Zavodoukovsk
(Russian: Zavodoukovsk) is a city in Tyumen Oblast, Russia, located on the Bolshoy Uk River (Tobol bracket) 96 km (60 mi) southeast of Tyumen, the administrative center of the region. At the 2010 census its population was 25,647. [2]
general information
The city is located in the forest-steppe zone of Western Siberia (on the extreme western part of the Ishim Plain), on the Uk River (the right tributary of the Tobol, slightly south of the confluence of the Begila River). In the north and southwest, Zavodoukovsk is surrounded by forests. The regional center of Tyumen is located 100 km to the southeast. In the northwest (28 km) is the nearest city of Yalutorovsk.
There are two stable versions of the origin of the name of the village. According to one of them, the word “factory on Uke” is associated with the river and the distillery located on it. Uk - translated from ancient Turkic as arrow. Other researchers believe that in the 18th and 19th centuries a special settlement, traditional for those years, could have been organized here - a factory, intended for the recreation of convicts sent to Siberia.
Weaknesses of Zavodoukovsk
- Outflow of the working-age population . Although the total number of residents remains constant, there is a decrease in the young population and an increase in the proportion of the older population. This is due, first of all, to the proximity of the regional center of the city of Tyumen, with a high level of salaries, with widely represented higher educational institutions and with fewer restrictions in choosing a profession.
- Housing shortage . An insufficient volume of it is being introduced, while the main share is occupied by individual buildings, which often do not meet all standards, which is accompanied by fragility and, today, a high percentage of depreciation of the housing stock.
- Poor quality of water and roads . The poor condition of water supply and sewerage networks, and in extreme areas their absence altogether, has led to a significant deterioration in water quality. Unsatisfactory condition of roads, lack of hard surface in some areas, difficulties with maintenance in winter. Inadequate railway crossings.
- Low use of natural resources . Poor equipment of mining companies, low volumes of extracted natural resources, and insufficient local deep processing. Problems in the tourism infrastructure, except for mineral springs, other areas, primarily fishing and hunting, are in their infancy.
- Aging and inflexibility of production . High wear and tear of production assets, insufficient technical level at the city-forming enterprise. The narrow focus of the city’s products, supplied mainly to oil and gas producing enterprises in the north, which leads to risks of dependence on the situation in the country and oil prices.
Story
The founding date of the village of Ukovskaya is considered to be 1729, then there were 8 households in it, in 1749 there were already 25 of them. In 1740-1744, the Ukovsky distillery was built, which was nationalized and closed at the turn of the 18th-19th centuries. It was only in 1860 that industrial alcohol production was re-opened. In 1912, a railroad passed through the village.
After the revolution in 1929, Zavodoukovsk became a workers' village, a grain farm was organized, and an elevator was built. On April 26, 1960 it received the status of a city of regional subordination. In subsequent years (Soviet and post-Soviet), several industrial enterprises were built, which currently provide the population of the city of Zavodoukovsk with jobs.
Sanatorium "Ingala"
After a master class and a hearty lunch at the Wonderful Valley teahouse, we headed outside the city. For this purpose, the administration provided a car and accompanying people, two representatives of the museum and the head of the cultural department.
Before leaving the city, we toured a wonderful complex for training and biathlon competitions. High-level athletes come here to train and compete. True, we ended up at the complex at the wrong time of the pandemic, and that day only a few women who had crossed the Balzac age line were walking along the path along the shooting range with sticks.
When asked about thermal springs known far beyond the borders of Zavodoukovsk, we were advised not to rush - with a hint that everything was still to come.
And soon the entire delegation was already standing on the platform, from where a large clearing was visible, where once there was the first spring, in which local residents and guests of the city began to bathe. It doesn't work now. This fact was explained by thoughtless human intervention - that same notorious human factor, which often becomes the culprit of many of humanity’s ills.
In contrast to the mistake people made in this place, the Ingala sanatorium arose , which they showed us - modern and making a very tempting impression. True, for the same reason the coronavirus remained unapproachable for us. I had to listen to the entire content while standing at the gate and looking at the object from behind the fence.
And yet the impression of the sanatorium can be formed from this position. The beautiful buildings look great against the backdrop of the same pine forests surrounding the sanatorium and feeding the atmosphere with healing air. In normal “peaceful” times it is crowded here. Not only people from the Tyumen region, but also from beyond its borders come to relax and improve their health. Families also go on weekends.
Population before the revolution
At the time of the founding of the village, which consisted of 8 households, the population of Zavodoukovsk was several dozen residents. 58 years later, in 1787, when the village received the status of the volost village of Zavodoukovsky, there were already 180 households and 988 women and 980 men lived. In subsequent years, industry collapsed in the village, so the population grew due to the movement of peasants from the central provinces.
Population in modern times
In the post-revolutionary years, the population of Zavodoukovsk continued to grow due to the organization of new jobs in agriculture. The first official data dates back to 1939, when 6,000 residents lived in the workers’ settlement. During the war years, thousands of evacuees and front-line soldiers who were undergoing treatment came to the settlement. Many of them remained to live in this beautiful Siberian village.
In 1959, 8,700 people already lived in the village. In 1967, 15,000 people lived in the city (city status was awarded in 1960). In addition to natural growth, the population of Zavodoukovsk increased due to the annexation of two villages.
In subsequent years, the number of residents grew quite quickly. During the best years of Soviet power, from 1970 to 1979, it increased from 17,461 to 21,450 people. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, in 1989, 25,827 people lived here. The maximum population of 26,800 inhabitants was reached in 1998.
Unlike many Russian cities, during the crisis years of the 90s the population continued to increase due to the construction of modern industries. In subsequent years, the number of residents rose and fell slightly. Over the past three years, the population of Zavodoukovsk has grown due to natural growth. In 2022, the city had a population of 26,006.
Zavodoukovsk, a city with a great future
Founded in 1729, from a small village of 8 courtyards by 1960 it turned into a regional center. Although today it is the smallest city in the Tyumen region, with a population of 26.2 thousand people and an area of 21 square kilometers , it plays an important role in the development of the region. Favorable transport location, the Trans-Siberian railway and the Tyumen-Omsk highway, rich natural resources and high potential for the development of a tourist destination attract attention to it and have a beneficial effect on the development of its economic and social spheres.
Economy
The volume of products produced in the region is more than 4.3 billion rubles. The largest share is in the manufacturing industry—about 82%. The largest share in production is occupied by the production of mobile buildings, commercial timber, prefabricated reinforced concrete structures and meat products.
The city-forming enterprise is JSC Zavodoukovsky Machine-Building Plant, which produces mobile multifunctional buildings (more than 50 modifications), from residential to saunas and canteens, which are in high demand among oil and gas industry enterprises. Ships up to 1,300 mobile buildings annually.
Another large enterprise is ZAO Zavodoukovsky Construction Materials Plant, which produces about 30 thousand cubic meters. m of prefabricated reinforced concrete structures. In 1994, a modern meat processing plant, Puragrouk OJSC, was built in the city.
