The city has both simple cafes with reasonable prices and a standard menu, and gourmet restaurants with well-trained staff and signature dishes.

Reviews:
We walked around the city and came in to warm up. We ordered a pot of tea and waffles. God, you could sell your soul for these waffles! They are incredibly delicious! The portions are huge.
Very friendly staff. There are ready-made solutions for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The establishment is cozy and has coffee for every taste. Compared to other establishments, it opens early.
Excellent breakfast, large portions. Oatmeal - serving for 2, waffle with salmon - very tasty, club sandwich and pancakes - super, there is a lot of everything and tasty. We ordered pancakes for a child and asked to add all the additives separately: the staff was attentive and helpful. They brought a high chair, pencils and a drawing for the small child. The place is excellent, I recommend visiting it with both friends and family.
This is not Nizhny: complexes, mafia and bars of Veliky Novgorod
They decided to move the airport to a military airfield in the remote and now microdistrict of Krechevitsa. Regular planes flew to the old airport until 1997, after which biker open airs began to be held there. Now there is a residential area, and the airport, abandoned by the military, is empty.
The car and train stations are located on the same square in the city center. The local taxi drivers, of course, inflate the price, so it’s better to check with the local taxi company numbers. When calling from a phone, getting to any end of the city costs 100–150 rubles.
Before leaving the carriage, forget about the word “lower”. Confusion with the former Gorky is a pain for Novgorodians and the reason for local jokes like “in ancient Novgorod there were two types of breakdancing: lower and great.”
Federal media journalists massively demonstrate geographic incompetence. There are legends about how someone (for example, participants in a chess tournament) left Moscow for Nizhny instead of Veliky.
Veliky Novgorod was built on the banks of the Volkhov, not the Volga, it is five times smaller than Nizhny Novgorod and much older - the first mention was in 859. This is the birthplace of the projects Kira Lao, “Whirlwind” and Sergei Rachmaninoff.
Going west from the station is the “Alley of Love,” also known as “Alley of Death,” which received its name because of the broken lanterns in the 90s and the deserted surroundings. But officially this is Yunost Boulevard. It’s no longer scary to walk: the punks have been replaced by families with children.
To the west is the Western District, a huge - by local standards - bedroom, where almost half of the city lives. The rest of the city with workplaces, clubs and cafes is separated from the Western one by a railway, through which there is a crossing and an overpass overlooking the industrial area and a concrete fence with graffiti.
Tourists rarely appear in the Western region. Medieval travelers described Novgorodians as gloomy and tight-fisted people, wary of guests and therefore not very welcoming. Modern Western corresponds to this description: an uncomfortable single-industry town with huge dark courtyards, which can completely ruin the impression of the “motherland of Russia”. The Kremlin and delicious food are on the other side.
In the 2000s, Veliky Novgorod was in the power of the “city fathers” - vegetable warehouse director Telman Mkhitaryan and taxi driver Nikolai Kravchenko, who achieved success through raiding and eliminating competitors.
Ask the locals about Kolya Bes if you want to listen to wild crime stories. In the Western District, you will probably be shown the Barin restaurant, where they unsuccessfully tried to eliminate Mkhitaryan by detonating a small bomb.
This continued until the change of governor in 2007. Now Mkhitaryan is in prison, and Kravchenko committed suicide in a pre-trial detention center in Kyiv, wishing good luck to the Maidan in his suicide note. Outsiders were not allowed to attend the funeral, which gave the townspeople reason to become convinced of the conspiracy theory of Kolya Bes’ escape to tropical islands.
In the ten years since the defeat of the organized crime group, the city has changed beyond recognition. “Magnity”, “Dixie” and “Pyaterochka” opened in dozens. And after them, the restaurant business straightened its shoulders. Cafes have finally stopped playing Mikhail Shufutinsky, craft beer has been brought into bars, shawarma is being replaced by rolls with marbled beef, burgers and falafel. The most interesting establishments are located inside the rampart of the Okolny Town - the borders of the city from the 14th century until the 1960s. Two streets are especially interesting: the gloomy Velikaya and the lively Bolshaya Moskovskaya.
A monstrous Drama Theater named after F. Dostoevsky was built on Velikaya, resembling either a broken white piano or a spaceship. Fans of Russian cinema of the 90s saw him in the film “Rat Corner” with Alexander Inshakov in the title role. Andrey Makarevich worked on the project.
Contrary to popular belief, he did not design the entire building, but a couple of windows, but this is enough to be proud of. Near the façade, which faces the river, night drift enthusiasts, skaters and other young people gather. Not far away are two Irish pubs, two restaurants, a restaurant ship, a nightclub with a long tradition of fighting and, in the door next to the club, the only rock club in the city, “Papa Bar,” also known as “Iron Dad.” Remember the address: Chudovskaya, 4. Music is played there from Thursday to Sunday.
Residents of Bolshaya Moskovskaya, in turn, boast of a bar where anyone can play music. Jazz & Blues loft bar is located in the attic of a historic three-story building with windows overlooking Yaroslav's Courtyard and the Kremlin across the river. The local crowd knows how to have a good time, but only starts after midnight - before that time the bar can be a bit boring.
Nearby, the small and rather old Kolobok canteen, a heirloom of its owners, is open all day long. Low-cost destination for those who love delicious food. Pies for 18–30 rubles, a huge bowl of soup for 70, a hundred grams for the same and local flavor - grandmothers, schoolchildren, office plankton.
To the east of these two establishments lies the Old Town - two-story blocks with historical or simply dilapidated buildings, private buildings and almost the oldest Russian street, Slavnaya. The most atmospheric place in the city, which some tourists call St. Petersburg in miniature. Novgorodians, of course, do not agree. It's nice to get lost here, looking at houses that are different from each other. Almost every second one is home to famous politicians, businessmen, and artists.
On Nutnaya Street you can cross paths with Bedros Kirkorov. And on Ilyin Street - take a photograph of the most unusual private house in the city, a huge mansion where the family of the artist Grebennikov lives.
Lovers of craft beer, vinyl and a homely atmosphere will be invited to the Samovar craft beer shop at Fedorovsky Ruchey, 9/17, corner of Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street. The creators ignored conventions and etiquette and created a place, visiting which has become part of the lifestyle for barhoppers, intellectuals and officials who have not yet made it to bronze, even if they do not drink beer. By the way, don’t be surprised: you won’t find any stream on Fedorovsky Ruchee. It was buried after the war, when the Alexander Nevsky Bridge was built here. You will also not find the Gzen River on the Gzen River embankment on the other side of the Volkhov. The oldest Novgorod rock band APM sang a song about this:
I saw a tree in the middle of the river,
That river where fishermen do not argue.
The sails don't sail - the voices
Not seeing heaven is a miracle.
“On Gzeni” there is a loft bar “Dom Byta”, designed as one large Andy Warhol exhibition. In 2012, the establishment was considered the best in terms of atmosphere and presentation of bar culture, but recently there has been a slight shift towards clubbers from the 90s with security at the entrance. A real case: the author of these lines was not allowed into the establishment because of the stripes on his sneakers.
The ancient but Soviet-looking five-story city decided to regain its identity in 1991, so there are a lot of old names. There is no Lenin Street or Leninsky Prospekt in Veliky Novgorod. But there is the street of Boyan, the medieval bard. But joking about Boyan is a bane.
You read the toponyms like a birch bark letter: Stratilatovskaya, Predtechenskaya, Bolshaya Vlasyevskaya, Slavnaya, Rogatitsa, Lubyanitsa.
The latter, today bearing the name of Pushkin, gave the name to Moscow's Lubyanka Square, where deported Novgorodians were settled after Novgorod was annexed to Moscow by Ivan III. The Grand Duke is depicted on the monument to the Millennium of Russia. But the name of his grandson Ivan the Terrible will never be immortalized in Veliky Novgorod, even if monuments appear throughout the country, due to the oprichnina’s defeat of Novgorod. And at the monument to the Millennium of Russia, where almost one and a half hundred of the most important Russian figures are gathered, he is not there either.
The strength of the territory’s identity is in the conversations of the townspeople: “Novgorod is not Moscow”, “We should have been the capital in the first place”, “We are the birthplace of Russia and Russian democracy”, “Great is not some Nizhny” and so on.
Local identity is quickly instilled among non-indigenous Novgorodians. She is invisible, but persistent. Someone will lead you across the pedestrian “humpbacked” bridge over Volkhov and will definitely tell you about how on the ancient Great Bridge at this place the townspeople met wall to wall. A citywide fist fight began when Novgorodians could not resolve a pressing issue at the Veche - the local proto-parliament. From the bridge it is convenient to admire the Victory Monument to the south of the Kremlin, a tall stele with a horse that for some reason gallops to the east. In the recent past, the monument was called a monument to eggs and the scrotum of a horse was painted at Easter.
Right under the walls of the Kremlin is the city beach. The proximity of ancient walls and naked bodies amazed Artemy Lebedev several years ago. When looking at it from a certain angle, you can’t tell that the beach is even in the city. On the other side is another absurdity: a floating restaurant on the frigate “Flagship”, which greatly ruins the historical appearance of the territory where such ships have never appeared. It arrived in 2008 and immediately received the unofficial name “barge” from the locals.
You can eat delicious food everywhere in the city, but there are surprisingly few true Novgorod catering outlets. The legendary restaurant “Detinets” in Soviet times in one of the Kremlin towers was closed in 2010 after the arrival of Patriarch Kirill (part of the premises was located in the church). The banner of the ambassador of Novgorod cuisine was picked up by Zavod-bar on Germana Street, near the entrance of the liquor store. If the term “craft” were applicable to homemade liqueurs, it would definitely appear on the sign.
Bartenders carefully infuse vodka and gin with berries and fruits, celery, horseradish, peppers and even bacon. There is a Russian oven in the hall, in which something is regularly baked.
For those who like simpler places, there is the Derzhavny bar on Gazon Street directly opposite the Kremlin. A Soviet establishment with homemade mead, a pseudo-historical interior and an image of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker above the bar.
As souvenirs, take vodka, gin, liqueur “Spotykach” or “Old Russian” balm produced by the same “Alcon”, a large gingerbread in one of the stalls of “Novgorodkhleb”, paintings, magnets and pendants of the author’s work in the “Gallery at the Market” on Yaroslav’s Dvorishche. Don’t take produced beer, it’s better to try Khvoyninskoe from the far edge of the Novgorod region.
Brighten up your hangover after an evening of bar hopping with clean natural air. The best places for this are the beach under the walls of the Yuryev Monastery south of the city and the Vitoslavlitsy Museum of Wooden Architecture nearby, or the Perynsky Monastery on the shore of Lake Ilmen. For those with personal transport, it’s better to go to the Ilmensky Klint for impressions - tall outcrops of ancient limestone on the banks of the Ilmen. It’s a 70 km drive, but then you’ll tell everyone that you were on the largest natural limestone outcrop on the East European Plain.

Ugolek is a restaurant of southern cuisine, where resort hits are prepared in front of visitors - in an open kitchen and in a tandoor.

Master classes and all kinds of raffles will not let you get bored, and on Friday and Saturday live music will also set the mood - from 20.00. Master classes, by the way, are not only for adults, but also for children. There, for example, they will learn how to make dumplings and cookies.

We've been to this restaurant several times. The waitresses work conscientiously. I liked the cream soup with shrimp. Various salads (I don’t remember the names) are always good. There are dishes with a bright taste, and there are dishes with a delicate taste. Quite decent steaks.
Very good establishment. We ordered khachapuri, salad, steak, tea, everything was very tasty. Nice interior, lots of places.
We went to Ugolyok twice, the first time as a couple, and the next day we brought friends. Relatively inexpensive and tasty. I really liked the pilaf, crumbly, with spices, and they didn’t spare the meat; my companions ordered lula kebab, which they also praised.

Excellent dumplings! The simplest/traditional ones are the most delicious. The hall does not accommodate everyone. If you like dumplings, come in, you won’t regret it!
In Nizhny Novgorod we went to 2 restaurants of this chain and were pleasantly surprised. Both times the food was excellent, we took both individual dishes and combo lunches. My heart was won by blueberry dumplings, an excellent combination of filling and sauce!

This is the most delicious dessert I have ever tried, caramel filling and chocolate dough - it's just delicious! I recommend everyone to visit this place, BUT! Take it with you and leave immediately, as it is quite expensive there and there is a risk of spending a lot of money!
If you love pastries with custard, this is the place for you. I tried the profiteroles, they are wonderful. Another day I ate the most tender Napoleon. Very tasty. Simple concept but very good vanilla custard - highly recommend.

The prices are reasonable, the food is very tasty. Fast delivery. We really liked the polite waiter. On Saturday there is a great atmosphere, good music, it’s especially cool to sit at tables on the street and admire the city.
Very tasty for quite inexpensive. The red fish quiche turned out to be very tender. Basil lemonade went great in the hot weather. We came here based on reviews and did not regret it!
Very interesting bar/cafe. The atmosphere is in the style of “all our own”. Fun, heterogeneous crowd, the place is often crowded, visitors hang out on the street. The prices are reasonable. The service is ok, it's clear that the guys are trying. Good coffee and cocktails. Unexpectedly good cuisine. Great place to grab a snack during the day/hang out in the evening. Definitely worth a visit.

We love this place and always stop by when we pass through Nizhny. Homemade noodles, delicious toppings, Belgian waffles with salted caramel, delicious non-alcoholic mulled wine. Prices are normal. There are few places, but there is a lot of turnover, they always found somewhere to sit and enjoy the food.
I really like waffles and noodles! Last weekend we tried the new potato and salmon ones. It’s also very good, but I would like them to work on the sauce.
The place is popular; there was nowhere for an apple to fall on the weekend. The noodles are delicious, you can put together a set to suit your taste, only with vegetables, meat, seafood. Loved the sweet and sour sauce and curry sauce!

I go to Traveler's Coffee every time I come to Nizhny Novgorod. And there is always coffee that surprises. This time I drank lemon raffe there, eating a lemon tartlet. And in winter I really liked the raspberry rough.

We were a family on May 1st, and with a sold-out crowd of people on the main street, they found free seats. We took cream cheese and champignon soups - delicious, with croutons, medium density, very tasty. Chicken noodles with good proper broth, soft meat - ideal for children.
We came to Novgorod for a walk. Very tasty, huge portions, inexpensive. The service is good. We recommend it to everyone.
Many thanks to the staff for their work, everything was very tasty, both during lunch and in the evening. I want to come again and again. I don’t know any places in Nizhny with similar price-quality ratio. I recommend!
