Sights of the city of Belgorod: Photos and addresses.
The indigenous residents of the city of Belgorod believe that the well-known Prince Vladimir the Red Sun made efforts to found their city, although it is almost impossible to find evidence of this in the form of architectural monuments of that time. First of all, the sights of Belgorod will interest those who adore museums and parks, and also no one will be indifferent to the beautiful design of the Philharmonic and the restored Temple of Faith, Hope and Love, as well as their mother named Sofia.

The city looks nice, especially if you take in all its beauty in the warm season, when you can take a walk and see something new during long evening walks. In summer, you will probably enjoy walking along any of the central squares, riding bicycles, or just passing the time in one of the small cozy cafes.

City `s history

Belgorod is one of the oldest cities in the country, which arose on the Seversky Settlement on the banks of the river. Seversky Settlement is a settlement of the Eastern Slavs that arose in the second half of the 1st millennium.

According to the generally accepted opinion of historians, the city was first founded by decree of Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich on September 11, 1596 as a Border Fortress. Since 1658, the city became the center of the Belgorod region - instead of the defense line that protected the Muscovite kingdom from Tatar invasions.

In 965, this territory passed to the Pereyaslav Principality of Kievan Rus. The famous Belgorod fortress was located on the right bank of the river. On the eastern side it was fenced by a river, on the southern side by a huge ravine, and on the northern side by an impenetrable forest. Service here was not easy: it and neighboring areas were raided not only by the Crimean khans, but also by the feudal lords of Lithuania, who conquered most of Ukraine. In one of these attacks the city was destroyed.

In 1779 it became the district center of the Kursk province. For a long time, the industry was focused on the extraction of chalk, the production of bricks, lime, saltpeter, and wax. Changes began only with the development of industry and the abolition of serfdom. A railway was built, which made it possible to establish trade relations with villages and neighboring cities. In the twentieth century, the city was rightfully considered a railway junction. Industry quickly recovered after the end of the revolution and civil war. By 1926, the pre-war level had been reached, as a result of which a power station was built in the floodplain of the Seversky Donets. In the 30s A boiler plant is being built, the number of hospitals, kindergartens and schools is growing, and the pace of house construction is increasing.

During the Second World War, the city and its surroundings were the site of fierce battles. In 1941, there was a confrontation between the Nazi and Russian armies, as a result of which the Red Army left the city. Residents found themselves under occupation. The shootings took place in the city park, which is now called Memory Park. As a result of the occupation, everything was destroyed, not even entire buildings remained; out of 34,000 inhabitants, no more than 150 remained. And on June 12, one of the largest battles took place near Prokhorovka. The enemy was stopped, and at the end of fierce fighting, he was thrown back to Belgorod.

Physiographical features

The surface of the Rivne region is elevated above sea level by 70-220 meters. Against the background of the general flatness, individual high and low places stand out. The highest place in the district is the village of Eremovka, and the lowest is Nizhnyaya Serebryanka. The height difference is 120 m. Significant elevation and looseness of surface sediments contribute to the widespread development of both slope and deep soil erosion. All this causes the formation of river valleys, gullies and ravines.

The river originates in the territory of the Rivne region. Aydar is a left tributary of the Seversky Donets. The total length of the river Aydar within the Rivne district - 45 kilometers. Here it has two tributaries - the river. Loznaya and r. Nagolnaya.

The main composition of the soil is chernozem, the mechanical composition is loam. A small part of the territory is occupied by chalk outcrops on the slopes of ravines, and in the floodplain of the river. Aydar - sandy loam.

The territory of the Natural Park is dominated by steppe areas on river slopes and ravines, including on chalk outcrops - 85.94%; forest ecosystems (3.74% of the total area), wetland (10.10%) and residential ecosystems (0.22%) are represented to a much lesser extent ).

Vegetable world

The Rovensky Nature Park is located in the subzone of forb-grass (fescue-feather grass) steppes. The park is home to 7 species of plants from the Red Book of the Russian Federation - white-tomento wormwood, Ukrainian kopeck, chalk hyssop, thin-leaved peony, low iris, marsh orchis, feather feather grass. There are many rare southern plants - holocolumnar ash (burning bush), line bindweed, common bearded vulture, etc., Lessing's feather grass and hair grass dominate in the steppes.

Animal world

Due to the combination of different ecological conditions of different parts of the park, its territory as a whole is distinguished by a significant species diversity of animals that constantly live or periodically occur here. In various biotopes of the park, more than a hundred nesting and fifty migratory and migratory bird species have been recorded, among which about a dozen are included in the Red Book of the Russian Federation and almost the same number are included in the regional Red Book. Among mammals, the European marmot (baibak) can rightfully be considered the symbol of this site. In general, among the mammals of the Rovensky Park located in the southeast of the Belgorod region (as, indeed, among birds, and partly reptiles), the proportion of typically steppe species is more noticeable. The world of insects is quite rich, among which rare ones are noted - Omias warty, Scolia hairy (steppe), carpenter bee...

Parks and squares, excursions of Belgorod

What to watch and where to go? You will learn about all the most interesting places for walks and incredible photo shoots.

Cathedral Square

This square is central, and around it are located museums and buildings of public importance. Cathedral Square differs from similar places in that the pavement design is original - experienced craftsmen laid out a circle in the shape of the sun on the paving stones, and in the center there is a copper map depicting the entire Belgorod region. Along the perimeter of the map are the coats of arms of each district and district of the region. Celebrations, rallies, parades and other equally important events take place on this square.

Monument to Vladimir the Great

This monument is located on Kharkov Mountain. The figure reaches a height of 7 meters, and itself is located on a pedestal 15 meters high. Thus, the structure rises above the entire space and is visible even from afar. It is believed that Vladimir founded the first settlement on the site of modern Belgorod, although there is no documentary evidence of this. The monument was erected in 1998, and 1,500 kg of copper were used for its manufacture.

Sundial on Narodny Boulevard

The Sundial is located in the city center on the main boulevard. They are made of granite and bronze and are quite large in size (the composition reaches 11 meters in diameter). It was thanks to the sculptor T. Kostenko that a giant chronometer appeared in the city in 2008. In sunny weather during daylight, the clock shows the time with an accuracy of ten minutes, but at night you can see stars on the dial.

Monument to an honest traffic cop

It is interesting that the prototype of an honest traffic cop was a fairly real character, namely P.K. Grechikhin, who worked in the traffic police in the mid-20th century. This man became famous for the fact that he did not take bribes at all and did not ignore even the slightest sign of disrespect for traffic rules to violators. But the strange thing is that, despite his extraordinary zeal, he was not promoted and he retired with the rank of sergeant major. But he received more - a monument was erected in his honor in 2004.

City Zoo

The zoo was not created right away - at first it was a zoo corner in 1988, and until 1991 it was also part of Victory Park. There are approximately 90 species of animals (more than two hundred individuals in total), of which 15 species are listed in the Red Book. In the enclosures there are representatives of the feline group, wolves, foxes, as well as kangaroos and camels, which are unusual for our area. A petting zoo has been created for children, where you can enjoy the joy of rabbits, little goats, and even hold chickens in your arms.

Central Park

By tradition, the city's central park is called Lenin Park. It was founded back in 1950. It is difficult to imagine that at that time a different, never revolutionary name was assigned to a public place. After almost 50 years of good operation, the area was reconstructed at the beginning of 2000, and attractions were installed, an amusement park and a children's playground were installed.

Victory Park

This park was founded in 1989 on the site where fierce battles had previously taken place, and in August 1943, the first fireworks were launched in this very place in honor of the first victory over the enemy army. In memory of the events of the past, memorials were erected and a Walk of Fame was created. Here you will see busts of all the heroes of the USSR, even Marshal G. Zhukov. The space is decorated with a small fountain, which is equipped with lighting.

Picnic Park (Solomino)

This park space is modern, organized specifically for outdoor recreation - picnics, hiking and river walks, cycling and sunbathing. There are many types of entertainment in Solomino, because visitors are invited to play airsoft, laser tag, shoot at a shooting range or try to compete in a rope park. A children's playground was established here for children.

Monastery Forest

This is not exactly a landmark of the city of Belgorod, but the place is interesting. There is a Distillery Log near the city. It was in this place that the image of the Mother of God was found. This incredible event led to the construction of two churches and a chapel, as well as the establishment of an apiary and an orchard. As a result, the Distillery Log became the Monastery Forest.

Under the USSR, the authorities tried to destroy all religious objects, and despite this, people did not stop coming here. In 1955, the chapel was restored. Currently, it is a state reserve for the preservation of local flora. Most nature lovers want to visit this unique corner.

Ice Cream Museum

The museum is located on the adjacent territory of OJSC Belgorod Cold Storage Plant. The museum accepts visitors by prior arrangement. During the tour, you will not only learn the history of the enterprise, but also the features of ice cream production and the process. In addition, you can take part in a tasting.

Excursions go in several directions:

  • A story about the plant, production technologies, secret ingredients and the best employees.
  • A story about the intricacies of preparation and storage, as well as a visit to the production workshop.

This is one of the most unusual and worthy attractions of the city.

Memory Park

Address: Belgorod, Khmelnitsky Avenue 133

The park was founded in memory of the city residents who died during the Great Patriotic War. The main attraction of the park is the memorial complex.

This is the personification of courage and sorrow. A barefoot young man, bent over, covers his head with his hands. A man puts his hand on a wound on his stomach. The lifeless body stretched out on the cold slabs. The woman tries to cover the child with herself.

The paths of the park are paved with slabs. Along them, as a reminder of mourning, black cast-iron benches are placed. The park is decorated with an artificial pond with a waterfall.

Interesting Facts:

  • In ancient times, most of the modern territory of “Belogorye” performed a defensive function. Such dense forests grew along the river banks that not only cavalry, but sometimes even foot troops could not pass through them for raids. Later, taking advantage of the local landscapes, they began to build fortresses, abatis and earthworks here.
  • During the time of Peter I, a decree was issued banning deforestation on the territory of the modern “Forest on Vorskla” for any other purposes other than the construction of a new fleet. Violation of the order was punishable by death penalty.
  • Some plants growing in dense protected oak forests are forced to fit their entire life cycle into 2-3 weeks of early spring - when the snow is already melting, but the leaves on the trees have not yet blossomed. During the rest of the year, when only 1-5% of sunlight reaches them due to the dense foliage of oak trees, they survive only in underground rhizomes and tubers.
