The most interesting museums in the Moscow region

On the territory of the Moscow region there is a huge number of different museum complexes, memorial sites and cultural centers. Many of them are known not only to residents of the Moscow region, but also far beyond. But there are also small exhibition halls that tell visitors about something deeply personal and close to them. Such cultural centers are also an integral part of the greater history of the capital region.

Pastila Museum

  • Address: Posadskaya st., 13A, Kolomna.

Many people have probably forgotten the taste of real apple marshmallow. Once upon a time there was a confectionery shop of the Suranov merchants in Kolomna. This delicious delicacy was produced here. Local confectioners, in addition to traditional types of marshmallows, knew how to make sweets with almonds and berries. There was even an anti-binge candy called “Sobriety.”

In order to revive the former glory of the Kolomna delicacy, they decided to set up a factory-museum of Russian sweets. Here we managed to keep the secrets of making marshmallows. Ancient recipes and technologies help make candies “like before.” Tours of the museum end with tea and tasting of a real Russian delicacy.

Zhukovsky Museum of the History of the Conquest of the Sky

  • Address: st. Chkalova, 41, Zhukovsky.

Zhukovsky near Moscow is a science city where issues related to aviation are studied. A cultural center dedicated to the realization of humanity’s dream – the conquest of the ocean of air – could not fail to appear here. The main city museum tells not only about the history of the settlement near Moscow, but also about the history of the world aircraft industry, and the role of pilots in the Second World War.

The collection of the cultural institution includes about 20 thousand exhibits. They introduce visitors to the life of the first inhabitants of the settlement that arose here in the 17th century, and about the creation of a scientific aviation center in Zhukovsky. Other halls house exhibits informing about the development of aeronautics, telling about the history of aviation and the conquest of the celestial elements.

The museum has many interactive exhibits - there is an old Morse apparatus, you can learn how a parachute opens, and what the operating principle of a wind tunnel is. What attracts the most visitors is the flight simulator room. Here you can feel like a real conqueror of the “fifth ocean”.

Star City

This is a center for training astronauts for flights. It was recently opened to tourists. You can get to Star City with numerous excursions; the program is varied and extensive. An interesting place that has become a well-known landmark quite recently. This means that you have a chance to get there before it has been traveled far and wide, before it has been “cultivated” beyond recognition, and while you still have a chance to be there alone. Soon such an opportunity may not arise.

On the border of the Moscow and Kaluga regions, in the bend of the Nara River, on its steep left bank, a waterfall is born and falls down from a three-meter height. It's not hard to guess why it got its name. Thin jets flying from the cliff form small splashes with which the sun loves to play and shimmer in the rainbow spectrum.

Seven springs come to the surface to delight connoisseurs of Central Russian natural beauty. Picturesque views open from the hilly shore. And on its slopes a lot of strawberries grow during the season. So, if you come here, you definitely won’t regret it.

You can get to the waterfall along the Warsaw Highway, just before reaching the village of Papino, turn right, then along the dirt road to the parking lot, from which you need to walk about 200 meters to the waterfall. It is about 90 km from Moscow.

Pastila Museum in Kolomna

The museum was founded in an ancient wooden house of the merchant Suranov, where in ancient times a merchant's confectionery shop operated. This is the only museum of its kind in the Moscow region.

Museum staff demonstrate the process of preparing a unique Kolomna delicacy. This makes it possible to revive lost traditions, adding modern interest to tourism.

Distance: 14 km from the Moscow Ring Road via Kashirskoye and Green highways.

As they say, those born to crawl should not fly. And you should definitely visit one of the largest artificial underground systems in Russia - the ancient Syanovsky quarry caves in the Moscow region. According to some reports, limestone was mined here for the construction of “white stone” Moscow, because the capital from the village of Starosyanovo is nothing at all: some 20 kilometers along the Kashirskoye Highway.

This place is very popular: on weekends, dozens and even hundreds of people visit the system, up to 600 people celebrate the New Year here, and up to two thousand extreme recreation lovers gather for the annual opening and closing of the speleological season. At the initiation ceremony, “young systems engineers” must prove their agility and squeeze through the narrowest openings – “Pike” and “Pocket”.

The scale of this underground world amazes even experienced speleologists: the total length of the passages studied alone is 19 kilometers, so it is better to take care of finding a guide in advance. Fortunately, among Moscow travel agencies there are many offers of such services: prices start from 2,500 rubles per person, but you can save a thousand and trust the local guides who gather at the “Cat Hole”. And if they like you, they will host you for free and arrange a 5-hour adventure.

An experienced “system specialist” will tell you a lot of chilling legends about the Syans: about the guardian of these caves, Aristarchus, and the mysterious Two-Face, who sometimes rescues good people from trouble, and lures not-so-good people into traps.

These catacombs near Moscow even have their own consecrated Orthodox church with icons and wall paintings on biblical themes, the “Big Column” grotto, where discos and concerts are held, and a grotto-hostel with chairs and sleeping places. And in the endless passages of the Syanovsky quarries there are places where you can swing on an underground swing, get clean water and decent-sized rats run around.

The temperature in the Moscow dungeon is always constant - 10 degrees above zero, and, despite the high humidity, it is easy to breathe here. Therefore, your uniform is a warm tourist uniform. Be sure to take with you a helmet, knee and elbow pads, gloves, a pair of powerful flashlights, a supply of water and food, a dungeon map (it can be found on the Internet) and at least one thin partner - so that he can climb where you cannot. And definitely o.

Dubrovitsy Estate

If you are deciding where to go and what to see in the nearest Moscow region, we advise you to opt for a noble estate in Dubrovitsy in the Podolsk region. It is only 50 km from Moscow. For modern transport capabilities, a car is not a distance, and electric trains run frequently and regularly in the Kursk direction.

Notable boyars and nobles owned this estate at different times, starting with boyar Morozov in the 17th century. It was in the hands of representatives of the Golitsyn family several times and belonged in turn to the favorites of Catherine II, Grigory Potemkin and Alexander Dmitriev-Mamonov.

Each owner, including the Soviet government, tried to bring something of their own into the decoration of the estate. But the most famous building was and remains the Church of the Sign (1697). It is an example of architectural baroque, unusual for the Russian style, and in appearance is in many ways similar to a Catholic church.

The skyward church made of white stone rises on a hill and is the center of the entire estate composition. At its base is an equilateral cross, the temple is decorated with sculptures, and the dome is crowned with a golden crown.

The area adjacent to the temple - the junction point of the two rivers Desna and Pakhra - is picturesque and beautiful at any time of the year. This estate is a traditional place for wedding ceremonies. The local registry office is located nearby; newlyweds hang locks on the railings of the observation deck as a sign of strong love and fidelity. In winter, people go sledding, ice-skating and tubing (cheesecake) down the gentle slopes of the hill.

Gremyachiy key

If you are looking for another place where to visit in the Moscow region would be interesting and useful, visit this waterfall, reminiscent of a mountain river. Here you can get clean holy water, for which people come from different parts with huge flasks.

For those wishing to take a dip in the sacred spring, a special wooden font was built. The water temperature in the springs is 6 degrees, so those who want to take a dip are more likely to do so in the summer heat.

Moscow Children's Railway in Kratovo

Distance: 27 km from the Moscow Ring Road via Novoryazanskoye Highway.

In the Moscow region, between Ramenskoye and Zhukovsky, the Moscow Children's Railway has been operating for 82 years. And, despite the “childishness”, this is a real railway with the most “adult” equipment. The only technical difference from the “big” highway is the smaller track width.

The main characters here are children who work in the depot, as conductors, as drivers, and as linemen. And their senior railway colleagues just watch the coordinated process and rejoice: “The shift is growing!” There are two stations on the line for passenger transportation - “Pionerskaya” and “Yunost”, the latter in Soviet times was called “Put Ilyich”. There is also an intermediate platform “School”.

Anyone can have a blast on the mini-train: the children's train operates five days a week from Tuesday to Saturday, from the end of May until August 26. Children under two years old will be allowed into the carriage free of charge; Children aged two to 10 years old have the right to purchase a child’s ticket, and from the age of 10, a passenger on the children’s railway is already considered an “adult”.

On weekdays, the first train departs from the Pionerskaya station at 11:00, on Saturdays – at 15:00. From Yunost station - half an hour later. In case of a hurricane, heavy rain or air temperature above 28 degrees, trains are canceled.
