Modern Nalchik is an amazingly clean and beautiful settlement, simply surrounded by greenery
Nalchik
- a city in Russia, the capital of the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria. The city is located at the foot of the Main Caucasus Range, at an altitude of 400 to 600 meters above sea level. The toponym “Nalchik” means “horseshoe”, which symbolizes the city’s location in a semicircle of mountains that resembles a horseshoe.
According to various sources, the Nalchik fortress was founded in 1818 or 1822. A military settlement appeared under it in 1838, and in 1863 it was transformed into a settlement. At that time, only 3.5 thousand people lived here. Nalchik received city status in September 1921.
During the Great Patriotic War, Nalchik was occupied by fascist troops, and a significant part of the city was destroyed. Immediately after the liberation of the city in 1943, its restoration began. Already in June 1943, a drama theater and a philharmonic society began operating here. Unfortunately, the joy was overshadowed by another tragic event: in March 1944, on the orders of Joseph Stalin, the forced deportation of the Balkar people to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan began.
The turning point for modern Nalchik was 1997, when active work began to improve it. For two years, the city took prizes in the competition “The Most Comfortable City in Russia.” And today Nalchik is an amazingly clean and beautiful settlement, simply immersed in greenery. Here you can visit several museums - local history, science and technology, arts - as well as theaters: dramatic, national or the so-called “green”, operating in the open air in the city park.

The city is a balneological and mountain climatic resort
. About a quarter of the territory of Nalchik is allocated for a recreational zone. There are about 40 sanatoriums, holiday homes, camp sites and boarding houses located here. In addition to mineral and mud springs, vacationers can enjoy an amusement park, four artificial lakes, a cable car, a huge park, a zoo and a hippodrome.
The picturesque mountains around the city are conducive to mountaineering and horseback riding. Popular routes are to the Blue Lakes, to Upper Balkaria, to the Aushiger thermal springs, to the Chegem Gorge, and to the waterfalls of the Narzan Valley. Nearby is the highest peak in Europe, Mount Elbrus, and the Elbrus National Park.
Day of the city
Nalchik celebrates September 1, the same day when another significant holiday is celebrated - Republic Day.
Among the other most important holidays for residents of the region is March 28, when the Day of the Revival of the Balkar People
. The memorial date was set in 1994 - on the 50th anniversary of the deportation of the Balkars to Central Asia. And also the date – September 20 – Day of the Circassians, established in 2014.
On March 25, 2010, by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev, Nalchik was awarded the honorary title of the Russian Federation “City of Military Glory”.

Fans of active recreation can come to Kabardino-Balkaria for a freeride tournament - free skiing or snowboarding on undeveloped slopes - among professionals. Competitions called “Elbrus Open” at the end of March – beginning of April bring together hundreds of athletes from different cities of Russia and foreign countries.
The calling card of local cuisine
–
lyagur
, dried or dried meat, which is prepared for future use. The recipe for this dish comes from those times when men went on military campaigns for a long time and were forced to take a supply of food with them. Another thing worth trying in Nalchik is khichina. In one of the local restaurants you can order djed-la - specially prepared chicken in dough. Also try mamlyga and flaky Kabardian bread.
For memorable purchases, you should go to the wool market, where you can very inexpensively buy products made from natural sheep wool, made by Balkar craftswomen. Horseshoes, aurochs horns, as well as local delicacies such as smoked Kabardian cheese, dried lamb and the most delicate halva are popular as souvenirs.
Walking route around Nalchik for 1 day
It turned out that you were passing through Nalchik? This is not a problem; in the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, everything is arranged compactly and conveniently for a traveler to walk. Having 1 day or even 6–8 hours to spare, you can plan an excellent route to get to know Nalchik.
It is convenient to start from the railway station or bus station. They are located in the city center, and if you are in Nalchik for a short time, rent a hotel nearby. Or leave your things in the storage room and go for a walk.
The first attraction on your way is the Nalchik Cathedral Mosque. The building is unusual and even futuristic, unusual for an Islamic building. It is built in the shape of an octagon, with blue domes and gold details - very impressive. The mosque was designed with elements of national color in 2004. Despite the youth of the building, the mosque quickly became popular among both believers and tourists in Nalchik. It is often included in city sightseeing tours.

The mosque is open to visitors of all religions, but it is necessary to adhere to the dress code and be modest in behavior. Next, take a walk along Shogentsukov Avenue , this is one of the main streets of the city.
There are both attractions and useful tourist locations - shops, cafes, hotels nearby. Or turn onto Kabardinskaya - perhaps the most beautiful street in the capital of the republic.
A substantial section of Kabardinskaya is completely pedestrian, and here you can take beautiful photographs as a keepsake. You can sit down in a cafe with a cup of coffee, or look at souvenirs in one of the artisan shops.
A great option is to find a hotel on Kabardinskaya or in its surroundings. Check out the Philharmonic's if you love classical music. Or take a walk further along Shogentsukov Avenue - this way you will find yourself in a separate, completely resort area of Dolinsk .
It is located in the southern part of the city, and covers the territory of the Central Park, rivers, lakes, sanatoriums and health resorts. Dolinsk is attractive for its special microclimate, and even if you find a hotel in another area, come here just to take a walk and breathe fresh air. Don't miss the natural and man-made attractions of Dolinsk: theaters, balneological clinics, kilometers of health paths and park paths. Some appeared more than a hundred years ago.
If you're in Dolinsk, be sure to taste the branded mineral water. It is called “Dolinsk No. 1” and “Dolinsk No. 1R”. You can buy it home in a bottle as a souvenir, and drink mineral water on the spot from a special tap - a pump room. But the main attraction of Dolinsk, as well as the whole of Nalchik, is a huge park.
Atazhukinsky garden

By the way, one of the largest and oldest in Russia and Europe, its area is as much as 250 hectares. The park is named after the local prince Atazhuko Atazhukov, who did a lot for its development and improvement.
And although the history of the park began in the middle of the 19th century, the garden is still popular among guests and residents of Nalchik. What interesting things await you on a walk through Atazhukinsky Park ?
Beautiful walking alleys, shady squares, recreation areas. Start your acquaintance at the main entrance on Lermontov Street, nearby are the Theater of Three Nations and the Theater named after. Shogentsukova. Don't miss the Flower Calendar - the date changes daily.
From here walking paths diverge in all directions, to lakes, observation decks, pump rooms with mineral water, and an amusement park.
Pay attention to the resort lakes; you can rent a catamaran and take a short ride on the water. There are also many cafes, snack bars, and fast food stalls on their banks. In general, the park is huge, and you need to leave at least 2-3 hours to get to know it.
When you get to the Trek resort lake, don't miss the Green Theater building. Beautiful and elegant, it attracts the eye. Moreover, this is a building with history: more than a hundred years ago there was a Kursaal here, for the first vacationers who came to Nalchik for medical treatment “at the waters.” The best view of the Green Theater opens from the observation deck nearby, in the warm season, framed by blooming greenery. Then you can listen to concerts in the theater - music is played in the fresh air.
Have you admired the Green Theater? You can go further to the amusement park . Both young tourists and their parents will like it here - it’s fun, noisy, cool. The amusement park has many cafes and restaurants, snack stalls for every taste and budget. This is a great place for a hungry traveler.

If you're not hungry yet, take a ride on the cable car; its lower station is located just a stone's throw away. Open type cable car, chairlift, single. This entertainment will tickle the nerves of not the most daring tourists, and will definitely be remembered for a long time.
The cable car will take you to the Malaya Kizilovka mountain, its top station is located at +615 meters above sea level. The legendary Nalchik restaurant “Sosruko” is located here.
It is named after the hero of the local epic, the hero Sosruko. Its history largely repeats the Greek legend of Prometheus, but the history of the restaurant began in the era of the USSR. Then it was considered obligatory to have lunch in the “head” of the knight, enjoying the panorama of the mountains and Nalchik.
Now the restaurant is not operating, but it is also included in the list of tourist places on the must visit list. Near it there is an excellent viewing terrace overlooking the city, a flowering park, and many walking paths.
Have you flown under the clouds and worked up an appetite? After descending, take a walk towards Lake Kurortnoye. There are a lot of cafes on its banks where you can dine all year round. But it’s especially great here in the warm season, when restaurants place tables closer to the water. Order Balkar khychins and enjoy your vacation!

Car route from Nalchik for 2 days - Chegem Gorge, Blue Lakes and Upper Balkaria
Have you seen all the best in the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria? So it's time to hit the road. It is more convenient to take a walk by car. If you come without a car, you can easily rent one at one of the rental offices in Nalchik. And go on adventures!
Chegem Gorge in winter
© Victor Bashkir
The first point of our route is Chegem waterfalls . They flow in streams from the walls of a picturesque mountain gorge, a real stone gorge. The gorge is formed by the waters of the Chegem River, its length is approximately 3 kilometers.
The rocks run up 300 meters, while the width of the gorge is only 15–20 meters. The Chegem Gorge is located very close to Nalchik, just 1 hour away.
If you have very little time, you can come, admire the waterfalls, take a photo as a souvenir, buy souvenirs in local shops (the choice here is excellent) and return to Nalchik.
However, if you have free time, it is interesting to continue the route further along the gorge. You will see medieval watchtowers, ruins of fortresses and temples, the City of the Dead in the village of Eltyubyu. Chegem Paradrome - if you don’t fly yourself, admire the brave conquerors of the skies. You will have lunch with khichins overlooking the mountains and move on.
The next point on the route is the Blue Lakes of Kabardino-Balkaria . Surely you have heard about them, even if you have never been to Nalchik. The complex of beautiful emerald-blue karst lakes is known far beyond the city. These 5 reservoirs are located in the Chereksky district of the republic, the journey from Nalchik is only 1 hour.
It is better to travel by car, so you can visit all 5 lakes - the distance between them is noticeable. Two Upper Blue Lakes, Lower Lake, Secret and Dry Lake await you. What is the most convenient way to build a route? Drive to the Lower Blue Lake, then see Lake Secret.
After 500 meters you will see the Upper Lakes. On their banks you can relax a bit, have lunch in a cafe or have a picnic. The panorama will be magnificent: mountains, emerald forests, mirror-like water surface. The direction to the Blue Lakes has long become one of the most popular in Kabardino-Balkaria.

Just 15 kilometers and 20 minutes on the road separate you from the settlement of Upper Balkaria - the historical, cultural, architectural heart of the mountainous republic.
This is a real open-air museum of medieval history. There are ancient defensive towers, and the ruins of residential buildings, the Zylgi-Kala fortress and, of course, the traditional necropolis for these places, the city of the dead.
Moreover, all this architectural diversity is located against the backdrop of the incredible beauty of the mountain landscape. On the way back to Nalchik, do not miss the village of Aushiger. Some of the best thermal pools in the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria are located here.
The water in thermal pools is maintained at +40...50 °C, quite hot. This, as well as its rich mineral composition, determines its healing effect. Residents of the entire Caucasus (and not only the Caucasus) come here to heal, recover, rejuvenate and replenish their vitality.
If you decide to stay in Aushiger for a couple of days, resting from a busy adventure, there will be no problems. Hotels, cafes, health and spa complexes were built near the pools.

Ski holidays in Kabardino-Balkaria
Nalchik is a city of various holiday styles. However, if you come to visit in winter, you will probably want to see the snow-covered mountain expanses. The ski resorts of the Elbrus region are considered an ideal place for such an acquaintance.
Two ski resorts, Cheget and Elbrus, are the oldest in our country. They were the dream of Soviet skiers, as well as modern fans of speed on the snow slopes. The resorts are located on the slopes of the Caucasus Mountains, along the Baksan ridge. The ski infrastructure stretches for almost 15 kilometers and includes hotels, cafes, restaurants, recreation and entertainment areas, equipment rental points and ski schools, and of course cable cars to the mountains.

“Elbrus” annually takes prizes among the ski resorts of our country. If you come to resorts in winter solely for the sake of skiing, it is more convenient to stay in the villages of Polyana Elbrus and Polyana Cheget.
They are located within walking distance from the ski lifts. All other tourists who are not focused on skiing and snowboarding can choose more budget accommodation.
These are the villages of Adyl-Su, Baidaevo, Terskol. By the way, they are waiting for you to visit all year round - to breathe fresh air, admire the mountains and waterfalls, walk along ecological trails and just relax.
If you haven’t decided on a resort yet and want to ride both Cheget and Elbrus, stay in the village of Terskol. It is located at a short distance from both one and the other. You can also come here from Nalchik if you wish; the distance is just over 100 kilometers. You'll go for a ride and come back.
The resorts of the Elbrus region have the longest ski season in the Caucasus. Already in November, the slopes await their conquerors, and you can ski here until May. On certain sections of the slopes, in the area of the Gara-Bashi station and above it, snow lies all year round. At the same time, winter at the resorts is quite mild and comfortable, sunny. The average temperature is about -3 °C. So, which resort would you like better?
Ski complex "Cheget"
The resort is located, as you might guess from the name, at the foot of Mount Cheget. It is known for its steep slopes and equally dashing skiers.

The Cheget ski complex is considered a haven for experienced freeriders and other extreme sports enthusiasts. There are no convenient fenced trails here.
It is unlikely that this resort is suitable for a family holiday or skiing for beginners; skiing on the slopes of Cheget is quite dangerous.
The height of Mount Cheget is 3700 meters. On the ski lifts you can reach a level of +3050 meters above sea level; the resort has three ski lifts - a rope tow and two chairlifts.
The total length of the resort's trails is about 20 kilometers. Please note: there is only one green track on Cheget, the rest are red and black. More convenient trails are located on the southern slope; it is recommended to master the northern slope only in the company of an experienced instructor.
The lower station is located at +2120 meters at Polyana Cheget. There are hotels, cafes, and ski equipment rentals here. The tourist infrastructure of the resort is not very developed, and if you want to combine skiing with entertainment, choose the Elbrus resort.
