What to visit in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Rostov region

Tourists often drive past Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, as it lies directly on the highway leading to popular Black Sea resorts. However, the provincial city of the Rostov region with a population of about 90 thousand people is worthy of attention in itself - there are many attractions that are worth seeing. Kamensk-Shakhtinsky is already more than three and a half centuries old; it began as the capital Kamenskaya, and in 1929 it became a city. It is located along the banks of the Seversky Donets River.

What to see first in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky

Tourists exploring the expanses of our Motherland must see these signature attractions in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky. First, about them - about those places that you visit in one day of staying in the city.

Karl Marx Avenue

  • Address: Karl Marx Avenue.

One of the main and famous streets of the city, the highway of its historical center. In the pre-Soviet era it was called Donskoy Prospekt. On one of the maps the name Nikolaevsky appears. From here the settlement of the village began, which gave rise to the settlement. Notable townspeople, merchants and wealthy representatives of the Cossacks lived here.

Today, many city attractions are located on Karl Marx Avenue. A walk along it, now bearing a “stereotypical” Soviet name after the famous German philosopher, should definitely be included in your program for visiting the city of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky.

Bike hotel

  • Address: st. Heroes of Pioneers, 91.

Thanks to the transit nature of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, the list of its most famous attractions included objects located at the entrance to the city on the highway itself or not far from it. In 2009, an interesting hotel was opened here, which not only fulfills its direct function of providing overnight accommodation for travelers, but also became one of the “business cards” of the city due to its unusual design.

The hotel is unique - it is the only facility of its kind in Russia, decorated entirely in biker style. Right in the lobby, guests and all curious people can see a large collection of motor vehicles, so in a sense, this is not just a place to stay, but also a museum. At the very entrance to the hotel, the tourist will be greeted by a “ghost rider” - this is an interesting sculptural composition, the “trick” of which is the presence of lighting.

The designers and owners of the establishment cannot deny creativity; not only the appearance of the hotel is of interest, but also the nearby gas station and the Garage cafe; the name corresponds to the spirit of the place, the interior, and the atmosphere. Just like in an old garage, you can find a variety of items here - from motorcycle parts and biker accessories to old gramophone records.

Hotel and Museum “Legends of the USSR”

  • Address: st. Geroev Pionerov, 91V.

The museum function is performed by another object located on the outskirts of the city, at 932 kilometers of the federal highway. The hotel with the nostalgic name “USSR” is located on the upper floors, and the first and ground floors are given over to the “Legends of the USSR” museum, which tells about the history of Soviet life.

Here we collected original everyday items from kitchen utensils to the legendary Chaika car. From the automobile industry, of course, you can see not only the “Seagull”; the collection of cars is very rich. Many techies will be interested in Soviet-era household appliances, reel-to-reel and cassette recorders, tube TVs, record players, striking wall clocks and much more.

The exhibition also includes numismatic items, awards and weapons. This museum, like a time machine, will take us back to a bygone era, people of the older generation will be able to immerse themselves in their childhood and youth, and young people will be able to learn and feel how their fathers and grandfathers lived.

Loga Park

  • Address: Bolshevistskaya st., 77A, Staraya Stanitsa village.

Modern Kamensk-Shakhtinsky has acquired a number of tourist attractions thanks to the indifference and initiative of local entrepreneurs. Most of its most interesting places are privately made. So, in 2012, thanks to businessman Sergei Kurnashenko, a spontaneous unauthorized landfill on the outskirts of the city was not only liquidated and improved, but turned into an interesting park. This is a landscape reserve, a park for walking, and a place for relaxing with children. Loga Park has become a landmark throughout the Rostov region.

On an area of one hectare, the park contains many natural and man-made objects. It is located near bodies of water - river banks and ponds. There are benches and gazebos for relaxation, barbecue areas, and a variety of sculptural compositions and fountains.

When visiting the park, you can find yourself in “Through the Looking Glass” - this is the name of one of its zones, where distorting mirrors are installed near a picturesque waterfall. Children visiting Loga will meet characters from children's fairy tales and have the opportunity to frolic on the playground. The silhouettes of folklore heroes are shaped like some of the boulders in the “Rock Garden” located inside the park. There is also a small zoo with a poultry house. Of course, you won’t find any exotic animals there, but, for example, there are monkeys, deer, and porcupines here.

Prices

Visiting Logopark is free for all visitors; entry closes at dusk.

Weddings are held here according to ancient Russian rituals, accompanied by a folk ensemble. The cost is calculated individually.

For entertainment, there is a 7D cinema with a choice of films lasting 5-7 minutes and several attractions.

Museums and architecture of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky

The city's few museums with examples of architecture are also interesting places for tourists.

Museum of Decorative and Applied Arts and Folk Art

  • Address: ave. Karl Marx, 56.

The local history museum is a must-visit place for curious tourists in any city. In Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, a museum of this profile has been officially called the “museum of decorative and applied arts and folk art” since 2003, and it has been operating since 1969 and was once a historical and local history museum. The range of topics and content of the exhibition are quite familiar.

In total there are 15 collections presented here. The ethnographic part and the history of everyday life is represented by everyday objects, starting from the 19th century up to samples of technology and electronics, the natural and natural sciences - by stuffed animals, the artistic part - by works of sculpture, painting and decorative and applied art. There is an interesting archaeological exhibition, collections of weapons and coins.

Museum of Nature of the Don Region "House of Nature"

  • Address: Pochtovy Lane.

A separate local history museum is dedicated to the natural resources of the Don region in Kamensk-Shakhtinsk, it is called the “House of Nature”. People still often use the old name “Marusina Dacha”.

It is connected with the version that in pre-revolutionary times, a woman named Marya lived in the historical building where the Museum is now located. She was supported by a wealthy patron of noble blood, who built this house for her at the beginning of the last century at his own expense.

A visit to the museum will be a fascinating introduction to the local flora and fauna. The exhibits are combined into thematic compositions. The exhibition of the Kamensk Natural Museum is often called unique; it impresses with its completeness and diversity.

Theme park - museum complex of military equipment "Patriot"

  • Address: Narodnaya street, 39.

Thanks to the efforts of entrepreneur Vladimir Beschastnykh, an open-air museum appeared next to the USSR Hotel, which can be visited by both tourists who came to Kamensk-Shakhtinsky and those who were in transit here. This exhibition of military equipment is a branch of the Patriot Park near Moscow, which is located in Kubinka.

The local museum has been operating since 2022. All exhibits, representing a wide variety of weapons of the past and present, can not only be viewed, but also touched. On the territory there is a hotel stylized with a “military theme”. You can feel like you are in barracks or in comfortable quarters for officers.

The building of the former village administration and noble club

  • Address: Arsenalnaya, 8.

Among the architectural monuments of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky is the house of the mid-19th century, where the administration of the village was located. It was built in a classic style. Since 1871, a noble club operated there.

During Soviet times, the historical building became a children's educational institution and still performs this function. On the site of the Pioneer House there is now a Center for the Development of Creativity for Children and Youth.

Palace of Culture named after Gagarin

  • Address: ave. Karl Marx, 62.

The cultural institution located on the main street is a legacy of the Soviet era. The austere but majestic House of Culture with a colonnade and a triangular roof, decorated with risalits and bas-reliefs, is a building very characteristic of Stalin times, which appeared in the year of the leader’s death - in 1953.

And when in 1961 man mastered space, the cultural center was named after the pioneer - Yu.A. Gagarin. The building still serves its original function and is considered an important center of the city’s cultural life. Nowadays, a modern 3D cinema operates in a building that is “overtly Soviet” in appearance.

Shop of merchant Shevkoplyasov

  • Address: Podtelkova street, 76.

On the former Pokrovskaya Street, now called Podtelkova Street, there is a two-story building. The architectural monument has an interesting and varied history. Initially, it was a store opened by a merchant named Shevkoplyasov at the end of the 19th century.

And already at the beginning of the 20th century, shortly before the revolution, the building was “re-qualified” as a gymnasium for boys. Many worthy people came out of its walls, including physician T.E. Gnilorybov, historian and writer M.A. Alpatov.

Gymnasium building No. 12

  • Address: K. Marx Avenue, 58.

If the men's gymnasium, which was once a store, has already become part of the history of the city, then the women's gymnasium still performs its educational function. Now it is an institution of general education, a gymnasium, bearing the number 12 and accepting students of both sexes in accordance with the modern education system.

The history of the gymnasium as an educational institution for girls began around the turn of the 19th – 20th centuries. It is known that the first issue took place back in 1908.

Then it was located in another building, the date of construction of which remains unknown. But the current building is more than a century old; it was erected in 1913 and is considered an architectural monument. The gymnasium changed numbers and statuses, in different years it bore the names of Frunze and Pushkin, but it remained an educational institution.

Economy

The main directions in the development of the region's economy are agricultural production. Grain and livestock production in the region is represented by 23 agricultural enterprises, of which 16 farms are profitable. There are 289 farms in the region, which are mainly focused on crop production.

Along with agriculture and the processing industry, based on local materials and sources, there are industrial enterprises for the extraction of natural stone, the production of sand-lime brick, and chemical dyes.

Natural attractions of the city and surrounding area

Kamensk-Shakhtinsky is also famous for its richness of nature - both man-made and natural. There are also interesting vacation spots here.

Over the course of a century and a half, the park has been transformed and changed in accordance with the spirit of the eras. In the 1930s, sculptures appeared in the city garden; in the 1960s, the central object became a dance floor, fashionable for that era, where local vocal and instrumental ensembles performed. The garden officially became a park in the 1980s.

Park named after Mayakovsky

  • Address: 48.333215, 40.253741.

The forest park, covering an area of 44 hectares along the bank of the Seversky Donets River, is the largest in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky. At one time, “Marusina Dacha” was built on the outskirts of the forest belt. The well-maintained park dates back to the 1950s.

In Soviet times, a recreation center and a swimming pool were built on its territory, alleys with benches for relaxation were organized, and the object was named after the outstanding futurist poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. The park has become a suitable place to take a walk and relax in nature.

Long Canyon (Long Canyon)

  • Coordinates: 48.229037, 40.349825.

The most picturesque attraction, the result of intervention in nature, refers to the name of the city. Stone was once mined here. During the work in the 1970s, flooding began and an artificial lake was formed, at the bottom of which the working machines that extracted the stone remained forever buried. It was not possible to evacuate all the equipment in time.

The water here is of an unusual, beautiful turquoise color; it is always cold due to its origin - the quarry was filled with groundwater and is replenished with it. Due to its elongated shape, the man-made reservoir was called “Long Canyon” or “Long Canyon”.

Recreation center "Eldorado"

  • Address: Chistoozerny village, Solnechnaya Dolina street, 1.

The recreation center, located on the shore of an artificial reservoir, has a mysterious name. Just as in the case of the Long Canyon, the predecessor of Eldorado Lake was a stone quarry, but unlike the canyon, swimming here is not only possible, but necessary. The territory is well equipped, all facilities are decorated in Indian style.

Such a unique greeting from Latin America. Entertainment awaits tourists on the territory of the recreation center. There are water slides and playgrounds for children. There are billiards, a bathhouse, bars and restaurants with a variety of cuisines, everyone can choose based on their gastronomic preferences.

Central city beach No. 1 “Volna”

  • GPS coordinates: 48.335771, 40.270168.

There are several beaches in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky and its surroundings, they are located both on the river and on other bodies of water. The main and most famous is called “Volna”, has municipal status and occupies an area of more than half a hectare. This section of the coastline became a beach destination back in the 19th century.

In those days there were two areas here: women rested by the water and swam separately from men. In Soviet times, namely in the 30s, the beach began to be developed, the necessary amenities appeared here - booths, benches, canopies in the shape of “mushrooms”. Nowadays, the beach has a well-developed infrastructure and food and retail outlets.

At the foot of the concrete stele are figures of three Red Army soldiers. Nearby, in a thicket in the shape of a five-pointed star, an eternal flame burns.

The complex is complemented by real wartime combat vehicles - T-34 and T-70 tanks. One of them - T-34 - appeared on this site only in 1990, four years after it was raised from the bottom of the river. It turned out that this tank, while participating in hostilities, fell through the ice in 1943.
