The city of metallurgists is what Cherepovets is called, since many industrial plants and factories in Russia are concentrated in it. If you look at the city from space, you can estimate the real size of the industrial zone, which is almost as large as the size of the city itself.
This large city is located at the intersection of the country's main transport routes and has access to five seas. Cherepovets, although not the capital of the region, has a larger area and population than Vologda itself.
Where to go from Cherepovets, if you have time - in a complete overview of the attractions of the cities of the Vologda region.
Resurrection Cathedral
Address: Sovetsky Prospekt, 1 Telephone: Website: https://www.sobor-cherepovets.ru/ Opening hours: 07:30 – 20:00 Mon-Fri, 06:00 – 20:00 weekends and holidays Cost: Free admission
The Resurrection Cathedral is the oldest building in the city and a recognized symbol of Cherepovets. The city itself is located at the intersection of three rivers: Sheksna, Yagorba and Serovka. At this point the Resurrection Cathedral was founded.
According to legend, one Moscow merchant was sailing in broad daylight along the Sheksna River, and suddenly the sky above him darkened and the boat ran aground. The merchant began to pray fervently and saw that from behind the mountain, in the Yagorba valley, rays of light appeared, indicating the direction of the saving path. Climbing the mountain, he was amazed by the beauty and virginity of nature. A year after its discovery, the merchant cut down a small chapel on this site, and later the Resurrection Cathedral was located on its territory.
Architecture and monuments of Cherepovets
Among all the wonderful things that travelers will see in Cherepovets, there are several remarkable architectural and monumental objects. These buildings and monuments are interesting from both a historical and aesthetic point of view.
Railway station building
- Address: st. Zavokzalnaya, 9. Transport stop "Vokzal".
Among the attractions of Cherepovets is the railway station building, which was put into operation in the summer of 1905. According to the architectural fashion of that time, the façade of the building is decorated with decorative brick inserts. The tall stove and ventilation pipes are made of brick so skillfully that they seem like decorative elements. The building acquired its current appearance in 2000, when during reconstruction a spacious three-story portal was added to it. The authors of the project managed to successfully integrate the architectural addition into the established composition. Therefore, the updated building looks no less attractive today than before.
Monument to I. Milyutin
- Address: Milyutin Square. Transport stop "Milyutina Square".
City Mayor I.A. Milyutin did a lot to ensure that Cherepovets turned into a provincial, but prosperous city. Under him, a telephone exchange appeared in the city, and lanterns began to illuminate the streets. Largely thanks to the efforts of the mayor, changes were made to the construction project of the Northern Railway and the main line began to pass through Cherepovets. The merchant, industrialist, and philanthropist generously financed public projects. A public library, pharmacy, and printing house were built with his money. In 2005, the memory of a remarkable man was immortalized in a monumental manner in the city. Then the opening of the monument to Milyutin took place, and the square on which the bronze sculpture was installed has since been named after him.
House of Volkovs
- Address: Sovetsky Prospekt, 21. Transport stop "ChGU".
Among the surviving ancient buildings in the center of Cherepovets, a mansion that belonged to the family of a wealthy merchant Volkov stands out. Historians still cannot accurately determine the age of the building. According to information remaining in the archives, the house was built in 1837. However, a detailed study of the structure allows us to move the date of its construction back several decades. Externally, the house looks like a typical provincial merchant mansion of the early 19th century. The facade of the building is decorated with stucco and high reliefs, and an elegant attic rises above the roof of the side portal.
Art object "Globe"
- Address: Stroiteley Square, 1. Transport stop "DK Stroitel".
The city gained another colorful attraction thanks to the leadership of the Cherepovetsmetallurgstroy trust. In the fall of 2008, the enterprise celebrated its 60th anniversary, so the opening of the monument was timed to coincide with a significant date. At first glance, there is nothing unusual in the sculptural composition, consisting of several concrete pylons and a hollow ball covered with sheet bronze. However, upon closer inspection, you realize that this is not a simple ball, but... the globe of Cherepovets! On the surface of the sphere there is a general plan for the city's development! No self-respecting traveler will miss the chance to take a photo in front of such a unique art object.
Obelisk of Military Glory
- Address: intersection of Lenin and Bardin streets. Transport stop
2 months after the start of the Second World War, the 286th Red Banner Rifle Division, formed from residents of Cherepovets, Kushchuba, Sheksna and having completed the glorious path of victories in Czechoslovakia, took its first battle. Its soldiers and officers fought heroically. Eight thousand fighters of the unit were awarded orders and medals, and another nine defenders of the Fatherland were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. The monumentally immortal feat of our fellow countrymen in Cherepovets was immortalized in the spring of 1973. Then the grand opening of the obelisk of Military Glory took place on one of the city esplanades. Concrete bayonets thrown up symbolize the five branches of the Red Army. At the base of the pylons there is a bas-relief depicting the Order of the Patriotic War, placed on the St. George Ribbon. By the way, the townspeople lovingly call the memorial “Cherepovets Bayonets”.
Monument to Saints Athanasius and Theodosius of Cherepovets
Address: Sovetsky Ave., 1
Monks Afanasy and Theodosius of Cherepovets are the founders of the city, and in their honor a monument was erected on Cathedral Square, next to the Resurrection Cathedral. In 1362, they founded the Cherepovets Monastery, around which over time many small villages and trading villages appeared. The monastery acquired the status of the economic center of the area.
During the reign of Catherine II, the entire territory and population of the monastery were transferred to the treasury, and the monastery cathedral became the main one in the district city.

The legendary mayor Ivan Andreevich Milyutin lived and worked here. He led Cherepovets for 46 years and left a good memory of himself that has not faded even a century later.

Chapel of St. Philip of Irapsky in Cherepovets
Cherepovets, Sovetsky Ave., 31
This small corner chapel, built in the second half of the 19th century, belongs to the Resurrection Cathedral, but is located some distance from it. At the time when the chapel was being built, two churches were located on Voskresensky Avenue in Cherepovets not far from each other.
In Cherepovets, as elsewhere in the Vologda region, at one time there were many Orthodox shrines.
Unfortunately, most of them were badly damaged or destroyed during the Soviet years. Nevertheless, even today the churches of Cherepovets, restored or rebuilt, can be considered the main city attractions. The heart of Cherepovets is Cathedral Hill, where the Resurrection Monastery originally stood. The monastery was abolished, but what remained of it was the monastery church, which in our time is considered the most important church in the city. This is the Resurrection Cathedral, the very first stone city church. The cathedral also includes the chapel of St. Philip of Irapsky, which is located a little further along Sovetsky Prospekt. In this chapel, restored from ruins by the efforts of a private entrepreneur, the relics of the saint are kept, and every year during the religious procession the townspeople flock here to venerate them. The chapel is also famous for its amazing Byzantine-style frescoes that decorate its dome from the inside.
Today, the churches of Cherepovets, restored or rebuilt, can be considered the main city attractions.
The second church of Cherepovets is the Nativity of Christ, which stood on the site of the church consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas. In honor of the saint, the patron saint of travelers and sailors, the temple was built to resemble the ship. The temple was built at the end of the 18th century and restored two centuries later. The Church of the Nativity becomes the first church and landmark of the city, which is seen by those who arrive in Cherepovets by water.
The third temple is the newest, dedicated to the Monks Athanasius and Theodosius. It was built in Makarinskaya Grove and consecrated only in 2012. This is a beautiful and large five-domed church, which stands in one of the most beautiful and peaceful corners of Cherepovets.
There are also several chapels in the city that are worth visiting.
In particular, the chapel of the icon of the Mother of God “Life-Giving Spring” was recently converted into a small temple. This became possible due to the fact that the chapel was initially built taking into account the orientation to the cardinal points. Another attractive chapel, built in the first decade of the 20th century, stands right at the city station.
There are only 84 historical and architectural monuments in Cherepovets. Of these, 80 are municipal, and four are monuments of federal significance: these are the Vereshchagin House-Museum and the monument to Vereshchagin, the Galsky estate and the monument to Lenin on the square. Metallurgists.
The most symbolic city monument can be considered the sculpture of the city’s founders, the Monks Athanasius and Theodosius.
This is a four-meter bronze statue that depicts two monks who founded the Resurrection Monastery and, accordingly, Cherepovets itself.
Among the notable city monuments, it is worth mentioning the spherical monument to the builders of Cherepovets on Builders Square, which is otherwise called the “globe”; an ingot of the one hundred millionth ton of steel that was smelted by the city plant in 1967; a small sculpture “Assol” near house No. 78 on the street. Lenin; a sculpture dedicated to teachers and graduates of city school No. 1 who died during the Great Patriotic War (created with public donations and installed in front of the school); a memorial anti-aircraft gun on Krasnoarmeyskaya Square and the museum car of Academician Bardin behind the entrance of the metallurgical plant.

Ivan Andreevich Milyutin gave about half a century of his life to serving the city - he was the mayor, a noble merchant and public figure who brought to life the great reforms of the 60s of the 19th century. Ivan Andreevich's house was built in one of the picturesque places of Cherepovets, on a high hill above the Sheksnaya River, and was considered the main one in the city.
According to the owner, the decoration of the house had to correspond to the best metropolitan interiors in order to show Cherepovets in a favorable light and attract the attention of important people from all over the world. The museum began its work relatively recently, in 2006. Currently, the museum has an exhibition that introduces visitors to the life and work of Ivan Andreevich.

The current Church of the Nativity of Christ, consecrated in 1997, was erected on the site of a church that had existed since the end of the 19th century, demolished by the Bolsheviks. The white-stone building with an antique portico and blackened roof is the first local attraction seen by travelers arriving in Cherepovets by river transport. Tourists' eyes are immediately attracted by the three-tiered bell tower, topped with an unusually massive high spire. The highlight of the interior is the carved iconostasis, created by the hands of excellent craftsmen from the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. Pilgrims are attracted to the church by the main temple shrine - the image of the Mother of God of Kazan, painted in the 19th century.

The delightful cathedral, consecrated in 2012 in the name of the Cherepovets saints Athanasius and Theodosius, can serve as convincing proof that even an architectural remodel can become a historical landmark. The authors of the building project coped with the difficult task perfectly. They managed to create an architectural masterpiece that embodied the features of ancient Russian religious architecture and classicism. The white-stone quadrangle with five light drums topped with gilded domes looks amazing. It is similar, at the same time, to the ancient churches of Vladimir , Suzdal and the churches of St. Petersburg . The main cross of the cathedral rises 35 m above the ground. The belfry has 12 bells cast by Ural craftsmen. The bell tower itself is covered by a 14-ton tent.

In the 18th century On the banks of the Yagorba a spring was found, the waters of which, according to legend, had healing properties. Soon a carved arch was built over the key, and a small chapel near it. The townspeople revered the shrine and annually held Friday religious processions to it on Bright Week. Everything changed with the coming to power of militant atheists. The Bolsheviks first closed the religious building and then used it for economic needs. The building gradually fell into disrepair and collapsed. A neglected wasteland has formed on the site of the shrine. Only at the turn of the century, through the efforts of an initiative group, the revival of the cult object began. By 2014, work on the construction of a new chapel and improvement of the surrounding area was completed. Today, religious processions are again held to a small temple dedicated to the Holy Mother of God.

Within the boundaries of present-day Cherepovets in the 18th century there was the village of Rozhdestvenskoye, in which the landowner N.D. Panfilov, together with his parishioners, built a temple to replace the old wooden church. During Soviet times, the temple was closed and subsequently dismantled and destroyed by fire. The burnt ruins stood in the city until 1991, when a prayer service was held and the foundation for a new church building was laid.
The building design was recreated with the help of the archives of the Cherepovets Museum Association. Currently, in the newly operating Church of the Nativity of Christ, the relics of various saints and a particle of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord are presented.

During the production of individual bridge structures, which were manufactured at factories in Volgograd, it was decided to modernize large industrial machines to work with more durable and modern materials.
Cherepovets - attractions for children
The city has two cultural centers for children: a museum and a musical theater.
Children's Museum
In 1988, an unusual museum appeared in Cherepovets, designed for a children's audience. Since 2001, it has been housed in a two-story stone house.
Among the exhibits are children's shoes and clothing, collections of toys made from different materials (classic soft toys, as well as clay and wood). Address: Lunacharsky Avenue, building 39.
Children's musical theater
In May 1991, a musical theater for children opened in Cherepovets. Its auditorium is small, the so-called “home” format.
Performances are organized for young spectators, shadow theater fairy tales are acted out, and works of children's writers are recited. Children are also introduced to musical instruments. Address: Stroiteley Square, building 1.
