    to Russia

Tomsk is one of the “nodal” cities of Siberia. It’s hard to imagine traveling through this gigantic region without visiting it. And it’s not even about the amazing wooden architecture of residential areas and the expressiveness of temples. The history of Tomsk is a series of amazing twists of fate. The city has gone from a small fort on the Tom River to the most important city in Western Siberia. Everything was going great until, during the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway, the designers made the fateful decision to lay a line 80 km to the south. Despite such a heavy blow, Tomsk managed to maintain its status as a major center of trade and industry. And also education. There are 8 universities for almost 600 thousand inhabitants.

Where to go if it’s your first time in the city

It’s better to start getting acquainted with Tomsk from the Camp Garden. It got its name because the summer military camps of the local garrison were located here until 1812. Later, theatrical performances and dances accompanied by a brass band were often held in their place. After the Great Patriotic War, several monuments to Tomsk citizens who died during the hard years were erected in the park. The camp garden is a wonderful place for a walk. And in its southern part there is a luxurious observation deck.

You can continue your walk along the main street of Tomsk - Lenin Avenue. After 10 minutes of leisurely walking, a picturesque park will appear on the left, and in it - an unusual building with a glass roof. This is the greenhouse of the Siberian Botanical Park (office site).

Among the numerous plants from all over the globe, Howea Forster, the first “exhibit” brought here back in 1885, and Livistona south stand out. The height of the latter is 30 m; as it grows, the greenhouse staff increases the height of the roof.

If you move further along the avenue to the north, the next square will appear - Novo-Sobornaya. In its center there is a monument to St. Tatiana, the patroness of students, and in the southern part there is Victory Alley with a complex of monuments and steles. There is also a luxurious fountain, built for the 400th anniversary of Tomsk in 2003. In the neighborhood of Novo-Sobornaya there are several other notable places: the ancient building of the Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radio Electronics, the Museum of the History of Political Repressions with a monument to the victims of Stalinism, the house of the merchant Gadalov , building of the provincial government, Church of St. Alexander Nevsky.

In the very center of the square is the city’s coat of arms, made of wood, and the recreation area is decorated with a stone fountain. House with dragons

House with dragons

In the very center of Tomsk, at 68 Krasnoarmeyskaya Street, there is an extraordinary two-story house. Its walls are decorated with blue wooden details. This house was built according to the design of one famous Tomsk artist-architect V. Orzhenko at the beginning of the twentieth century. Local residents began to call this place “the house of dragons.” Whole seven heads of the fabulous beast decorate the roof of the building and its canopy.

This mansion is different from the local wooden houses, and it's not because of the dragons. This building has dark walls with large white windows, a fairly high roof, and also has a corner tower. The house with dragons has become the hallmark of the city of Tomsk, and the building itself is classified as an architectural monument of federal significance. Now the Center for Medical Prevention operates in this house.

City Garden

City Garden

Tomsk City Garden is one of the most favorite recreational places for local residents. Although it looks young and modern, it is almost 150 years old. In 1883, by order of local authorities, paths were laid in this place, a fountain was installed, trees were planted and playgrounds were installed. In 1946, a dance floor and an indoor stage appeared in the park. Today in this garden you can not only take a walk, but also go on rides, watch sports competitions, take part in games and quests, and in the evening dance at a disco. For photography lovers, there are photo zones in the garden.

The first museum of Slavic mythology

The first museum of Slavic mythology

The first museum of Slavic mythology is a sociocultural project, based on an art collection. These are works of decorative and applied art based on Slavic history, Russian fairy tales and customs. The museum collects and popularizes the works of contemporary artists.

Today the museum is a modern building, where various exhibitions are presented on three floors, there is a gift shop and a workshop. The museum hosts excursions and master classes, celebrations and meetings. In the museum they will tell you many legends, myths and fairy tales and teach you how to make various handicrafts. This museum is definitely worth the attention of any guest of Tomsk.

Khomich's mansion

Khomich's mansion

The work on the mansion was carried out by architect S.V. Khomich started in 1904, and 10 years later the building was erected. The mansion is included in the list of architectural monuments of federal significance. The processing of the facades is done in a pseudo-Russian style, and it looks very beautiful and bewitching. There is a legend in the city that the writer A. Volkov was inspired to create “The Wizard of the Emerald City” by this very building. We won’t know whether this is true or not, but looking at the magnificent mansion you really think that you are in a majestic emerald castle.

Theater of living puppets "2+Ku"

Theater of living puppets "2+Ku"

The 2+Ku Living Puppet Theater is literally the place where puppets live and work. This extraordinary doll design was developed by Vladimir Zakharov. Dolls can do a lot: blink, move their mouths, move their fingers. When asked how this happens, the theater managers confidently answer that real magic is involved here. Theater visitors also sincerely believe in this, because dolls cannot be so alive.

The theater was founded in 1991, when the inventor of the puppets himself began working on his own fairy tale, “Jean from the Pod.” And a year later - on June 17, 1992 - the first premiere of the play took place for the closest friends and acquaintances. And today the theater opens its doors wide to a large number of visitors, including children and adults. All these people dream of immersing themselves in a fairy tale, and dolls help them with this, and the skill of the puppeteers is natural. This theater is open all year round, there is no time to take vacations.

The auditorium seats about 80 people; on the cozy terrace you can drink tea and cookies (the most popular are herbal). In addition, here you can see the houses of doll elves and a real squirrel. After the performance, you will be able to get to know the dolls better and have an atmospheric photo shoot.

Museum "Professor's Apartment"

Museum "Professor's Apartment"

The interior of this apartment is decorated in the style of the early twentieth century. The creators of the museum tried to recreate as accurately as possible the life of the Tomsk professors of that time. In this place you can fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of professorial life.

Among the exhibits you can find various pieces of furniture and household items, books, paintings and photographs. And most importantly, there are no signs saying “do not touch with hands” or “photography is prohibited.” In addition to guided and individual excursions, you can rent an apartment for a photo shoot or for an event. Also, if you have interior items from the early twentieth century that you no longer need, you can easily donate them to the museum; this is most welcome.

Memorial Museum "Investigative Committee of the NKVD"

Memorial Museum "Investigative Committee of the NKVD"

Tomsk Memorial Museum "Investigative Committee of the NKVD" dedicated to the history of political repressions, is located in the basement of the building where the Tomsk prison of the city department of the OGPU-NKVD was located from 1923 to 1944. This is one of the most popular museums in the city, which carries the bitter memory of those people who were repressed in the 30s of the last century.

The area adjacent to the building formerly served as the courtyard of the prison. Currently, the Memory Square is located in this place; in 1992-2011, monuments to the repressed were erected here. The memory square and the museum now represent a single memorial complex, which is certainly worth the attention of any tourist.

The permanent exhibition of the museum includes: the interior of the investigator's office, a reconstructed prison corridor and a cell for pre-trial prisoners. Among the exhibits you can find original documents from investigative cases, embroidery, photo albums, paintings, wood and stone crafts made by prisoners, and playing cards. The museum has a library that has a large number of books, videos and photo archives and a large electronic database that stores information on more than 200,000 people who went through all the horrors of repression and dispossession.

Epiphany Cathedral

Epiphany Cathedral

This cathedral is located right in the center of Tomsk, it is difficult not to notice it. The cathedral building stands out sharply from Soviet-built houses. Around the seventeenth century, a wooden church stood on the site of this cathedral, and construction of a stone building began in 1777; construction was completed 17 years later. In the 19th century, the cathedral played an important role in the city: it opened a school and a library with a large number of books. During Soviet times, the building was used as an industrial premises, which is why the cathedral was seriously damaged: not a single dome remained, the bell tower was almost destroyed, and the decor of the facade was changed.

Restoration of the cathedral began in 1995 shortly after the collapse of the union; five years later regular services resumed, and in 2003 the premises were illuminated. The building of the Cathedral of the Epiphany is an example of Siberian Baroque. The cathedral itself is two-story and built of brick, it has an asp, a refectory and a bell tower. The facade of the building is decorated with bow kokoshniks.

There is a lot of light in the spacious hall of the temple, and although the walls have not yet been painted, there is something to admire. The cathedral houses the relics of St. Panteleimon; people turn to this saint with requests for healing. Today the cathedral is developing quite active educational activities; a Sunday school, a museum, a youth club and a community for the deaf operate on the basis of the cathedral.

The territory of the park is landscaped with comfortable benches, cute gazebos and an original flower pendant. This cute square has become one of the favorite places for lovers. Wedding registrations and family photo sessions are often held here.

Monument "400 years of Tomsk"

Monument "400 years of Tomsk"

For more than four hundred years of its existence, Tomsk has become home not only to people, but also to a large number of monuments that are scattered throughout the city. They create a special atmosphere in the city, fill it with humor and love of life, and serve as a reminder of historical events.

A monument was erected on Lenin Square in honor of the city’s birthday in 2004. The design of the monument demonstrates the entire history of Tomsk; at the corners of the square there are pillars with images of important events in the history of the city. The sculpture is decorated with the crown of the Russian Empire on top.

Monument “Right now I’ll sing...”

Monument “Right now I’ll sing...”

Local residents have a very subtle sense of humor, so ironic sculptures are the calling card of the city; it would be a shame not to take a photo next to at least one of them. Below we present the TOP of the most popular monuments in Tomsk.

The sculpture is an exact copy of the famous wolf from the cartoon “Once Upon a Time There Was a Dog.” Hidden in the monument is a microsystem with which the wolf pronounces his most famous phrases. The wolf sits on his “pedestal”, well-fed and satisfied, you look at him, and it seems that he is really about to start singing. Local residents believe that the monument perfectly reflects the state of happiness.

Monument to the Frog Traveler

Monument to the Frog Traveler

This is the smallest monument on the planet depicting a frog sitting on a stone. This monument is only 44 mm in height, made with great painstaking care and incredible precision. The monument is installed next to the Tomsk Hotel and attracts thousands of tourists every year with its originality. The monument has been delighting tourists and Tomsk residents since 2013 and serves as a symbol of travel and tourism.

“To the woman and teenager who forged Victory in the rear”

“To the woman and teenager who forged Victory in the rear”

This monument reminds us that victory in the Great Patriotic War is a merit not only of the army, but also of the home front soldiers. In memory of the “invisible heroes,” Tomsk residents erected a monument depicting a boy and a woman holding a shell in their hands. Every year on May 9, local residents bring flowers here to honor the memory of the heroes of that bloody war. Looking at this monument, you begin to think about what is important and appreciate what you have.

Monument to Lover

Monument to Lover

One of the funniest and most comical monuments in Tomsk adorns the wall of the Tomsk History Museum. The sculpture depicts a male lover who is taken by surprise. The unfortunate man in his underpants is hanging on the ledge. The presentation of this monument was held on St. Valentine's Day, and every year on this day the museum employees change the panties of a lover. All year round, tourists and city residents themselves visit this monument to take photographs and at the same time visit the museum.

Monument to the ruble

Monument to the ruble

The monument to the Russian currency was erected in Tomsk in 2008 and since then has been considered the main attraction at the annual carnival. The coin weighs 250 kg and is two meters high. The Tomsk ruble is rightfully considered the largest ruble on the planet.

Where to go with a child

Children will definitely not get bored in Tomsk - there are many places in the city where you can have fun and learn something new. The Tomsk Regional Theater invites young spectators to the performance (office site). In addition to children's, there are also productions on “adult themes”. No less popular among the younger generation is the theater “Skomorokh” (office site). Its repertoire includes about 30 performances, and before each one the children are greeted by buffoons with fun, games and quizzes.

Tomsk Exotarium is not an ordinary zoo, but a full-fledged rehabilitation center where wounded, sick and abandoned wild animals are rescued (office site). Today there are more than 250 individuals of 100 species of animals. The main “stars”: puma Athos, leopard Agat, bear Manya, red fox Zlata.

Children from 4 years old and adults can get a good workout at the Jordan trampoline center (Frunze Ave., 103). At the same time, you can try yourself as a climber by climbing on a climbing wall.

In the “Project X” park, the children see how physical and chemical laws work (Lenina Ave., 174 (Vesna shopping center, 4th floor). They visit the “Laboratory of Physical Exhibits”, “Rotating Portal”, where you can experience the illusion movement in space, the “Gravity Room”, “Mirror Labyrinth of the Taj Mahal” and other interactive attractions.

WHERE TO GO FOR EXTREME?

  • to Akademgorodok, where you can rent alpine skis and cheesecakes;
  • to a park near the village of Kolarovo, where there is also a rope tow, ski equipment rental, and a tubing slope;
  • to an extreme park between Tomsk and neighboring Seversk, where there is an obstacle course, bungee jumping, a shooting range, a climbing wall, and where you can also ride snowmobiles, ATVs and play paintball.

Like everywhere else, Tomsk has cinemas, nightclubs, cafés and cafés, coffee shops and bakeries. What's worth trying? The choice is wide - from Siberian classics like pancakes and dumplings to street food of all stripes: from burgers for every taste, excellent pizza, to Mexican tacos, Chinese woks, Vietnamese pho-bo.

And also, of course, branded cedar candies, Tomsk cake and many different versions of coffee, tea and lemonade.

Tatyana Bratchenko, 2nd year student of the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering, Altai State Agrarian University (Barnaul):

My sister studies in Tomsk - I wanted to see her and see the city. We lived in the TPU sanatorium, the conditions were good - comfortable, convenient, close to everything. We looked at the two main Tomsk universities, TSU and TPU. Overall, I really liked Tomsk: it’s small, comfortable, there’s incredible architecture here—it’s very exciting. I’m also considering the option of studying for a master’s degree in Tomsk. Tomsk is a city of students, great opportunities!

Where to go for free

The universities of Tomsk are its pride, giving the city the title of Siberian “student capital”. On a 1.5-kilometer stretch from Novo-Cathedral Square to the Tomsk Electromechanical Plant, the main buildings of 4 of 6 universities are located. Thanks to the seamless architecture of the campuses and the beauty of University Grove, this area has received the status of one of the most beautiful corners of the city. The main pearl is the snow-white building of Tomsk State University, founded in 1878 (Lenin Ave., 36/9). Nearby are the Polytechnic and Medical University. A walk through their courtyards seems to transport you somewhere to the Sorbonne or Bologna.

At the top of the hill known as Yurt Mountain is the Mother of God Alexievsky Monastery. It was founded almost simultaneously with the city in 1605, and over the centuries of its existence the monastery was destroyed and moved from place to place more than once.

The Mother of God Alexievsky Monastery is sometimes called the “forerunner of Tomsk University”, since in 1746 the first theological school in Siberia was opened here.

A date with Tomsk will not be complete without a walk along the picturesque embankment, a favorite place for leisurely promenades for city residents. Here there is a cobblestone road, a beautiful view of the Ushaika and Tom rivers and a controversial monument to Chekhov. The writer visited Tomsk in 1890, and then he really did not like the city, which Anton Pavlovich did not fail to mention in his notes. Chekhov stayed at the hotel, within the walls of which the Slavic Bazaar restaurant is now open. In front of the entrance to the building there is a monument with the inscription on the pedestal “Anton Pavlovich in Tomsk through the eyes of a drunken man lying in a ditch and who has not read Kashtanka.”

  • Theotokos-Alexievsky Monastery

WHERE ELSE SHOULD YOU GO FOR MEMORABLE PHOTOS?

For a walk through places with urban graffiti and street art:

  • “Tomsk motives” (Bakunina St., 1);
  • “Dove of Peace” (Ushayki Embankment St., 8a);
  • “Rejection” (R. Luxembourg St., 8);
  • “Light of Science” (Nikitina St., 8a);
  • courtyard of the building on Lenin Avenue, 76a;
  • “The Legend of Tom” (Lenin Ave., 65);
  • “House with Firebirds” (trans. 1905, 7);
  • “Fauna of the Tomi River” (st. Embankment of the Tomi River, 29a);
  • “Siberian sturgeon” (Zagornaya str., 12).

Wooden quarters of Tomsk

Tomsk neighborhoods with wooden buildings are a real open-air museum. One of the most charismatic is Tatarskaya Sloboda, also known as Zaistochye. This compact area is almost entirely built up with wooden mansions. Their specialty is the walls, black from time to time, and snow-white floral patterns in the carvings (Muslim culture forbade the depiction of animals and humans). Approximately in the middle of the main street of the Tatarskaya quarter there is the Red Mosque, or rather, its remains: the 40-meter minaret and dome are long gone. In addition to wooden ones, there are also several notable stone buildings. For example, the blue-walled palace of the merchant and philanthropist Karim Khamitov (Gorky St., 35). This brilliant example of eclectic oriental-style architecture is today home to the Tatar Cultural Center.

The Elan district, located within the boundaries of Lenin and Kirov Avenues, is no less vibrant. Its main treasure is houses in the wooden Art Nouveau style of the early 20th century. Next to outright slums, you can often see freshly restored houses here. Sovetskaya Street is especially impressive in its authenticity - there are tram tracks along it and there is practically no car traffic. Addresses of the most beautiful houses in Elani: Krasnoarmeyskaya, 67/1, Gagarina, 42 and 44, Kartashova, 28, Kartashova, 11, Kuznetsova, 17.

WHERE ELSE ARE INTERESTING STORIES ABOUT TOMSK TOLD?

  • in the regional museum of local lore - here you can learn a lot about the ancestors of today's Siberians;
  • in the private museum “Professor's Apartment” - here you will be introduced to Tomsk life of the early 20th century;
  • on excursions with Tomsk guides who will tell you about the secrets of Tomsk dungeons, the life of universities and the historical districts of the city.
  • using the free QR quest “Creative Tomsk”, which you can complete at any free time from your smartphone.

And all guests of the city, without exception, are recommended to visit the TSU Botanical Garden. It's always hot, green and very beautiful here.

Polina Kuznetsova, 2nd year student at the Institute of Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology of the Siberian Federal University (Krasnoyarsk):

Tomsk is located not far from Krasnoyarsk, getting here is easier and cheaper. And there were also friends here. We walked around the city, they showed us the TPU buildings and its museums. We liked that the university has such an interesting history. We visited a cafe in Tomsk and got acquainted with the local cuisine. In general, the student tourism program is great, I really hope that it will continue to work.

Where to go on the weekend

A weekend is the best time to get to know the part of Tomsk where it actually began. We are talking about Resurrection Mountain. It got its name from the church of the same name, and it was here that a fort was built, which later became a stronghold for the conquest of Eastern Siberia.

Two streets lead to the top of Voskresenskaya Mountain: Bakunina and Oktyabrsky Vzvoz. The first managed to preserve the paving stones and the main part of the building, and at the very top of Resurrection it goes around the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos Queen of the Holy Rosary. The Catholic church was built in 1833; it is the oldest church in Siberia. It’s not surprising, because in the 19th century a huge number of Poles were exiled here; entire Polish villages are still preserved in the Tomsk region. The end of Bakunin Street faces the cape of Voskresenskaya Mountain, sliding into urban development. On this “patch” there is a partially restored prison, or more precisely, its Spasskaya travel tower.

Initially, the fort performed purely defensive functions, protecting the new Russian lands from nomads. But after the expansion of the borders to the east and south, Tomsk lost its military purpose. But it acquired an economic one - after the creation of the Siberian Highway, the city turned into a center of trade, becoming the center of the gigantic Tomsk province, which included the modern Tomsk, Novosibirsk and Kemerovo regions, as well as the Altai Territory.

The second route to Voskresenskaya Mountain lies through Oktyabrsky Vzvoz, which runs parallel to Bakunin. And it leads straight to the Church of the Resurrection, a monument of Siberian Baroque with Gothic elements. The picturesque temple is one of the most beautiful churches beyond the Urals. Near it stands an arched belfry for the recently restored 16-ton Siberian Tsar Bell.

At the top of Resurrection Mountain are its main attractions. In the building of the former police headquarters, today there is a Museum of the History of Tomsk with a fire tower. You can climb the latter (50 RUB), meeting firefighter Afanasy (albeit in the form of a dummy). By the way, the museum itself contains a photograph from a 19th century watchtower - it will be interesting to compare the landscapes. You should also definitely visit the Museum of Slavic Mythology. In addition to the wonderful exhibition, you can attend concerts, dance in circles, and take part in master classes. And also - buy Tomsk ceramics, products from Siberian cedar and birch bark, and a delicious Tomsk souvenir - cone jam.

Tolovskie bowls

Tolovskie bowls

This beautiful natural monument consists of limestone formations that are shaped like bowls. They are about a meter high. The bowls are made of travertine. These bowls were formed due to the release of water to the surface of the earth, which was saturated with limestone formations. In addition, the walls contain a rather rare mineral - birnessite, which is manganese oxide. This is the second deposit of this mineral in Russia. Tolovsky bowls are located in the Mezheninovsky rural settlement, Basandaika village.

Lampsakov Estate

Lampsakov Estate

The museum complex was created in 2008, on the basis of the regional hospital. The museum is named after the doctor Nikolai Lampsakov, who organized a zemstvo hospital in the village of Novo-Kuskovo, where he received patients absolutely free of charge, and during the Civil War he nursed wounded Red Army soldiers and White Guards. The complex includes a birch bark museum, an exhibition dedicated to Lampsakov, and a museum of the Civil War. Quests and competitions are also often held here.

Church of the Savior Not Made by Hands in Kolarovo

Church of the Savior Not Made by Hands in Kolarovo

The church in Kolarovo is one of the most famous active churches in the area. The wooden church building was erected in 1645. The stone building was erected only at the end of the 18th century. The main shrine of the Church - the image of the Savior - was lost in the 1930s. During the years of Soviet power, the church managed to survive only due to the fact that the building housed a granary and a local club. And in 1990, the church resumed its work after restoration.

Semiluzhensky Cossack fort

Semiluzhensky Cossack fort

In the 17th century, a Cossack outpost was located in the village of Semilushki. One of the local residents, whose name is Vladimir Ilyin, personally restored all the buildings of that time: huts, a blacksmith, a church, wells, towers with bells, fortress walls, cannons and items of peasant life. The prison hosts various excursions, holidays, weddings, rituals and folk art festivals.

Seversky Zoo

Seversky Zoo

The zoo in Seversk is so far the only zoo in the entire region. The zoo opened in the 60s, when a wildlife corner was created in a local park; later the collection of animals began to grow, which led to the formation of the zoo. Today there are about 220 species of different animals, including lemurs, crocodiles, monkeys, camels, ostriches and many others.

Where to go for fun

There are 7 cinemas in Tomsk, evenly scattered in different parts of the city. Fans of more serious art, theater, simply must visit the Tomsk Theater. Before the performance, you can go to a small museum where things related to the history of the theater are carefully stored: posters, props, programs, photographs and other exhibits.

Relatively “fresh”, but already deeply loved by Tomsk residents and guests of the city, the sculpture is located in an ordinary residential area on the street. Shevchenko, 19/1. This is the famous wolf from the popular cartoon “Once upon a time there was a dog.” The bronze monument is interactive - there is a small button on the right side of his chest: if you press it with a coin, the Wolf says his catchphrases: “I’ll sing right now!”, “God help you!”, “Well, come in if anything happens!” A must visit!

Tomsk is Siberia, and in order to feel its atmosphere even more, it is better to come here in winter. And ideally - before the New Year. In December, the city center turns into a real fairy tale - skating rinks are filled in parks and squares and ice sculptures and attractions are installed: slides, labyrinths. And in the evening, all this beauty is illuminated by multi-colored illumination.
