Modern Tyumen is a large industrial center of Western Siberia, a city of science, culture and sports, a city that is rapidly growing and transforming. Over the past decades, Tyumen has been constantly in the news, as it occupies pride of place in various rankings of the best cities in Russia in terms of the quality of life of the population, in terms of attractiveness for life and business, and in terms of the development of urban infrastructure.

Tyumen is the first Russian city in Siberia, a city with a rich history. It was founded on July 29, 1586 by governors Vasily Sukin and Ivan Myasny as an outpost for the development of Siberia and the Far East, a fortress at the mouth of the Tyumenka River on the ancient caravan road from Central Asia to the Volga region, on land for which the nomads of Southern Siberia had fought for centuries. A new page in the history of Tyumen was the discovery of oil and gas fields in the region.

In the summer in Tyumen, you have endless opportunities to realize any plans and fulfill any desires: you can get acquainted with the history and architectural sights of this Siberian city, devote time to relaxing in nature and swimming in warm springs, walks along the embankment, parks and boulevards. The main thing is to decide in advance and set priorities depending on your preferences and the time available.

Sights of Tyumen in summer

According to the results of the National Tourism Rating 2022, which assesses the tourist attractiveness of regions, the Tyumen region is included in the “Golden Twenty”, occupying 18th place there. So what can Tyumen offer inquisitive tourists in the summer?

Embankment Tours

Let's start our walk around the city from its main promenade - the Tura River embankment . This is the pride of Tyumen, the embankment project is unique because the slope is 25 m high. There are four levels of walking areas connected to each other by stairs and ramps, panels telling about the history of the development of Siberia, and monuments to outstanding people directly related to this, a cascading fountain , reminiscent of a waterfall, beautiful lanterns and a lot of other interesting things.

City holidays, youth festivals and family celebrations, classical music concerts and discos are held here. There are always a lot of people walking on the embankment; it is convenient for mothers with strollers and cyclists. We recommend coming here in the evening to admire the promenade in the light of lanterns and the bridges over the Tura in the evening illumination. The embankment continues to be improved, perhaps when you arrive, work will also be completed on the left bank of the Tura, where a children's area, sports grounds and bicycle paths are being built.

Lovers' Bridge

The most romantic landmark of Tyumen is the Lovers' Bridge , a cable-stayed pedestrian bridge over the Tura River, opened in 1987. This is a favorite place for walks and photo sessions for citizens and guests of the city; newlyweds come here to attach locks with names on its railings and throw the key from the bridge into the river. People make dates here, and to help lovers not be late for their dates, there is a clock hanging at the entrance to the bridge. The bridge offers beautiful views of the embankment and the city at any time of the day, but the bridge looks especially romantic in the evening when its dynamic lighting changes colors.

Tsvetnoy Boulevard

Tsvetnoy Boulevard is a favorite vacation spot for Tyumen residents and city guests. In the 19th century, there was a Trade Square on this site, and in the 20th century, a Park of Culture and Recreation and a stadium were built in its place. The pedestrian boulevard was created as soon as possible in 2004 for the 60th anniversary of the Tyumen region.

There are five squares on Tsvetnoy Boulevard, each with its own peculiarity. In the center of Tsvetnoy Boulevard on Fontannaya Square there is the most beautiful fountain in Tyumen - “The Seasons” , it is especially beautiful in the evening, when the music and bright lighting are turned on. On Circus Square there is the Tyumen Circus and bronze figures of three famous clowns - Yuri Nikulin, Oleg Popov and Mikhail Rumyantsev, and on Sports Square there is the Central Sports Complex. Tsvetnoy Boulevard has various attractions, including a Ferris wheel - a great opportunity to look at the boulevard from above.

There are various entertainment venues, cafes, bars and restaurants on and around the boulevard. There is also something for shopping lovers to do: the Central Trading House and the Tyumen Central Department Store are nearby.

Church of the Savior Not Made by Hands

The Spasskaya Church is one of the architectural pearls of Tyumen, the most striking example of Siberian Baroque in the city’s church architecture, and a cultural heritage site of federal significance. This two-story church was built in 1794–1819, the upper altar was consecrated in the name of the Image of the Savior Not Made by Hands, the lower altar in the name of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God. In 1914–1916, a northern aisle in neo-Russian style was added to the church, consecrated in honor of Andrei of Crete. It was the only temple in the Tyumen province that was decorated with 13 crosses.

The Spasskaya Church was closed in the 1930s, but all the years the building was maintained in decent condition, as it was occupied by a library, a regional archive, and later it housed the funds of the Regional Museum of Local Lore. I. Ya. Slovtsova. The temple is still not operational, as the premises were not vacated for a long time due to the protracted construction of a new building by the local history museum. Work is currently underway; soon this magnificent temple can be seen not only from the outside, but also from the inside.

Theaters

Do you know that the largest drama theater building in Russia is located in Tyumen? Today the Tyumen Bolshoi Drama Theater is one of the leading theater groups in the country, and its history began in 1858, with performances staged by amateur theater troupes. The theater received its first permanent building in 1890, thanks to the merchant of the first guild A.I. Tekutyev, who rebuilt one of his own houses for the theater so that permanent troupes would play on its stage.

The theater moved to a modern building in 2008. Now his repertoire includes performances of various genres: dramas and comedies, vaudevilles and musicals, plays by domestic and foreign classics, modern productions. The theater constantly goes on tour, takes part in major theater festivals and competitions, the performances are highly appreciated by the country's leading theater critics and, most importantly, the audience.

The Cathedral of the Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign” in the Siberian Baroque style is one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in the city; it looks very festive thanks to its rich decor and blue-white facades. This cathedral took a total of one and a half centuries to build. The stone church on the site of a burnt wooden church in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “The Sign” was founded in 1768 and, due to lack of funds, was built until 1801, when the main one, the Znamensky throne, was consecrated. In the middle of the 19th century, a reconstruction of the church was carried out, and in 1901–1904, at the expense of merchants and patrons, three more chapels were added to the church: in honor of the Mother of God Quick to Hear, St. John Chrysostom and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The building has remained in this form to this day. The cathedral was closed in 1929, the building was used as a transit prison, then MTS, and in 1944 it was returned to believers.

In Tyumen there are churches of other faiths: the Catholic Church of St. Joseph the Betrothed , the Madregot synagogue , the Cathedral Mosque named after. Umar ibn al-Khattab and others.

There are monuments to historical figures and events: this is the monument to the “Founding of Tyumen” and the monument to “Cossack Ermak and his comrades” on Historical Square, monuments on the Tura embankment and a monument to Grigory Rasputin on the territory of the Apothecary Garden. There are monuments to famous personalities whose lives were connected with the Tyumen land: the famous intelligence officer Nikolai Kuznetsov, a major entrepreneur and philanthropist A. I. Tekutyev , one of the discoverers of Tyumen oil Yu. G. Ervieu, singer Yuri Gulyaev and others.

There are many monuments to those who died during the Great Patriotic War, these are memorials in the Historical Park and on Memory Square , the “Monument to Home Front Workers” in the Olympic Park and the touching monument to “Tyumen school students who did not return from the war” in Farewell Square.

There are monuments to “Father” and “Mom” and the “Tree of Happiness” - a symbol of well-being in family life; monuments to a traffic police inspector, a zemstvo doctor, a postman, a janitor, and even a monument to a stray dog . But the most unusual monuments are installed in the Siberian Cats Park .

Everyone knows the story about the rescue of the Hermitage from the rats that bred in Leningrad during the siege, by Siberian cats. About 5,000 cats were sent from Siberia to help Leningrad. In Tyumen, a mobilization of cats was announced, a whole carload of them was collected - 238 of them, many donated their pets to a good cause. So it’s not just that in 2008 this park was created in Tyumen and monuments to cats were erected.

Yalutorovsk is called “a small city of big people.” Not only because the city is the birthplace of the famous Gulliver chocolates , which are still produced at the chocolate factory here.

A highlight every year is the Maslenitsa festival, where the largest giant pancake in Russia is baked . The three-meter-long treat is officially included in the Russian book of records, and today anyone can take part in the process of making large meter-long pancakes in the Yalutorovsky prison tourist complex.

And microdistrict Novo-Patrushevo...

Although, it must be admitted, new buildings mostly appear on the outskirts, and there is still a catastrophic lack of kindergartens and schools there. But this problem will also be resolved over time - the authorities promise many new educational institutions, but the administration in Tyumen is clearly adequate. All complaints and suggestions regarding territories, by the way, are accepted on a public portal.
