Mshensky holy springs

In the village of Mshentsy, next to the Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Church, there are two holy springs, the third is located 750 m northeast of the village. They all come out of karst sinkholes. The source is practically undeveloped; for the convenience of collecting water, there is only a wooden bridge. There is a sign nearby that says you are not allowed to swim here.

On the holiday of the village of Mshentsy, many people come to the springs who believe in its miraculous properties.

You can get to Bologoye easily and quickly from St. Petersburg and Moscow. Here you can take a break from the hustle and bustle, immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a provincial town, admire nature and explore numerous monuments.

Railway station in Bologoye

The station in Bologoye was built at the same time as the railway. The line opened in 1851. The author of the station project was R. A. Zhelyazevich. Initially, the building had one floor with a canopy under which passengers could hide from bad weather.

The structure was built of red brick, which was framed by light lines of cement. The walls at the ends of the building are made round. In 1887, the second level was completed.

At the beginning of the 20th century, work began on the construction of a new station. A bridge for passengers was also made. The new station opened in 1917.

During World War II, the station was often bombed, however, this did not interfere with the movement of trains. In 1985, the station was awarded the Order of the Great Patriotic War for its assistance to the Soviet Army. Not far from the station, a monument was erected to the railway workers who died at their combat post.

The modern station has everything necessary for a comfortable stay for passengers: a buffet, a waiting room, a restaurant, rest rooms, ticket offices, a police station, a first-aid post, a pharmacy, a telephone, and kiosks.

On a note! The territory of the station is decorated with the hero steam locomotive of the Eu706-10 brand, which personifies the courage of Bologoe’s drivers. This monument is considered a symbol of the city. Address: Zavodskoy lane, 1.

Bologovo Museum of Local Lore named after N. I. Dubravitsky

The museum opened in 1970 based on an exhibition from school No. 12, organized by teacher Nikolai Ivanovich Dubravitsky. The institution has been named after its founder since 1997. The museum is located in the historical mansion of the Kolovsky merchants.

The exhibition presents items that represent the history of the Bologovo region. It shows: peasant life, the importance of the railway, the culture of the city of the 19th-20th centuries. Visitors will also see exhibits telling about the connection with the region of the artist Nicholas Roerich and the archaeologist Prince P. Putyatin. One of the exhibitions covers the history of the city in the 20th century, as well as the events of the Patriotic War and the repression of the 1930s.

The museum also has an exhibition hall, where temporary exhibitions are often held. Here you can see the works of artists and folk craftsmen, purchase booklets, souvenirs, and jewelry.

Estate "Zaklyuchye"

The estate called “Zaklyuchye” is located away from urban areas, on the shore of the lake. The house was built at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries by A. S. Khrenov, an architect and artist from St. Petersburg. He designed a country house to his liking, along with outbuildings and a hunting lodge. There was also a stud farm here for breeding thoroughbred horses. Brick and boulder stone were mainly used in construction. The main house is created in an eclectic style with modern elements. There was a path leading to the main building, with flower beds on both sides. The eastern part of the building faces directly to the lake and a large park.

The presence of a rounded turret with a balcony gives the main house a romantic feel. Above the balcony doors there are original stucco elements with flowers.

The layout of the house is asymmetrical. The interior decoration has not been preserved; only the stove and the spiral metal staircase of the tower remain intact.

On the south side of the house there is a monument in the form of a young man with an oar, erected during the years of Soviet power.

After the revolution, the owner of the estate left the country and moved to China. Now the territory with the house has been purchased. The road to Zarechye is quite difficult and bumpy.

Reviews about Bologoe

A city between two capitals, people like everywhere else in the province. The roads are ruined, but you can drive, they are cleaned in winter even in forested areas. You can also eat deliciously and inexpensively; in the Devyatochka building, not far from the station, on the right, at the end of the building, there is a magnificent canteen with smiling women and hot, rich soup. The stores have everything, the prices are the same as in MSK + St. Petersburg: 2. There are hotels, tourist centers too, you just need to call everywhere and make an agreement in advance. There are also guest houses; I knew one in one, on Uritsky Street. A normal, middle-level provincial town.

A typical provincial town is the administrative center and largest railway junction of the Oktyabrskaya Railway. Geographically, it is located in the middle between St. Petersburg and Moscow, a kind of Middle Capital of Russia. Located on the shore of the lake of the same name. The city makes a depressing impression: the roads are broken, the houses are shabby even in the city center, the lake is rotten and dusty. The question inevitably arises: how do people live here? Transport connections with other settlements are poor, buses run rarely. You can’t wait for the train either, and it’s expensive. It seems that only United Russia flies on Sapsan and Lastochka aircraft. In short, dust, noise, dirt and nothing human, all that remains is a feeling of deep gratitude that this is not in your home. Now I understand the aborigine who exclaimed, wishing him all the best: “How can you live? -I ask you, “How can you live?” without swearing, in such conditions!” I would like to note that residents of the Tver region are distinguished by an exceptional sense of humor and inexhaustible optimism. It was they who nicknamed tourists “Moscow camels”, and the expanse of Lake Bologevskoe from the local administration building to the Trinity Church is called the “holy highway”. The history of the city is unique. If not for the geographical location, it is unknown how his fate would have developed. The opening of the station on the Nikolaevskaya railway played a key role in the further development of the city. The city played a special role during the Great Patriotic War, as the most important strategic communication hub, and therefore was held by the troops of the Soviet army. The station and the city survived 527 raids by enemy aircraft. Due to the prevailing realities, the population of the city has been steadily falling since 2012, simply dying out, but there is hope that the trend will soon stop when the last citizen dies. I can’t ignore another iconic moment, again associated with geographical location. Bologoe is a linguistic center where the debate over the correct use of words for certain objects and phenomena has reached its climax. A curb or a curb, an entrance or a front door, an overpass or a viaduct, a season ticket or a travel pass, a ladle or a ladle, tags or tags, a monkey bar or an aquarium, and even a Finn or a Chukhonian - all this symbolizes the diversity of the Russian language, contributes to its development on the basis of historical roots without foreignness and incomprehensible and therefore absurd expressions. The city has a wide trading network. Thank God, the police are not chasing local peddlers; they sell products from the manufacturer, that is, from their own garden. There are also cafes and canteens. The city is not deprived of attractions. The water tower near the railway station still remains. Monument to the feat of railway workers during the Great Patriotic War, etc.

Water tower

The tower was built at the beginning of the 20th century for the needs of the railway station. The building has architectural notes of Art Nouveau style.

During the fighting in the 1940s, the dome of the tower collapsed, so it is now in truncated form.

Church of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa in Mshentsy

The temple stands far from the village on a hill. It was built in 1864 from brick and cut boulder stone. The church was built according to the design of the architect K. Ton in the Russian-Byzantine style. It consists of three elements: the apse, the bell tower and the refectory.

Church of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa in Mshentsy

The interior of the church preserves oil images and ornaments made in the Russian-Byzantine style. The wooden iconostasis also remained intact.

In 1937 the temple was closed, then it fell into disrepair. The church began welcoming parishioners again in 1998. The painting of the temple continues to this day. Behind the altar are the tombstones of patrons of the arts - the couple Count Arkanov and his wife, as well as their children.

Not far from the church there are holy springs with a wooden chapel in honor of the icon of the Kazan Mother of God. At the beginning of the 19th century, an icon of the Kazan Mother of God was found in a reservoir, but it was not possible to raise it. Only after the Divine Liturgy was it possible to get it out and take it with the procession to the Church of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa. There she remained for more than 100 years. In 1937, the church was closed and the icon disappeared.

Every time I visit Bologoye, I come to admire the chapel. My grandmother did not see this beauty and did not live to see it. As a child, in the late 70s, she and I went to buy kerosene; in those days it was something gloomy. Now the Iveron Chapel is one of the symbols of our beloved city.

Let's take a look at the Tver region. Bologoe

You probably know that the city of Bologoe is located approximately in the middle on the railway between St. Petersburg and Moscow. In my article you will see the main attractions of this town, which is best visited in the summer or early autumn, when the “city” lake - Bologoe - is most beautiful.

I have been to the city of Bologoye several times already, and the very first time I came here on a bicycle with a cycling club, when we made a unique trip along an unopened section of the M-11 highway, leaving from the Berezaika station.
Of course, we were eventually asked to leave the highway and scolded, but it was already near the town of Bologoye, and I got my 1000% of unusual pleasure, although, it would seem, asphalt is just asphalt everywhere. By the way, this was the second long bike ride in my life (about 60 km), and you can read about the first HERE .
Lake Bologoe Lake Bologoe

The most convenient way to get to Bologoye from St. Petersburg is by high-speed Lastochka. On various trips I also traveled there by long-distance trains, and once returned from Bologoe to St. Petersburg on Sapsan. You will hear more about this city in my other reviews.

Chapel of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God

The chapel was built in the original Russian-Byzantine style in 1912 in memory of the Bologoe residents who died in a fire in the cinema building. The disaster occurred in February 1911. The fire quickly destroyed the wooden building, killing 101 people.

The building is located on the shore of Lake Bologoe and stands out for its textured appearance. The cross-shaped volume is crowned by a low figure-of-octet, topped with a dome. The central space, located under the dome, is covered with a wooden ceiling.

Chapel of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God

The originality of the small building is given by the bright decor of the facades, which differ in design. The north and south sides are decorated with triple windows. From the east, the façade was decorated with a pattern made of brick. The decor is complemented by light brick, as well as facing the base with gray granite.

"Between Leningrad and Moscow." Bologoye city

The city of Bologoe, Tver region, is in every sense significant for Russia. Located on the highway connecting the two main cities of the country, it is almost exactly in the middle between them (318 km to St. Petersburg and 331 to Moscow). In addition to the fact that a large railway junction was formed here in the century before last (thanks to which Bologoe became some kind of city), a certain sacred-psychological significance is also important: exactly halfway from capital to capital. It turns out that the city itself should be a kind of “mixture” of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Of course, it will be interesting to see what this important link connecting the two Russian capitals is like.

Memorial to those who fell during the Second World War

The monument in honor of the fallen residents of the city of Bologoye during the Great Patriotic War was erected in 1965. It is located on the shore of Lake Bologoe.

The monument is a low obelisk with a star on top. Opposite is the eternal flame. The surrounding area is well-kept and tiled, there are also benches for relaxing. On holidays, flowers are brought to the memorial.

Historical notes

The mention of the village of Bologoe dates back to 1495. A railway station was built in the 19th century. To service it, workshops, depots, warehouses and buildings for railway workers were erected.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the city was actively developing: a school for boys was opened in 1903, a gymnasium for girls began operating in 1906, and a sleeper impregnation plant was built.

In 1917, the village of Bologoe became a city, and then the center of the county. During the Great Patriotic War, Bologoye was heavily bombed as an important railway junction. In total, more than 500 raids were carried out, but the Germans failed to occupy it.

Monument to Love

The monument was erected in 2001 in honor of the meeting between N.K. Roerich and E.I. Shaposhnikova. The initiators of the installation were Bologovo local historians. The monument looks like a large boulder with a sign on which are written the words of N.K. Roerich: “In Bologoye, on the estate of Prince P.A. Putyatin, I met Lada. Companion and inspiration. Joy!".

This meeting influenced the future lives of two extraordinary people and turned into a strong union. In the warm season, there are pots of flowers near the boulder.

The monument was repeatedly desecrated by vandals, but it was always restored.

Roundhouse

A couple of kilometers from the station is the Roundhouse Depot. It was built in 1905 and belongs to the complex of railway station facilities. Previously, electric trains stopped here, but with the advent of Sapsan, the stop was canceled.

The depot is located between two lines of railway tracks. You can approach it via a pedestrian crossing in the area of Veernaya Street. The building is in a dilapidated condition.

A little history

The history of Bologoe differed little from the history of any Russian village until a railway station was opened here in 1851. Since then, Bologoe gradually turned into a major transport hub, a “city of railway workers,” which led to numerous bombings during the Second World War. During all the war years, Bologoye was bombed more than 500 times. Nevertheless, the railway station did not stop its work, and in memory of this feat of the Bologov residents there is a steam locomotive monument at the station.

In the 19th-20th centuries. The cultural center of Bologoe was the Putyatin estate. Her owner was a famous explorer, archaeologist, anthropologist and paleontologist. Prominent figures of Russian anthropology and ethnography, including N. Roerich, often visited the estate. Alas, the estate burned down in 1917.

"Between two capitals." 1st class station Bologoye

The main object of Bologoe is the railway station. Built in the 50s of the last century almost exactly in the middle of the first Russian railway, it has long become such an “iconic” place. Not yet St. Petersburg, but no longer Moscow. Or vice versa.

Of course, it will be interesting to see what this important link connecting the two Russian capitals is like.

Of course, it will be interesting to see what this important link connecting the two Russian capitals is like.

Temple of Tsarevich Alexy

In 1900, an honorary citizen of the village of Bologoye, A.F. Gusev, donated 100 fathoms of land to the monastery for the construction of a chapel with the goal of the speedy birth of an heir to the Russian throne. The Tsarevich was born in July 1904. In honor of the significant event, the Korotsky Monastery built a brick chapel, which was consecrated in September 1904.

In 1909, the Korotsky Monastery was granted a plot of land next to the chapel for the construction of a temple. The process began in 1913, but was not completed in time. The building remained unfinished. After the revolution, the church began to be called Veriginskaya in connection with the name of its location. But from 1924 to 1927, services were held in the church; Father A. Zabolotsky was the rector. After the church was closed, the parish took place in the chapel until 1932.

The church building currently houses the DOSAAF-ROSTO sports and technical club. In 2012, the temple was consecrated in honor of Tsarevich Alexei, and they plan to move the club to another location.

On a note! The temple is decorated with an interesting iconostasis - it represents several classical icons collected from different churches.
