The image of St. Petersburg in the novel “Crime and Punishment” - examples of essays

Essay example 1 Undoubtedly, the landscapes of St. Petersburg in the work “Crime and Punishment” are one of the characters. Describing a city of contrasts, combining different layers of society, the author conveys to the reader a clearer mental state of his characters. For each person, St. Petersburg is seen differently, it all depends on who you are: a rich man, a money lender, an aristocrat, a poor man, a student. For the upper classes of society, St. Petersburg seemed festive and cheerful, but for others, it was gray and hopeless.

Basically, the heroes of the novel are people from the lower strata of the population. Accordingly, due to their financial situation, a gray, gloomy, oppressive city is closer to them. F. M. Dostoevsky introduces the reader to his St. Petersburg from the inside, forcing him to look at the images of the city through the eyes of the heroes.

The main character of the work is Rodion Raskolnikov in the person of a poor student, crushed by poverty. He rented a room in the Sennaya Square area. The author describes this part of the city “without gardens and fountains, where there is dirt and stench, and all sorts of nasty things,” thereby showing the contingent of people living in it.

In the novel, St. Petersburg is presented as a killer city that encourages people to commit crimes. All the events of the work mainly take place on the street. The color yellow dominates not only in city landscapes, but also in apartment interiors and in descriptions of residents’ complexions. It is yellow and gray colors that enhance the feeling of pain, internal anxiety and psychological instability. The author repeatedly repeats the words “yellow” and “bilious” in the narrative, as if comparing them. Dostoevsky's Petersburg is sick, and most of the characters in his work are sick, some morally, some physically.

Dostoevsky's city personifies the indifference of people of the upper classes, who do not care about the sick, the unemployed, orphans, and poor students.

The writer sadly describes the existence of beggars, because it is their living conditions that are the impetus for creating crazy theories, committing crimes, committing murders, drunkenness, and prostitution.

The image of St. Petersburg in the work is the embodiment of the author’s protest against social inequality inherent in the modern author of the time.
Essay example 2
The image of St. Petersburg in the novel “Crime and Punishment” is symbolic. It is the place where the main events of the work unfold. The city very accurately characterizes all the inhabitants and helps to better understand the fate of each individual hero.

Petersburg appears to the reader as gloomy, inhospitable, and alien. The dirty streets are crowded with impoverished officials and artisans, for whom the main meaning of life has become the beer tavern, where every second person drowns out his grief. The author compares the courtyards to bottomless wells, creating a depressing and pressing atmosphere on people, from which it is no longer possible for poor residents to escape.

This gray landscape gives the novel a special gloomy tone. The city is dominated by drunkenness, prostitution, crime, and usury. Out of despair, residents constantly commit suicide, wither away from diseases inherent in the lower strata of society, and simply die from mental suffering.

For most residents, their existence is more like a nightmare that cannot end. Almost everyone who belongs to the lower stratum of the population of St. Petersburg lives in communal apartments, and due to huge debts to their owners, they are often left without food. The situation in their rooms is as creepy as on the streets. Small rooms, more reminiscent of coffins, are filled with old, shabby furniture; dirty yellow walls express despondency; the stench and complete devastation equate such a dwelling to a barn.

Petersburg has collected all the vices of humanity: anger, hypocrisy, greed, meanness, cruelty. All around you can see only the immense human grief and their mutilated destinies.

Poor Sonya Marmeladova has to engage in humiliating activities for a girl in order to feed her large family, while enduring humiliation from people. Rodion Raskolnikov decides to kill the old woman and her sister Lizaveta, and Arkady Svidrigailov is suspected of murdering his wife and involvement in numerous suicides. Each of the heroes has some kind of sin in their soul.

Their world mixed reality with delirium, nightmare with reality. Even Arkady Ivanovich called it “a city of half-crazy people” and predicted the imminent onset of a flood.

The image of St. Petersburg shown by Dostoevsky embodied the author’s contradiction to the existing evil and depravity, as well as the abnormal structure of his contemporary society.
Essay example 3
In the world history of literature, Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky holds one of the first places. His most famous work is the novel “Crime and Punishment,” created in the second half of the 19th century. At this time, St. Petersburg was one of the richest and most beautiful cities in Europe.

Petersburg in the novel “Crime and Punishment” appears as one of the characters. We meet his image on every page of the work. St. Petersburg is a city of contrasts.

Here, amid excessive splendor and extreme poverty, different layers of society coexist: rich aristocrats, moneylenders, poor people, students. Each of them has their own vision of the city: for some it is festive, brilliant and cheerful, for others it is gray and hopeless. The main characters of the novel are closer to the second capital - houses that look like coffins, compressed space, black stairs, gray pavements, dark gateways. Dostoevsky uses the description of St. Petersburg in order to show the mental state of the heroes as clearly as possible. Individual details are constantly repeated: “stench”, “stuffiness”, “dirt”, “dust”, “stale air”. They reflect the situation on the eve of a terrible tragedy.

In the novel, Petersburg is a murderous city, pushing people to commit moral crimes.

The main colors in the work are yellow, red and white. But among them it is yellow, dirty yellow and dull yellow that dominates. These colors greatly enhance feelings of inner depression, oppression and psychological instability.

The author seems to compare the words “bilious” and “yellow,” which are used more than once in the story.

An integral part of the work is the landscape of St. Petersburg, which has a socio-psychological character. A city of contrasts, with unique palaces and cathedrals, with dusty, dirty pavements, with huge houses that oppress the soul, puts pressure on people, depresses, kills all spiritual impulses. People are alone in the crowd, humiliated by their poverty, which they cannot even hide.

Dostoevsky’s great mastery helps us imagine St. Petersburg exactly as it appears to “little people.”

Dostoevsky met the famous geographer even before the wedding, and read him chapters from his “Notes from the House of the Dead.” But the writer’s wife did not like the “city of mountain officers” - she was afraid of not fitting into the local society. In addition, here Fyodor Mikhailovich had an epileptic seizure.

Dostoevsky is in despair because of the separation and is going crazy with jealousy: Maria Isaeva has a new admirer - the district teacher Nikolai Vergunov, who, compared to the former convict in a soldier's overcoat, looks like a more attractive candidate for a husband.

Love in my years is not a whim, it lasts two years, you hear, two years, in 10 months of separation it not only did not weaken, but reached the point of absurdity. I will die if I lose my angel: either I will go crazy, or I will go to the Irtysh!” - he writes in a letter to his friend in St. Petersburg, begging him to apply for an amnesty in honor of the upcoming coronation of Alexander II.

And forgiveness is finally received.

On February 6, 1857, at the altar of the Grado-Kuznetsk Odigitrievskaya Church, the priest joined the hands of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky, ensign of the Siberian Line Battalion, and Maria Dmitrievna Isaeva, the widow of the collegiate secretary. The best man at the wedding was the rejected rival Vergunov.

Kuznetsk, which contemporaries compared to a big toy, Dostoevsky categorically did not like - for him it was a symbol of hopelessness and timelessness. After marriage, he hoped to move to Barnaul, a city where he had passed through several times, but managed to meet and make friends with the local intelligentsia. In the middle of the 19th century, it was considered the most cultural city in Siberia. The first museum in these parts arose here, an art gallery, a choir and an amateur theater for mountain officers operated, and a public library was opened at the silver smelter.

The spring air, after several years of “crowding, stuffiness and heavy captivity,” intoxicates Dostoevsky - he is all in anticipation of decisive changes, the appearance of something formidable and inevitable in his life. Later, comparing his feelings at that time with subsequent events, he will be amazed: “I prophesied for myself!”

In Semipalatinsk, Fyodor Dostoevsky met his future wife Maria Isaeva.

Kuznetsk. “Either I’ll go crazy or go to the Irtysh!”

Maria Dmitrievna Isaeva (nee Konstant) is a fragile, pretty blonde, 28 years old, a student of the Astrakhan Institute of Noble Maidens, the unhappy wife of a minor official - an alcoholic and a loser, the mother of a seven-year-old boy. All three would later become prototypes of the Marmeladovs, but now the future author of “Crime and Punishment” is seized with a “formidable feeling” for a woman “with an excellent, generous heart,” however, even then he noticed a certain morbid impressionability and irritability behind her.
