Historical sketch
Originally the village of Nizhnevolzhskoe; name for its location in the lower reaches of the Volga. In 1967, the village was transformed into the working settlement of Nizhnevolzhsk, which on March 31, 1983 became the center of the Narimanovsky district of the Astrakhan region (before that the city of Astrakhan was the center of the district).
On October 19, 1984, the town of Nizhnevolzhsk was transformed into a city and named after the district after the name of the Soviet state and party leader N.N. Nariman Kerbalay oglu Narimanov (1870-1925).

NARIMANOV (Nərimanov) Nariman Najaf ogly (erroneously Nariman Kerbalay Najaf ogly: the title prefix “Kerbalay” belonged to N.’s father, who made a pilgrimage to Karbala) [2(14).4.1870, Tiflis - 19.3.1925, Moscow], owl. Author lit. works: drama “Ignorance” (“Nadanlyg”, 1894; criticism of feudal remnants and religious fanaticism), comedy “Shamdan-bek” (1895), the first in Azerbaijan. literary history the tragedy “Nadir Shah” (1899; about the attempts of a person from a poor family to carry out democratic reforms and his death in the fight against the clergy and bureaucracy), the novel “Bahadur and Sona” (part 1, 1896, part 2, 1913; tragic love story of a Turk and an Armenian woman). Among other works are novels, short stories, lit. criticism, journalism. Translated N.V. Gogol’s comedy “The Inspector General” into Azerbaijani. language (1892).
He was buried in Moscow on Red Square. at the Kremlin wall.
A city in the Astrakhan region and streets in several cities of the Russian Federation are named after N.; mountains district, avenue, metro station in Baku. In 1972, a monument to N. was erected in Baku (sculptor D. Karyagdy).
