(Russian: Ardatov, Erzya: Ordanbue) is a city and the administrative center of Ardatovsky District in the Republic of Mordovia, Russia, located on the Alatyr River 114 kilometers (71 mi) northeast of Saransk, the capital of the republic. At the 2010 census its population was 9,400. [2]

There is no information about the village in the 1671 census. Registry documents show that some of the residents of Pichevele moved to the villages of Alovo (now the Atyashevsky district) and Altyshevo (now the Alatyrsky district of the Chuvash Republic), and another village was founded on the old place: in 1671 it was called “Ardatovaya, which is on Alatyr, Verkhalatorsky camp." , who founded this settlement. Residents of Ardatov participated in rebel groups during the Civil Wars of the 17th and 18th centuries. (see Civil War 1670-1671, Civil War 1773-1775). After the provincial reform (1775), the city was transferred to the category of urban settlements; in 1779 transferred from the Kazan province to the Simbirsk province; from September 15, 1780, with the formation of the Simbirsk governorship, Ardatov was a district town. He was granted a coat of arms, which depicted two haystacks on a silver field, as a sign of his abundance. How the city of Aradatov developed slowly. The population was engaged in agriculture, trade, and small crafts. During the Patriotic War of 1812, Ardatovsky district allocated more than a thousand militias led by colonels of the cavalry regiment S. Arapov and the infantry regiment I. Filatov. Among the heroes of the Patriotic War, natives of the district were noted: the brothers Beketov and Bestuzhev, A. L. Durasov, R. Abramov, P. L. Akhmatov, L. S. Vedenyakin, S. P. Muravyov-Bykov and others. According to the “List of Populations” places of the Simbirsk province" (1863), by the beginning of 1860 there were 715 houses (5,247 people) in Ardatov. In 1913, there were 930 households (6,873 people) in Ardatov; 1 village and 4 stone churches, a women's gymnasium, schools: 4-grade, women's primary, cutting and sewing, carpentry and zemstvo; zemstvo hospital, postal station, city and zemstvo almshouses. The Sergiev Fair was held annually on August 18-28.

On March 15, 1917, the Council of Workers', Soldiers' and Peasants' Deputies was created. On November 19, 1917, Soviet power was established. On February 25, 1918, a counter-revolutionary revolt took place here, suppressed with the help of Red Army soldiers from Simbirsk. On July 1, 1918, a city party organization was formed. During the Great Patriotic War, evacuation hospital No. 3054 was located in Ardatov.

The city is located on the banks of the Alatyr River (a tributary of the Sura River), 114 km from Saransk, 10 km from the Ardatov railway station of the Red Knot - Kanash section of the Gorky Railway.
