Geography
Novoshakhtinsk is one of the large cities of the Rostov region, located in the western intraregional economic region, and belongs to the border territories that are part of the Donbass Euroregion.
The area of the city is 138 sq. km, the population is over 109.2 thousand people.
Novoshakhtinsk is a city with a developed transport infrastructure, due to the road lines of federal (M-4 "DON" and M-19 "Rostov-Kharkov") and regional significance ("Novoshakhtinsk-Gukovo" and "Novoshakhtinsk-Rodionovo-Nesvetaiskaya-Rostov").
The transport route leads to the largest international automobile checkpoint in the south of the country, Novoshakhtinsk, which makes the city the most important stage on the route of cargo from Europe and Turkey to the European part of Russia. In addition, the Nesvetaysky customs post of the Rostov customs operates on the territory of the city.
Novoshakhtinsk is located 80 km from the regional center of the Rostov region - Rostov-on-Don. Relatively short distances separate the city from a number of industrial centers in the region: Krasny Sulin, Shakhty, Zverevo, Gukovo. The city is surrounded by agricultural lands of the Krasnosulinsky and Oktyabrsky districts of the Rostov region.
Story
The city was founded on January 31, 1939 in the southeastern part of the Donetsk coal basin on the border with Ukraine (Lugansk region). The history of the city of Novoshakhtinsk is closely connected with the history of the development of the coal mining industry in our country.
Since 1937, 11 mines, united in the Nesvetayanthracite trust, operated on its territory.
In parallel with the coal industry, enterprises in auxiliary industries also developed in the city: construction industry enterprises, a city industrial complex, dairy and bread factories, a clothing factory, and branches of Rostov defense plants.
During the history of its development, Novoshakhtinsk went through three different in time, but very intense periods of events: the Great Patriotic War, the shock years of socialist construction, perestroika and restructuring of the coal industry in the 90s of the twentieth century.
As a result of the restructuring of the coal industry and the complete liquidation of coal enterprises by city leaders in the early 2000s. a course was taken to diversify the economy and develop small businesses.
Today Novoshakhtinsk positions itself as an innovative, industrial and transport and logistics center; a city where they study, work, relax and welcome guests.
Economy
Modern Novoshakhtinsk is a city with a diversified economy and a stable base for further dynamic development. Increasing its production potential, the city is developing in sectors that are strategically important for it: food production, clothing production, production of finished metal products, transport logistics, trade. At the same time, the main role in the structure of the economy is played by manufacturing enterprises, which are constantly modernizing and expanding production.

Every year in Novoshakhtinsk the number of small businesses is growing. Social sphere
The city's education system is represented at all levels, including a higher education institution - a branch of the Southern Federal University. Novoshakhtinsk is characterized by a high percentage of children and adolescents enrolled in the additional education system.
The pride of municipal institutions of additional education is the Center for the Development of Creativity of Children and Youth, which has 7 structural divisions - teenage clubs at the place of residence, the largest of them - "Constellation" - is equipped as part of the implementation of the "Accessible Environment" program with equipment for working with children with disabilities .
In addition, in a separate structural unit of the teenage club at the place of residence of children and adolescents “Youth Palace” of the Center for the Development of Creativity of Children and Youth, a Multifunctional Youth Center and a Volunteer Development Center have been operating since 2022.

Over the past 5 years, the population has decreased by 1.5 percent. The structure of the population in Novoshakhtinsk is dominated by women. In 2022, their share was 54.1 percent. Moreover, the size of the male population decreases significantly with the transition from one age group to another. Thus, if in the age group of 50-54 years women make up 55.9 percent (men - 44.1 percent), then with the transition to the age group 70-74 years the share of women accounts for 61.3 percent (men - 38.7 percent). ). In terms of national composition, the following situation has developed. Of people living in the city who identified themselves as Russians - 94.2 percent, Ukrainians - 1.6 percent, Gypsies - 0.7 percent, Armenians - 0.8, Azerbaijanis and Georgians - 0.2 percent, Dagestanis - 0.1 percent.
There is a natural decline
The main indicators of population change are natural and mechanical decline. The determining factor in population decline is its natural decline. To a large extent, the increase in mortality is associated with deteriorating public health. There is an insufficient quality of medical care for the population, a lack of certain medical services in the city, and a significant increase in the cost of medicines. The low birth rate is also somewhat influenced by the socio-economic situation in the country: rising prices for utilities, food and goods, and especially for children's products, low wages. Although it should be noted that state programs carried out by the government (receipt of maternity capital, mortgage lending) have contributed to an increase in the birth rate in a number of regions in recent years. At the moment, we are seeing further development of programs in the coming years. The government is interested in the growth of the country's population as a whole, which is constrained by the presence of a number of factors (criteria) that take place.
About unemployment
The number of unemployed for 2014-2018 is characterized by minor fluctuations, except for 2015. For the last two years, its value has not changed. The total number of unemployed may exceed the number of registered unemployed several times. This significant discrepancy in the amounts of total and registered unemployment is explained by the fact that a significant part of the unemployed prefer to search for work on their own, without registering with the employment center. As a result, many residents who are unable to find well-paid jobs in the city are forced to leave in search of work in other regions of the country.
About income
Incomes of the city's population continue to remain low. To determine the dynamics of the average monthly accrued wages for a full range of enterprises and organizations, we use data for November of the study period - 2014-2018. With the growth of the average monthly salary in the city in 2014-2018, there is a lag behind the level of wages in the region as a whole.
