right foot, and leave the building with your left. Shoes are usually removed and left at the entrance.

The Azan Mosque is famous for its spectacular services during the main Muslim holidays, for example, Ramadan, when people professing Islam come to this place not only from Syzran and the Samara region, but also from other regions. Holidays for children are also organized.

Thus, at the beginning of July, the “Farewell to Ramadan” performance is usually held, including competitions, gifts and treats for children. Children's parties are usually attended by guests of honor. In 2022, it was the Mufti of the Samara region, Talip-hazrat Yarullin, who congratulated the younger generation and gave a farewell speech.

Church of Elijah the Prophet

Address: st. International, 12 Phone: , Website: https://syzran-ilii.cerkov.ru Opening hours: 08:00 – 09:30 daily

Initially, at the end of the 15th century, a wooden church was erected on this site on the initiative of three Syzran merchants - Kuropatkin, Pavlyshin and Vandyshev. At that time, in the Middle Volga region there were many Cossacks and soldiers who arrived from other lands and insisted on building a temple for offering prayers. At their request, Syzran merchants began building a church in honor of the prophet Elijah. Later, the descendants of these same townspeople built a stone church in 1776.

After the revolution, the church did not cease to function, but was robbed several times during the Soviet era. In 1940 the church was closed and rebuilt in its building. In 1993, the building was again returned to the Orthodox Church.

Nowadays it is a functioning church, and there is a Sunday school attached to it.

For connoisseurs of architectural monuments

The former merchant city has well preserved its heritage from past centuries. Everything here evokes an amazing feeling of regularity, solidity, suspended time. As a historical settlement, Syzran boasts interesting buildings, and most of them are located either on the main street of the city (Sovetskaya Street) or in close proximity to it. Among the most notable:

Syzran Kremlin

The only Kremlin in the entire Samara region. You need to look for it on the Kremlin Hill. Initially, the building was wooden and had 4 wooden and 1 stone towers. Today, only the Spasskaya Tower made of stone has survived, inside which a museum has been created. Here you can also see a religious building from the early 18th century - the Church of the Nativity (1717). The twenty-seven-meter tower is especially interesting with its internal hipped vault. There is a belfry at the top, and as early as 11 am you can hear bell concerts.

Kazan Cathedral

The building was founded in 1866 on the site of the dismantled Kazan Church. After 14 years, specially invited Moscow painters painted the interior with sacred images and beautiful ornamental decorations. After another 2 years, they began to build a bell tower and an extension for the refectory. Today, despite all the difficult times of the war years of World War II, this is the main temple of Syzran, which attracts with its grandeur and beauty, uniting people in their faith and kindness.

Drama Theater named after. A. Tolstoy

It began in the 1870s, when a summer theater with the beautiful name “Hermitage” was built with the money of the merchant Ivan Sobolekov, where, in fact, various productions by famous directors of those years were brought. The official opening of the drama theater took place in October 1918, and actor Gleb Rostov became its first artistic director. Initially, the repertoire was dominated by classics, especially the works of A. N. Tolstoy. The theater received the name of the Russian writer only in 1983. For the last 20 years, the theater troupe has been active participants in international projects, but they also manage to win over local lovers of this genre of art.

Ascension Monastery

It was founded in 1685, a little later than the Syzran fortress. Half a century later, the Stone Church of the Ascension of the Lord was built. But in 1855 it was renamed, and a high name was given to the new building. In 1928, the Ascension Monastery was closed and only after 68 years, in June 1996, its activities were resumed. Urban planning ensemble of Sovetskaya Street

This is where the real historical part of the city center is! Bolshaya Street was once an unpaved road with sidewalks made of thick boards. Vegetation, fenced with poles, occasionally flashed along the local structures. The turn of the 19th and 20th centuries passes. - and this street becomes the central one. It is changing according to the spirit of the times, turning into the center of business and social city life. The architecture of the buildings is distinguished by a variety of styles: classic in the First Women's Gymnasium and the Zemstvo Assembly, eclecticism in the public bank and the houses of merchants S.I. Myasnikov and Syromyatnikov, modern in the Sterlyadkin mansion. Now all these houses are classified as architectural monuments of the 20th century.

Syzran hydroelectric power station

The station was recognized as a historical and architectural monument. This is the first powerful hydropower station in the Volga region. It began work in 1929, as part of the activities of GOELRO. Now this is the only hydraulic structure from the beginning of the GOELRO plan that has still been preserved in its original form. The station’s reservoir is a favorite place for citizens and guests of Syzran (to relax and have fun), and in the fall it serves as a good refuge for waterfowl.
