Konchezersky Iron Smelting Plant
Address: Konchezero village, st. Soviets.
Konchezersky Iron Smelting Plant is a man-made landmark near Kondopoga. Founded by Peter I in 1707. In the 18th century, this enterprise supplied almost the entire country's smelting production with alloys. It closed in 1905; during the USSR, its premises were used for agricultural purposes.
Nowadays, the once prosperous plant is a ruin. The main building still stands, as well as several brick buildings and what remains of the church. You can also see what remains of the water canal.
There are no organized excursions to this place, but this does not prevent researchers of ruins and ruins from constantly studying the premises of the plant. The Konchezersky iron smelter is a monument of industrial architecture.
Here in the village of Konchezero there is an ancient Trinity Church, built in 1866.
The first mention of Kondopoga
The first mention of Kondopoga dates back to 1495. This discovery was made by G.Ya., a physics teacher at secondary school No. 1 in Kondopoga. Pudyshev. He discovered the following entry in the Scribe Book of the Obonezh Pyatina: “Village. in Kondopoga...Levonkovskaya, according to Yuryev’s letter from Konstantinovich [Saburov], was empty...” And since Saburov was a scribe in 1495-1496, it means that this entry is an echo of the lost descriptions of Kondopoga for 1495. Thus, one can exclaim: “Be proud, fellow countrymen! Kondopoga is 500 years old!”
Kivach Nature Reserve
Website: www.zapkivach.ru Ticket price: 150 rubles, 75 rubles. - pensioners, schoolchildren, students, free - children under 7 years old. Excursions are paid additionally depending on the chosen program.
Kivach is the oldest nature reserve in Karelia. Its territory is strictly guarded - picking mushrooms and berries, fishing, and making fires is prohibited here. There is a nature museum here, where you can look at stuffed animals of various forest animals and get acquainted with rare insects. The park also has a small arboretum, a souvenir shop and a cafe.
The main attraction of the reserve is, of course, its magnificent waterfall, which many guests of this protected area strive to see. The Kivach waterfall was formed by the fall of the Suna River. The total height is 10.4 meters.

Origin of the city's name
There are many versions of the origin of the name “Kondopoga”. In the book “Riddles of Karelian toponymy” G. Kert and N. Mamontov, two bases are distinguished: “kond” and “poga”, each of which has its own toponymic correspondence. Thus, “konda” is a powerful resinous pine without knots; “Kondovy” – ancient, durable, solid; “Konda” is a sandy, elevated shore. Karelian “kondii”, Vepsian “kondi”, Finnish “kontio” mean “bear”. And the Karelian word “kontu”, Finnish “kontu”, Vepsian “kond” - “peasant yard”. The Sami word “kondokk” means “reindeer land, reindeer catching”. The word “poga”, associated with the Karelian “pond”, Vepsian “pokd” and Finnish “pohja”, means “base”, “bottom”, “extreme part of the bay”.
Each of these concepts could become the basis for the name “ Kondopoga”
“. Another interpretation of this name is given by N.P. Kutkov. He writes that the historically established border between the Shuisky and Kizhi churchyards cut off the northern (main) part of Kondopoga from the extended southern part. In this phenomenon lies the key to decryption. The Baltic-Finnish “kond”, meaning “peasant yard, farm”, combined with “pohja” - “far corner”, which on Russian soil turned into “pogu”, gave the name “Kondopoga”, translated as “konda in the far corner” . 'This is confirmed by local historian from Petrozavodsk N.P. Kutkov and Candidate of Historical Sciences I.A. Chernyakova.
Ukshozero
Ukshozero, like many natural attractions of Kondopoga, is located in the vicinity of the city. Local residents simply call it Uksha. This is a small, irregularly shaped body of water connected by a narrow channel to Lake Surgub. Uksha is interesting because about one and a half dozen picturesque islands are scattered across its surface, where fishermen, kayakers and “savages” with tents like to spend time.
The shores of Ukshozero were absolutely untouched by the influence of civilization. The forest here is located almost at the very edge of the water, and the shores are rocky, with occasional coarse sand. But still, those who are more inclined towards a civilized holiday can find several guest houses on the banks of the Uksha that can be rented in advance.
You can also rent a pleasure boat here. The waters of the lake, although they may seem cool to a resident of the middle zone, are gladly used by local residents who are not spoiled by the heat for swimming.
City streets
In Kondopoga, the only city in Karelia, there is a street named after the teacher - Sergei Shezhemsky.
Walk around the city (Kondopoga)
When we walk through our city of Kondopoga, we admire the sight of each of our streets. In winter, the branches of the trees are covered with white snow, and against this snow-white background, red-breasted bullfinches are very noticeable. On a winter day the city is very bright and clear. When you walk along the streets, you want to smile at passersby to share your opinion about the beautiful city. Night Kondopoga is beautifully illuminated. Every corner of our city is full of light, and you don’t have to be afraid to go out in the evening. Our city has many wonderful places where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful views. It seems to us that we live in the most beautiful city. Authors: Shmyga Yana and Tugunova Yulia
Proletarskaya street (Kondopoga)
This is the main street of the city . On it is the oldest school in the city - school No. 1, which celebrated its anniversary this year, it turned 70 years old. On this street there is a monument to the heroes of the Soviet Union - our fellow countrymen. In the park of this school there is a monument to G.R. .Derzhavin. Proletarskaya Street ends with the station square.
The central street of the city stretches from the shore of Lake Onega to Nigozero.
Kalinina Avenue (Kondopoga)
Kalinin Avenue is the greenest street in the city.
Mount Sampo
Mount Sampo is another place in the Kondopoga region that is definitely worth a visit. A person who climbs it has magnificent views of local forests, Lake Konchezero and countless islands on it. It is especially beautiful here in early autumn, when Karelian forests are painted in all shades of yellow and red.
Mount Sampo is considered a place of power. There is a belief that any wish made at the top of Mount Sampo will certainly come true. There is also a wishing pine growing here - tourists hang small pieces of fabric on it and also make a wish. Some people go further and leave their entire clothing, such as underwear, here. Which certainly spoils this place and violates the atmosphere of beauty.
It should be noted that Mount Sampo is not loved by the local authorities - the stairs to the top are increasingly falling into disrepair. Despite the popularity of the place, there is no toilet here, and local guides remove garbage so as not to scare away tourists. It is not recommended to come here in rainy weather, as you may slip and fall. It is not safe for children to climb the mountain.
Comments
- ↑ The Karelian name of the city is a compound word, and therefore the first syllables of both of its components are stressed ( Kóndupòhju
);

]. The Russian name of the city in Karelia is pronounced with emphasis on the first syllable. In other regions it is more often pronounced with stress on the third syllable, since this stress position is typical for four-syllable words in Russian. In the normative “Dictionary of Proper Names of the Russian Language” by F. L. Ageenko, the main stress is indicated on the third syllable and the secondary (minor) stress on the first.

Religion
Kondopoga Assumption Church (1774) burned down on August 10, 2022
Historically, the most significant religion in Kondopoga is Orthodox Christianity. In 1774, the Assumption Church was built (burnt down on August 10, 2022). The main Orthodox church in the city is the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In addition, there is the Sretenskaya Church, which from 1995 to 2009 was the only Orthodox church in Kondopoga. All Orthodox churches belong to the Petrozavodsk and Karelian diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate).
In 1949-1950, a significant group of Ingrian Finns came to the Karelo-Finnish SSR, some of whom began to settle their lives in Kondopoga. Most of those who came professed the Lutheran faith. In 1990, the Kondopoga Evangelical Lutheran parish of the Church of Ingria was registered. By 2004, the Lutheran parish built a church in the city. This is the largest Lutheran church in Karelia.
Reviews about the holiday
Kondopoga is not a city that will surprise tourists with an abundance of historical attractions, especially after the only relic, the Assumption Church, was destroyed in a fire. Connoisseurs of antiquities, as well as those looking for noisy, sophisticated entertainment, will find nothing here for themselves.
This land of lakes and forests invites you to enjoy the landscape wonders of the Russian North or take part in active outdoor activities. Nature in the area gives all its riches for health and recreation.

Ice Palace
Over the past two decades, much has been done to develop tourism in Karelia. For this purpose, new cultural and sports facilities were built in many cities of the republic. Among them, the Ice Palace, which seats 1,850 spectators, is especially noteworthy. This original structure made of glass and concrete adorns the city center and, along with the Assumption Church, is considered its architectural symbol.

Ecology
The main concern of local environmentalists is the work of the Kondopoga plant, the emissions of which, like any industrial enterprise, have a negative impact on the environment in the area of health resorts.
The modernization program of the plant's heat and power complex has made it possible to significantly reduce harmful emissions. Since 2015, Kondopoga has been excluded from the list of environmentally unfavorable points.
