Detailed map of the Pskov region with districts, cities, villages

The population of the Pskov region is more than 600,200 people as of 2019. The previous year (2018) showed a decrease in numbers by approximately 6 thousand people. Now the situation of the urban population is assessed taking into account depopulation factors. A significant outflow of young people and natural population decline have a negative impact on the current situation. The 90s hit demographics especially hard; the cities of the Pskov region became record holders in terms of outflow. Pskov remains the largest populated area. A special feature of the region is the large number of rural settlements, now there are more than 8 thousand of them. At the same time, it can be noted that more than a thousand villages are actually empty. Among the national composition of the Pskov region, Russians predominate, followed by Belarusians and Jews. National minorities include Latgalians, Finns, and Germans.

Pskov is the largest city in the Pskov region

As you might guess, the Pskov region simply does not have million people. However, the capital can really be called a large city. It is inhabited by socially active people who, in different ways, try to deal with the problems familiar to all densely populated cities. Topping the list is the problem of traffic congestion. Traffic jams occur due to the large number of cars. But this problem is typical only for morning and evening. The situation is more complicated with kindergartens.

While the Zapskovye region is characterized by a developed infrastructure, the rest cannot boast of an abundance of preschool educational institutions. There is an alternative - paid kindergartens. However, not every family can afford this. The situation with schools is a little better. The general situation is that queues are built mainly for nursery groups. An important advantage for religious families will be the availability of appropriate schools. Pskov has a theological school, which has an icon-painting school. There are many sports facilities:

  • rowing training base;
  • swimming pools and complexes;
  • climbing school;
  • tourism schools;
  • motorcycle fan clubs.

Pskov retains the status of a quiet city, so the population here is quite comfortable. But the problems characteristic of small settlements make themselves felt. Especially in terms of the level of medical care and the number of doctors per thousand people.

Velikiye Luki is a support center for social services

More than 60% of Velikiye Luki residents are able to work. Typical problems of a non-regional settlement did not bypass Velikiye Luki. Families often have to wait in line for a long time to send their children to kindergarten. The situation is less tense in schools.

There are preschool educational institutions of a combined type, where children are taught sports and taken care of their all-round development. The health care development program has affected the city, so there is the necessary equipment, but there are not enough doctors to serve it. The presence of an ambulance station allows the population to count on timely support. There is a children's city clinic. Traffic jams are not an inherent problem for the city. Traffic congestion occurs only at the entrance and exit.

  • Ostrov is a typical regional city

    The quiet town practically does not stand out among other regional settlements. The local population rarely encounters traffic jams, but is well aware of the worn-out infrastructure. Many people focus their energy on sports. This is facilitated by the promotion of a healthy lifestyle on the part of biathlon). The number of schools and kindergartens is small, and the situation with hospitals is quite difficult. Young people either leave for larger cities or go to serve in a training center where they train future helicopter pilots. It is difficult to talk about employment opportunities in relation to the Island, since there are no important and promising enterprises here.

    Economy and industry of the Pskov region

    The most important part of the region's economy is agriculture. There are more than 500 farms and subsidiary farms in the region that produce dairy and meat products, grow potatoes and other vegetables.

    Light and food industry enterprises operate in the cities. Large factories include the Locomotive Repair Plant and the Electrical Fittings Plant, which can be found on Yandex maps of the Pskov region in the main city of the region and in Velikiye Luki.

    The region's enterprises also produce flour, fabrics, glass products, porcelain, and building materials. The region has a well-developed tourism infrastructure. Numerous recreation centers and hotels welcome guests to the region, as well as restaurants and cafes.

    Nevel is another regional city

    For 2022, according to the population census, more than 15 thousand inhabitants are recorded. Nevel has been characterized by constant outflow for more than 20 years.

    The city is characterized by a transport problem caused by the cancellation of all commuter trains. The once large Nevel-1 station, located on the outskirts, is now practically non-functional. Diesel locomotives have not been repaired for a long time; only cargo can be transported. Because of this, many residents find it difficult to get to neighboring communities. The situation is saved by buses departing from the bus station. Bus service is also irregular.

    Opochka is a small, unremarkable town.

    The unremarkable city of Opochka survived the occupation by Nazi troops. This is an absolutely quiet town that has a lot of history. There are very few kindergartens, schools and hospitals here. Therefore, the city is experiencing all the same problems that other settlements in the region face. The population is employed in a food production plant, a clothing factory and a bakery. Locals are proud of the natural juices that are also produced here. Naturally, in Opochka there are few things to do for young people, so many rush to move to Moscow and other million-plus cities.

    The main problem of the Pskov region is the large outflow of population. It remains one of the poorest regions in the country. Underdeveloped industry and agriculture cannot provide the required level. The future of the Pskov region remains a big question, since the local government does not have a clearly expressed youth policy. Great emphasis is placed on sports, creative activities, and the development of professional guidance, which formally should help to develop, but do not at all imply that young people will remain to live and work in Pskov. Even military service is not perceived as promising in comparison with units located in other regions of Russia.

    Large cities 100-250 thousand people

    Coat of arms of Pskov

    Pskov

    Population 208,145 people (2016). The only big city in the region and the regional center. One of the oldest Russian cities, mentioned since 903, originally as Pleskov. From the middle of the 13th to the beginning of the 18th century, it was one of the most important and largest fortresses of the Russian state, sometimes semi-independent.

    The city has practically become one of the symbols of Russia thanks, first of all, to the heroism of its defenders, as well as the power of its walls. It has the status of a city of military glory.
