First day Second day Third day Reviews, routes and tips from tourists Where to stay in Vladikavkaz Excursions |
The Caucasus has always been an attractive point on the map. Even if you were not there, you probably heard about him or imagined him by reading the impressive lines of the classics. For a modern tourist, the Caucasus is interesting for its nature and diversity of cultural heritage. It is impossible not to take into account Vladikavkaz, a city whose foundation at the end of the 18th century marked Russia’s ability to “own the Caucasus.”
You can do a lot in 3 days in Vladikavkaz: get to know the best sights, feel genuine hospitality and find the most delicious Ossetian pies. It’s also possible to see the amazing nature in the surrounding area; be sure to go out for the magnificence of the mountain peaks, incredible air and the wild character of the local rivers - they will not leave a single person indifferent.
First day
Your path will not pass by a large city with an airport, bus and railway stations, even if you plan to devote more time to a trip to the mountains. Stop for a day in the capital: Vladikavkaz can surprise you with its beautiful architecture, interesting history, show interesting things in museums, and provide pleasant places for walks.

Peace Avenue
Prospekt Mira is a business card, the main street of Vladikavkaz, where every guest rushes to see beautiful mansions against the backdrop of the mountains. Not every city in Russia has such a stunning cityscape. The houses belonged to famous merchants or city institutions; many are architectural monuments. The nearest mountain is called Stolovaya , another day you can go to its peak.
The only transport on the avenue is a tram, the rest is given over to pedestrians. This is a convenient place for a walk and relaxation, combining the study of ancient architecture, visits to museums and tasting of national cuisine.
To get acquainted with the history of the Republic, go to the National Museum , and to see the Caucasus through the eyes of local artists - to the Tuganov Art Museum , located in a wonderful mansion with a turquoise-golden facade - you definitely won’t miss it. The fountain with the local hero “Nart Soslan”, the monument to the policeman and the monument to M. Bulgakov are also easily visible.

Terek embankment
Vladikavkaz is located on the banks of the stormy Terek. The stream flowing from the mountains is especially impressive in spring and summer, when glaciers melt high in the mountains. The Terek embankment is a place that is worth seeing even if you come for just a couple of hours. From the promenade on both sides of the river and several bridges - Kirovsky, Chugunny, Kladki pedestrian bridge - a cool panorama of the river with views of the mountains opens up.

On the left bank near the Chugunny Bridge you can see a huge equestrian monument to General I. Pliev . The tall, proudly frozen commander on horseback is a recognizable symbol of the city.
Another iconic building of the capital is also located on the left side of the embankment. This is a Sunni mosque built at the beginning of the 20th century. The painted facade with many volumetric elements noticeably distinguishes it from similar ones. By the way, this is the only mosque in the city; there are more Orthodox churches in the capital of Ossetia.

On the right bank of the Terek you can see a mosque-like building - once upon a time it really was like that, now it houses the Vladikavkaz Planetarium . It was recently opened after reconstruction and surprises guests with an interesting exhibition about space not only inside, but also outside.
On the same side of the river, guests encounter an entire composition dedicated to the founding of Vladikavkaz. On Shtyba Square, opposite the symbolic fortress wall, there is a monument to D. Bugulov , the parent of the first settlement on the site of Vladikavkaz.

Park of Culture
The central park of culture and recreation of the capital of Ossetia is also located next to the Terek, it occupies the right bank in the central part of the city. Walking along Mira Avenue, it is difficult not to see its entrance, marked by two symmetrical stepped steles. The history of the place goes back more than a hundred years. Previously, it was the most popular place in the city with rich opportunities for recreation and leisure.

The basic layout with stairs and a fountain, a pond with an island, has been preserved from past times. Lost in the shade of the trees is the mansion of the musician I. Steingel, which is now occupied by the park administration, and the gazebo named after General Erofeev, the founder of the park. The garden once bore his name, but now it is named after the Ossetian artist Kosta Khetagurov. The monument to the poet sitting on a bench is located opposite the entrance in the middle of the alley on Mira Avenue.
Today, locals and city guests come to the park to stroll along the green alleys, admire the brightness of the flower beds, and admire the landscape along the river. On the pond you can feed the swans, ride a boat or catamaran, and if you go to the northern border of the territory, you can find even more fun attractions for adults and children. For example, the city Ferris wheel, which offers views of the park, the fast Terek and the mountains in the distance.

Memorial Park
Glory Memorial Park is a beautiful, well-groomed area against the backdrop of mountains in the southern half of Vladikavkaz. It is dedicated to difficult things: the memory of participants in the Revolution of 1917, the Second World War, other military conflicts in the Caucasus, as well as the revered people of Alania who have passed away and the victims of the tragedy in Beslan in 2004. On the central alley there is a column with a high relief, scenes of the military valor of the Ossetians. It is crowned with the figure of St. George the Victorious on horseback, the revered patron of the Ossetian land. In the depths of the park, the Church of St. John the Warrior is being built.
At the entrance from the intersection of Kosta Avenue and Krasnogvardeiskaya Street there is a monument to the annexation of Ossetia to Russia. This is a large sculptural composition consisting of figures of the Russian Empress and Ossetian ambassadors framed by a semicircular arch with thematic paintings. A memorable event for the Republic took place in 1774 under Catherine II.

Crime
Vladikavkaz does not stand out in the all-Russian crime rate. In the 90s there were many kidnappings for ransom, and there were criminal clashes between various groups. Among the high-profile crimes of recent years, one can note the murder of the current mayor of Vladikavkaz, Vitaly Karaev, and the murder of the former mayor, Kazbek Pagiev. Kazbek Pagiev was killed in 2008 on December 31 in Vladikavkaz. The murder happened around half past ten in the morning. As the neighbors said, the mayor was in a company Audi A6; he was slowly driving it out of the yard of his house, located on Marine Corps Street. When the car drove between high-rise buildings in a narrow passage, two people armed with machine guns with silencers ran up to it. One of the killers shouted to the driver, Kazbek Pagiev, to duck down, and they immediately began shooting at the mayor, who was sitting in the front seat. The official was killed on the spot. One of the bullets mortally wounded his driver.
It is impossible not to note the terrorist attacks, of which several occurred in Vladikavkaz. The biggest was the explosion at the Central Market, which occurred on March 19, 1999, when more than 50 people died. Another terrorist attack that took many lives occurred on November 6, 2008. Then they blew up a minibus at a crowded stop at noon, when there were a lot of people there. Near the market, shopping centers, university. In total, from 1999 to 2011, there were 11 cases of terrorist attacks in the city.
In 2011, the famous poet and public figure Shamil Dzhikaev was killed by a Muslim fanatic in Vladikavkaz. His body was found by police at approximately 15.00 near the village of Redant. The police went to the place indicated by unknown persons who called the duty station. Near the support of the cable car lay a corpse with a severed head barely hanging on to the neck. There were no signs of a struggle around. They just brought the corpse to that place by car and threw it away. The reason for his murder was a poem that some Muslims considered offensive to their religion. The verse was written after an incident with pilgrims from Ingushetia and Chechnya who performed the Hajj and desecrated their graves. Dzhikaev's alleged killer was soon killed because he offered armed resistance.
Corruption is a big problem in the city. Almost all issues when interacting with the authorities must be resolved with the help of a bribe. Family and friendly ties play an important role.
Second day
After walking around the city, be sure to head to the mountains. Steep and gentle, green and snow-covered, smooth and bizarre - they captivate with their diversity and unshakable grandeur at any time of the year. Undoubtedly, this is the best attraction in the vicinity of Vladikavkaz.
Simple in terms of transport and incredible in terms of impressions - the route to the Kurtatinsky Gorge , also called Fiagdonsky. Its convenience is that many points of interest to tourists are accessible by car; there is no need to travel 5-10-15 km on foot to see only one. Guests without a car ask for a car with a driver or excursions. The visit is often complemented by two other gorges - Dargavsky and Karmadonsky , making the path circular.
Road through the Kadargavan Canyon Photo: © Zhenya Pyanova
The Kurtatinskoye Gorge is not only a narrow passage in the mountains, constrained by overhanging rocks, as such an object is usually presented. The gorge along the Fiagdon River - the deep narrow Kadargavan canyon, and gentle mountain slopes with green valleys, and high ridges, among which tiny villages with ancient towers lie. The diversity of the landscape and its richness will make your head spin at the end of the day.
Kadargavan Canyon
The route through the gorge usually begins with the Kadargavan Canyon - a gorge in which Fiagdon is sandwiched by rocks stretching into the sky. Their uneven outlines, various sizes and sometimes incredible placement are very impressive. Especially those who are afraid of heights, because the river is boiling below. To explore the canyon along the rocks there is a path called the “Path of Miracles” . There is also a sculpture of a leopard made of mirror mosaic, hiding on one of the stones.
The narrowest part of the gorge perfectly met the requirements of defense, so a fortress appeared immediately behind it.

Dzivgis Fortress
The wall, made of stones and seemingly growing out of Mount Kariukhoh, may be difficult to notice right away. It is located on the right side of the road just beyond the canyon. Look for it at the level of the semi-abandoned village of Dzivgis. Hundreds of people could live and defend themselves in the caves behind the fortress wall. Its construction dates back to the Middle Ages. Among the ruins of residential buildings there are no less venerable towers, family crypts and a small church of St. George the Victorious.

Lats and Tsmiti
Small villages on the territory of which cultural evidence of past years are still preserved are Lats and Tsmiti. They are located opposite each other on different sides of the river and are most often perceived as part of the most “living” Upper Fiagdon.
Lac lies on the right bank. Guests are greeted by a few inhabited houses built on the remains of ancient stone walls. In addition to towers, residential buildings, sanctuaries and tombs, among the important attractions of the village: nykhas - a place of public meetings in the earlier structure of the society of the Ossetian people and tsyrts - stone steles, memorials of those years, usually tombstones, decorated with a variety of ornaments.
Crypts in the Fiagdon Gorge Photo: © Zhenya Pyanova
Tsmiti is a now uninhabited city on the high left bank of the Fiagdon, which flourished in the 14th–17th centuries. Many tourists come to wander among the ruins of towers and crypts and experience the centuries-old history. Petroglyphs can be found on one of the towers. Higher up the mountain slope there is also Khalgon, where two family towers have been preserved. Legends speak of the complex relationships between the families who lived there.

Monastery
Behind the village of Lac, along the left bank of the river, there is another one - Hidikus. In it you get acquainted with the Orthodox male Holy Dormition Alan Monastery. Thanks to its Byzantine style and stone construction, it blends harmoniously with the surrounding mountains and ancient ruins, although it was built at the beginning of the second millennium - quite recently. The monastery contains a copy of the main icon of the Republic - the Mother of God of Mozdok, the original of which was lost after the Revolution.
The story of the appearance, wanderings and disappearance of this icon is mysterious and interesting. It is known that it was a gift from the Georgian Queen Tamara, who lived at the turn of the 12th–13th centuries. The place of the first location of the shrine is considered to be a temple in the vicinity of the village of Kharisjin, which is further from Khidikus on the left bank. The small, whitewashed stone house that it resembles is located on a hill next to the junction of the Sajildon and Fiagdon rivers. The estimated time of its construction is the 12th century.

Observation platforms
Where can you simply admire the wonderful mountain pictures without going into the vicissitudes of history? At the most popular viewing points of the Kurtatinsky Gorge. Looking at the photos of other tourists, you will definitely see a nice bench with an incredible view of the mountain peaks or a large swing flying into the distance above the parted peaks.
A bench on a cliff with the symbolic inscription “Happiness is just around the corner” is located on one of the peaks of the left bank of the river. From the village of Kharisjin you need to follow the direction of the Arkhon Pass, after which turn left. In good weather, the dry road is entirely passable for four-wheel drive vehicles; otherwise, leave the car 2–3 km before at the pass and walk.

The swing is a more accessible option and lies next to the gravel road Fiagdon - Dargavs, 3 km from the first. The attraction only seems scary: the illusion of an abyss underneath is created by the skillful placement of the swings. There is also a bench nearby where you can spend a long time enchanted by the clouds sliding over the mountain tops.
Immediately outside the village, at the exit to the swing, there are two towers Kurt and Taga . If you are not planning to explore the others above, wanting to reduce time and quickly get to the Dargavs, then these will easily fit into the route, since they are located next to the road. Continuing towards Fazikau you will reach Dargavs and the fantastic valley of waterfalls.

Waterfalls
Waterfalls in the Midagrabindon River gorge are a famous landmark near Vladikavkaz. The river valley makes a fantastic impression: on both sides large and small water streams flow down from the rocks. The weather also plays a role in this: the water shimmers, sparkling with sparks, or thick clouds cover the peaks, creating the atmosphere of a lost world. There are 6–8 large waterfalls. Some may be inaccessible in the fall due to melted snow or, conversely, very cold weather when the water freezes. For this reason, the waterfalls are visited in summer and early autumn.
You can drive up close in a passable car; you only have to walk a short distance. From Fazikau you need to turn right towards the village of Jimara, continuing the route higher up the gorge. If the weather is acceptable and you really love natural beauty, leave more time for the waterfalls or even devote a separate day to them and Dargavs.

Another option in the same area is the Ring Falls. It is located in a small valley adjacent to the Kurtatinsky gorge at its very beginning. The waterfall is unusual in its appearance: a large stream 6 m high falls through a round hole in the rock.

Dargavsky necropolis
Picturesquely scattered houses along the mountainside, covered with stepped roofs, are nothing more than an ancient Ossetian cemetery. This fact fills the heads of visitors with different emotions, most often horror and awe, but interest in the beauty and skill of the buildings invariably prevails.
The crypts are clearly visible from nearby roads; you will definitely recognize them if you have ever seen them in a photo. The buildings date back to the 14th–18th centuries. Through the small windows of the buildings you can see the remains of those buried. Some of the objects from the necropolis are kept in the National Museum of North Ossetia-Alania.

Karmadon Gorge
If there is time, return to the capital will be organized along another road - through the Karmadon Gorge. In gloomy weather, it often brings to mind its tragic history, when an avalanche killed more than a hundred people. In good times, it reminds little of the events of twenty years ago, covering them up with the beauty of nature. For this reason, tourist reviews about Karmadon are often contradictory.
There are no stunning sights on its territory. Only in the narrowest place do the overhanging rocks strike fear into the especially impressionable. Places where you can honor the memory of the dead: a monument to the victims of the glacier, located on a hill below the abandoned village of Nizhny Kani, a memorial plaque with members of the film crew of S. Bodrov Jr. next to the road and a large memorial at the entrance to Vladikavkaz in front of the village of Gizel.

The third day
The number of attractive places near Vladikavkaz, which are easily accessible from the city, is so great that even for a three-day weekend you will have to choose what to give your preference to. We offer three destinations to choose from for this wonderful day, but in fact there are more if we take into account the whole of Alanya.
Option one
By car, by taxi or with an excursion, everyone can go to the next gorge - Alagirskoye (Ardonskoye) the Tseyskoye gorge lying beyond it . There are other remarkable places here, many of them are also iconic for North Ossetia, and attractive mountain panoramas in their own way.
Monument to Uastirdzhi Photo: © Julia Alisova
A major road passes through the gorge - the Trans-Caucasian Highway . The first attraction of the route is located right above it, near the village of Tamisk: a huge equestrian monument to Uastirdzhi incredibly hangs on the edge of the cliff. The hero of the Narst epic, in the Orthodox interpretation, Saint George the Victorious, is the patron saint of those who do not lack courage and courage.
The Tseyskoye Gorge is a side branch of the Alagirsky Gorge, running along the Tseydon River. Several camp sites and hotels have been built here, and the Tsey ski resort . Mount Monk grows like a tall cap on the spit of Tseydon and Skazdon , which is where its name comes from.
Mount Monk in Tsey Photo: © Victor Bashkir
An important attraction is the Rekom sanctuary , located on the left bank of Tseydon. This has been a famous place of worship since ancient times. You can get to it from the road near the resort. The small wooden house was built without nails, with animal skulls and an offering bowl attached to the outside. Don't be confused by its newness - the previous building burned down, and only a few years later a new one was rebuilt. People go inside Recom only on major national holidays. Only men can visit it, reminder signs persistently remind you of this. Women should not break centuries-old covenants; their sanctuary is nearby.
Sanctuary Rekom Photo: © Sergey Sinatorov
The Gakon-Akhsardzan (Shagatsikomdon) waterfall runs in a narrow crevice not far from the sanctuary . The path to it passes behind the “Vertical” camp site and the staircase cordon. The route is simple, no more than a kilometer long, although with constant changes in altitude. The waterfall has several steps; its path is accompanied by huge boulders that fell during mudflows and avalanches.
There are two glaciers in the Tseysky Gorge; visitors can get to them in summer and early autumn. Dedicate part of your day to one of them.
Tseysky glacier Photo: © Irina Porunova
The eco-trail to the Tseykoy glacier begins on the left bank behind the Ministry of Emergency Situations station. You need to budget at least 5-6 hours for the route if you want to complete it entirely. The trail passes through the forest, above which tower massive mountain walls, and overcomes mountain streams and scatterings of boulders. Some stones are amazing in size, reaching 20 meters in circumference. They were moved by a glacier hundreds of years ago.
The Fairytale Glacier is located on the other side of Monk Mountain. It’s easier to see: the resort’s cable car leads to the observation deck. The possibility of lifting must be clarified by calling the GLC; it largely depends on the weather.
A pleasant end to the day on the way back will be a visit to the hot springs in the village of Upper Biragzang . A hotel operates in conjunction with them.
Skazsky glacier Photo: © Irina Porunova
Option two
Climbing Table Mountain is an idea for the most active tourists who have experience in mountain climbing, the appropriate strength and the desire to add to the list of achieved peaks. Stolovaya, Madhokh in Ossetian or Myat Loam in Ingush, is the same mountain with a flat truncated top that constantly appears against the backdrop of the city landscapes of Vladikavkaz. Altitude above sea level - 3003 m.
Geographically, this is the closest option, and not the most difficult for active tourists. To climb, you need a fine day, comfortable trekking shoes and suitable clothing. The route starts from the village. Beini in Ingushetia, the distance to it from Vladikavkaz is 30 km. The ascent will take 6–7 hours, it is not complicated by anything special, except for gaining altitude along rocky mountain paths. On the way to the top, you will meet towers and the Myat-Seli temple ; from the height, on a clear day, views of Vladikavkaz and the Dzheirakh Gorge will open. The descent is carried out in the opposite direction along the same road.

Option three
Another easily accessible option that will complement 3 days in Vladikavkaz well is the famous tower cities of Ingushetia. This is a different region, but a convenient road there passes through the capital of Ossetia, and the distance from it to the most famous of them is only 30–60 km, which allows you to leisurely see the amazing mountain cities in one day.
The entrance to the neighboring republic begins with the symbolic Gates to Ingushetia . The nearest tower town of Erzi lies on the mountainside near the village of Olgeti. Others are more remote, but located close to each other. The most famous are Egikal and Vovnushki , a single temple of Thaba-Erda . Between them, on the ledges of the mountain valley, you will meet dozens of similar ones.
Thaba-Erdy Temple Photo: © Victor Bashkir
The history of the towers has not been fully studied. They amaze not only with their appearance against the backdrop of the wonderful mountain landscape. They surprise with their good preservation, variety of functions, unusual construction technology and location. The last one that stands out is Vovnushki, standing impregnably on high rocks. Hundreds of towers on this trip diversify the picturesque views of the Assinsky gorge , which runs along the Assa River just beyond Egikal, along the road towards the central part of Ingushetia.

Reviews, routes and tourist tips
Traveling for a short or long weekend is nothing new. Every year, Vladikavkaz is becoming an increasingly popular destination for this, because there are enough opportunities to spend it here more than once or even twice. In the vicinity of the city there are many interesting places and countless landscapes, different every day and every month of the year.
In reviews, tourists reveal their routes, indicate the time frame for reaching the most remote places, show living conditions and the most popular locations. They will become a real assistant in planning your own trip. For example, they tell how they spent 3 days:
- Julia Alisova in “A route through mountainous Ossetia - with waterfalls, cloudy distances, an ancient necropolis and the Karmadon Gorge” and “Only mountains can be better than mountains.”
- Maxim Yashkin in “Weekend in North Ossetia”.

Excursions
Excursion programs offered by Vladikavkaz guides will be a profitable way to see the capital of North Ossetia - Alania and its surroundings. If you just go out into the city and walk on your own, then going to the mountains can be difficult. Many authentic corners in the gorges of Ossetia are difficult to get to by bus, and if you don’t see it, you can’t help it. An organized trip will take into account your personal interests or offer you to see the most popular places if you rely on the experience of those in the know and are not ready to organize it yourself.
A tour of the city will reveal the history of its foundation, the construction of the most beautiful houses along Mira Avenue , and will introduce you to the opportunities that open to tourists in this Caucasian city.
Trips to the Kurtatinskoye , Digorskoye or Tseyskoye gorge will leave the best memories of high mountains, sunlit or covered in haze, wandering along the tops of the clouds, will delight you with medieval fortresses and towers, and will amaze you with the truly mountain tranquility of life. Excursions to Ingushetia are also organized from Vladikavkaz: ancient towers that form entire cities are located very close, but are no less interesting objects in the entire Caucasus.

City infrastructure
The sanitary and hygienic condition of urban transport undoubtedly leaves much to be desired. In order to somehow improve the situation, it would be necessary to introduce penalties for both drivers and passengers for violations. This can significantly lead to improved transport conditions.
Factories, processing and waste disposal plants should be built or resumed in the city. It is necessary to install high-quality treatment facilities at all enterprises (for example, as was done at Electrozinc) that pollute the environment (exhaust gases, waste, combustion products). Install even more garbage containers in the courtyards of multi-story buildings, and organize regular garbage collection in private homes. Install more trash cans on city streets, particularly in crowded places. Of course, people themselves should throw garbage in the trash can, and not next to it; if they do not keep clean, these persistent violators should be fined.
In the city, many are actively constructing private households and renovating apartments. Neither municipal authorities nor house managements inform where to take out the garbage, and people take their garbage to the Sapitskaya booth area and throw it out there. State of improvement: the aesthetics of the urban environment is an indicator of the level of spiritual and material life of the city; this all speaks about the culture of its population.
In addition, it is necessary to tighten control of the state sanitary inspection and other government bodies over the condition of urban public transport, which is in an unsanitary and disrepair. Violators will be fined, even to the extent of confiscating licenses for this type of service.
The problem of the city is that there are no buses and trolleybuses. Until recently, trolleybuses operated on only two routes, but these were also removed.
