Sizran

- a Russian city in the Samara region, located on the right bank of the Volga River, at the mouth of the Syzranka River.

Syzran (from Turkic - “flowing from a ravine”) was founded in 1683

like a fortress. Although settlements existed here earlier, a Syzran settlement dating back to approximately the 4th century BC was discovered on the site of the city. The fortress guarded the southern approaches to the Samara Luka, rich in salt pans and fish.

In 1796, the fortress received city status. In the second half of the 19th century, with the advent of the railway network, Syzran became a major transshipment point for goods, an intermediary between water and land routes. The status of an important transport hub of the Samara region has been preserved to this day; 6 railway directions intersect in Syzran.

Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan In 1830, a cholera epidemic occurred in the city. However, the pestilence suddenly stopped on the autumn feast of the Icon of the Kazan Mother of God. In memory of this, the townspeople annually organize a religious procession. In 1880, the largest bridge across the Volga in Europe at that time was opened near the city.

Many large enterprises were built in Soviet Syzran. Among them: state district power station, Kashpirsky oil shale plant, clothing and furniture factories, food concentrates plant.

The development of the city did not stop even during the Great Patriotic War.

The former estate of the tradesman M. Chernukhin now houses an Exhibition Hall

Modern Syzran is a large industrial city with a developed chemical and oil refining industry.

By decree of the President of the Russian Federation dated September 10, 2022, the city was awarded the title “City of Labor Valor.”

Attractions

The city has many architectural monuments of the 17th-20th centuries: the Spasskaya Tower of the Syzran Kremlin - the same age as the city, the Nativity Cathedral, the holy spring of the Feodorovskaya Mother of God, the Cathedral of the Kazan Mother of God, the building of the city bank.

Interesting

that the symbol of the city is the tomato.

The tomato was brought here several centuries ago from Astrakhan, and the vegetable took root so much that in times of famine Syzran supplied it not only to local residents, but also traded it all the way to the Urals.

The symbol of Syzran is a tomato.

The city has acquired the unspoken nickname “tomato capital”. Since 2001, the Syzran Tomato festival has been held here, culminating in tomato fights among the townspeople.

The city has a population of more than 167 thousand people (2020).

Day of the city

Syzran is celebrated on the first weekend of September.

Historical sketch

Founded in 1683 by voivode Prince G.A. Kozlovsky as a fortress on the high steep bank of the Syzran River, near its confluence with the Volga, on the site of the Syzran settlement (4th century BC). The fortress was part of the Syzran serif line. Name by river Syzran, where the fortress was located. In the description of the 18th century. the hydronym is indicated in the forms Syza, Syzan from the Tatar syza “ravine, beam”; the element -ran can be explained as an indicator of the Chuvash initial case, corresponding to the Russian preposition from, i.e. the name is Turkic and means “ravine river; flowing from a ravine.”

From 1717 in the Astrakhan province, from 1728 in the Sinbir province of the Kazan province. Since 1780, the district city of Syzran of the Simbirsk governorship (since 1796 - Simbirsk province).

In 1856, in the district city of Syzran, Siberian province, there were 10 churches, 2907 houses, 361 shops.

In 1874 the Syzran-Vyazemskaya railway was built, in 1876 - the Farmers-Orenburg, in 1898 - the Moscow-Ryazan railway. Syzran was a major transshipment point for goods from railways to Volga ships and vice versa. In 1880, 18 km above Syzran, the Syzran (Alexandrovsky) bridge across the Volga was opened - the largest in Europe in the 19th century. (now within the city of Oktyabrsk).

At the end of the 19th century. In Syzran, the main industry was flour milling. Syzran ranked 4th in Russia in grain processing, second only to Nizhny Novgorod, Saratov, and Samara.

In 1906, the city was severely damaged by a fire that destroyed 3,540 buildings, incl. 6 churches and a convent.

Since 1928, Syzran has been in the Middle Volga region (since 1929, a region), since 1936, as part of the Kuibyshev region.

In the 1920-30s. a hydroelectric power station was built (1929), the Kashpir oil shale plant (1932), the Suran oil field was created (1937), a clothing and furniture factory was opened (1935), and a food concentrates plant (1936).

During the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45, locomotive (1941) and oil refinery (1942) plants were established.

In 1942, the working villages of Batraki (22.3 thousand inhabitants, 1939) and Kashpirovka (5.4 thousand inhabitants, 1939, PGT since 1932) became part of Syzran.

In the post-war period, the city's industry developed intensively; the Syzran Thermal Power Plant (1947), a soot plant (1967), etc. were put into operation.

In 1997, the urban settlement Novokashpirsky was included in the city.

How was the population census in Syzran? (2021)

A completely useless fiction, judging by the information I have, took place instead of a population census. In any case, here in Syzran. But I don’t think that in other cities of Russia anything is very different.

According to official data, more than 100% of the population of the Russian Federation took part in the population census... This was reported by the Kommersant publication with reference to the head of Rosstat Pavel Smelov.

Several people from among the census takers immediately told me that they were able to rewrite no more than 50% of the list of people issued by the coordination center. However, the census coordinators were not satisfied with this result and the census takers were forced to fill out the databases with fake, that is, fictitious, personalities.

The failed 2022 census cannot be blamed on the census takers - they probably did everything they could. But many people were not at home - young people often remain at work until late in the evening, which is why pensioners mainly participated in the census. Of course, it was possible to participate in the census through Gosuslugi, but some people did not know about this, and some did not participate on principle or for political reasons.

To confirm or refute the information about the fictitiousness of the census, I launched polls on social networks. Of course, due to the small number of people I interviewed, it cannot be said that the results of the surveys I conducted are objective and reflect reality. But apparently, they are quite close to reality.

On the social network Vkontakte, where my audience was predominantly young or middle-aged, only 8 people out of 25 respondents provided information about themselves to the state. This confirms the information that young people participated in the census very little. Seven people (including me) refused on principle to participate in the census, citing either distrust of the authorities and reluctance to interact with them in any way, or the uselessness of the census itself. Ten of the 25 people either did not know about the census, or the census taker was unable to find them at home.

In Odnoklassniki, there were slightly more people who took part in the census. This is explained by the fact that this social network is more often used by people of pre-retirement and retirement age. They were at home more often than the younger generation, so it was easier for census takers to find them at their place of residence and collect all the necessary data. In my survey on Odnoklassniki, 49 people responded, more than half of whom took part in the population census. 13 people (26.5%) refused to provide their data to the census takers, and another 10 people either had not heard about the census, or the census takers were unable to find them at home.

It is difficult to judge how much the collected data, of which approximately 50% will be fictitious, will help this state improve our lives. However, hardly anyone can believe in the improvement of living conditions. Just look at the perversion of the Constitution, before which we were also promised a lot of things, but only the nullification of the presidential terms worked in full: a special clause that was not in the perverted Constitution, but which was an undiscussed appendage to it.

Surely they did not help, and even in many ways aggravated the situation with the reluctance of the population to participate in the census, publications in the media (and on personal pages), which reported on the participation in the census of the governor of the Samara region, United Russia deputies and other personalities not particularly beloved by the people . Many felt there were notes of propaganda and imposition in this, which only strengthened the disgust of opposition-minded citizens towards government data collection. Previous actions of the authorities played a big role in this: imposing the need to pervert the Constitution and imposing the need for vaccination against coronavirus.

A lot of budget funds were spent on the population census, namely 32 billion rubles, a significant part of which, according to my suspicions, ended up in someone’s pockets at the top of the bureaucratic pyramid. So maybe this was the main purpose of the population census?

By the way, it is expected that the official results of the 2021 population census will be published no earlier than April 2022.

PS There were three more people who did not want to participate in the polls I organized because of open voting (in the polls you can see who voted and how), but they informed me that they deliberately refused to participate in the population census.
