The Altai Territory as a territorial entity arose in 1937. It is one of the parts of Western Siberia. It is located in the southeast of the region and covers an area of 169.1 thousand km2. The territory of the Altai Territory stretches from the northern part to the southern part for about 400 km, and from the western to the eastern part, about 600 km.
The northern part of the Altai Territory borders the Novosibirsk region, the northeastern neighbors are the Kemerovo region, the southeastern part borders the Altai Republic, and the southwestern part borders the Pavlodar and East Kazakhstan regions of Kazakhstan.
The territory of the Altai Territory has mountains in the east, the landscape of the central part is elevated plains, and the western and southwestern parts are rich in steppes: Aleiskaya and Kulundinskaya. The region has the following natural zones: steppe, forest-steppe, mountains, taiga, rivers and lakes.
Minerals
The Altai region is rich in mineral resources - soda, coal, cobalt, precious metals and others. In the bowels of the earth there are deposits of marble, jasper, and various granites. The Altai region is famous for its drinking and mineral waters, as well as natural mud for the treatment of many diseases.
In the Altai Territory, the extraction of rare but necessary raw materials for the Russian Federation has been established, namely ores that contain gold, gallium, barite, cadmium and others. But the Altai Territory is not deprived of forest resources. 3471.5 thousand hectares are occupied by forestry. Both cedar and deciduous trees and shrubs grow on the territory of the fund.
Administrative structure
The administrative center of the Altai Territory is the city of Barnaul. The population of Barnaul is 635,550 people. Barnaul is the cultural, industrial, and medical capital of the Altai Territory, which is also an educational center with many public and private universities and research institutes.
In Barnaul, art lovers can visit many museums, theaters and architectural monuments of the 18th-20th centuries. Not far from the city, the international airport Barnaul receives its passengers.
Altai Territory consists of 11 cities and 60 municipal districts. Cities of the region: Barnaul, Aleysk, Biysk, Kamen-on-Obi, Belokurikha, Rubtsovsk, Slavgorod, Zarinsk, Yarovoe, Novoaltaisk, ZATO Sibirsky.

Nikolai Drokov says that at the end of last year he noticed that the horses were scared of something. Perhaps this has something to do with the shooting of an entire herd.
The farmer said that his friend had an apiary three kilometers from the place where the animals were shot, and he heard popping noises. The last time the beekeeper saw the horses alive was January 3.
A relative of the Drokovs, Alexander Cherepanov, says that he has loved horses since childhood, and now keeps five trotters:
“Something difficult happens in life, I always go to the horses at such moments. I hug them, talk, it makes me feel better. I was horrified when I saw this picture. Humor always saves me, but here I was talking with another journalist, and a tear came to my mind. What kind of heart does it take to lay down a whole herd.”

The man does not understand what the motive was for those who brutally shot the animals. He says it’s definitely impossible to take revenge for this in the “eye for an eye” style.
“If suddenly someone started a war in this way, it definitely needs to be stopped,” says Cherepanov.
Population
The religion of the Altai region is diverse. In it you will find Orthodox communities under the leadership of Bishop Maxim of Barnaul and Altai, six active monasteries, as well as about 179 parishes. You can pray in the Intercession Cathedral, which operates in Barnaul, and in the Assumption Cathedral, which is located in the city of Biysk.
Both Lutheran and Catholic communities have their importance. The Muslim community is also influential. The Armenian Apostolic Church operates in the Altai Territory. Buddhism is also represented.
Representatives of the following nationalities live on the territory of the Altai Territory: the largest percentage of the population are Russians, then Germans, followed by Ukrainians, and the remaining percentage includes other nationalities: Jews, Armenians and other peoples.
Altai Territory has a continental climate. Hot short summers with temperatures that reach up to +42C and long cold winters with temperatures ranging up to -55C.

- August 6, 2016. Russia's first space control system (space threat search system) was put into operation in the Altai Territory. The complex is located in the Zmeinogorsk region of the region, on the basis of the Altai Optical and Laser Center named after Titov. - November 8, 2016. A new bridge across the Charysh River was opened in the Altai Territory, the cost of which was 180 million rubles. The length of the bridge was 138 meters, and the load capacity was about 80 tons.[5]
- December 26, 2016. A feed mill with a design capacity of 5 tons per hour was launched in the Altai Territory. The total investment in the project amounted to 120 million rubles.[6]

How did it all begin?
Russians began to populate the foothills of Altai and the Upper Ob region in the second half of the 17th century. The development of Altai began after the Beloyarsk and Bikatun fortresses were built here, respectively, in 1717 and 1718, for protection from the Dzungar nomads.
In order to explore ore deposits, prospecting parties began to be sent to Altai. It is believed that their discoverers were the father and son Kostylevs; later Akinfiy Demidov, a Ural breeder, took advantage of these results.
Water resources
One of the most famous natural features of the Altai Territory is its lakes. They attract tourists with their picturesque beauty and clean water. Some are credited with healing or magical properties. The most interesting bodies of water:
- Lake Bolshoye Yarovoye. Located in the Kulunda steppe. It is distinguished by its large size - width 8 and length 11 km with a maximum depth of 10.5 m. It has steep, gently sloping banks. The lake is unusual in that it is not connected to any rivers or streams and is fed exclusively by rain, melting snow and groundwater.
- Kolyvanskoe or Savushkino lake. Popular among tourists due to its very beautiful granite surroundings. There are several sandy beaches around the reservoir with a smooth entry into the water, and the bottom is covered with silt.
- Akkemsoke lake. It is located high (2050 m) above sea level, so the water in it is always cold - 4.5 °C. It is noteworthy that there are absolutely no fish in it. It has steep banks - at the very end the depth of the lake is already 7-9 m (maximum - 15 m).
- Lake Teletskoe. It features very clean water. It is fed by more than 70 rivers and occupies a colossal area of 22,300 hectares with a maximum depth of 325 m. Surrounded by forested mountain ranges. In summer, the water temperature warms up to 20 °C, which attracts tourists who want to swim.
- Manzherskoye Lake. Located on a plateau where the Katun River flows. Nearby you can find a village and several beaches. The lake water is rich in rare minerals and is therefore considered medicinal. In summer, the reservoir warms up well (up to 24 °C), which attracts vacationers here.
- Kulunda Lake. Due to its large size (35 km in diameter) and slightly salty water, it is called the Altai Sea. The water temperature reaches 26 °C. Several rivers and streams flow into the lake, but none flow out.
- Raspberry Lake. It is famous for the unusual reddish tint of the water, obtained due to the pigments of the bacterium Serratia salinaria. The saturation and color scheme of the reservoir changes depending on the time of year. The water is bitterly salty, like the sea - and the concentration of salt is so high that the bottom of the lake is covered with a mineral crust.
Other reservoirs of Altai are no less interesting. There are 17,085 rivers with a total length of 51,004 km. The largest of them is the Ob, which supplies water to almost the entire region. There are a lot of glacier-fed streams, small ponds, tributaries, and mineral springs here.
Nature
Currently, the natural landscapes of the region are negatively impacted by the results of economic activities. In order to preserve the diversity of fauna and flora, today it is planned to create protected natural areas: reserves, national parks, nature reserves, and natural monuments.
There are currently only 33 reserves on the territory (area 773,100 hectares), occupying 5% of the entire territory, which is not enough to maintain ecological and landscape balance in the biosphere of the region.
In any case, the Altai region is magnificent. The nature of the region is protected by law. Numerous natural monuments have been created. These are protected irreplaceable natural objects of scientific, cultural and historical value (mineral springs, caves, waterfalls, geological outcrops, paleontological objects, ancient centuries-old trees).
In total, there are 100 monuments in the region, 54 of them are geological, 14 are botanical, 31 are water and 1 is complex.
Altai region
The nature of the region is very diverse. The terrain is divided into:
- Plains located in its western and central parts, occupying the outskirts of the West Siberian Plateau.
- Mountains occupying the north, east and south of the region. The nature of Altai is incredibly beautiful. Russia is a country with most of the highlands located on its territory. The peaks of the mountains along their entire length range in height from 500 to 4500 m.
On the flat part there is forest-steppe and steppe. Coniferous and deciduous forests rustle in the mountain valleys and plateaus.
Many rivers flow throughout the region, most of which are not navigable, but are decorated with picturesque waterfalls. The main water arteries are the Katun (688 km long) and Biya (280 km long) rivers, from which the mighty Ob River originates. Water resources are also represented by numerous lakes, about 20 thousand in total. The most significant are Teletskoye - a huge reservoir of fresh water, mountain lake Aya, and the sacred reservoir Dzhulukul.
The Altai Mountains are a complex system of ridges, dotted with caves, gorges and cliffs with hanging glaciers. The highest part of the Altai Mountains is the Belukha peak with a height of 4506 m.
