30 best attractions and entertainment in Evpatoria

Crimea is beautiful for its natural diversity: pebble beaches and greenery of tropical plants on the southern coast, large stones and the gentle horizon of the mountains in the eastern part of Crimea, rocky shores in the area of Sevastopol and Cape Tarkhankut. But today I will tell you about a holiday in Yevpatoria, an ancient city on the west coast.

You will find out who the Scythians, Kenas and Dervishes are and why they whirl. I will share places where you can drink coffee from an old copper pot and eat local “chibireks”. This is the name of chebureks that has been preserved since ancient times. I’ll show you on the map where to rent a bicycle inexpensively and find the purple-yellow-red walls of one-story houses. They will add color to your vacation photos.

History of Evpatoria in 40 seconds

Geslev Gate / photo by the author
In the 6th century BC, when Sanskrit grammar was created in India, Buddha began to read the first sermons, and the Iron Age began in Europe, Greek settlers from Ionia founded a new city-police on the western coast of the peninsula and called it Kerkinitida . This is the first name of present-day Evpatoria.

For more than two centuries, Kerkinitida existed as an independent state and conducted extensive trade with many cities of the ancient world. At the end of the 4th century BC, the city became dependent on Chersonese, which unexpectedly had a beneficial effect on its development. The thriving polis is home to 2,000 people. A century later, the city was captured by the Scythians, after which the history of Kerkinitida ends, and we still do not know about the development of the polis until the 15th century.

In the 15th century, when China launched expeditions to new lands, the “Great Schism” occurred in the Catholic Church, and in Russia “The Tale of the Massacre of Mamai” was written, and on the site of the former Kerkinitida, the Turks founded the Gezlev fortress. Trade is thriving again in the city, they are beginning to mint their own coins, and trading in slaves is the main source of income for the feudal lords.

Evpatoria on the map of Crimea / OSM

The Ottoman Empire dominates until Catherine II takes Gezlov. The fortress cannot be preserved, but the entrance city gate remains, which can be seen today, and several architectural monuments (I’ll tell you about them a little later).

The city received a new name under Catherine II after the Russian-Turkish War and the annexation of Crimea to Russia.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Evpatoria became a famous resort. Mud baths and sanatoriums are opened here. Mothers with children and elderly couples come.

During the Great Patriotic War, events took place in captured Evpatoria, the memory of which is now preserved by the monument to the Evpatoria Landing . In December 1941, the USSR besieged the Kerch Peninsula. To distract the Wehrmacht forces, they take a tactical move and send a landing party of 700 people to the west coast. There is no way to survive after the operation, and the Red Army soldiers understand this. Instead of the expected two days, Yevpatoria was held for almost a month. The entire landing force dies.

Today, Yevpatoria, rich in historical events, is called the city of children, sailors and merchants. In its vicinity there are youth camps, and in the city itself there is a port.

What to see in Yevpatoria and where to walk

There are 3 types of mineral waters and 2 pump rooms in Evpatoria. Anyone can get water for free.

Every Friday during the summer months there are performances on Karaimskaya Street. Along the entire “Little Jerusalem” route there are “living statues”. Artists on stilts in colorful costumes walk along the street, creative groups perform, and conduct master classes.

Walking around the old southern city

Route “Little Jerusalem” / photo by the author
The route “Little Jerusalem ” was reconstructed in 2007. Some exhibitions have been preserved here since ancient times.

We start the journey from the Gezlev Gate, and then we go wherever our eyes lead us. Everywhere we see bright colorful walls of houses, tourists strolling with plastic bags in which chibireks purchased nearby are wrapped. We will soon get hungry too and go after them, but for now the romance of the narrow streets is calling us. We take photos against the backdrop of the bright walls of one-story buildings that still belong to peoples of different faiths. We'll figure it out, but only after coffee.

Drinking coffee from an old copper pot

Coffee shop in Evpatoria / photo by the author
There are several cafes along the “Little Jerusalem” route that serve freshly brewed coffee. I recommend going to the coffee shop located in the Gezlev Gate itself.

The volume of Turkish coffee is smaller, but the drink itself is tastier than in chain cafes. For those who prefer regular coffee, opposite the stylized coffee shop there is a stall with Americano and cappuccino. But I recommend opting for a small “Keara Kjave” coffee brewed in an old copper pot. Price per drink - up to 200 rubles.

Who are dervishes and why do they whirl?

Graffiti depicting dervishes / photo by the author
After coffee, we continue our journey through “Little Jerusalem”, where we constantly encounter signs with “Tekie Dervishes” .

Dervishes are called mendicant vagabonds-ascetics who travel in search of the meaning of life.

Dervishes do not have the concept of “mine,” since everything in the world, according to the monks, belongs to God. Dervishes spin in canvas circle skirts and dance in prayer to God.

Ascetic monks founded their monastery in Evpatoria 500 years ago. Today they show costumed performances here and offer to take a tour for 300 rubles.

Tropic Park

It occupies part of a spacious block formed by Demysheva, Frunze, Nekrasov and Tokarev streets. In the east it borders on a zone of ancient buildings, in the west it abuts the huge sanatorium “Themis”.

This place is worth visiting with children: exotic animals and a lot of impressions. Tropic Park is located indoors, which allows you to visit it in any weather. There is a petting zoo where you can touch and feed the animals.

Museum "Pirates of the Black Sea"

An entertaining museum for children and adults, in which many exhibits were brought directly from the seabed. At the entrance you are greeted by animating guides dressed in pirate costumes. Walking through the small hall, you can see the pirates' cabins, a cannon, chests of gold, listen to funny stories about pirates, and, if you wish, make your own souvenir.

Evpatoria Museum of Local Lore

Founded back in 1921. Today, more than 100,000 museum exhibits are stored here, including those found at the Kerkinitida excavation site. In a specially built hall, a diorama “Landing of the Evpatoria landing force” was opened. The museum was one of the first to open an ethnographic exhibition in Crimea. A museum of the “history of the Crimean War” was opened on Revolution Street - a department of military history of the Evpatoria Museum of Local Lore. All the historical values of the city are collected in this muse.

Museum "House of Wine"

Located in the city center, next to the embankment. Easily accessible by any transport. Here you have a unique opportunity to taste and buy the best Crimean wines. You can buy not only fine wines, but also cognac. The cheese shop is particularly popular.

Long trips

The main and, in fact, the only major attraction to the north is Cape Tarkhankut. The distance is over 100 km, you will spend up to 2 hours on the road - the roads there are not so hot.

Tourists are attracted by the picturesque limestone cliffs, a through arch and a whole tunnel near the Bolshoy and Maly Atlesh capes. The “Cup of Love,” a small natural reservoir in the coastal cliffs, is also popular.

Note that today organized bus excursions are carried to Tarkhankut. Not too expensive, but very rich - vdol-mysa-tarhankut-i-otdyh-na-krymskih-maldivah.

The beauty of the area was exploited to the fullest by Soviet filmmakers, who filmed “Amphibian Man” here, and then “Pirates of the 20th Century”. Today, mass tourists have also come here. Most of them settle in the village of Olenevka. And, by the way, I am often dissatisfied with this: the roads there are country roads and in the summer there is literally a pillar of dust due to the mass of passing cars!

Those who are planning to travel south from Evpatoria should keep in mind the significant traffic jams that accumulate in Saki and nearby during the high season. And also, at times, the road surface on the highway leading towards Bakhchisarai and Sevastopol is of very poor quality.

A repeatedly patched comb and asphalt “waves” ten centimeters high are unlikely to please the suspension of your car. And if it is low, then perhaps even the body.

Bakhchisarai

The perfectly preserved Khan's Palace and the local “Fountain of Tears”, which prompted Alexander Sergeevich to write a spiritual verse, are its main attractions. But not the only ones!

Tourist favorites also include the Assumption Monastery in a picturesque gorge and the cave city of Chufut-Kale. To get there, those interested will have to sweat and climb a rather steep path.

There are generally many cave towns in the vicinity of Bakhchisarai, but Chufut-Kale is the most easily accessible of them. By the way, there is a walking route that allows you to get from it to another rock fortress - Tepe-Kermen.

But to get to Eski-Kermen or, for example, Mangup-Kale, you will have to take a different route. Follow the Sevastopol highway, and then turn in the direction of the village of Zalesnoye. You will have to get lost to get to the beginning of the trail to Kachi-Kalon, in his case it is better to “arm yourself” with a guide - peshhernyiy-gorod-kachi-kalon.

By the way, near Bakhchisaray for very little money you can take a horse riding lesson. In fact, this is not even a banal ride in the saddle - through a picturesque area, by the way. And an attempt to learn something more... In general, children will like it. And, one might think, adults too - master-klass-obshheniya-s-loshadmi.

Sevastopol

Seeing all the sights of the most populated and largest city in Crimea in 1 day is not just difficult, it’s impossible. And therefore, we advise you to first pay attention to Chersonesos and the Sevastopol Dolphinarium in Artbukhta. You can also take a boat ride around the bay. And during this time you can see the famous Count’s Marina and the Monument to Sunken Ships.

During a boat excursion, an intelligent guide will quickly dump on you a lot of both well-known and frankly surprising facts. By making further walks no longer necessary. For money, of course...

By the way, we have dedicated a separate extensive material to the heroic city. Where everything that is easy to independently inspect is listed. If interested, you can check out the link above.

Yalta

Another destination, even a cursory inspection of which will take much more than one day. Considering that you will spend 2.5-3 hours on a one-way trip alone, we advise you to develop a travel route in advance.

And without hesitation, highlight the main points in it. Like the Ai-Petri plateau, Livadia or, for example, the Vorontsov Palace in Alupka. Connoisseurs of hiking may want to go to the Botkinskaya or Koreizskaya “health trails” in the mountains.

What palaces in Crimea can you visit today?

Tourists with children would rather visit the Skazka Zoo than stand in line for the cable car. Moreover, you can climb Ai-Petri yourself by car.

And then also go down. Or make a “knight’s move”, going straight from the plateau... to Bakhchisarai. Low-slung cars have difficulty passing there, but crossovers should make it through the road without incident

We look at the temples of Evpatoria

Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker

1893, Orthodoxy

Orthodox Cathedral in Yevpatoria / photo by the author

The first Orthodox church in the city was built by the Greeks. Almost four centuries later, Christians continue to come to this place to pray. Nowadays there is a majestic cathedral here, consecrated in the name of the patron saint of all sailors, merchants and children (and this is still the main population of Evpatoria), St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

Juma-Jami Mosque

1564, Islam

Rules for women when entering a mosque / photo by the author

Not far from the Orthodox church there is an even more ancient structure. The mosque was erected by the chief architect of the Ottoman Empire, who lived for 99 years and was a mathematician, engineer and astronomer. The great architect's name was Khoja Mimar Sinan Agha. The mosque is still in operation and has four entrances. The eastern entrance, which was intended for the khan, was opened for the last time 100 years ago, when Emperor Nicholas II entered Juma-Jami.

You can tour the mosque - at the entrance, tourists are explained the rules of conduct and given special clothing. On Tuesdays entry is closed to non-believers.

Yeghia Kapay Synagogue

Synagogue, Evpatoria / photo by the author

There is a Jewish synagogue 100 meters from the mosque. The altar is located in the east, towards Jerusalem. Above the six-pointed Star of David are depicted Old Testament symbols: the Ark of Moses and the tripod for sacrifices.

The synagogue is open on schedule. In front of the entrance are kippahs, the traditional head coverings that men are required to wear before entering the synagogue.

Nearby there is a cafe with Jewish cuisine, where you can see signs with the inscriptions: “Promotion: buy two cups of coffee and buy a third one”, “If you throw ten-ruble coins into the fountain, the likelihood of your wishes coming true is higher.” The souvenir shop sells red thread from Jerusalem.

There is a Small Wailing Wall on the territory, where people leave notes with their wishes and requests. All messages, according to ministers, are sent monthly to Jerusalem.

Karaite kenas

1818, Karaism

In Yevpatoria there is a functioning temple complex of the Karaites, a small people of Crimea. There are about 2000 people in the world.

The Karaites are the descendants of the Turkic tribes of the aboriginal population of the peninsula. The formation of the ethnos began in the 8th century. The Karaite community was formed in Evpatoria in the 16th century, and two centuries ago the Evpatoria kenas became the only spiritual center of the Karaites in Russia.

Karaism is a monotheistic religion limited to the books of the Holy Scriptures of the Old Testament. Karaites are convinced that the Law of God is perfect and does not need interpretation. Services are conducted in biblical (Hebrew) language. Now the complex houses an ethnic cafe and an excursion center.

Armenian Church of Surb Nikoghayos

1837, Apostolic Church of Armenia

The temple, which now belongs to the Armenian community, was built two centuries ago. During its eventful history, it has been an archive and a home for the disabled.

In the courtyard there is a carved stone cross, carved from tuff, which has sacred meaning for the Armenian people. This is a symbol not only of faith, but of the eternity of national culture, as well as a prayer embodied in stone. The temple is operational.

Temple of St. Elijah

The temple is located right on the embankment. Refers to buildings in the Greco-Byzantine style. The building is shaped like a cross. The facades of the temple look simple; the most striking decoration is the stained glass windows. The bell tower, consisting of three tiers, attracts attention.

Pantheon of the city's founders. Evpatoria has many faces

Over the course of its history, the city has changed several names. It was founded more than 2.5 thousand years ago by the Greeks, who named the city Kerkinitida. During the era of the Crimean khans, it was a strategic fortress of Gezlev.

When Catherine II took Crimea under her patronage, she began to rename the cities, giving preference to Greek names. Although Catherine had never been to Evpatoria, she remembered the Pontic king Mithridates Eupator, who at one time controlled Kerkinitida, and, according to the recollections of eyewitnesses, said: “Eupator and I subjugated this city!” This is how the name “Evpatoria” was born.

The history of renamings and rulers of the city can be traced through the memorial on Theater Square. The memorial is crowned with the coat of arms of Evpatoria, and the Eternal Flame is installed nearby.

The city is more than 2.5 thousand years old!

Holidays in Evpatoria by the sea: throw the bike and run to the beach

Beach season is in full swing / photo by the author

Beach "Central"

A narrow city beach with developed infrastructure and a crowd of tourists attached to it.

This is the most popular beach in the city. Located next to the seaport. It stretches from Frunze Park to Duvanovskaya Street. The beach is narrow (about 30m), but flat, suitable for families with children. The absence of waves and white sand are popular with tourists. Smoking is prohibited on the beach and cleaning is carried out frequently. The beach is rich in infrastructure, there is entertainment in the form of slides and attractions.

New beach

It stretches from Simferopolskaya street, station “54th km” along the highway to Saki-Simferopol to station “Pribrezhnaya”. This is a pebble beach, more suitable for adults. It is almost never crowded. The depth begins close to the shore.

One day route around Evpatoria

We talked about what entertainment to choose and what you can see in Evpatoria without fuss in a standard 7-10 days of rest. But if you spent all your time on the beach, and there are only a day or two left before departure, you need to see as many interesting things as possible in a short period of time.

Here is one of the most intense independent routes, which covers all the main attractions of the new Evpatoria - that is, its modern part.

Gorky Embankment

The central embankment of Evpatoria stretches for 800 m along the Black Sea. Sandy beaches separate it from the water. The main part is paved with tiles, and along the entire length of the promenade there are observation platforms with columns and forged fences.

The embankment is decorated with various sculptures, the most popular among which are a boy with a weight and a figure of naked Hercules. It is installed at the very beginning of the walking area - near the street. Frunze.

There are fountains on the embankment. The light and music composition that visualizes the pictures is especially impressive.

On Gorkovskaya Embankment there is a boat station and a pier, from where ships take tourists on boat trips.

Aquarium

The Evpatoria Aquarium occupies two floors of a building on the embankment. The entrance is shaped like a monster's mouth, and the corridor looks like a sunken frigate.

In this “underwater kingdom” live fish from the Japanese and Black Seas, from the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. More than 100 species of living creatures are represented here, including rare ones: arawan, false flatfish, chukuchan, snake fish. In the center of the grotto there is an outdoor pool with sturgeon.

On the second floor there are terrariums in which sharks, crocodiles, turtles, and iguanas live. The containers are decorated with bas-reliefs and seem to be carved into the rocks. The bright illumination evokes the feeling of diving into the seabed. There are also aquariums with shrimps, bright neons and other representatives of the ichthyofauna.

Arboretum

The arboretum occupies 4 hectares. This area is home to ornamental and fruit shrubs, trees, and flowers—there are about 300 species of them. Among the plants in the park, exotic figs and cypress are especially valuable, as well as acacia and maple, which are more familiar to Russian latitudes. Aloe, cacti, roses, lavender and other representatives of exotic flora are found in the park.

The arboretum has artificial ponds with wrought-iron bridges across them. During the warm season, fountains operate. Beautiful photos can be taken in the greenhouse, open all year round.

There is a playground for children, and the crocodile breeding farm is of particular interest to adults.

Where to eat in Evpatoria

In one of the street cafes / photo by the author
We try “chibereki”, burma, and then pilav, tatar ash and yuzum yaprak sarma. Don't understand anything? These are the dishes you should try to become connoisseurs of local cuisine.

I recommend getting something tasty from the cafe opposite the Gezlev Gate. It’s better to eat this on the go, walking around “Little Jerusalem”, to support the local tourist tradition: take a photo with the “chibirek” against the backdrop of the bright walls of the Old City. But for a complete lunch, I advise you to use the sites “TripAdvisor” and “Yandex Maps”

Noble individuals had their own private baths, while others had to use public ones. At that time there were 7 of them. One of them was located on Krasnoarmeyskaya Street, but it was recently closed.
