Story

The city is located at the confluence of the Kalitva River and the Seversky Donets, 168 km from Rostov-on-Don. The area at the intersection of four deep rivers has been inhabited since ancient times: excavations and random finds indicate that people lived here 4,000 years ago. Objects belonging to the Timber-frame culture of the Bronze Age were discovered. 30 years ago, in one of the city courtyards, the remains of a burial and objects of the catacomb culture of the Bronze Age (2000 BC) were also found. According to a number of researchers, the battle of the Russians with the Polovtsians in 1185, sung in “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign,” took place between the Kalitva and Bystraya rivers. Historian V.A. Afonasyev believed that the path of Igor’s army lay through the present-day Donbass and ended on the left bank of the Seversky Donets near Kalitva. Fast - then full-flowing - Kayala. Another researcher V.I. Streletsky believed that Kayala is Kalitva.

The first Cossack settlement on the site of the current city appeared in 1703 by decree of Peter I. This date is officially considered the year of birth of the city of Belaya Kalitva. After the formation of the Rostov region on September 13, 1937, the Belokalitvensky district with its center in the village of Ust-Belocalitvenskaya became part of it. The entire pre-revolutionary and current history of Belaya Kalitva is connected with the Cossacks. In May 1918, the headquarters of the 5th and 3rd Ukrainian Red Armies under the command of K. E. Voroshilov was located in Ust-Belokalitvenskaya for several days.

During the Great Patriotic War, Belaya Kalitva was under occupation for six months (from July 20, 1942 to January 19, 1943). Her liberation took place in the area of the Battle of Stalingrad. At that difficult time for the country and the city, 3 dozen soldiers of eight nationalities under the command of Lieutenant Annaklych Atayev repeated the feat of Panfilov’s soldiers near Belaya Kalitva; The squadron of the 112th Bashkir Cavalry Division took the height and held it for more than a day. A. Ataev was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union posthumously.

our pride

New buildings in the city Entrance to the stadium Palace of Culture School No. 2 When you go out to the outskirts of Belaya Kalitva, the first thing that catches your eye is the forest of new buildings.
High in the sky above them, like giant steel arms, the lacy arrows of tower cranes stretched out. Here, step by step, scrapers and bulldozers move forward, to the east. They are waging a duel with the sands, with the steppe, conquering more and more sites for future new buildings. But none of this existed here before. Builders conquered the steppe. Belaya Kalitva has grown, transformed, and become younger. The White Kalitvinians also became different culturally. Three cinemas have been built for them, and there are up to a dozen libraries. The number of schools and medical institutions is growing every year. The education system of Belaya Kalitva and the region includes 45 preschool institutions and 52 secondary schools, including 12 primary, 13 basic and 27 secondary. There are 13,779 students studying there! There is a cadet corps, a boarding school and a rehabilitation center, 7 additional education institutions, and a private English language school. Five schools received Cossack status.

We have always been seriously involved in local history. Nowadays there are school museums in almost every farm school. The environmental work of schoolchildren is relevant. In honor of the 300th anniversary of Belaya Kalitva, young ecologists carried out certification of 37 springs in the area. For success in environmental education of schoolchildren, the Belokalitva education department has received an award from the regional committee for environmental protection for two years in a row.

Snow-white city In Belaya Kalitva and the Belokalitvinsky district there are 43 club institutions, 3 car clubs, a city museum of local lore, three music schools and an art school, two parks and three recreation areas. Amateur artistic performances are represented by 195 groups, including folklore groups. The first village Cossack choir was created by Miron Ivanovich Balakhnin. His daughter Maria Mironovna Moshkarina took up the baton. Her children's folklore ensemble “Zorenka” is known throughout the region! Since the time of Professor A.M. Listopadov, cultural workers collect ancient Cossack songs, replenishing the golden fund of folk art.

...Belaya Kalitva...Yes, she really is white. No matter which way you look at it, you clearly see a snow-white new city, as if washed by the first spring rains, immersed in the emerald greenery of maples, poplars and vineyards. Two- and three-story houses sparkle with their whiteness. The Palace of Culture rises majestically above the rectangular blocks of residential buildings. And nature has surrounded all this with a blue ribbon of the Seversky Donets and the Kalitva River. And nearby, almost on the very bank of the river, lies the city stadium. All conditions for cultural recreation of workers have been created here. Young people have access to a football field, running tracks, and numerous gymnastic equipment. Is this why many young men and women, having finished work, rush here to watch a football match or simply practice.

Religion

Church of the Entry of the Mother of God into the Temple, 1942.
In the city there is the Church of the Entry into the Temple of the Mother of God (Bolshaya St., 2), originally built in the 1780s from wood and rebuilt in stone in 1896-1905. In the 1930s it was closed and the crosses, domes, bell tower and iconostasis were removed. The temple was open for worship during the Great Patriotic War, but in 1961 it will be closed again for the construction of the House of Pioneers. In 1988 it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church, which began its restoration. [ ][ 19 ]

Another of the local churches is the Church of the Icon of the Sovereign Mother of God (“Sovereign”, Standardstroy Street, 18), built between 2004 and 2007. [ 20 ] [ ]

Belaya Kalitva name history

One day the palace was shaken by noise and roar, and the blue-eyed slave disappeared. Many were captured on suspicion of complicity. The servants were tortured, but no one could explain, but many were convinced that the stone man came to life and turned into a real one. All the locks opened before his eyes. He took the girl to the seashore, where fleet-footed horses were waiting for them. They were heading north. Khan sent pursuit after them. Day and night the blue-eyed girl gallops with her lover, and now half of the Wild Field is behind. This is Mother Rus'. But the Khan’s fast horses began to overtake the fugitive, and then the young man suggested: “Run, my love, I’ll hold them back!” The girl did not agree and watched the unequal battle from behind the trees.

Many of the khan's messengers died in the field, while others turned back and galloped away. The young man was mortally wounded and only managed to say: “I’m sorry, my love, that I didn’t make it.” She buried him under a tall tree, and the inconsolable one herself turned into a clean, transparent spring, which ran across the endless steppe, meeting chalk mountains, copses, merging with other springs, and gave rise to the Kalitva River. They say that if you look closely into the spring, you can see a beautiful girl. The city was named after the river.

You ask: “Why White?” And it is White, because upstream the Donets there are chalk mountains. During the flood, the river washed them away, and the water in it became white, like milk.

But there are other versions, one of them is that the territory of the city was covered with thorns. In the spring, when it bloomed, the city turned white. Another version is that our rivers used to have clean, transparent water, and everything that was clean and transparent was called white by the Cossacks. Over the centuries, ancient tribes passed through our land: Scythians, Sarmatians, Huns, Khazars, Polovtsians, etc. Only numerous burial mounds in the steppe remember them.

In 1703, military ataman Ekim Filipyev issued a letter to the Cossacks: Sysoy Ermolaev, Mikhail Nikitin and Emelyan Dorogalny, allowing them to populate the mouth of the Kalitva River.

The city of Belaya Kalitva in the Rostov region

Belaya Kalitva was founded in 1703, and the first mentions of it are associated with the times of “The Tale of Igor’s Campaign,” when the Russian army was killed in the battle with the Polovtsians. Archaeological excavations say that people lived here in the 2nd millennium BC. The city itself is quite green and clean, and makes a pleasant impression. The only thing was that it was difficult to navigate the road, since the city has an irregular shape and is divided by rivers; we got lost several times and went to the wrong place. Belaya Kalitva is located in the center of the Rostov region and is the cradle of the Don Cossacks.

The route of our trip and its concept can be seen here: We are participating in the project “Russia in 365 days”

The surroundings of Belaya Kalitva are very picturesque: hills, rocky Avila Mountains, and the wide Seversky Donets River flows through it. We rarely visit the steppe, but we got the impression that the Belokalitvensky region has a landscape uncharacteristic for the steppes. Despite our love for dense forests, we often couldn't take our eyes off one or another spectacular view.

Mayakovsky Park

Confluence of rivers Embankment of the park A landmark of the city has become the reconstructed central park of culture and recreation named after.
V.V. Mayakovsky, located between the rivers, where Kalitva flows into the Donets. A unique park in the floodplain of the Kalitva River. The Mayakovsky Park of Culture and Recreation was founded in the 19th century. This is a beautiful place with a magnificent modern embankment, many skillful sculptures, and themed corners reflecting the history of the city. There is a well-maintained beach next to the park. The plans of city organizations include the creation of a city sandy beach on the banks of the Donets. It's big, beautiful, and full of unexpected discoveries. Our park is good. Mayakovsky in any weather, winter and summer, although there is a difference in these seasons. In addition to the attractions, vacationers have access to a zoo and cozy tables, both in the “Golden Fish” and at the tables by the pool with swans, where the smell of barbecue is already emanating from the barbecue. So, dear friends, there is a place in our city where you can relax with the whole family and bring guests from other places. By the way, the city park named after. Mayakovsky took first place among all parks in the Rostov region in terms of a combination of parameters: equipment, landscaping and other items.

Karaul Mountain

Karaul Mountain is closely connected with the Tale of Igor's Campaign. In 1970, a monument to brave Russians was erected. Previously, a reconstruction of the battle and Kayal readings took place here (then they were moved).

People of Belaya Kalitva

First of all, Belaya Kalitva will be of interest to history buffs; this is its main attraction. What happened here: genocide against the Cossacks, numerous territorial transformations, occupation and prisoner of war camps, battles for liberation. At the same time, judging by historical information, there is a large percentage of people here who have done something outstanding: 19 heroes of the USSR during the Great Patriotic War, 3 holders of the Order of Glory, 29 laureates of State Prizes, 7 world champions, dozens of champions of Russia and Europe. But this is just a town of miners and metallurgists. There is probably something special about these lands...

I wrote about some people living now, who do not complain about their bad life and are gradually changing the world in this article - Belaya Kalitva and people who love their city.

Microdistrict Solnechny

The Solnechny microdistrict (alluvium) is young and modern.
Residents of the town of metallurgists and residents of Solnechny are arguing whose area is better. The town has its own charm of streets with two or three-story houses and quiet courtyards. There is breadth, space and openness in Solnechny. What's good is what you love. In the center of the alluvium, in a short period of time, an Orthodox Church of the Sovereign Icon of the Mother of God was erected using donations from Belokalitva residents. Its golden domes shine in the sun. Services are underway, but finishing work continues. There is a monument in the park next to the temple. The Bell of Chernobyl and the lists of dead liquidators... And this touching sculpture appeared quite recently. “My dear old people” - that’s what the author called it.

Cossack Cadet Corps

On the topic of people and the new generation... In Belaya Kalitva there is a prestigious Cossack cadet corps, where children not only from the Rostov region, but also from the Krasnodar Territory, Moscow and Siberia come to study. Unfortunately, the school was undergoing renovations, and we just walked around the empty rooms.

City flowers

Decoration of the city Sculptures and flowers “You have captured my heart forever...”
If there were no flowers in the city, it would be gray and boring. Floral oases in the gray asphalt - a splash of wonderful colors, amazing shapes and lines. Flowers are living beauty!

There is a special attitude towards city flowers. They are cherished, protected, and admired by thousands of people. And only an unkind hand will reach out to pick a flower that is already blooming for you and for everyone. In Belaya Kalitva, flower beds are full of flowers from spring to late autumn. On Theater Square, tulips are the first to wake up, and during the time of mass flowering, you can’t take your eyes off the bright flaming bowls. They are replaced by a pink sea, and it changes shades with each “tide”. Flower seedlings migrate to city flower beds from the greenhouse of the Green World Municipal Unitary Enterprise. Thanks to the efforts of this team, sometimes a miracle happens before our eyes - quite recently, in place of an inactive fountain in the Solnechny microdistrict, a flower bed appeared, which one day was full of cheerful heads of petunias. Residents of many homes decorate their yards with flowers and lovingly care for them. It’s very nice to see original flower beds at private shops, whose owners made sure that people were greeted and greeted by beauty.

Every year on City Day we host flower exhibitions. Belokalitvinsk residents willingly present luxurious bouquets and compositions made from material grown on their plots. An obligatory participant in exhibitions is the city club of amateur flower growers.
